Etarla can never return to the mundane village life she once embraced. Not when the path into the Domus now lives within her chest. Not when she masquerades as the powerful being whose strange eyes and knowledge she bears. And not when betrayal has strained her budding connection with the fierce Territory leader who broadened her world and awakened feelings she had never known.

While Etarla has reunited with Harthon, they’re only allied in wanting to access the life-saving resources within the Domus, which continues to deplete their divided land. But the way to salvation is fraught with challenge and treachery. When one threat is put to rest, new ones arise, both at Harthon’s Citadel and on the journey ahead. The line between friend and enemy is shaded grey, and strange happenings raise new questions about Etarla’s inherited knowledge.

And as Etarla searches for her footing, she finds herself ensnared by yet another trial—this one of the heart. For Harthon is not as unfeeling as he pretends to be, and the bond between them is very much alive.

Megan Monte’s first stories were born on the sidelines of her brother’s

a blend of slow-burn romance and high-stakes adventure. And, as much
as she loves getting lost in characters’ adventures, she also likes to create

This was a highly anticipated read for me. I loved Waykeeper despite a few small flaws in the story but I can't say the same about Waytreader. The story picks right where we left off with Etarla escaping Koerlyn and making her way back to Harthon who is understandably pissed with her for leaving in the first place. The trust between these two definitely took a nose dive and is essentially slowly built back up in this installment. The goal is still to find the way to the Domus and save the territories from almost certain death.

I got through the first 50% pretty quickly even though not a lot happened. Etarla is doing a lot of training still and learning what the heat and her chest is trying to tell her about the path to the Domus. Harthon and team are trying to make a plan and Koerlyn and his men are trying to get Etarla back. There were a couple intense battles that threatened a few lives but that is where some of my questions started. Then by the second half, my reading started to slow down. The story wasn't doing very much and for two adults who were pretty up front with each other in book one, there was a lot more angry, non-verbal stares and assumptions instead of actual talking which lead to a lot of misunderstandings and poor decisions between our main characters.

The ending left very little to be desired by me. I thought this was a duology but the story ends in yet another cliffhanger and I realized this is actually going to be a trilogy. I'm honestly not sure I'm going to read the third book. A lot of characters die in this one and storylines are introduced that I feel weren't necessary to the main plot. I know the author has a new story coming up so I'll definitely give that one a try since it's a standalone but this is probably the end of the Amethyst Gaze for me.

I DEVOURED Waytreader!!! Book 2 was every bit as engaging as book 1, and THAT CLIFFHANGER!!!?? How dare you, Megan! I need book 3 immediately 🥲 The character development was beautifully done and the pacing was perfect. The slow burn payoff was HOT and satisfying to say the least 🥵 I adore Etarla and Harthon, their banter, and what they bring out in each other. I can’t wait for book 3!

“Eyes on mine, carella.”

Harthon, MY MAN 😮‍💨 He's bringing all the dom energy in this one. Actually, they're both lowkey giving dom/brat vibes 🤣 To quote Etarla - he’s such a bullheaded ass.

THE BANTER!! & it's *good* banter, not the corny stuff, yk?? I was giggling and smiling so hard that my cheeks were actually hurting ☠️ It was RIDICULOUS. And the spicy scenes?? GOOD LAWD. Sure, I've read far spicier books, but the way Megan writes these scenes?? The build up and tension?? I was blushing so hard!! 🤣

“Because if the sailors here saw your skin, I’d have to do something about it. And then we wouldn’t have any crew left to guide our ship.”

& y'all know I'm feral for a hair washing/hair braiding moment, but *slight spoiler* he untangles her hair after a battle scene in this one 🥹🫠

The side characters are also great, the found family trope was executed perfectly - I loveeee me some Callen 😆👀

Highly recommend this series!! I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE NEXT BOOK.

Thank you to Megan for the ARC 🫶

Book 2 of Through the Amethyst Gaze

This is a solid 4-star book that will hit the spot for any romantasy readers looking for strong worldbuilding, well-rounded lead characters, exhilarating fights (that end fight! I was on the edge of my seat), and heated romance, all delivered with strong storytelling skills.

