His childhood best friend showed up…and started taking her place.
Serena Watts thought she had it all—a thriving acting career, a little sister she’d do anything to protect, and a solid relationship with action star Hudson Holt. Their love had survived long-distance shoots, flashing cameras, and grueling schedules.
Until his female bestie moved to Hollywood after a bad breakup, becoming Hudson’s constant shadow.
Now Serena’s heart is breaking under every dismissed hurt that Hudson refuses to see. And when he finally realizes all the damage his fake friend caused, it might be too late to grovel his way back.
This was meh, but it definitely was a book for some hate reading. I was pissed all throughout, and obviously that's on me. I've dropped at least four books in the last 3 days; unfortunately, this one managed to hold my interest just enough to finish it, probably because it's only a novella. Despite it being short, it sure AF made my blood pressure skyrocket so fast—well, books with stupid MMCs often do.
Anyway, it has your usual MMC with a girl bff who was oblivious to the antics of said best friend. It was him repeatedly defending, choosing, and making excuses for the bff over his girlfriend. Even though the FMC kept saying she was uncomfortable and she kept pointing out the "accidents" the bff kept on making. He finally realized he's such a stupid dumbass at 51%, I think, and then officially cut off the bff at the 60% mark.
Don't really care for the "grovel"; he didn't do much anyway, and she didn't hold back for long. The OW caused problems between them for months, yet the supposed grovel lasted only for, idk, probably more than a month??? The timeline wasn't clear, and that annoyed me even more.
Overall, I disliked this story with every fiber of my being. But tbf, I disliked every story with stupid men who prioritized the OW over the FMC, sooo what I'm feeling isn't anything new. There's no one really to blame but me for hoping that one of these days, at least one of these books would solidly redeem a guy in my eyes. Sadly, that day has still not come, and that book still hasn't been found.
PS. I'm not going to rate this book because, if I do, it would be a 1-star for me. That's unfair (imo) since I knew what I was getting into, and the book doesn't deserve such a low rating just because it wasn't to my taste. But I'll still rant about this; after all, I spent my time reading it, so I think I’ve earned that much. 🤷🏽♀️
I can’t even with Hudson 😅 if you like your MMC clueless this is the book for you. Hudson employees his BFF when she needs a job, she proceeds to mess with his girlfriend Serena.
Hudson ignores all of Serena’s warning and off course it blows up in his face.
A wonderful read with wonderful characters. I love this series
This started promising with some angst, but then fell flat. This author slightly reminds me of Maya Alden, but the delivery isn’t the same. The MMC is not cruel, just clueless. And a lot of the dialogue and sex were cliché and cheesy. But this book was better than the previous one. I think the author has potential.
It’s funny I actually liked some of her other books better when they actually got a lower rating than this one. I am one of those types that you love who you love not because you can’t help it but because you choose to. And I think that the acknowledgment of what he did to their relationship was overlooked quite a bit.
I think when you’re famous like these main characters were your reputation really matters and I think your pride should matter too. The truth is is that this, which really was a cheating scandal whether it happened or not, would follow them forever and I don’t think that there’s anyway that they could have a healthy relationship afterwards. I was really disappointed in the FMC because all it took was a cake for her walls to start to crumble after she had been publicly humiliated and ignored for months and months and months. And I’m sorry maybe intellectual intelligence is only an important trait to me, but the MMC was an idiot and she didn’t care. That really bothered me.
So again good book good author probably was 3 1/2 stars which a lot of times I round up to four but she’s only gotten five star ratings up to this point and I don’t think that’s fair so that’s why I ended up going with three stars. I do recommend it read it for yourself. You’ll probably be fine with it but I definitely wouldn’t have taken him back or at least I definitely wouldn’t have taken him back that quickly. I would’ve created space probably dated other people and then if my feelings still existed a year or two down the road, maybe then but yeah I just didn’t like him and I felt like she was a doormat.
I was in the mood for some angst and groveling but this didn’t deliver how I wanted it to.
