The Dog Mage

Rate this book
My name, well, they call me Jack. Though I’ve been called and named other things. Kings have named me, though that has sometimes gotten me into trouble. You see, when a king names you, he wants something. Nothing is free. Anyway, I’m an orphan. Fortunately, I’m a mage. That doesn’t make up for not having parents, but it helps . . . except when it doesn’t. The problem with being a . . . child mage is that everyone wants to use you for their own ends. The guilds, for instance. Not just one guild, all of them, everyone is looking for an edge, including me. My strongest talent is music, though no one sees that. What they do see is that my music . . . renews things, makes them new.
One of the first things I renewed was a pair of full-sized wooden dogs. I renewed them so well that they came to life and became my protectors. Circumstances forced me to protect myself from those who would force me to work for them. Unfortunately, bodies were left on the floor, and I was forced to leave one city for another. I became too good at protecting myself, and the bodies kept piling up. That’s when the king and his spymaster took notice of me. They saw me as a means to an end and wanted to use me as a weapon against their enemies.
The problem was, their enemies weren’t necessarily my enemies, and I hate being forced to do things against my will. So, the bodies that piled up were of those who tried to force me into bondage. All I wanted was to be left alone, but no one seemed to understand that.
So, let the bodies fall where they may; you’ve been warned.

it kept getting worse

I read to ~65% before writing this.

The first part wasn’t terrible. A little MarySue to start is ok. But it started to snowball.

At one point he learned to teleport from reading a spell in a book (not sure when the *orphan* who was living on the streets learned to read). Then he’s casting spells like a pro, without any pause.

I couldn’t keep reading, it got so ridiculous.

a good story

Rating: 3.5⭐️

Ok this is going to be a different sort of review. Mostly because I believe readership might break down differently here . Those who read it one way and then those who see other aspects of the story.

I finished Dog Mage, my first book by James Haddock, and I thought it was a good book. Very entertaining, fast paced fantasy adventure with some interesting magical system elements that I hadn’t really seen explored before.

The magic is certainly very thoughtfully crafted and I love how it is fitted into the narrative in multiple ways.

The plot of Jack, orphaned as a small child, finding his magic to becoming one of the most powerful mages in the known Kingdom is oddly straightforward. Jack as his magic grows and accumulates objects that helps his with his magical abilities has streamlined his approach to his life. Continue forward doing what he wants as his own person, if anything tries to get in his way more than once? Then he brutally and efficiently eliminates them, by dog, knife, whatever means necessary.

Turns out Jack is a bit of a psychopath. Not that it’s ever even remotely hinted at here. That’s my take on him.

But Jack’s answer to about everything is death, (not animals, just people, sometimes in mass quantities) in multiple ways, starting from childhood. And he’s not wasting any time, thought or emotion on it.

He chooses to change his face, name, and “character “ easily. Jack’s a chimera. That’s how he presents himself…to me. Often to others as well.

Which actually doesn’t bother me much because the story is a fantasy adventure. And had Haddock left it simply at magical battles where Jack is always the shining hero, where he vanquishes hundreds of enemies by himself, where it’s Jack in his fabulous glowing armor doing impossible things, well, it’s fun, and superficial.

But then there a romantic component and it gets problematic. Spoilers.

There’s an older princess to escort to a ball, looking for a matrimonial match. Jack’s her guardian/escort as assigned by the king. It’s a short time frame. Without any real sense of this couple having any real connection or time with each other, it’s “instalove”.

Other stories have done this. Not the issue. However,Jack isn’t one for the stationary life and he’s got things to do.There’s turmoil afloat so he needs to leave and do stuff. A man’s gotta do what he’s gotta do. Or Jack does whatever. Because that’s what Jack does.

She says no, don’t go and many other things in the same vein. None of which land well with him.So he’s done, he abandons her, engaged and all. No talking. She’s cut off, as are her folks he calls family. No contact.

Two yrs later. She’s been miserable and pining. He hasn’t given her a thought ( literally that what he said).
Someone royal gets them together and he’s oh, I guess I missed you (she’s crying her eyes out). Let’s get together again. Wink.

