Breathing Fire: A Crime Action Thriller

Rate this book
Striking a key on the laptop, he brought up a jagged red line knifing across the lower part of the map onscreen. “You ever been through here before?”

“Once or twice,” I said. “What is that?”

“It’s the route taken by a wolf wearing a tracking collar,” Childress replied. “He was shot by a rancher just north of Fort Peck this morning.”

“And you want to find out where it came from? With a storm rolling in?”

“At the necropsy this afternoon, we found that its stomach was full of human remains.”

Home for the winter at his cabin, Hawk Tate’s plan for the next couple of days was the same as everyone else across the region. With radio and news broadcasts interrupted frequently to warn of the doubleheader blizzard ripping through the region, his intentions were to alternate between hunkering down inside and venturing out only long enough to keep the snow from accumulating on his roof and around his front door.

An intended schedule, interrupted before it even begins by a call for help from a visiting agent with the Fish and Wildlife Service. A request for aid to track down the victim whose remains were found in the stomach of a slain animal before the storm hits, after which it might be lost until at least spring.

If not forever.

Against his better judgment, Hawk loads up his snowmobiles and leads the young agent to the body, only to discover that the man wasn’t a casualty of the elements, but the victim of a targeted strike. Someone who had been living under an assumed identity for the last several years, hoping to keep himself and his two young boys safe in the wake of a heinous incident that took place on the southern border.

Their own attempt at witness protection, hiding from a vicious enemy who appears to have tracked them down. Opposition with a massive score to settle, having already taken out the father, and willing to stop at nothing to eliminate the two boys as well.

Kids lost in a swirling snowstorm, their only hope that Hawk will get there first...

I originally hail from the midwest, growing up in the heart of farm country, and still consider it, along with West Tennessee, my co-home. Between the two, I have a firm belief that football is the greatest of all past-times, sweet tea is really the only acceptable beverage for any occasion, there is not an event on earth that either gym shorts or boots can't be worn to, and that Dairy Queen is the best restaurant on the planet. Further, southern accents are a highly likeable feature on most everybody, English bulldogs sit atop the critter hierarchy, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with a Saturday night spent catfishing at the lake.

Since leaving the midwest I've been to college in New England, grad school in the Rockies, and lived in over a dozen different cities ranging from DC to Honolulu along the way. Each and every one of these experiences has shaped who I am at this point, a fact I hope is expressed in my writing. I have developed enormous affinity for locales and people of every size and shape, and even if I never figure out a way to properly convey them on paper, I am very much grateful for their presence in my life.

To sum it up, I asked a very good friend recently how they would describe me for something like this. Their response: "Plagued by realism and trained by experiences/education to be a pessimist, you somehow remain above all else an active dreamer." While I can't say those are the exact words I would choose, I can't say they're wrong. I travel, live in different places, try new foods, meet all kinds of different people, and above all else stay curious to a fault.

Here's hoping it continues to provide us all with some pretty good stories...

0 to 60 in zero seconds and had me captivated from the first page. Don't even get me started about those two kids. Hawk is a forced to be reckoned with. This whole book had me going. I love it that we don't have to wait till the end of the book to understand what's going on. This book is very well written and I just love it!!

The Big Furry B…east is back, once again battling the brutal Montana winter, as well as major-league bad guys.

Hawk Tate really is a trouble magnet. No matter what he does, no matter how innocuous and innocent his activities, they always lead to big trouble with major consequences.

This time out, while answering the call to assist rounding up a neighbor’s escaped cattle during the lull between massive arctic storms, Hawk is drawn into an investigation of the attempted assassination of a family of witnesses that helped put a major crime figure in Federal prison—and is filing an appeal in which the elimination of the witnesses will almost guarantee his release.

Unfortunately for this seriously amoral violent crime figure, two of the targets are young boys, and for Hawk, makes it highly personal, given the parallel to his own daughter’s murder by a drug organization when he was working for the DEA. This very act being the impetus for Hawk’s not only resigning from the DEA, but his sojourn to the desolate wilderness seeking peace and solitude. There is no chance on earth that Hawk will allow harm to come to these boys, even it means dying in the process.