This is your classic hero defends his girl best friend and it drives a wedge between him and his girlfriend.
I don’t know if this was supposed to soften the blow, but he didn’t really seem to think of Maddie like a best friend, so the angst didn’t even hit that hard? It just sort of made me feel like he was dumb. 😅
We are always thrown into the story with them having an established relationship and the friend already back in town so I found myself being told they’re super in love but not really seeing it. That made me not care all that much about their break.
Overall, it wasn’t for me but it was a quick read with some oblivious hero if you like that.

Serena is the sunshine FMC who swallows her words, buries her doubts and ignores her gut because she loves Hudson. Hudson is the TSTL MMC who trusts his childhood friend and keeps defending her when she oversteps or messes up with Serena. He's is confident that his friend did it on accident or just doesn't know how things are done in the big city vs the small-town they grew up in. Serena takes it until she just can't anymore. This was a great read. I couldn't put it down.
Thoughts: In reading choices, I could care less about actors as main characters. Probably because I figure going in they are insincere liars who seek attention, and are drama llamas already--not the kind of characters I enjoy reading about. These 2 were fairly tame, but I only read the last half of the book so I am not a great example. I wasn't invested going in, and I'm not one going out. Again, YMMV. I am not a good audience for this.
She pulls stunts to hurt Serena. Messes up important orders, leaks her Oscar dress design, works out pictures to look like Hudson js cheating with her.
Serena leaves and Hudson wises up.
No gut punch

Just none of this felt believable. The confession interview was also so unoriginal I felt like I was reading a shortened choppier version of a much better book.
First off, I LOVE these stories where the Hero’s evil “girl best friend” shows up and tries her best to monkey wrench the Hero’s new romantic relationship. This story though…. I dunno. I felt ZERO connection between Hudson and Serena. Serena acted pretentious through the story can came off as a bit of a snob. Maddie wasn’t really very good at being an evil scheming manipulator. Hudson looked like a dumbass for not seeing that his incompetent friend was screwing shit up on purpose. And Maddie came clean so easily when asked if she was being shady. Everything resolved super easily, even though IMO the stuff that broke up Hudson and Serena was kind of dumb and kind of a non starter. Since there was no connection between the main characters, I really didn’t care what happened to either of them. More importantly, this story had ZERO ANGST in it, and that was really disappointing. ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
Short on time but need a romance fix? Do you want a betrayal that does not involve cheating? Do you want a hero that you genuinely like, but he still messes up? This might be the book for you!
This is the story of Hudson and Serena, or at least it should be, but Maddie, Hudson’s childhood friend from Indiana wants to make it the Hudson and Maddie show.
Hudson and Serena are both actors, which as you know can make relationships more challenging already. Serena was never going to date someone from her profession, but couldn’t resist Hudson. There is a reason for that, Hudson is really a good guy! He is! He loves Serena and Serena’s teen sister Avery that she has taken in. So, I never felt an overwhelming rage with Hudson, I just did a lot of eye rolling. He really needed a strong shake to get that hamster moving on the wheel….but the only thing that woke up that hamster was Serena telling him she was done being a side character in their relationship!
Maddie, the ow, is your typical “innocent” girl best friend of Hudson. He hadn’t seen her in years, but after a bad break up she came to California to be soothed by Hudson. He gave her a superfluous job as one of his assistants and even let her stay with him for a bit. He never crossed any lines romantically, and the reader can see that his interest in Maddie is just about helping some childhood chum out!
Maddie does(and succeeds) her best to undermine his relationship with Serena(just like she had done with girlfriends of his in high school). She is so obvious about it, that my only complaint about Hudson is that he is so clueless! The betrayal here is that he basically dismisses all of Serena’s concerns…even her 16 year old sister is on to Maddies mean girl ways. When Maddie escalates her campaign to secure Hudson, her antics move beyond affecting Serena’s personal life to affecting her professional life. When Serena leaves, she leaves Hudson with enough bread crumbs that leads him quickly to Maddie’s house of lies and manipulations. He wastes no time getting rid of her, and the author does as well. That is to say you will not get any Glenn Close coming out of the bathtub moments, Maddie is effectively eliminated so the author can focus on Hudson winning back the love of his life, and yes it is clear throughout the story that Serena is the one!
