Emily thought marrying bestselling author Stephen Dyer was her fairy tale ending, until she sees his search history.
Stephen insists it's research for his next psychological thriller story. She wants to believe him. But he knows her routine, her fears and her weaknesses. What if she's not his wife anymore—just a character he's planning to kill off?
As her paranoia spirals, Emily uncovers a truth far darker than any fiction. In this marriage, the most dangerous plot twist is the one you never see coming.
Fans of Freida McFadden, Daniel Hurst and Kiersten Modglin, will devour this fast-paced psychological thriller that will have you turning the pages all night.
Some very interesting twists and turns, that I appreciated although I had to assume some things for them to make sense. But it was so much fun that I would like it even if my assumptions are wrong (alas plot holes). The writing wasn’t the best, but again it was forgiven.
This is another 5-star read by James Caine. I appreciate the clever storytelling and multiple perspectives that kept me intrigued and guessing until the very end. “As the writer of a fictional piece of work, you have to live it. You have to believe it. You need to know all the small details.” This thriller will have you scrutinize every detail as you journey toward the truth. The smart clues and subtle humor added to my enjoyment of this edge-of-your-seat thriller. I highly recommend this twisted tale to all thriller addicts. Thank you Booksprout and the author for my copy.
Maybe it was me, but I never really connected with any of the characters. Emily, in particular, was whinier than a toddler who missed nap time, and I found myself growing increasingly frustrated with many of her decisions. Because I wasn’t emotionally invested in the characters, it made it harder for me to become fully immersed in the story.
The premise itself was interesting, and there were definitely moments that kept me curious enough to keep listening. The author did a good job creating tension and sprinkling in enough secrets and suspicion to make me want to know how everything would unfold.
Marnye Young did a competent job bringing the story to life, but her narration style just wasn’t for me. That’s entirely a matter of personal preference, but I never quite clicked with the character voices.
As for the ending, it landed well enough, but I never got that deliciously unhinged feeling I love in a thriller…where I’m questioning everyone, trusting no one, and texting my friends in all caps. It was entertaining, easy to get through, and perfectly fine for a few hours of escapism, but ultimately it wasn’t a story that left a lasting impression on me.
A huge thank you to Dreamscape Media and NetGalley for the advanced listening copy in exchange for an honest review. 📚✨
4.5 ⭐️ | Wait… Time out… this is not at all how I expected Emily, Stephen & Clara’s story to unfold! I thought I had it figured out a couple of times, however each and every one of my theories were incorrect. There were a lot of times in this story that I simply did not know what was going, and I mean that in the best way possible. If you enjoy domestic thrillers with jaw dropping moments, delusional characters, and unreliable narrators — this one’s for you! This is my fifth read by James Caine, and stories like this make me want to dive even deeper into this catalog!

A cast of unreliable narrators and a story as old as time. Remember, it's always the spouse...
Honestly that is all the information you need to know the entirety of the book. While I like the "I'm just googling for research" aspect, that alone is not enough to make this book stand out from the "Gone Girls" or any other secret backstabbing wife books that have come to market in the last 10 years or so. The inclusion of the lawyer girlfriend felt underutilized as well- why harp on her degree and love of the law if it is going to be used for so little plot? Fine for newer readers or casual readers or the genre, but I think that avid thriller readers will guess the twists fast.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author James Caine, and Dreamscape media for my ARC of this audiobook.
Loved this one! Stephen is an author who met wife, Emily at his book signing. Things are going well initially until the subterfuge begins and we aren't sure who to believe! It's one of those crazy books that keeps you hanging until the end!
MY HUSBAND'S AN AUTHOR BY JAMES CAINE. Release date set for the 11th of December 2025. Absolutely 5 huge ✨ ✨ ✨ ✨ ✨s Ohhh you know it's going to be a cracking book when the prologue alone grabs you by the throat. I read this book so quick. The premise was great and really came together perfectly. "Then you have reader reviews. You read those and it either puts a smile on your face or breaks your heart" I hope my reviews always puts a smile on your face ☺ I think we are all a bit messed up somewhere IYKUK. This book was truly brilliant. I've loved every single second of it. Totally unreliable narrator. I ended up being suspicious of many characters and didn't really have a scooby do where it was going to go and then like a RKO out of know where comes them twists. Best book to date Mr Caine. Absolutely fantastic 👏
James had his own style but i found this one a bit different not in a bad way just a bit different to previous books.
