Better Homes and Gardens is the fourth best selling magazine in the United States. Better Homes and Gardens focuses on interests regarding homes, cooking, gardening, crafts, healthy living, decorating, and entertaining. The magazine is published 12 times per year by the Meredith Corporation. It was founded in 1922 by Edwin Meredith, who had previously been the United States Secretary of Agriculture under Woodrow Wilson.
Better Homes and Gardens is one of the "Seven Sisters", a group of women's service magazines.
I grew up in the seventies, so it isn’t a surprise that I have a sweet tooth for seventies cookies. This is an exceptional collection, dated 1975.
I love oatmeal cookies of most kinds, and made some of the best oatmeal cookies I’ve made or had with the “crunchy on the outside, yet chewy in the center” recipe here. And the Scotch Teas, which is not a recipe I’ve ever heard of, is just butter, brown sugar, baking powder, and oatmeal (and ¼ teaspoon salt, listed in the instructions but not the ingredients).
The reason I bought the book, though, is that it includes a recipe for Pecan Pie Bars. They’re shortbread with pecan pie filling poured over the top.
I also have bookmarked Saucepan Taffy Bars, Velvet Pistachio Bars, Frosted Cashew Drops, Butter Pecan Cookies, and Honey Macaroonies.
It has, obviously, an expansive definition of what makes a cookie that includes bars, some of which look, in the pictures, decidedly cake-like.
There are also craftsy articles I’m never going to use on how to make gift boxes out of clay.
Divided into 4 sections (Bar Cookie Treasure Chest/Cookie Jar Classics/Special-Day Cookies and Making and Giving Cookies) this book has a big selection of recipes to offer.