Yeah, the psychopath says it’s convenient for him you’re back. And his projects are well underway. So it’s phase two. Doesn’t this make you feel all cozy? Huh. I see a bunch of flags.

Because I don’t think it’s supposed to be taken that way.

To quote the description:

“So, let the bodies fall where they may; you’ve been warned.”

Lets be real, none of it makes sense.

First of all, he's not a Dog Mage, he's an Everything Mage. His magic does anything he wants.

Animate dogs? yes.
Animate anything else? yes
Heal someone? yes
Stop a charging horse instantly? yes
Attract gold to his feet? yes
Fix objects? yes
Shrink and enlarge any object? yes
Entrance people and animals? yes
Meld masks into his face? yes
Defend against mind magic? yes
Feel people through walls? yes
Raise fog? yes
Pass through walls? yes
Raise magic shields? yes
Remove a trail caused by an army of men, miles long? yes
Can see through a falcon's eyes? yes

I should stop here. The point is... The magic is just stupid. Whatever he dreams of, he can just do.

He doesn't even try to figure out the limits of his limitless powers. Why not just "try" to do ridiculous gigantic things? Why not just try to fly? Etc.

He's at a river and he sucks gold to his feet by singing. In one afternoon he makes 16 coins worth of gold. SO WHY THE HELL DOES HE NOT JUST GO DOWN THE RIVER AND KEEP MAKING GOLD?

He spends most of the time in the book making money. But it is very obvious that the amount of money he could make with his magic is impossibly high. He could make enough money in 1 day, to survive for 10 years.

Nonsensical non-reactions by all other characters. The main character does CRAZY stuff, and nobody reacts. He summons a whole gigantic fort. NOBODY SAYS A WORD ABOUT IT. He makes armies appear and disappear. No comment. Nobody is acting correctly.

The main character never tries to make friends. Acts like a complete NPC robot. Stuff happens and he has virtually no reaction. He has no visible feelings. Killing a whole building full of people? No biggie. What drives him? Nothing. What are his goals? Nothing besides making money that he uses for nothing.

At 54% read, I'm tapping out. The MC has now suddenly confessed his "love", and is getting married, TO SOMEONE HE HASN'T BEEN TALKING TO AT ALL. This is so stupid.

My Thoughts:

I'm an old James Haddock fan. I'm quite familiar with this author's style. As anticipated, this book is more or less similar to his other books. Most elements are copied from previous work. Similarly, this book is a "happy read". Meaning no matter that I know that this book would be like that, this being Haddock's work, I still enjoyed it immensely. And that my friends, speaks of the story telling quality of this author!

The world building is the same beautifully woven tapestry as the trademark of Haddock!

The story, seeing that this is just a re-invention of his old works, is still beautiful.

I didn't like Cidra, though. I think Jack could have picked a better wife than a spoiled brat of a noble.

Unlike Haddock's other books, this one is clearly laid out as a stand alone. So readers are not expecting a book two that never comes.

Quantitative Evaluation:

Story telling quality = 5
Character development = 4.5
Story itself = 4
Writing Style = 4.5
Ending = 4
World building = 5
Cover art = 4
Pace = 5
Plot = 3.5

I was conflicted on how to rate this beauty...

Pros:
I read the whole thing

Cons:
Bad writing. Like really bad.
No world building
Exactly ZERO explanation of how magic works, and the MC can just do anything they want.

I must have really low standards or have been really bored... The bad writing hit me immediately, but I thought "oh, there's 1000+ reviews and it's got a 4.5 star average rating, it's got to get better". Nope, the writing stayed bad the whole time. Here's a made up example of the writing style - "I woke up this morning. I then put on my clothes and brushed my teeth. I walked outside and picked up a knife. I cut out my eyes so I didn't have to read anymore bad writing". Just an endless series of statements

The OPness of the MC is beyond ridiculous. There's absolutely no limit on what is possible, especially since there is no description of how magic works and what is/isn't possible with it. Need to light a fire, no problem. Need to kill 4 arch mages even though I learned I had magic 3 months ago, no problem. Need to teleport, no problem. Need to heal somebody from the brink of death, no problem.

