About the author

Mark Hilborn is a recently retired professional with a 40-year career in technology and healthcare, specializing in sales and sales leadership. He lives in Central Florida with his wife and is blessed with four children and five grandchildren.

Throughout the years, Mark delighted his children—and later his grandchildren—with hundreds of bedtime stories about Benji the Bear. Each child believed the stories were created just for them, with characters inspired by their own lives and adventures.

Upon retiring, Mark was inspired by the remarkable artwork of his four- and five-year-old grandsons to bring Benji’s adventures to life in his first children’s picture book—illustrated entirely by his two grandsons.

This latest book marks the beginning of a series, “battle-tested” over the years at bedtime, with original stories and artwork created by the author. In addition to writing, Mark is learning to paint in the Impressionist style and hopes to share with the next generation what it truly means to be a man, husband, and father.

As a bear, there is a lot of social pressure for him to enjoy fishing just like his friends do, but he quickly learns that following the crowd only leads to his own unhappiness. This is such a sweet look at childhood friendships. Even though fox and rabbit are all fish, they don't judge Benji when he decides to go a different way. The character of the grandmother is the real "hero" here, though. She sees a bear in her window and instead of been scared, she shows kindness and hospitality.