The good:
+ Prose: Megan Monte knows how to write. The scenes move promptly, and there’s no lag. The story slows when needed and picks up in equal measure. The language was a delight to read. There’s much more precision in the way everything is described, and Etarla’s eye color finally feels clear to me.
+ story beats, the story moves with a relentless pace. The book has great action, and a reader feels invested. The fights cost. And that end fight…man, maybe I’m just weak on nerves, but I honestly was concerned for a moment.
+ romance: The relationship was believable. Also, a lot steamier than in Book 1. If you complained about the lack of action in that regard, you shouldn’t fear that in Book 2.
+ Etarla’s insecurity and doubts were dealt with appropriate grace. Harthon, too, gained additional depth, with insecurities and fears that weren’t as present in Book 1 (at least as far as I recall)

So, why not 5?

There were a few little things that left me wanting. I won’t go into details for the sake of spoilers, but the biggest ones for me, narrative-wise: The story would have benefited from further strengthening of how things stand with Domus and how that plays into the story. I feel that more foreshadowing and staying in that particular section would have needed more clarification. I still don’t have a clear understanding of either state of Domus, or magus’ powers.

The antagonist’s re-emergence felt rather abrupt, or at least braiding that particular plot piece could have benefited from some further thought. The author did a commendable job in reminding the reader, but in my case, silence was the same as ‘good riddance’ (especially since the last ⅓ of the story kind of ignored the topic). I was ready for the characters to go head-on with a new opponent.

There were a few other small things, but I think these two affected my reading experience the most. Also, my feelings might be affected by my own expectations. So all in all… If you like action, danger, romance, and can tolerate some violence, grab Book 1 and Book 2 of Through the Amethyst Gaze, and brace yourself to survive the wild ride in the gritty world of Etarla and Harthon.

This is book 2 in what will be a trilogy.
Waytreader picks right up where Waykeeper leaves off.
(go check out my review of Waykeeper to see my thoughts on it)

For me, book 1 walked briskly so that book 2 could run. I love how Megan writes. I couldn't remember anything when I picked up this book, but I fell back into the world very quickly and that was so refreshing. Usually I spend 15-20% bumbling around flipping back to previous books, finding reviews online... I didn't need to with this.

"I am your weapon and your shield, against opponents we can see and those we cannot.”

Harthon and Etarla... there's a lot to be said about these two. I will say it's chemistry you believe and that you root for. Tension and longing, banter, but also tenderness... There are some scenes in this book that made my knees weak. You will also get a bit of open door spice that is written in a way that this non-spicy girlie could appreciate. It was written to be beautiful, vulnerable, but also fiery.

The star of this book (for me) is Harthon. You get to know him as he is currently by learning parts of his past. I feel like I know this man. 90% of my highlights are lines from him. Some of his confessions, professions, and his snark. I love a complex man that has goals, is protective, can be brutal, but is also good. He's not perfect... he's done bad things... but... I love him.

That's not to say Etarla is a weak character because she is not. At all. I was just so glad to get to know Harthon that everything else falls short. I suspect she might be my favorite character in book 3.
There are side characters like Callen and Stefano that really bring a little extra to the table. And the VILLAIN.... I LOVE to hate a villain.

I will say that this book left me literally staring at a wall. I want to say more, but I'll refrain.

Needless to say, I had a good time. Book 2 was even better than book 1... and I have a feeling... Book 3 will trump book 2. I cannot wait to read it.

If you've made it this far and you haven't read Book 1, go now... think world moved on type, almost dystopian type setting... with fantasy elements... excellent balance of character, world, romance, and plot.

4.5✨ I have been highly anticipating Waytreader after a very impressive debut, and it definitely delivered! An intriguing world, high stakes, political tension, violence, mystery, and a simmering romance - what a well-balanced, wild ride. I still am so thrilled with how fresh it feels. I thought Megan did a fantastic job of weaving in important bits as reminders from book 1 that helped to transition seamlessly, picking up right where we left off.