Extreme violence ensues, as more bad-guy resources are poured into the hunt, with only Hawk and a small rag-tag group of officers standing between the killers and their prey.
As in previous novels, the weather is an additional character pivotal to the story. Hawk both battles against, and uses his experience to benefit, from this raging storm.

This is another fantastic Hawk Tate saga, battling both the elements and bad guys—and his own personal demons both past and present, as he struggles to fulfill this highly personal challenge.

Highly recommend to both Hawk Tate enthusiasts, and first-time readers.

Dustin Stevens’ latest Hawk Tate thriller, Breathing Fire, - well, thrills. The newest release in the Hawk Tate series is Stevens at his storytelling best - and timing. Hawk Tate arrives with the backdrop of a blizzard just as winter is creeping into the lives of readers. Perfect.

Strong characters and multi-layered plots are a Stevens hallmark and readers will find both in these pages - amplified. Readers aren’t just reading the story - they are in the room with the action or on the back of the snow machine freezing their toes off. Stevens’ main characters all work for a living and their stress, anxiety, fear, anger, the elements, and fatigue all bleed into the reader.

Hawk Tate has wrapped the season and is heading for his mountain refuge to recharge his batteries with some much needed down time. However, trouble is brewing in the wilderness. A call to help round up some cows before a blizzard hits puts Hawk on the path into a whirlwind of the human kind.

Cows contained, departure for time off is sidelined by an encounter with an agent from Fish and Wildlife. Can Hawk do a special run to a spread where the rancher has shot a wolf for eating his livestock and the law dictates verification. The post mortem on the wolf finds a belly full of not livestock, but human remains. Everything changes - except the blizzard coming in - that’s a sure thing.

The first order of business is finding the rest of the body belonging to the contents in the belly of the wolf. What follows is why Breathing Fire is a “page turner”. The plot within the plot within the mystery. Great analysis, problem solving, and survival skills. This is a great read for series fans and folks new to the work of Dustin Stevens. Pairs well with a large mug of hot chocolate.

I have just finished an advanced reader copy of Breathing Fire, the latest Hawk Tate novel by Dustin Stevens. Hawk is a great series, a rugged former DEA agent who peacefully lives in the Yellowstone area running guided tours. A friend calls for help, having shot a large wolf that unfortunately was near his cattle, and had a location tag. This brings in the Forestry agent and they learn that human remains are found in its stomach. This sets in motion a series of events concerning a man and his two sons in self-imposed hiding from a master criminal in prison trying to get a new trial for the murder of the wife and mother. The young son was a witness and the crime boss sends squads of murderous goons to try to find and eliminate the family. Hawk, the DFS agent and a native deputy embark on a treacherous race against time to fight off the ruthless attackers and rescue the family. Lots of snowmobile action, firefights and a nasty machete are at play. Will Hawk be in time? Read to find out, no spoilers here!

Hawk Tate is back! True to form, Hawk stops at nothing to save the day. He partners with some new folks this time around, and the brief but strong character development as each person was introduced made us want to cheer on the good guys and stop the bad guys. The vivid winter weather and terrain descriptions pushed me to wrap myself up in a warm blanket, but the addition of 2 boys as the victims brought out the mama bear in me and I desperately wanted to grab a coat instead and step in to assist. This book is full of suspense and I didn’t want to put it down. As with other books in the series, Hawk’s devotion to holding the bad guys accountable is fierce and drives him to keep pushing until the end. I liked seeing Kaylen’s name on a few of the pages again. Looking forward to more Hawk Tate as I don’t think his story is complete yet!

Thanks to the author for the privilege of previewing this latest Hawk Tate adventure! Now up to the 11th volume, the first book (Cold Fire) was my introduction to Dustin Stevens. I've enjoyed most everything he's written, and in particular, this series has been excellent throughout.

Given that, it goes without saying this latest installment is another thrilling read, with non-stop action throughout as Hawk Tate goes against the elements to unfold a mystery - one that turns him into a protector of two young boys who are marked for elimination by nefarious enemies.

