Trapped on an island. Nowhere to hide. The hunt has begun.

For Roger, Jerome, Ryan, and Chris, a trip to a private island mansion off the coast of Louisiana was supposed to be a grand reunion. It was a chance to relive their high school glory days with their wives, fueled by billionaire-status luxury and endless drinks.

But as the sun sets over the bayou, the group realizes that the foundations of their friendship are rotting from years of hidden resentment, infidelity, and cold-blooded secrets.

The vacation turns into a gruesome nightmare when a masked killer emerges from the dense forest. Armed with a bow and a set of elite surgical skills, the hunter begins picking the group off one-by-one, turning the island into a literal killing field. There is no cell service, the boat is sabotaged, and the radio is smashed.

As the body count rises, the survivors must face a terrifying reality: the most dangerous threat isn’t the man in the ghillie suit—it’s the person standing right next to them.

In a game of shadows where old loyalties are incinerated, only one thing is certain—the blade has been drawn, and it must taste blood before the night is over.

Yall, the speed with which I binged this 🤣! From the first page, we hit the ground running and soon, we were sprinting full speed ahead. This was so fast paced. Long-time friends finally come together after a year apart to visit an island that was purchased by one of them. The friend group is made up of a few couples and there is a lot of drama and toxicity going on. Let’s throw them all together on a remote island.. what could go wrong!? Wait a minute.. is someone else on the island!? Things start to go terribly wrong. Timothy King doesn’t ease off the gas for a single moment in this one. To me, it felt like a whodunnit (Knives Out?) meets Scream.. on an isolated island. No one can be trusted. I had no doubt that Timothy would knock this one out of the park. He always does 😅. Now that I know the ending, I feel like I need to go back and read it again!

This is one of the most heart racing stories I've read in a long time. When I say you won't be able to put this down... get ready for a wild ride. You will think twice before going on that weekend getaway with friends.

**ARC Review**
Author: Timothy King
Book: We Were Never Really Friends
Book Rating: 4 Stars
Genre: Slasher Horror

I received this ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.

We Were Never Really Friends by Timothy King was a rollercoaster of a novel that constantly sped up throughout the narrative without ever slowing down. From page one to the final page, there was constant terror and adrenaline that will really hook any reader of the horror/thriller genre.

The story kicks off with a group of friends going to a private island for a weekend vacation. They were planning on swimming, drinking, and partying the entire time. Until a figure in a camouflage military outfit starts picking them off one by one. In classic thriller style, the reader is right along with everyone trying to put together the pieces and figure out who the killer is.

Have you ever hated all the characters so much that you wanted everyone to die? I don’t mean that as a bad thing. King really brought these characters to life and made each of them feel real, but in doing so, he made some pretty gnarly, screwed-up characters that made it hard to root for anyone in particular.

The only downfall to this read was the ending. I know this was the ending that the book needed, but I felt that with all the emotion that I put into reading this book, I didn’t get the payoff that I was expecting. Don’t let my opinion sway you, though. This book was great, and I know plenty of people who truly enjoyed the ending.

I still highly recommend this book and urge everyone to check this out on May 12th for its release. Preorders are available now!

If "toxicity horror" were a thing, this book would be the gold standard! "We Were Never Really Friends" combines so much viciousness and drama with the best kind of survival and vacation horror, it doesn't take long to realize you've signed up for a wild ride: non-stop backstabbing, shameless cheating, the most unhealthy social vibes topped with strong slasher elements, the story set on a remote island, no holds barred - this is a definite banger by any standard! Just make sure to bring your own popcorn lol

Reading this felt like being caught unawares in the middle of a brawl, where everyone ends up at each other's throats, while the real disaster is brewing in the background. This group of childhood friends and their wives do act like real people, or no less ridiculous and outlandish than certain real couples we all know, messy relationships and what not, but King's writing accepts no filler, making every story turn come vividly alive - noone is off the table, even if (with a couple of such huge hints) it's easy to guess the identity of the killer. Deciphering the why, however, was not at all obvious; add the memorable killings and the action sequences, and you've got a truly savage book with a totally unexpected ending!

Highly recommend if you enjoy slashers, island horror, and stories where the ugly side of marriage is a character in its own right!

This was an ARC provided by Timothy King. Thank you for the copy!

This was a five-star read up until the end, but it is still a strong four (almost five) stars. Timothy King knows how to write mean, fast-paced books that don't give in to traditions in storytelling in the genres he writes. The story has some unexpected turns and some expected turns, most of which were satisfying. He writes such excellent, imperfect characters to draw emotions toward them. There were characters I hated, characters I wanted to hate but felt for, and about one who was the good one I could root for. Even the meanest of the bunch had a surprising depth that made them more complicated. Add that to thrills and great, visceral kills, and this was a great slasher.