But I read the whole darned thing, what is wrong with me

Mr. Haddock always tells a good story.

It’s a good story. I enjoyed it. I do have some criticisms, but it was good. I think it fell a bit short of most of his other books though, hence the 4 star rating.

The plot was similar to other stories he’s written, but different enough not to be copies or entirely predictable. I felt there wasn’t a lot of character development, the romance felt rushed and then glossed over. The mage abilities were cool as always, but similar in many ways to other stories. Not to much struggle or setbacks which lowers the tension, but his writing is down to earth in a way that is just refreshing and a joy to read. You don’t get a ton of depth with the characters but he meets many decent people along the way that remind you of when people were more neighborly.

I did think the title wasn’t the best fit, but Toy Solider Mage doesn’t sound much better. Spotted a few typos, but I’m not sure how to flag them for correction. Looking forward to your next book!

TLDR Needs work but I LOVED the story anyway

Feel as if it was very fast paced and over the place. That isn't to say it wasn't enjoyable, mentally I just noticed time flowed weird. Alot of times kept wondering how old the MC was, and how he feel in love with Cidra so fast. I think you should try to develop more consistency with time and events. Prior to the MC getting stronger toward the end of the book you introduced him getting the ability to get the knowledge and powers of the mages he basically absorbed but that doesn't explain how he know so much about tactics and ships. Sorry not tryna pick apart your book, contrary to this review I actually loved it still and was looking forward to a book two but realized there wasn't one lol, so I will continue to wait. Thanks for writing and allowing me to read your work.

I loved the concept of his magic and some of the abilities he displayed, and the wooden miniatures and dolls was a nice refreshing touch to the book I don't normally see.

Life can be good even for an orphan if you're a Mage!

What a fun novella, as it falls just shy of a novel. I picked it up 'cause Goodreads suggested it and was taken hostage by the blurb... and could only find my release by reading it! 😆! And what I got when downloaded was som'min like if a DeckSmith and a Summoner and a Bard had a Ménage a trois and this was the result! And in case you don't know those are my favorite sub-genres!!! The MC hummm, well you can call him Jack of all Trades, or Jack Carlton, or maybe Sir Mason of Falconsweep what ever you prefer! When Jack figures out that he's a mage and whenever he hums or sings he renews the items in his possession and then and there he decides that it's a perfect money scheme. Buy old broken stuff make it new, even better than new, and then sell it for a much higher price. Life is good, that is until people start noticing him...
So grab a coffee, grab the book sitting back in your not so new comfy chair and enjoy the adventure.

Once again, it's a well written story. Not complete, I hope!

So far, as far as I can recall, the lowest score that I might have given one of Mr. Haddock's stories would be a 4. It is very similar in magical content but not completely the same. The plot is similar also.
I'm not really complaining because I've read all his books twice now. My only real complaint is I would like him to consider going back and continuing some of those books.
This book left me feeling somewhat hungry for more. He could probably stop here, but I hope that he doesn't! Only time will tell.
Oh, my one question is: how old is the MC at the beginning, as it appears that he's recently left an orphanage and is living on the streets. Then, he develops magical power, and the story flows from there. Based on this timeline, his power manifests when he turns 18. Still, well done!
Keep up the good work, Mr. Haddock!

Can we say "torn"? I zipped through this story, fascinated with the MC's discoveries of his musical magic, but too often annoyed by the tendency to kill them all and accumulate the spoils into the bag of holding. After a while, it started.to feel like I was reading a video game in first person with cheat codes enabled. Saying that, I realize that might be some of the fun factor for this--encounter problem, absorb power, take riches, lather, rinse repeat, accumulate points. Again, that can be fun, but then the ending felt rushed--almost as though another project took precedence but this one had to be rushed out the door first. So, back to being torn. Did I enjoy the story? Yep. Did I get frustrated? Yep. There was a missed opportunity for some depth in both character building and world building, but I find myself hoping for a book 2 with some of the same humor, less loneliness, and a richer dive into the world, the magic, and the characters.