Tenderness is the stand out in this book for me. In contrast with such a violent and downtrodden world with brutal and dangerous people everywhere you look, the pockets of tenderness are a respite - so special and innately human.
This is the kind of romance I have been craving and yearning for and it hit the spot. The slow burn with THE CRUMBS and THE SPRINKLES that keep you hungry for more and the build up of tension was done so well. Harthon and Etarla’s dynamic is so so good - both stubborn and snarky but they care so deeply- for each other and for a purpose much bigger than themselves.
THE WAY HARTHON TAKES CARE OF HER IN SPITE OF EVERYTHING makes me feral. I love that he is a complex, layered, and very flawed character that feels like a real person instead of cookie cutter. Sometimes I think I’ve become immune to reading spice after reading so much in this genre, but oh my gosh did Megan prove me wrong 🤭 She knows how to write a damn good spicy scene. I think it’s because instead of being purely just physical and explicit, it was done in a way that was filled with fiery passion, intimate vulnerability and, again, tenderness.
This book was naturally a bit slower than book 1, but still well paced to hold your attention, and I really noticed growth with the writing, a lot more emotional impact and depth, and stronger character work. Truly so impressed!

I still have so many questions in the best way and I think this was the perfect build up to an epic conclusion. Needless to say, I cannot wait for book 3!!!

Thank you to Megan for an e-ARC ✨ all opinions are my own.

CW: violence, gore, spice, referenced loss of parents, referenced child abuse, some others

Thank you to the author for the ARC! “Waytreader” is available now!

I was so impatient to get my hands on this one, and it absolutely lived up to my expectations.

Etarla may have been rescued from Princep Koerlyn, but she’s far from safe. With her world on the brink of collapse and enemies lurking in every corner, finding the path into the Domus has never been more important.

I don’t know what the stage before a full reading slump is, but I was definitely in one. I read some great stories, but it wasn’t filling the tank. At least not until I finally got to crack this one open. When I tell you I devoured this story, it’s not an exaggeration. Every spare minute found me cramming in just one more chapter, just a few more pages. I finished the book feeling more refreshed than I have in ages, and it certainly wasn’t because I was getting more sleep.

I kind of adore Etarla as an FMC. She’s stressed out, she’s terrified, she’s doing the best she can with absolutely nothing, *and she is holding it all together with teeth and will alone.* She doesn’t know how to do any of this, and she’s doing it anyway. She didn’t mysteriously become perfect at all of this overnight; she’s put in the work. Training and practicing and asking for help, even when she despises admitting a weakness. We’re getting to watch her become more confident in herself and her abilities, and it feels all the more rewarding because we’ve also watched her earn it.

Don’t even get me started on the world-building. How can you have a land that is full of nothing but death and dying things and still manage to convey distinct people and locations and scenes when none of the usual visual cues are there? And how about the entire group of genuinely nightmare-inducing people who [REDACTED FOR SPOILERS]?! Insane and beautiful and a complete delight to explore.

I do not have enough words for the plot. It’s been days since I finished the book, and I still don’t have a clue where to start. Without spoilers, there were multiple parts that just left me completely gutted; I actually don’t think my soul has quite recovered. Addictive, delicious, and unforgettable. That's the best I can do.

I don’t know what else to tell you. I knew this book would be amazing before I ever started it, and I was correct. Book 3 can’t get here soon enough, and you absolutely need to go read this series.

Waykeeper, book 1 of this series was my # 1 read from 2025..so it's fair to say I had hopes that this would be a great read. But my hopes paled in comparison to what I actually got to experience!

I'm just going to go ahead and say it that this is definitely going to be in my top 2 of 2026!! 👏🏆

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

It was everything I wanted and more. Frfr.

Spoiler-free review:

This is no normal book 2, this makes book 1 look like an opening bid in a story so expansive book 1 really was just the beginning! This was an adventure novel with every romantic trope that I wanted done to such a caliber I'll be needing to do a few rereads just to absorb everything this story has to offer!