Still has great characters and storyline to get your teeth into. It's hard to say much about the story line that's not in the details without giving spoilers so I won't add to that just to say a good read with some breathtaking twists.
Emily meets Stephen at his book signing. They hit it off, and their life together begins. Stephen writes exciting thrillers while Emily loves romance novels. They seem happy, but who will tell their love story?
A twisty thriller with a great ending. This should definitely be your next read.

James Caine is a terrific writer and I really enjoy his plots and characters. Unfortunately, this book just did not do it for me. I think the subject matter was too close for comfort. I didn't like either Emily or Stephen and adding a third person half way through made it a little difficult to follow. It was still a good story just.
I definitely had a good time with this thriller and it was a first-time read of this author. The chapters were short and engaging and each one kept me wanting more. There were a handful of twists throughout the book but there was one in the middle in particular that just flipped me upside down and changed the entire way I was viewing this story. It was a pretty wild feeling to totally flip on people/the situation like that. Will be on the look for more from James Caine!
This was good but didn’t love! Stephen an author is married to Emily, Emily wants the perfect life but Stephen doesn’t provide that for her so she’s stages either computer searches that Stephen is going to murder Emily. When in fact Emily actually murders Stephen and sets him up, she uses the killing as self defense. It’s not until Stephen’s 1 month mistress Clara who is a lawyer gets involved and uncovers the truth. Emily wrote journals about plotting his murder and getting away with it. Clara finds the journals and gives to police, that’s how Emily gets the guilty verdict 2 years later. Quick chapters and minimal characters which I enjoyed but just wasn’t fully drawn in.

── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ── How to kill your wife and get away with it?
From the prologue alone, I knew I wasn't getting anything else done until I finished it. The setup is simple: a writer, a wife, and a marriage that looks fine until you start paying attention. The execution, however, is anything but predictable.
What really hooked me was the layering. Every chapter adds a new angle, a new suspicion, a new detail that makes you rethink what you thought you understood. The multiple perspectives are used so well here. Each voice adds just enough truth to make the lies harder to spot. I kept thinking I had the story figured out, only for another clue to send me in a different direction.
The characters are messy. No one is fully trustworthy, no one is fully innocent, and that’s exactly what makes the tension work. The “I’m just researching for a book” angle is clever and unsettling. It blurs the line between fiction and reality in a way that makes you scrutinize every detail.
I also liked how well everything came together by the end. Nothing felt throw in for the sake of a surprise. The reveals fit the story, and looking back, the clues were there all along. That's always satisfying when a thriller can pull it off.
I also have to give credit to Marnye Young's narration. She does a great job bringing the different perspectives to life and making each voice feel distinct. With a story built on secrets, lies, and shifting suspicions, that really matters. Her performance kept me engaged and made it easy to stay invested in the story.
Overall, this is a fast, addictive psychological thriller with sharp pacing, layered perspectives, and plenty of twists. It kept me second guessing everyone, and the way the story folds back on itself in the final stretch is so satisfying. Easily one of the most entertaining domestic thrillers I’ve picked up in a while. ── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4/5 Stars My Husband’s an Author by James Caine 🖊️📚 This was a solid psychological thriller… but not quite thrillery enough for me 👀 🧠 Quick take: Being married to an author sounds intriguing—until the secrets start piling up and nothing feels trustworthy. Tension builds, perspectives get messy, and you’re left wondering who’s lying… and about what. ✨ What I liked: An unreliable narrator done well (love/hate relationship with this one 😅) Creepy, uneasy vibes throughout Fast, easy read that keeps you invested 🤨 But here’s where it lost me a bit: I kept waiting for more twists—that jaw-drop moment—and then suddenly… the end? It wrapped up so fast I had to stop and think, wait… did I miss something? I wanted just a little more chaos before the credits rolled.
📌 Tropes: Unreliable Narrator Psychological Thriller Marriage with Secrets
My Husband’s an Author by James Caine Narrated by Marnye Young 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Fun, enthralling and exciting domestic thriller!!
Emily becomes suspicious of her author husband, Stephen, and winds up looking at some of his searches on his computer. Is he searching for research for his upcoming book, or a way to end his marriage?
There’s twists and turns in this story that I don’t see coming!! I was engaged from beginning to end with this book!