Another good book

I’m a little biased because I love all of James Haddock’s books. So I can’t say this one disappointed. The only thing that fell off to me was that he went from an orphan with very little education to being a really smart tactician, and knowing some pretty big words. Though his absorbing education did pop in later, it was kind of after he had done some pretty big things. I did totally enjoy the miniatures and being able to size things up and down to be able to store them before the bag of holding showed up. This book had a lot of very creative thought put into it and that made it very enjoyable.
Having said all that, James! I’m still waiting for my sequels to other books that you have written. I would love to see some of them show up soon.

The Dog Mage is an interesting tale. I've seen stories with similar effects in them, but not quite this method, which makes this one a rather unique story all by itself.
If you like stories where the gutter rats rise to a position of prominence, this is a good story to add to your to read shelf, if you're just interested in little guy beats the system, then likewise, put this book on your to read shelf. I liked this book, but I don't see more in the series just yet, so I'll have to keep an eye on this author so I can grab the next book when it ocmes out.

Enjoyable but deficient

I really don't know what to say about this. I read it in one evening, but I have no idea what the protagonist looks like, or what any of the characters look like.
It read like an information dump about how the main character got to this point and then the main story is about to start except the info dump is the whole book.
It was very much, I did this, then I did this, then I got more powerful because of this and then I fell in love with someone that I had no actual interactions with.
Still, I read it and actually enjoyed it, but kept thinking how good it could be with some actual story exposition.

Good Read!!

Another good book from James Haddock. I have to say here that I really enjoy Mr. Haddock's books. They are mostly a light read, which is good. I tend to mainly read really long, very intense cultivation novels. This is a nice change. I almost always enjoy his main characters. They are intelligent and not overly obnoxious, self-centered, or overconfident. Most enjoyable. The only problem I have with his books is that after reading a new one, I feel this need to go back and read all the others all over again.

Walk this dog!

The concept appealed to me and I enjoyed the cover art, but the story and the characters far exceeded my expectations. I am tired of reading reluctant hero
plot progression tools. Haddock gets right down to it. Jack embraces his power and uses it for his own good and the good of others but don't cross him or those he cares about because he will brutally end you! This story was outstanding and flowed nicely. Take this Dog Mage for a walk your will not be disappointed. Good job Cheif!

Very enjoyable

I enjoyed this book. The premise was interesting and unusual as the main character grew into his power. What was fun about the whole book, was there was enough plot to have stretched the story out into a trilogy, but the author didn't waste his time or my reading time doing so. I have just finished this book, but I think I may find it a good book to reread. If so, I will increase my rating from four stars to five. Thank you, Mr Haddock, for a very pleasant reading experience. Perfect for escaping into a new land.

Mots enjoyable

It takes a zero to hero approach of a young orphan growing up finding he has a gift through song to fix things and away you go, much fighting and journeying goes on and is a good story although I would have liked to know what ages he did what at as its left ambiguous you are never told and loose story threads of people he meets and interacts with and never sees again (could be in the next book) could help some things are left mysteries and never explained.
Over all a good page turner .

Good story, but felt rushed

It was a good story. I was engrossed. It just…moved too fast. There wasn’t time to really breathe and build. I felt like this one story could’ve been 2-4 books easy, with more detail and character building.

It was very superficial for characters and their interactions. Very much just “he went there and he did this and he did that and enrolled was fixed” for most of the book.

I still liked it. I just regret that it was not fleshed out more. I’m still going to read other stories by the author, and I do recommend this one.

Completed to-do list

This wasn't a book. It was a "I did this" list. Nothing in this book was shown. Everything was told. The MC felt like an emotionless robot doing what he was programmed to do. He goes from orphan to Duke like I would walk outside and drink a cup of coffee. There was absolutely no tension in this book. Never once was the MC in any danger and never once not in of his surroundings.