It is not just pretty words that Hudson uses to get back his gals, it is his actions. Little sister Avery is one of his biggest supporters(although she made it clear he only gets one chance to do it right). Hudson takes care in putting Serena’s feelings and needs above his own. Because for him, his life has little meaning if Serena isn’t there to share it with him!
So, if you are looking for a little escape from the jerk heroes out there, but you still need him to mess up to feel good lol…then I think this little gem should do the trick. As a novella, it is quick and doesn’t go deep, but it crosses off those boxes to tell a complete story with warmth, humor, anger, and a dash of smexy!!!
Serena and Hudson, both actors, have a good relationship and have kept it relatively low key with regard to publicity. Hudson is getting ready to ask Serena and her sister to move in with him, but his good intentions never pan out.
Enter OW Maggie, childhood best friend, who needs Hudson's help. He creates a job for her, helps her with housing, and is pretty much available to her when she "needs" something. She sabotages Serena, little things at first and then escalates so that she is publicly humiliated.
Serena had voiced her concerns to Hudson numerous times, but he kept brushing her off, saying that Maggie was just learning the ropes, didn't mean anything by it, she would do better, the usual defense. The only one blind to her machinations, of course, is Hudson. The last straw for Serena was the public humiliation where Maggie had exposed her intended red-carpet dress. She lets Hudson know that she is done.
When he realizes the full extent of Maggie's deception, only because she confessed, he is devastated by his actions and how he totally dismissed Serena. Cue the grovel, his self-reflection, and his actions/words to make up for all of his transgressions. But is it enough to earn Serena's trust?!?
Serena's sister, Avery was a nice side character. I also liked how we got to visit Tessa from Hale & Honey Bakery. Lastly, we get a glimpse as to who's story is next in series. Cannot wait.
An Emotional Rollercoaster Behind the Scenes "Fame & Fakery" is a gripping exploration of love, loyalty, and the devastating impact of blurred boundaries. Wren Shaw delivers a compelling story that feels both glamorous and heartbreakingly relatable.
Why It’s a Must-Read:
Compelling Protagonists: Serena’s journey is deeply moving. Watching such a strong woman navigate the quiet erosion of her relationship makes for a powerful, high-stakes emotional experience.
Juicy Drama: The "childhood best friend" trope is executed perfectly here, creating a tense atmosphere where you can’t help but root for Serena to find the peace and respect she deserves.
Vibrant Hollywood Setting: Shaw paints a vivid picture of life under the spotlight, balancing the glitter of fame with the raw, messy reality of personal heartbreak.
The Verdict: If you love contemporary romances filled with angst, celebrity drama, and a heroine you can truly rally behind, "Fame & Fakery" is a standout addition to the Betray Me Once series. It’s an addictive page-turner that asks if love can truly survive when the spotlight shifts.
I received an ARC of this book, and I am leaving this honest review voluntarily. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.
* OW drama * HEA between the original couple * Complete Standalone * Betrayal and Grovel * FMC Serena x MMC Hudson
This is Wren Shaws third book in the Betray me Once series, it can be read as a standalone however If you haven't read the other books I would highly recommend! Some of the characters also pop up in this book and you get a sneak intro of them.
This was a short read and can be read in one sitting, loved every second of it.
The first chapters start off with the cracks in the relationship caused by the "bestfriend". Wren does an amazing job in brining to life the way "small" issues overlooked by a partner can really cause damage. The book is full of OW drama there is a separation and it brings to light all that Hudson overlooked. Serena does not overexaggerate or try to fight back for more space and i thinn its a great point that when your feelings and relationship is not prioritised by your partner there is only so much you can do.The book moves from there and focuses on how Hudson wins Serena back.
If you're looking for a quick read with a Betrayal straight from the get go then I would recommend this.