Thank you to NetGalley for an audio arc of this exciting thriller!! The narrator did a fantastic job!!
**The audiobook comes out June 16th and I recommend the listen!!**
I absolutely loved this story. This story was so twisty. This is my first book ive read by this author and I enjoyed it so much that I went and got the rest of his on kindle. I saw this going one way then it turned around and then bam another twist. Definitely worth the 5 stars to me.
I was hooked very quickly. However, I could never find a reason to even remotely like the FMC. Through all the twists, I never liked her and found her painfully annoying. The sharp spins with the plot was very enjoyable so that kept me in and wanting to finish.
Thank you NetGalley for the listen. Once I started, I knew I wanted to finish, even if it wasn’t fireworks for me.
I really enjoyed listening to this book. It was fast paced and easy to listen to. It had a few twists that kept me thinking about how it would eventually end. Overall, it’s a great audiobook that I would recommend to any thriller fan!
I almost gave up on this book. Glad I didn’t because the twists at the end are epic!!! But another book that has so much repeating lover and over. I had just finished one and then this was the same. If you don’t mind that I would definitely recommend this book.
I don't know how James Caine does it, but I become a speed reader who doesn't move for hours when I begin one of his books. With every page there is a new twist and turn and it's so very hard to pull away from his writing. I absolutely love that I can never guess how the ending is going to go or who the perpetrator is. I loved this book, it was a page turner and it enthralled me from beginning to end. I love how his brain works, it doesn't ever occur to me where the characters are headed.
This book is another great example of how addictive and pleasing it is to read a thriller written by him. I recommend this book to all thriller lovers, a fast paced thriller with twists and turns you will not see happening. Buckle up your seatbelts when reading My Husband's An Author because you're going for one hell of a ride.
This is a well written, twisty domestic thriller. The author's perspective on marriage issues is relatable and realistic... up to a point. The main character, Emily, comes off as really naive in the beginning, but she evolves as a character in the best way. As I was reading this novel, my mind was racing with so many different ways the plot could unfold, but I was not prepared for the ending I was given. From the use of misdirection to the shocking and explosive plot twists, this novel will have you second-guessing everything. If you're a domestic thriller fan like me, do yourself a favor and add this to your TBR today. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you, Booksirens and James Caine, for the arc.
My Husband's an Author is A thriller by James Caine. In my opinion, James Caine writes intense, unexpected thrillers. Emily is married to Stephen, a thriller author. I found the prologue to set the tone of the book perfectly. The author takes the reader on a wild ride. Just when I thought that I had figured out the ending, the author flipped the story. WOW, I was surprised. Then, another twist that I did not expect. This book should be on everyone's TBR list. Prepare for an unexpected story… it will keep you guessing! I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.
James Caine’s books are all so addictive and fast-paced reads! This one had me going back and forth wondering which spouse was telling the truth and which was gaslighting. Towards the end I had the nervous popcorn munchies! And then I cleared my internet search history!

This was a fast-paced psychological thriller that felt like a mix of domestic suspense and a late-90s Lifetime movie in the best way. The story revolves around a cheating spouse, money, manipulation, and an unreliable narrator—but here’s the funny part: the entire book repeatedly talked about unreliable narrators, and I still missed the clue about who the actual unreliable narrator was. 🤦🏻♀️
The pacing was one of the strongest parts of the book. I finished it in less than a day because I genuinely wanted to know where everything was going. The ending worked for me, and the twist was one I didn’t see coming. I also ended up liking characters I wasn’t expecting to like. The friend annoyed me at first but grew on me by the end, and honestly? I liked the mistress more than I expected. She deserved better than the mess she found herself in.
The narration is what kept this from being a higher rating. The narrator voiced many of the characters similarly, which made it difficult to track whose POV I was listening to at times. Her Canadian accent was also very noticeable, especially on certain words. That said, the story itself was strong enough that I kept listening and was left staring at the wall for a minute after it ended.
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (3.5 rounded up)
Who Should Read/Listen? Fans of psychological thrillers, domestic suspense, shocking twists, unreliable narrators, and anyone who misses the over-the-top drama of late-90s Lifetime movies.
Trigger Warnings: Cheating, murder, blood
BS Meter: 🟡 Author, I have questions… but based on the ending, I suspect the author had answers and I just missed the clues. 🤣