It hit every mark touched on in book 1 and blew my expectations out of the water. The plot deepens, the world expands, and the spice is perfection! 🥵

The yearning was everything and I could not put this book down. Every chapter was balanced perfectly with the plot that I couldn't stop thinking about and characters so well written that I was gasping, sobbing and otherwise completely consumed.

I love the book 1 for so many reasons, but this book stands on its own and invites everything you think you know to be reconsidered. This is a bigger world and there's bigger messaging happening, book 1 was just starting the conversation, this one's demanding and impossible to stop reading.

I'm just going to say it Harthon is my more gritty Aragron. Like, I love that man. 😘 He really is all of the best parts of Aragorn with a depth of grit and conviction all his own!

I love how imperfect and emotional Etarla is, how it never stops her from being the best she can be but it shows just what a lovable and courageous human she is.💕

Grab book 1, if it's been on your TBR just get it right now so you can be prepared for the March 5th release date of this masterpiece.

Then you come right back here and message me so we can emotionally process that ending together....I'm not ok.

Waytreader picks up with Etarla now able to access the way into the Domus, the wall built by an old king in Centralis that has been draining life from the surrounding territories. Resources are scarce and war is a steady presence. Etarla barely escapes one danger only to be labeled a traitor and pulled straight into battle.

The political tension deepens. Safety is a fragile illusion in this world. Alliances are layered and treachery lurks near and far. Motivations are rarely what they seem, and that constant uncertainty adds weight to every decision.

We explore more of the surrounding territories, expanding the world from the sea route into Sixth to the mountain pass into the wild First. With each step closer to the Domus, the natural world seems to react to something larger tied to the Magvis and Etarla’s amethyst eyes. The path forward comes with twists and turns I truly did not anticipate.

The character building is extremely well done. Supporting characters receive just enough development, while the depth given to Etarla and Harthon feels intentional and earned. Merelda has a small role but became one of my favorite characters. Witty, mischievously playful, and full of straightforward wisdom, she is a beautifully written second mother figure.

Content note: I am normally not a fan of spice, but what is here is tastefully done. It focuses on intimacy beyond the physical, on trust and vulnerability after chaos. The tender mud matted hair brushing scene was subtle tension building done right.

While book one was captivating and fresh, this second installment truly shows the author growing in all the best ways. I am very much looking forward to the third book and ready to see Etarla claim the full Magvis power that feels destined for her, because her role in what is coming is clearly about to grow.

I received an advanced reader copy from the author and am voluntarily leaving this honest review. 🖤

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review, Thank you!

After really enjoying Waykeeper I was excited to continue the journey in Waytreader and learn more about Etarla’s evolving powers as well as see further character development between Etarla and Hart. Overall, this was an enjoyable continuation of the series, especially for readers who are invested in the relationship dynamics between the main characters.

One of the highlights for me was getting more interaction between Etarla and Hart. Their moments together added emotional depth and helped strengthen the connection established in the first book. The character-driven aspects of the story remained engaging and were a strong point throughout.

That said, I did find myself wanting more exploration of Etarla’s abilities and the larger mysteries introduced earlier in the series. I was particularly hoping for deeper insight into what occurred inside the dome and a clearer expansion of the potential powers Etarla may possess. These elements felt somewhat underdeveloped compared to my expectations coming out of Book 1.

Even so, Waytreader remains an entertaining follow-up that continues to build the world and relationships, and it left me curious to see where the story goes next.

I ate it up!
Love Etarla and Harts journey and the cliffhanger in the end had my jaw on the floor. I can’t imagine how everything will turn out with just one book left 🥺 there are a lot of unanswered questions- mainly how Etarlas gift will progress and what is with this pulsating glow in her chest ? I personally think it will be something like the “fated mates” trope and I think that I will love it here because their relationship developed naturally and gentle and not forced because of some fate or prophecy.
Carella 🩷 is my new best pet name !
The found family was glorious and Cal and Stephano were given new depth- loved it really!