When taking love for granted leaves you desperate and waiting.
I have absolutely adored this series, Wren has an amazing ability to create both clear & quiet links in each of the books for the next one in the series - so whilst you can most certainly read them standalone, reading the series in order gives you some hidden insights.
I love that this book is the perfect Romance Movie setup especially as our leading lady, in in fact a RomCom Leading Lady actress. Serena & Hudson are both Hollywood actors. They met when working on a movie together and fell in love. Then we have the OW Maddie - Hudson's childhood best friend who is bringing the OW drama. We have the quirky and epic younger sister Avery, who is supportive, spunky and provides Serena with the support she needs. It was a really fun, quick read and I could not put it down. Each of the books in the series are not long books, they are easy to read and I 100% recommend. The characters are well defined and written. The OW drama is fun and the grovel is even better.
I do not usually read “Hollywood” romances because the story usually focuses on the rich lifestyle and not much else. But this read is different. The tension and misunderstandings between the two main characters leads the story. And underneath it all is their love for each other trying to shine through.
Serena and Hudson are a Hollywood power couple, but he lets an old hometown friend, Maddie, interfere with their life together. He’s not interested in Maddie romantically and is just trying to be a friend. But friend blinders can be as bad as family blinders and Hudson just can’t see Maddie’s actions as malicious. It's only when Serena finally says enough that Hudson realizes what he needs to do to repair his relationship with Serena.
I like Serena’s strength, her fierce protection of her sister who lives with her, and her attempts to stay with Hudson through all the Hollywood drama. And poor Hudson, he’s just clueless for so long. Watching him slowly realize what he’s done and how much damage he must repair makes this a good read.
Book 3 in the Betray Me Once series. Reading book 2 helps to set up this book but not necessary to enjoy book 3.
A contemporary celebrity romance with the main characters of Serena and Hudson. The couple have a loving and strong relationship that has lasted a few years. Working on different movies keeps them busy and Serena is the guardian of her younger sister Avery.
The angst starts when Hudson‘s childhood friend Maddie is in town for an extended visit. This woman views Hudson as more than a friend and is determined to create a rift between him and Serena. This is obvious to everyone except Hudson who is loyal and continues to defend his friend. The steadily escalating ways in which Maddie sets out to sabotage Hudson‘s relationship with Serena finally drive a wedge between the happy couple.
Hudson has to take drastic steps to undo the damage and win back Serena‘s love and trust. The main characters showed tremendous growth during the storyline and the supporting characters of Avery and Hudson‘s assistant Sarah were truly awesome.
I wasn't planning on it but I read this in one go. It's a good read. Serena and Hudson have a great relationship and see a forever future together. That all starts to change when Hudson's childhood friend appears and Hudson lets her interfere with his relationship. I loved the characters. I liked Serena's sister Avery the most. She was probably the smartest person in the book. It's a good betrayal, no cheating, story. I only gave it 4 stars because there were small things that didn't fit for me. If their relationship was so solid then why did he keep choosing a childhood friend who he admitted he wasn't even very close to? When he's trying to make amends he says things like stepping up how he hadn't before but that wasn't really part of the betrayal. I just felt like the relationship had cracks before but it wasn't presented like that. Those are small things though. It's a really good story with good characters.
The story starts already in progress. Serena and Hudson have an established empty relationship. They're both A list actors (action and rom coms... how 2002 🤮). My sympathy was already low. The H's 'best friend' (Maddie) has already been messing with the relationship. Dress tampering, party crashing, birthday cake order cancelling; it felt like there was about to be a girlfight not a manstealing. Number of gut punches: zero.
The author was obsessed with Hollywood nonsense not universal human problems. I felt nothing for anyone. There was no proof the MCs had a romantic relationship, except for one totally out of pocket sex scene. There were more descriptions of cake than characterizations of people. What in ever-loving feeder relationship was this??? Man kept bringing her food even though everyone knows celebrities don't eat. H's live TV apology interview was cringe. The h's little sister was bad filler. Like I always say: you write a kid and I'm reading a cockblock.
