Beautiful art, Lois Lane being cool, and coincidental content of a Scarecrow character hung up in a field in the same week that Wicked For Good released.
I really loved this issue. Tom Taylor delivers a sharp, fast-moving detective story built around the fear-virus plot, and the tension works incredibly well. The Batman/Lois dynamic adds something fresh, and the escalation of the mystery feels smart and engaging.
Mikel Janín’s art is stunning here — expressive, cinematic, and full of mood. The visuals elevate everything.
A strong, atmospheric chapter in this arc, and one of my favorites so far.

This current storyline is so awesome and the art is on point. Last we left batman he was in Kasnia having just passed out in the batwing after escaping the secret mountain lab collapsing. With 2 hours of no contact to Oracle, she does the only natural thing…she calls superman for help. At the time she was calling he was dealing with some intergang goons and their alien power suits, they have gotten a lot more brazen lately, but before Oracle could even finish asking for help…Superman was already done with them and flying to batman. He found him passed out in the batwing and took the brunt of all the countermeasures to rip open the hatch and get to him. Batman immediately asked to be taken to metropolis after coming back, and Superman demanded he take off his cowl so he can actually see into Bruce’s head and assess any damages to Batman’s head. In the few seconds they were talking batman already gave himself a full examination, and while he doesn’t have a concussion he does have a facial fracture. So now back to the matter at hand, gotham is under attack and Bruce needs to get to metropolis right now to see one person…Lois Lane. Immediately upon arriving to the daily planet and meeting up with her, batman sent Superman back to the mountain base in Kasnia to look for any clues that are buried there. Batman keeps an older Batmobile stashed in metropolis and as the pair head to that batman explains to Lois that he has followed all of her stories, she is the greatest investigative journalist in the country after all, and he is now taking particular interest in her stories about rouge experiments at STAR that have been shutdown after her reporting. Equipment he found was from STAR labs and he needs use of her contacts. Batman’s initial plan once they arrived was very brash, disable the cameras and guards and get inside to who they need to talk to. Lois has a more trusting approach…she is friends with the guard and was let inside to talk to DR. Lee. Hilariously as soon as Lois arrived in Lee’s office, batman just showed up and scared them. Classic move but not a move that is appropriate right now as Lois needs trust with her relationships and that does not inspire trust. She keeps batman outside of the office while she goes to talk to the doctor as she already has a hunch on what’s happening. Lois then brings up three stories that seemed unconnected but now have one large connection. Three stories of doctors doing dangerous things and dying because of it, all working at STAR labs and now she is assuming they all worked on the same project. Lee explains it was project courage, and was brought in by a private investor who already had the groundwork but the project was shut down. Even so it’s still a threat, and it turns out there is one more person who worked on the project. A researcher who worked remotely because he’s an agoraphobic and barely leaves his apartment. Oracle got the address to his apartment shockingly fast to Lois’ taste, but as they arrive they find that the apartment door is open. Lois immediately dawns a mask as this most likely means he has the virus and his fear has been taken away, but right as Lois was about to go inside batman noticed the large boot prints on the floor outside. He immediately grabs her and rips her out of the way, there was only one thing that could make them…the power suits worn by intergang. Now it’s time for Lois to stay outside as batman rushed inside he moved with pinpoint accuracy to avoid their blasts, placing small charges on each of their suits until finally deploying and activating all the localized EMPs, leaving them with nothing but heavy suits. But it’s very noticeable the virus is staring to take control of Batman’s fear and speculation as he wasn’t even looking for the fact the scientist is working with intergang. Suddenly he is pointing a gun at them and jumping out the window to try and get to the next building, he wasn’t going to make it if it wasn’t for batman leaping after him. They did go down quite hard and batman even comments on the fact he could have did that better. But the scientist is now safely back with them, restrained, and waiting for metropolis PD. From the scientist they find out that he was warned batman could be coming for him, and that their project wasn’t just for the virus but for different variations…including controlled safe doses to give people courage. Which is why the intergang attacks have been getting so brazen lately. He doesn’t have a cure for the virus but the private investors suggested there may be one. But as batman started looking through the lab equipment he noticed something he recognized and immediately called for Oracle to get him a meeting at Arkham Towers with Jonathan Crane…one big problem with that, Crane was taken last issue and a guard is dead. We find Crane out in the middle of a cornfield, strapped to a pole like a scarecrow as the lion approaches him with his old mask. Turns out Crane recognizes him, and the lion claims that everything he wants is right here. He is conquering his fear of scarecrow and of batman. As the issue comes to an end we have 19 hours left until batman has to go into quarantine. But Lois is worried for him and about him. The scientist knew he was coming, which means someone is probably leading him down a path. So even batman is staring to wonder, is he chasing the lion or taking the bait?

This has some of my favorite interior work in a comic right now. The art, expressions, and colors all work together so well. The story is also engaging and the tight timelimit gives it a sense of panic and desperation. This has been a very entertaining story arc so far.
