Colby Agency #9

Undercover Wife

Rate this book
Specialist John Logan was dedicated to duty--the mission always top priority--and he'd do anything to carry out an assignment. Even if it meant posing as the unthinkable: husband to the newly "recruited" Erin Bailey....

He'd shown up in the middle of the night and offered Erin her freedom if she'd pose as his wife to catch an insidious drug lord/arms dealer. Except, given the compromising position she found herself in as victim of a frame-up, Erin was totally at the mercy of her "guardian" as an untrained, stand-in agent. All she had to do was assume someone else's identity, learn the ins and outs of weaponry and share a bed with her dangerously attractive "husband," John Logan. And if she came out of this with her life intact, she'd surely lose her heart in the process!

When all else fails, the most highly trained, covert agents are called in to "recover" the mission. This elite group is known as "Specialists". Nothing is too dangerous for them...except falling in love.

I saw this first on Goodreads, I thought like, 'Whoa! The title is so cheesy.' Like just another Harlequin books. So, I set my expectation not really high.

But you know, you can't just simply judge the book by its title. This book apparently... AWESOME!!

Thriller and romance in one package. Not too sweet, since there are so many action scenes. And--well, you have to read it by yourself, I guess.

I couldn't help my self swooning just by reading about Logan. :P

The premise of this book sounded like a delicious intersection of Romance and Action, fitting since it was part of the Harlequin Intrigue line, which tried to add a bit of suspense and thriller aspects into their usual offerings.

Author Debra Webb was a pretty good pick for the line, as she definitely managed to blend in a bit more plot than some. Most Romance novels tend to suffer from being too insular for my liking, with a heavy focus on our two romantic leads and, perhaps, the competition, if there is one in that particular novel. Side-characters and actual plot unrelated to the romantic tension tend to suffer. But Webb makes sure we have more to chew on without sacrificing the main draw--the romantic tension.

Erin Bailey is a computer hacker who was arrested for hacking computers of companies she wasn't supposed to hack and since she is a dead-ringer (no pun intended) for the murdered partner of special agent John Logan, the agency he works for, Mission Recovery, busts her out of prison to accompany him to Mexico to infiltrate and dismantle a drug cartel. Sounds more like a Gold Eagle novel than a Harlequin to me! But things get softer once we get to Mexico and more familiar Romance angle takes center stage.

One nice aspect of this story is that both Logan and Erin are fairly rounded characters and don't instantly fall into unrequited lust with each other. Webb gives them room to grow and makes their evolution feel natural. Especially since they are each other's only ally in a dangerous environment.

The actual plot has some nice last-minute twists, some sexy fun times, and even a tiny bit of action. Naturally I would have taken a little more action, but that's not the genre and for what I got, I was pleased.

The final chapter went just a touch too far into silly land for my tastes, but maybe I'm an irreparable cynic.

Overall, this was a fun romp with a good setting, interesting characters, and some thrills mixed in. Worth the read.

Undercover..............
Love does come from unusual places. This is one of the BEST romance books I have ever read. Mrs. Webb really knows now to get the blood pumping in you veins. One minute, the protagonist are enveloped in a never ending intimacy, and the next, they are running for their lives!! She nicely portrait Erin Bailey's character and the emotional rollercoaster she went through during the time period of their "mission". Same can be said for John Logan (a.k.a Logan). It's an emotional rollercoaster for the readers too. If you are a book worm as I am, you'll know what I mean. She doesn't leave a breathing period. The plot goes up and down all the way till the end. After my second read, I am still willing to read it once more. It's just great. It is true about what the say about The Specialists - "Nothing is too dangerous for them...except falling in love." You should read Undercover Wife to know what I mean

Disappointing copy

The story is what you expect from this series but disappointing because nearly all the correct punctuation has been replaced with question marks. It was frustrating that I had to pay to read this book (not available through prime reading. Also not available through Kindle unlimited membership).

I have enjoyed every book I have read of Debra Webb. Undercover Wife is engaging. Debra Webb has a way of drawing you in and you feel you are a part of the background watching the characters rather than just reading about them.

It started a little slow. Thankfully, the pacing picked up halfway through. I enjoyed the story. But I would have really liked to see Erin and Logan connect more and talk.