Additionally, you don't call kings and queens "your highness", they are "your majesty". If you are going to write about royalty, learn how they are addressed.

I liked this story a lot...

It was reminiscent of The Thief series, in terms of mage powers, and Jack/Mason's situation with Cidra was turning into the dramedy of The Thief's hero and the woman he took as his wife (I really dislike when a female begins pushing her weight around just to prove she has the real power over her man). Fortunately, Mason put his foot down, refusing to be ordered about, redeeming himself and the book!

I like the growth, strength and mastery of the author's writing over time. He's a one-click purchase for me. Five stars, and well done!

I love that we get new books from the author I read the most, but........

Where's the 3rd book in the Duty trilogy? Where's the sequel to Cast Down World? The mage books are wonderful and compelling, but so are his military schemes books! I'm not an author, so I can't speak to the difficulty of coming up with new approaches to familiar themes, but please, PLEASE, finish with Duty.

overpowered main character

Despite an overpowering main character and very flat character development the author spins a fairy tale of male empowerment against social conventions, political realities, economic hardships, and rude bullies.

It reads more like the author‘s notes or draft outline than a novel but does flesh out a system of sympathetic magic that give a nod to conservation of mass if not energy. Though the real magic is just money and lots of it.

Good book

Overall it was a wonderful book! I do, however, wish the book had been more detailed. I felt like I was reading a Cliff notes version of a trilogy. With the being said, I'm not an author and have no experience other than being a passionate reader. I've started following Mr. Haddock and will be reading more of his work. I'm hoping there will be more books to follow and this becomes a series.

Simple and almost a clone to his last few books.

It's a very short book almost a novella, and follows Haddock's rags to riches plot line. I found the second half of the book so predictable as his other novels that it took away the simple fun.
At this point there is nothing original about any of these stories and follow almost the exact same tropes and plot lines as each other! Simple fun book that young people will enjoy as an easy reader.

Solid, Simple.

Orphan discovers magic, starts building a life, objects to being controlled.
Cleverly written, with an enjoyable protagonist. A bit underdeveloped in places.
I've read enough fairy tales to predict several story beats. The romance was expected but jarring - the characters had barely spoken before confessions of love.
Worth the read, but I hope the author keeps improving.

Very good book.

Today they write about females being as strong as a man, can do better than a man, fight like a man, etc. etc.
They have left our boys without books for them. Books can help shape a persons character. Our boys need more adventure books, and movies. Disneyland has forgotten 1/2 of the population is male and they do not like their girlie movies and theme parks and do not go to them. please write more books for our boys!!!

Not the next Game of Thrones, but I loved it!

First, the good:
- super easy to read, great way to spend an evening
- fast paced,
- decent world building,
- an MC who is easy to like,
- he has an arc that is clear

Now the needs improvement:
- too fast paced... would be nice to 'let the story breath'
- MC is pretty OP ... perhaps show some more adversity,
- some of what he does draws on information we did not see him learn

ai wrote this book

The premise behind this book was was interesting but it read like someone put prompts on a computer and there was no proper connections. There was no character development. No connection with characters relationships just happened and I’m all for a power fantasy book but this was just too much and I don’t understand any of the reviews that are here I don’t believe them. I think they’re bought and paid for if I could report this writer. I would.

Great

This has been a fun and interesting read. Like all your stories i really enjoyed the story and like all your books I'd love to see a continuation of it your writing has defiantly improved from your earlier work and there was only a couple of times it felt kind of stilted but for me it didn't really detract from the story just made a couple of places seem shit odd. Keep up the fun and interesting stories.

Lovely story of blessings

I enjoy the book very much. In this day and time with so much negativity, it was a positive experience reading this book. I like how he was blessed and how he brought happiness to others. He was always respectful to everyone and he didn’t have to be, because he was so powerful. He was a blessing to everyone he touched, unless they were trying to harm him or others. The book was relaxing and positive in its outcomes.