I gave “only” 4✨ because Hart was a tiny little bit undecided and acted immature and undecided in some chapters that I was left rather confused- like Etarla. Keep it together man, she is perfect for you!
Although I would have liked a little more affection through like touching and stuff ? The 1 🌶️ scene felt earned after all the longing and yearning, but Hart like constantly denying our girl before and after bedding her and calling her naive 2 times (!😩) left me wondering if he reeeally feels this deep passion he declared .. we will see 🫶

Wow. Where to even begin. I thought Waykeeper was elite storytelling (and it is) but Waytreader is truly a work of art. Immediate 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The world and story that began to unfold in Waykeeper evolves beautifully in Waytreader. We are given action, banter, longing, and moments of doubt followed by great character development. The challenges faced in order to find and enter the Domus become very real as Etarla embraces her role in trying to make their world better.

Woven within the greater purpose and plan driving our characters is the relationship that continues to deepen between Etarla and Harthon. The banter is at a premier level. Between the two of them, there is such a delicious mix of stubbornness, longing, and care. Not to mention that the spice is done so well and perfectly placed throughout the story. For someone who says he isn’t good with words Harthon is smooth 🤭😏

I highly recommend you read Waykeeper and pick up book 2, Waytreader when it releases on March 5th!

ARC Review

4.25 stars for this beauty!

I started Waytreader with ski-high (or I should say Domus-high) expectations after Waykeeper made the very top of my list of 2025 reads. And, for the most part, Waytreader rose to the occasion.

Megan continues to grace us with her gorgeous prose and fantastic character work. I am well and truly obsessed with Harthon and Etarla (and my sweet baby angels Callen and Stefano). And the sweetest romance!! 10/10, no notes.

I was really hoping that Waytreader would build upon the fantastic lore and world building from Waykeeper. And it did, sort of. I ended the book with more questions than answers and can’t quite grasp what the story is trying to build to now with the Domus, the Wolf, Etarla’s power, etc. Could this be a very mild case of middle-book-syndrome? Certainly possible. And absolutely still an excellent read.

I would wholeheartedly recommend this book! And I will be tuning back in to see where things go in book 3!!

Thank you to Megan Monte for the ARC!

I wish I liked this one as much as the first but I think I just really really hate the “MMC groveling for forgiveness” conflict/trope that the first part of this book focuses on. It’s so weak and annoying. Also in my opinion, the very second a woman becomes genuinely worried that her partner is about to hit her or otherwise harm her, that relationship is now unsalvageable. This happens explicitly in the first few chapters and then they just never discuss it. It’s weird and honestly a little irresponsible to just sweep that under the rug.

In general I feel like the main two characters don’t have that much chemistry. They say they love each other but aside from being attracted to each other, there isn’t much there. Harthon hits all the bullet points for a food fantasy MMC and thats about it for me, idk. I found my eyes glazing over every time thy got flirty or physical.

The plot is so slow at the beginning, it picks up and improves dramatically but not until like the 70% mark. I don’t think I liked the last 30% enough to keep going with this series.

Megan Monte could write a manual on watching paint dry and it would be a 5 star read

The way this lady writes! Ever since I finished Wayfinder, I have been on the edge of my seat waiting for the next book in the story. I was feeling nervous at the end because I didn’t know there was a third book because I didn’t want the fun to end. I cannot say enough good things about the book or the author. One thing specifically that delighted me is that I never knew what would come next. I am usually pretty good at guessing the big plot twist/the formula of a plot before it happens. Not this one! I was pleasantly surprised the entire book and I can’t wait for the next one! 5 stars for you Megan Monte! You go Megan Monte!

I was lucky enough to be chosen as an ARC reader for this sequel, and I’m so happy to say it lived up to all my expectations. I loved the first book, but this one really took things to the next level. The world is so unique, and just when I thought I could predict what would happen next, it completely changed.

I’m a sucker for a good found family trope, especially when all the side characters are interesting, witty, and feel just as important as the leads. And the tension between the FMC and MMC? Perfectly done. It had me squealing one moment and wanting for more the next.

I genuinely couldn’t put it down. 10/10 recommend this series!

