These are my guilty pleasure and I kinda like the whole werewolves live in a different realm and have access to the human world thing. But every book is the same. A werewolf king is sent to the human realm and falls in love. Rejection, etc.
Except this one. This is one is set IN the werewolf world and involves a commoner and a king (I don't know why they always have to be kings).
He rejects her because he was told h was having an affair (supposed AP confessed) and stole from OW. While he is literally hanging out constantly with OW. Ugh.
He rejects her in front of the whole court AFTER having her thrown in the dungeon.
But turns out that (of course) she is from an ancient bloodline and after she is banished, she returns to her people and becomes a queen. Of course, she was preggers, too.
He finds out after five years and shows up to grovel and she makes him sleep in a room in a barn. I loved that part.
They're banter is pretty cute.
Their time in the human realm is cute, but also made me sad. Like... what are we missing out on now with technology stealing our time. (She types on a laptop).
I mostly liked it. The scenes in her kingdom were the best. I loved how H groveled and put with everything she did. Plus the chicken.
My affection started to wan toward the end as conversations kept being repeated and a lot of other things.
My issues with the book were:
1) Pretty weak sauce reason for the king to reject his mate. He doesn't hold a trial or anything (they never hold a trial). Plus, why didn't anyone being blackmailed actually TALK to the king? Hey, I'm being blackmailed. Surely he could help. He has more power. He's the king!
2) He MARRIES the OW. And it's unclear if they sleep together or not. Like really unclear. No one confirms or denies it. And I hate it.
3) He is apparently a horrible king while he is mourning the h. Which, fine. Get that. But it's FIVE years! Surely there would be a coup at some point. I kinda wished he'd found out about h being a queen earlier and set out making amends. Like divorcing OW. Plus, he technically cheats on his wife. Like, a lot. I would not be cool with that.
4) The banter is cute, but also gets annoying toward the end of the book as it kinda covers for real conversations.
5) So while H is off groveling, OW makes herself regent (he didn't think to appoint one?) and when they come back, she says it takes three days to transfer power. She commands him to sleep in their room and all this stupid stuff. So H is just like "Ok." If it were me, I'd have her tied up in so many meetings about transferring power, like if she made changes to the meal plans, she wouldn't find time to conspire or sleep. Plus, it's only been a week! I'm thinking of all the times there were regents in history, like Eleanor of Aquitaine. And no one who appointed a regent ever is like "Well, I'm back, let's wait the mandatory three days." Plot device showing. Of course, H does not use this time wisely. He's off doing nothing for the three days (seriously, he does nothing), which lets OW have time to conspire to have h and son arrested for being spies. Could have been prevented if you'd had all those meetings!
So, of course they have to go to the human realm to escape the death penalty. I mean, she could have just killed h on the spot. Which is fine. It's cute break in the book. Time in the human world is the common thread in these books.
6) His father is dying for pretty much the whole book and when they finally come back, they never visit him! That would be the first thing on my list! Plus getting him out of the murder castle. Show up, she says three days, he says cool, we will be at the lake castle and takes his dad along. We get one visit with his dying father! That he loves!
7) Constant talking about how horrible the clothing was (it's supposed a pseudo era) and how horrible corsets are. Corsets were not torture devices! Clothing had to be somewhat comfy or people wouldn't wear it!
8) Plot holes. Like the aforementioned device that has the OW being able to stay in power for 3 days. One big one is that h, being from the ancient bloodline, can use the alpha command. She uses it on the H a couple times. And then it must go away? Because it's never mentioned again, especially when it could be used! Why not command OW to confess her crimes when she pulls the regent thing? But my favorite one was this:
So they've fought back and during the requisite final battle, they corner the OW in the throne room.
“If I can’t have you,” she screams, pulling something from her bodice, “NO ONE CAN!”
The something is wolfsbane. She's going to poison herself and that will totally ruin H's life for ... reasons. Even when she's poisoning herself in a room of witnesses?
Hey, this would be a perfect time to use the Alpha command! Instead, h and H turn into wolves and knock the bottle out of OW's hand. Apparently the alpha command only works in her kingdom.
Then a wedding where she wears a dress made out of yoga pant material?
But all the talk about how horrible corsets is what really turned me off the book.

maybe like 2.5 stars.