Hawk Tate is the kind of guy who will stop at nothing to protect the innocent and deal justice to the guilty, so hang on for a wild ride from start to finish. Highly recommended!

Dustin Srevens is the Rembrandt of modern literature. Whereas Rembrandt told beautiful stories through paint Dustin does it with words. Breathing Fire may be one of his best stories ever. His attention to detail is second to none. If you have never lived in the wilderness and tried to survive through a blizzard, you will know what it feels after reading this novel.
The title character Hawk Tate, a former DEA, agent takes on the cartel to try and save two boys who are in the crosshairs of its evil leader. Every step of the way you feel Hawk’s struggle in real time in this action-packed thriller.
If you like nonstop action from start to finish this is a must read; you will not be disappointed.

Dustin Stevens provides us with a great tale with bullets, blizzards, and, yes, snowmobiles

Hawk Tate lives in Montana where he jeeps his business as a guide in that area that includes Yellowstone National Park. As his season winds down, he gets a call from an agent of the Fish and Wildlife Service to investigate the remains of a human.

From then on, Dustin Stevens provides the reader with a true adventure amongst a winter storm that includes a man and his two sons, a crime boss after them, fire fights, and what seems multiple snowmobiles driven by virtually all the people in the story; and the wrecks that occur to some of then.

Prepare yourself for a fast-paced adventure that's hard to stop reading.

This is Hawk Tate at his finest. There is a blizzard bearing down on Montana and Hawk is all ready to ride it out safe and warm in his home. But what starts out as a simple call out to assist the local Fish & Wildlife officer turns into a deadly game when body is discovered. As the weather gets more intense, so does the investigation when it is discovered that there is more to the dead man than simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Fast-paced and action-packed seem too trite to describe this book. It is intense. It is deadly. It is the kind of book you’ll stay up late to read ‘just one more chapter’. This id Dustin Stevens at his finest.

Real page- turner!

This is one adventure Hawk Tate never expected to have with a massive snow storm predicted in Montana.
A Fish and Wildlife agent contacted him to help find a body of a victum , part of which was found in the stomach of a slain animal.
What started as one assignment ended up with multiple events.  The victims two sons being in danger led to Hawk needing to use all of his previous training and knowledge of his environment to save the lives of 2 young men.
This is the 11th book in the Hawk Tate series.  I recommend all of them, if you like crime thrillers that have many twists along the way.

could hardly wait to download my Advanced Reader Copy of the book. Wow, jumped right in with Hawk looking forward to some time at the cabin and the is contacted by Fish &Wildlife as there is a wolf with a tracking collar that leads them to a dead body. Big mystery…who is this guy and how did he get here? After finding the car, it appears there were others, but where are they?

Now it gets very interesting as we now have a guy with a mystery identity, missing kids, determined hit men and blizzard conditions. What more could you want except a cozy place to read and a cup of hot cocoa. Sit back and enjoy, highly recommend

Getting ready for an upcoming double blizzard, Hawk Tate is preparing to burrow in the warmth of his cabin. But a call from the sheriff changes those plans fast.
Plunged into the great outdoors, presently covered with a blanket of snow, he works relentlessly to find two young boys in the blizzard.
As with all Dustin's books & series, this book was impossible to put down. Hawk Tate is, by far, one of my favorite characters.
I strongly recommend this addition to the series. Filled with page turning excitement, you won't be able to put it down.

Hawk gets a request for help from an agent of the Fish and Wildlife Service just at the beginning of a record blizzard in Montana. What he finds brings in the sheriff and other agencies, all racing against time to save a couple of kids from certain execution. Traveling on snowmobiles in the blizzard, Hawk and the agents end up in several gunfights with mercenaries tied to a man in prison for murder. This is one of the more exciting Hawk Tate novels that will keep you glued to the book until the ending.

The winter breaks just never seem to happen for Hawk, and this winter is no different. What starts as tracking an animal’s last movements turns into much more than Hawk could ever expect. Running out of time and equipment, can Hawk use the worst storm in Montana history to his advantage and save two innocent boys from being hunted down by ruthless killers?
Another exciting Hawk Tate adventure by Dustin Stevens!
This could be read as a standalone, but why would you? Be sure to catch up on all of Hawk Tate's adventures!