This book was amazing and does end on a cliffhanger. But it’s very well written and the characters are believable. I very rarely adore side characters but this one I do. Stefano is amazing, the looters boy has a world of hurt and grit, Joris and Callem. They’re just amazing and with personality and interactions with Etarla that create connection and depth. Loved it. Now Hearthon…that man. Just great. I cannot stress enough how well written these characters and how human they all feel. Megan is a phenomenal author. I read her first book and in the first three chapters I knew I was going to love her book and then checked to see when the second one was going to be released. It was that good.

A 10/10 read. I'm a big fan of romantasy books, but I find they often fall flat in the maturity of the characters in lieu of smuttiness. This book is different. Although ratcheted up a notch (or more...), Etarla and Harthon's chemistry is palpable but also refreshingly well developed. I loved that the storyline kept me guessing with twists and turns that don't disappoint. I'm not going to spoil the ending, but to say I'm ready for book #3 is...an understatement.

I love, love how easy it is to get into and obsessed with this series. It has quickly become my re-read series of choice. I highly recommend making this series your next read!!

3.50✨ Devoured this book in less than 24 hours.

It’s always refreshing when, even after the main couple gets together, the banter and tension remains. I love when the MMC proves again and again his brutal reputation. Harthon thrives on violence and when the soft moments come? They hit HARD. 😍

Now I still didn’t feel like the minor characters were fleshed out enough (expect maybe Stefano). The issues I had with the pacing during book 1 continued in this one as —even though I certainly had fun— the interesting part of the plot happened toward the last maybe 30% of the book.

Will definitely continue when the final installment comes out.

Absolutely loved the beginning it was right back into the action and there was tension I couldn’t put it down. And then it suddenly felt so drawn out and once the fmc and mmc got back on the same page I just lost interest. I really think this could’ve been a great duology but at the end of this book they quite literally start back at square one. So it was very unsatisfying and I’m not really dying to read the next one because I don’t really want to start all over with the same mission… I don’t know maybe if the last one is heavily reviewed as amazing but otherwise I think I’m done with this series

4.5-5⭐️ Fantasy. Waytreader by Megan Monte.
Book two, ARC did not disappoint - the adventure was never ending with danger at every turn. For the romantic reader, the slow-burn was splendid, with all the hot and cold moments between our violet eyed heroin and her quest partner/warrior hero. Etarla and Harthon are the perfect combination of driven and loyal to what matters most in a dying world, and to protecting each other the best way they can - especially in moments when the choices oscillate between bad and worse. Love a cliff hanger when you do not see it coming but know it will be a doozy. Release date March 5th, 2026.

I had the honor of reading this as an ARC. What an amazing sequel! Waykeeper was a top 5 read for me in 2025, and Waytreader is on its way for that title in 2026! The writing style was easy to follow, and the plot continued to surprise and thrill me. Etarla is such a strong female character, yet also relatable since she often doubts her abilities. I loved seeing her romantic and platonic relationships grow throughout this book. And that ending!!!!

Megan Monte delivers again with a second installment of her first series. The character and plot development is superb and to not include any major spoilers, the multiple plot twists had me audibly gasping and exclaiming out at times. Some spice mixed in which helps uplift the weight of the realities of their world that Harthon and Etarla are facing. Overall I cannot wait for the final installment of their story and also the debut of her summer romance novel coming out May 26th.

Everything Megan writes is absolutely gut wrenching. I finish her books in one day because I simply cannot make myself set them down. I feel like Etarla is a strong, authentic character, even with the fantastical trials she is facing. And the romance is top tier ❤️ Cannot WAIT for book 3!

REVIEW OF ARC

Everyone you MUST read this. I was obsessed with the first book and this one somehow got even better??????? Harthon and Etarla’s relationship in this was 🤌🏼. Also the action was top tier. Highly recommend.

Highly recommend reading this series! I’m in LOVE with everything about this series. The writing, the characters, the events. I love Harthon so much, that is my MAN. And their banter is just chefs kiss. I can’t wait for book three