The beginning ruined the book a bit.

Other things that bothered me. There was no one night stand. Emilia spent time in the palace after finding out Hunther was her mate, then she left and returned to live in the palace for 3 months before everything went tits up.

Bookish mate? where? She mentions Hunther's palace library once, and Hunther asks about Emilia at the Library in her kingdom to discover she sometimes volunteers there. Only in the last few chapters is she given a couple books from a book club

I absolutely despise body betrayal tropes. I also hate the FMC seducing the MMC to get what she wants story line.

Emilia kind of sucks. She's almost using Hunther for sex, and why would you have sex multiple times with someone you don't trust.

There's plot holes all over. One of them is when they return to Hunther's palace. Inara setup a dinner and is doing all the things jealous OW do. Hunther interrupts her and makes an announcement that Kona is his son and heir, and absolutely nobody is shocked about him having a son. His son is in the room and he just asked Emilia did "uncle hunter" just say I was going to be king. Like, she's not even a little mad that he outed their son and put him in danger. It's not until chapters later Kona starts calling him papa, and almost to the end when he learns that Hunther is his dad

I pretty much hate read this.

So, you’re telling me that he was having an emotional affair with his ex-girlfriend. He gaslights the FMC when she confronts him after catching him and the ex together discussing his lingering feelings for her. However, he rejects the FMC when he suspects she’s cheating, which occurs after he’s already imprisoned her because someone framed her with the ex’s missing necklace.

Then, he marries the ex immediately after rejecting his mate. The FMC is pregnant and nearly dies during childbirth due to complications related to rejection. She never mentions this in the reasons she hates him BTW. Despite this, she takes him back because he missed her, but he never sought her out because he had exiled her.

Five years pass. He was married to the deceitful ex for FIVE years. He expressed remorse but wasn’t remorseful enough to divorce the ex or search for his mate. It’s pathetic.

First rate banter

This is a great take on the rejected mate trope. The FMC is rejected by the MMC and unbeknownst to him is pregnant when he locks her in his dungeon. She is exiled and spends the next five years building a kingdom of her own. The MMC is full of regrets almost immediately and is anguished while married to the woman who set the betrayal in motion. A chance encounter brings them together again and the MMC learns that he has a son. He is determined to do better and earn the FMC’s forgiveness. At first I wasn’t sure if I felt like he had really changed, but he proved himself over and over with his actions. I like the growing and changing both characters did and the banter between all the characters was hilarious. Smarta$$ery at its finest. A very entertaining read and one of the more satisfying “rejected mate” stories I’ve read.

This wasn’t bad. What kind of was a bummer was that everything felt rushed at the very start of the story like the MCs relationship, the introduction of the ow, the ow causing problems, and then the rejection. Bc of the rush I wasn’t really stung by the rejection but that’s not to say it wasn’t good. The fmc was witty, fierce, and she made that mmc grovel. The mmc imo was a beta and even after he convinces the fmc to be with him, he still allows the ow to cause drama. It did run a bit too long and at the 80% mark I was like “how many more chapters do I still gotta read?” It seemed like the authors kind of threw in the romance novel bit between the MCs at the end there so as to prove the fmc was “bookish”. I’d definitely read more from these authors.

h was a doormat for H (Spoiler)

Don’t bother if you can’t stand a hero who dumps h in front of the entire court, imprisons her, then exiles her before going onto marry the OW who spun all the lies in the first place.

Years later he’s still be married to the OW but still chasing after h. But we’re also still kissing the OW aka his wife for years in front of the h. The h who is still pinning away for this married loser 😳

Love this!

It’s the banter for me! Yes it’s steamy, yes it’s plot twisty, but the back and forth, wildly sarcastic banter to me is everything! I must look up the rest of this author’s books!

fascinating

I have to say the author outdid herself. I haven’t read such a good book in a while. The dialogue smart and funny. Although sometimes to long but I still enjoyed it a lot

I didn't like how weak the male was, and so I couldn't imagine him as this great king.

a good read

It was a good book in love and forgiveness. It was a bit drawn out though. However the overall story was good. Well thought out, it just dragged a bit at the end.