Non-Stop Action from Start to Finish

Breathing Fire by Dustin Stevens is a great book with nonstop action right from the beginning. Once you start reading, it’s hard to put down. Dustin Stevens delivers another strong story featuring Hawk Tate as the main character, and he does not disappoint.

Breathing Fire: A Crime Action Thriller, my second read from author Dustin Stevens. An enjoyable 420-page read that reads longer than the page count. The premise of the story is good, what's delivered even better. “I received a complementary Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I look forward to reading more from this author with Fire and Ice: A Crime Action Thriller and The Boat Man (Reed and Billie #1): A Mystery Suspense Thriller high on my TBR list! (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

I enjoy this Hawk Tate series. I easily connect with Hawk and the plot flows.
A blizzard is coming, choice to stay inside or outside sweeping the snow from the roof.
When a call comes"s. from an agent asking for help to track down a person, now before
the storm hits, later, will be too late. Thus the story unfolds as I quickly turn the pages.
I recommend this. book as well as the many others this author has written.

Hawk is always up to help. This time he’s pulled into a search by the Fish & Game department when a called into investigate a the death of a wolf, whose stomach contents show human remains. His investigation leads to a man who seemed to be living incognito & his life was taken by a gunshot, not the wolf. He also finds that there are 2 missing sons of the man. Can Hawk find the two boys before the men who killed their father finds them? Excellent story with lots of action!

Hawk Tate is in his “hibernation” as an offseason Yellowtone tour guide. A routine request to track an animal in the middle of winter, turns into a suspenseful undertaking that tests the limits of all of his abilities. He ends up racing to find and protect two youngsters. Hawk ends up fighting the elements as well as assassins. A thriller that you can’t put down! Dustin Stevens is at his best in this one!

Hawk's wish for quiet evening turns into a wild adventure when he helps a Fish and Wildlife Service member track a wounded wolf which of course goes sidewise. This exciting, well-structured story delivers suspense until the last page, with vivid settings, engaging twists, and strong characters. So snuggled up in front of the fire, with some libation and blanket for the evening. If you haven’t read any of this series, now is the time!

Once again Hawk Tate has landed into the thick of this thriller. What started off as trying to have a quiet break and to prepare his home before the blizzard hits sees a request to help track down a victim who had fallen as a meal to a wolf that had then been shot by a rancher. This latest novel by Dustin Stevens has further entrenched Hawk Tate as one of my favourite characters & well worth while reading

I have to give one thing to credit this author: he writes page turners filled with action. What I liked: the action; the characters, especially Hawk; the fast thinking of the veterinarian. What I didn’t like: the lack of depth in most of the characters; the “bad guys” being so one-dimensional and stereotypical; the plot that unfolds in less than a week. Overall, these novels are quick reads but very predictable.

Another fabulous Hawk Tate adventure.  If you like non stop action then this book is for you. All Hawk wants is the quiet life but once again he is helping out someone and gets into a tight dangerous spot.

What starts out as parts of a human body in a wolf's stomach turns into a crazy hunt in the country in a blizzard to save 2 young boys.

A must read!

A simple call to help a colleague leads to a brutal chase across Montana in a colossal snowstorm. It would make me wonder if helping others is maybe not such a great idea. But no a great story with characters to match set in a Winter wonderland not many of us would even attempt to set foot in. Good guys, bad guys and people in need how can Hawk refuse.

Man! What a ride! This was a pulse pounding, heart-racing, non-stop journey that - in fictional time, was only a few days! I had trouble putting this down. Intense! Thrilling! And full of courage and bravery and compassion. The isolated and rugged backdrop of remote, blizzarded-in Montana was an essential part of the experience. I loved this book! I hope you will too.

A gruesome and hair raising story indicative of many Hawk’s adventures. A wolf’s necropsy revealed human remains and Hawk ventures out with a young Fish and Game warden to find two young sons. The extreme weather isn’t the only obstacle facing Hawk and his companion. It will keep you on the edge of your reading seat.