This story is the cautionary tale of why you can't always bring everyone with you when you make the next stage in life and how blind people can be when it comes to childhood friends. The ML blinders were better than a race horse and it quickly become obvious that he had been wearing them for a long time. The OW knows how to play him and lean on years of knowing eachother and their hometown ways of life. The FL gave just enough benefit of the doubt before it was time to walk away and respect herself and show her little sister what she shouldn't take in life and that it was ok to live in your feels and work through them. His choice of grovel was perfect and the amount of time that she made him prove with actions that he fully understood what he had done was perfect.
I loved it! Despite its length it had all the feelings! I understand how difficult it is to unfold a story especially in about 100 pages and still not making it feel rushed. Could it have been a lengthy novel? Of course! But it wouldn't diminish its current importance because it truly felt whole. I loved both main characters and the sis was the cutest. And far mature for her age even though understandable from the way she was raised. I loved Serena and how she fought for her relationship until she put herself above and took no more BS. I loved Hudson and how naive he was and stupid for not believing the red flags his girlfriend showed him and after he realized his stupidity how he tried to fix everything. I received this arc and this is my honest opinion.
This is the third book in the series and although it works as a stand alone, it is enriched by having read the previous books. The h and H are a Hollywood couple who met while filming a movie together. The H is a few years older and more established in his career. The OW is from the H's hometown who comes to the H after a bad breakup. The H doesn't see a problem in helping the OW out despite the h's misgivings about the OW creating problems that the H excuses as "adjusting' to life in LA. He gives her a job and consistently puts the OW before the h. The last straw for the h is when photos linking the H and OW start appearing in the media. Finally the H sees the red flags in the h's warnings.
This is such a great addition to this series by Wren Shaw! This book is a riveting, emotional, grovel to a happy ending. It follows Serena and Hudson who are both actors trying to make their relationship work while in the limelight. Hudson’s childhood friend throws a wrench in their relationship making Serena lose trust in Hudson when he puts his friend before the woman he loves. Hudson has a long way to go to get back in good graces with his love, while Serena has to learn to trust in him again. I really loved this book and highly recommend this series if you are a fan of the trope grovel to a happy ending.
I really like this story. Hudson and Serena have career in Hollywood that keeps them in public eye and with quite busy schedules. They deeply love each other and even though their schedules leave them very less time for them to be together, their relationship was very strong. But when Hudson’s childhood friend, Maddie came in his life and started messing with their relationship, instead of trusting Serena’s judgment, he stayed loyal to Maddie. By the time he realized his mistakes, Serena decided she needed to choose peace over him. he removed Maddie from his life and steadily started putting Serena first every time and groveled to her. They found a way back to each other. I loved their hea.
when reading the previous book in the series i knew i wanted to read Serena's story A Hollywood romance doesn't mean a instant happy ending Serena thinks the world of Hudson but he has his blinkers on when comes to his female best friend Maddie She comes from a small town comes to visit and doesn't go home he feels for her so sets her up as a assisted but of course this gives her the chance to make innocent mistakes she wants Serena out of the picture and so portrays her as a jealous insecure girlfriend can't wait for lila's story

I enjoyed this book. I liked that it was about them, grounded in their love and working it out. I liked that there were no other person of interest to distract from them. I would have liked to see a little more understanding on why he did what he did. Let's be real, anyone if us would have a hard time thinking someone we know would go to lengths like that to cause damage. It would seem so far out there and when he realized it I did like his response. Over all, a good book.
Hudson and Serena were a cute couple. I liked this story. In the big scheme of things, the drama and the angst and hurt was minimal. Of course Hudson had hurt Serena. But this story doesn’t involve any sort of cheating or truly truly terrible things. Which I’m glad about. But I’m also glad that Serena stirred her ground. And she did not try to power and continue to feel like her opinion didn’t matter. And thank the Lord Hudson got smart and saw through Maddie‘s tricks finally.
