Author’s Note: This is a short piece that I wrote for a blog and features Mala’s cousin, Laina, who was mentioned in “The Beast of Blackmoor.” This takes place after that story but there are no spoilers for it.

Milla Vane is an alternate name for author Meljean Brook.
Meljean was raised in the middle of the woods, and hid under her blankets at night with fairy tales, comic books, and romances. She left the forest and went on a misguided tour through the world of accounting before focusing on her first loves, reading and writing-and she realized that monsters, superheroes, and happily-ever-afters are easily found between the covers, as well as under them, so she set out to make her own.
Meljean lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and daughter.

Silent Night is a really short story that you can read for free on Milla Vane's website here, it's told from the point of view of Laina who was briefly mentioned in The Beast of Blackmoor novella as Mala's cousin.
It's hard to say too much about this story as it's so short but we get to see that Laina is on a quest of her own for the Goddess Vela. We only see a tiny snippet of her story so I was really excited when I realised that she is the heroine of book 3, A Dance of Smoke and Steel, which publishes later this year. I can't wait to read about more of her journey!
No rating because this is more a snippet than anything else but I liked it, brief as it was. Looking forward to Laina's complete story, A Dance of Smoke and Steel.
A snippet really, of a character we meet more fully in Touch of Stone and Snow(#2). Laina is on a quest for Vala, goddess of the Moon, as her sister Mala was before her. Naturally strong, it will take cunning to defeat their greatest enemy, and Laina will do anything to protect and save her people. But a component of the quest - that Laine maintain silence - is tested in this glimpse into the world of the Dragons. Can she keep her resolve?
Silent Night is a short story in the Barbarians universe by Milla Vane. Set in winter, it's a story about faith. Ms Vane packs a punch in such a few words.
A short and gripping piece! A wonderful glimpse into Laina's difficulty in remaining silence until the completion of the quest for Vela. Love to see the important of remaining silence! It practically saved her life! The Goddess Knew ALL!
Such a great short story, though I'd like to know how the quest ends! Or what it really is, since this was a bit of a detour! Great read, can't wait to read the full length book!