My only gripes were of the POV swaps and the final chapter. I have mixed feelings about the ending, but I think it is still fitting even if I'm wobbly on how I feel about it. The POV changes were jarring, as I'd be in the head of one character and the next paragraph in the head of another. I wish there were scene breaks to make proper transitions between characters, as that would flow better from POV to POV. But with strong characters, I can overlook that issue, and it's a common one I tend to find in books.

When Roger buys his wife a private island, he invites his old friends to stay for a few days. Four couples, each with their own secrets and simmering problems, arrive expecting a fun, luxurious getaway. But the mood quickly shifts when Chris is injured and swears he saw a man in camouflage lurking in the woods. Who is he? And more importantly, how are any of them going to make it off the island alive?

Hoo boy, he’s done it again.
This was a fast-paced read that had me hooked from page one. I’ll admit, though, every single character annoyed me at first. The men acted like they were still in high school, and the women weren’t much better. There was so much cheating and toxic behavior that I found myself thinking, when they start dying, they kind of have it coming. I was genuinely bracing for it to happen to each of them.
But then the deaths started, and they were brutal. As awful as they’d been, I found myself feeling bad for them.
I figured out who the man in the woods was fairly early on, but I couldn’t quite piece together the motive until everything was revealed.
Yet another brilliant read from a fantastic author.

A group of friends head to their wealthy friend’s private island expecting nothing but sun, cocktails, and carefree fun. Instead, old grudges simmer and the dream getaway turns into a nightmare. One by one, the friends start dying. Trapped on the island with a killer in their midst, the survivors are left asking two terrifying questions: who’s behind it and will any of them make it out alive?

This is a tense, blood-soaked slasher that completely hooked me. I had such a hard time putting it down because every chapter raised the stakes. The paranoia, the shifting suspicions, the sense that no one could be trusted. I had to know what would happen next and who, if anyone, would survive.

The last chapter, though, knocked it down from a five-star read to a four because I struggled to wrap my head around that ending.

Still, this is a solid slasher book, and if you loved Seven Rabbits, you’ll gobble this one up!

This is an interesting idea about a group of mostly life long friends getting together, possibly for the last time as just friends, before life, kids obligations start to take precedent. The story starts off a bit off in the prologue, but things slowly to come together. The book almost played out as a movie in my mind, as the group finds it's way to the island they will be hanging out on things start off great as they dock the boat and find the new beautiful house of their friend. It's shaping up to be a great weekend, but then slowly the group finds their friendships weren't as strong as they thought and something is a bit off this weekend!

This rating was difficult, I'm comparing it to Timothy King's other work most specifically Seven Rabbits which I loved so much, and this one was almost as good. I think that's why this one got a star less, but if I could it would be a 4.75 out of 5! This is a fun story with a twist I wasn't expecting. Have fun with it, it will fly by fast!

When a group of friends travel to their friend’s private island for a weekend away, there are more than secrets lurking. As they find themselves fighting for their lives and each other, they realise that maybe they were never really friends after all.

This is a blood-pounding, high tension horror that really keeps your heart racing. The characters are all terrible, in the best possible way, and they are written so expertly and so realistically that you really do feel like you know them intimately.
The story is fast-paced and chilling, with incredible world-building that you can really picture the story happening around you.

With gore, mystery, humour, drama, and chilling revelations, once again Timothy proves that he is a star on the rise. Firmly cemented as an auto-buy author for me, this is his year. Trust me, this one deserves hype

Over the top, brimming with blood, and filled with characters you will love to watch meet their fate, We Were Never Really Friends by Timothy King is packed with more action than a John Wick movie and more gore than Cronenberg flick.

This story is about six friends vacationing on a private island (owned by one of them) off the coast of Louisiana. I can say with complete honesty, I did not care about any of them. They were all selfish, unfaithful, terrible people and I think that’s what made this book so fun. Timothy has a way of writing some of the most unlikable characters and putting them through a gauntlet of torture that keeps the reader coming back for more.
Coming in at just under 200 pages, this one is a very quick read and is the most cinematic of his work so far. Fully in his element, Timothy King pulls no punches and doesn’t spare a soul in We Were Never Really Friends

ARC REVIEW

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again. Timothy King is a master of writing characters you love to see meet gruesome ends. The author is in his element bringing another faced paced slasher that grips you and doesn’t let go until you finish.

I felt like I was watching a movie while I read this one. If you were a fan of Seven Rabbits, you are surely to enjoy We Were Never Really Friends. And while Seven Rabbits would probably never get made into a film (for REASONS, IYKYK) I could very easily see We Were Never Really Friends gracing a big screen one day. It’s fun, brutal, and full of gore.

Four and a half stars rounded up!

Timothy King is at it again! From the very first page, the prologue sets the tone with intensity and immediately pulls you in. There’s a sense of unease that only grows the longer you read!
What starts off as a simple getaway to a private island with friends quickly spirals into something much darker. The suspense builds and makes it impossible to put down! This isnt your typical who done it, it’s darker and far more brutal. The tension between the characters keeps you guessing, and the isolated island setting adds to the claustrophobic, dangerous atmosphere.

This starts with a bang and doesn’t let up. The interesting thing, at least for me, is that I hated every single one of the characters, but I’m giving it 5 stars. Usually if I don’t like the characters I don’t bother to finish the book, but with this one I don’t think I would have rated it this high if I didn’t hate everyone. I think everyone got exactly what they deserved and I’m totally here for it. I also loved the connection at the end, but I don’t want to spoil anything so go read it and find out for yourself 😊

I have read a few books by Timothy King. To me Seven Rabbits has been my top one by him. This one is now my favorite. It plays like a horror movie while you read it. We get a story full of secrets and lies and twists. Every character is flawed and most of them are just bad people. This all leads to a solid story with a fun ride full of death and destruction. You think you might like one of the characters then it is just a nope! That one is also an a-hole! I could not put it down. This was a “one more chapter” situation until I hit the last one. Loved this one start to finish.

T King just doesn’t miss! If you’re in the mood for a fun slasher style story, you’re going to love this one.

As much as I love being connected with the MCs in the books I read and wanting them to thrive in their storyline, I’m also totally ok with hating everyone (especially in a horror novel) cause I know I’ll be satisfied with the ending LOL and that was absolutely the case here!

It’s funny, it gave me the adrenaline rush, and it was strong all the way through. It took me a few chapters to get a hold of all of our main characters, but overall a great suspenseful read!

Tim went back to his roots with this slasher! Seven Rabbits has been my all-time favorite by him but this one is right there with it. When a group of friends get together on a private island, secrets emerge, rivals are revealed, and the group falls apart one by one.

With fantastic kills, really, really unlikeable characters (in the best way), and a plot that twists and turns from page one, I highly recommend this one! The relationships between the friends and partners are so well written, I felt like I knew them all personally.

Tim has another winner with this one!

At an annual catch up, a group of old school friends plan to spend a week in luxury at one of their privately owned islands. Who will survive the horror that awaits, and live to tell the tale?
There's always something really fun about revenge stories, and Timothy King is a master of his craft! It's a story you just can't put down as each scene builds and builds until you reach the conclusion. You even end up rooting for characters you may not like, with a few twists and turns thrown in for good measure. This author is fast becoming a favourite.

Timothy King has done it yet again! Another book that hooks and reels you in the whole time. I didn’t want to put this down.

4 couples and best friends are going on their yearly trip to a private island owned by one of the group members. Most are excited to go, others not so much, but why? Maybe the secrets, scandals, and affairs have something to do with it. This is a must read and is available for preorder now!

If you’re a fan of the Scream franchise, you’re going to love this book.

This is a fast-paced, “who’s the killer?” slasher with the most toxic group of friends I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading about. The tension never lets up!

Timothy King delivers an intense ride packed with action, drama, and twists that kept me guessing the entire time. Nothing felt predictable, and that’s hard to pull off in a genre like this.

And the ending? Let me say this in all caps: PERFECT.

If you love messy friendships, high-stakes secrets, and classic slasher vibes with a modern edge, this one absolutely delivers.

This was one of those books that when it stepped on the gas it did not let up, that includes the ending. I was hooked on this book from the second I started reading and could not put it down. There are some slasher styles books that when you read them you can see what is happening and what could happen and with this one, I was shocked the whole time. Trust me when I say this is one you do not want to pass up.

What we always know with a Timothy King book is that it will be fast-paced, entertaining and a lot of fun, and with We Were Never Really Friends once again, this is what we get.

I'm a sucker for the trope of friends getting away together for a holiday. Between them all, there is more baggage than Heathrow airport. The friendships are fraught with tension and unspoken secrets. They do their best to put this behind them, and bury hatchets for the sake of harmony. The private island is out in the middle of nowhere and death has also joined them!

Scene by scene, you question everything and everyone, and once again it's a book you can't put down. Everyone has secrets, and perhaps it's this that makes it hard to feel much sympathy for them. Somebody is picking them off one-by-one and nobody is safe.

This is a quick book to read, and a lot of fun. Personally, it didn't quite have me rooting for justice, and be completely satisfied as I was with Seven Rabbits, but it is another incredibly solid offering from one of the new school masters of horror. 💀🔪🩸

When Roger buys his bougie wife their own private island he obviously has to invite his long time friends to come celebrate for a reunion style vacation.
Each couple have their secrets and issues and they come out in the worst possible ways when a man with a bow and arrow is spotted and people begin to die.
A heart pumping race to stay alive. Everyone kinda sucks.
