Will Rosser is smart. Will Rosser is creative. Will Rosser is driven.
He sounds a whole lot like his older brother, Jon Scott, who's successful and well on his way to a good life after the hardships their family faced growing up.
One event is all it takes to change Will's trajectory, though.
Will Rosser is at a Crossroads.
This novella is a tie-in to the Choisie series. If you have read the Choisie series, CROSSROADS takes place the summer after Livvy's first year of College. NOTE: You do not need to read the Choisie series first.
*** If you have not read the Choisie series, this review may contain mild spoilers.
Lori Otto recently set a goal for herself. She wanted to write and publish a short story about Will Rosser in just two weeks. It’s a goal she not only met, but even surpassed! Crossroads is a 22,000-word post-Choisie series novella about the older of Jon Scott’s two half-brothers. Many of the characters you already know and love from the Choisie series star in this mature young adult novella because it ties in with the series.
For those who have not already read Lori Otto’s Choisie series, I’ll share some background information about Will and his family. Will has an older half-brother named Jon Scott and a younger brother named Max. Their single mother is an alcoholic. Because the three brothers don’t have a father figure in their life, Jon took on the role as man of the house. Jon has made an effort to be available for his brothers over the years and, more recently, in between college classes and his internship. Jon attended baseball games and provided advice for his siblings. He encouraged them to watch over their mother and to study hard so they will be successful in life. As Jon grew older, he groomed Will to take over his role as the man of the house.
After their mother was arrested, she was forced to face her alcoholism. She moved their family from Manhattan to Utah so they could all be together while she was able to get the help she needed. Will lived in Utah for a year and a half, including his entire sophomore year of high school. At the end of the school year, Will had to leave his best friend and his first love behind to move back to Manhattan with his family.
In Crossroads, we learn that Will has planned a weekend trip to Utah over the summer break to visit his girlfriend, Laila and his best friend, Landry. It’s a trip he has planned so that he can say goodbye to Laila. Will is at a crossroads in his life. He is very much in love with Laila, but he knows he needs to say goodbye. Will and Laila both understand this visit will be the end of their relationship, and, although Will doesn’t realize it, his life will be changed in more ways than one.
Although Will’s character does play more of a role in Dear Jon, he really doesn’t get a lot of page time in the rest of the Choisie series. What I enjoyed the most about Crossroads is getting to know Will as a character and seeing his character develop throughout the novella. Crossroads is not a long story, but readers will definitely see him experience some changes in his life. Like his brother Jon, I just fell in love with his character. Will is smart. He loves physics. He has an extreme passion for music. Not only does he love music, but we are able to see the beginnings of something special. Will just might be a musical prodigy.
I don’t think it is absolutely necessary for someone to have read the Choisie series before reading this novella. If you have not read any novels by Lori Otto, Crossroads might be a great introduction to her writing. I found Crossroads intriguing, and I absolutely want to read more about Will Rosser! In my opinion, Crossroads is a solid 5-star novella!
Just when I thought I couldn't love Lori Otto's writing any more than I already do, she gives us Crossroads. A novella that is as touching as it is sweet, as heartbreaking as it is heartwarming.
We get a glimpse into the life of Will Rosser. He's Jon Scott's younger brother, the middle of 3 boys. Jon, if you don't already know. is a key character in the Choisie series, Livvy Holland's love interest. He practically raised Will since they had a less than stellar childhood and now Will at 16 is off to Utah to say a final goodbye to his first love, Laila, since moving back to NYC a few months prior.
I honestly didn't know what to expect with this novella, but what the author flawlessly delivers is the seemingly simple tale of young love and the drive to make one last weekend together memorable. Watching through Will's eyes his desire to give Laila, his first love, a memory that will be remembered for the rest of their lives, was nothing short of perfection. I felt every emotion, every nervous moment that a 16 year old would experience when he thinks this could be the last time he sees his girl. In addition, that brotherly love between Jon and Will is ever present even while they are temporarily apart, and thoughts of things his brother told him, help guide Will when things don't go the way he wants.
The use of music as Will's escape, the thing he can use to soothe his brain when he needs to tune out a bit from life around him, was ideal. I loved that he enjoyed the classics and truly appreciated music for more than just it's melodies. Will is a smart young man and his natural ability, his flair for music might just be his true calling.
From the first words until the last, we watch Will morph from an infatuated teen, into a more centered young man with a future that will hopefully take him in a new direction. I have great expectations for this character and know that with both his brother's guidance and the imagination of the author, anything can happen. And I will wait patiently to go along for the ride.
This is a wonderfully written novella that will make true Lori Otto fans extremely happy and new ones want to discover more of her work. I was thrilled that familiar characters whom I adore made a few appearances and loved being introduced to newer key players in Will's life that I am hopeful I will meet again and soon.
Lori Otto excels at writing wonderfully amazing male characters. I don't know how she does it, but damn. Will Rosser quickly stole my heart.
"I am tortured and tormented and torn is what I am. And fucking turned on."
While reading the Choisie series, I thought Will might grow up to be like his older brother Jon, but after reading Crossroads, I can see he is going to be a completely different person. And I mean that in the best way. He's got issues, and he's also an artistic genius, but in a different way than Jon.
My only complaint about this novella is that it was way too short. I need more Will in my life. STAT. I can't wait to see him grow up in the next book and where life will take him. I can tell it's going to be a hell of a ride. Bring it on, Lori!
"Thank you, sir. You've just made me forget that I was having the worst fucking day of my life an hour ago."
Oh I just LOVE this Novella by Lori Otto... As usual, Lori's writing is impeccable... Pulling you right into the story & planting you there so that you don't want it to end. I first got to know Will Rosser through his brother, Jon's eyes in the Choisie Series. We get to see Will sort of grow up from a pre teen into a teenager. Poor kid hasn't had the best relationship with his mother or his father, but thanks to Jon's influence, he has turned out pretty good. In Crossroads, we get to really meet Will and see how at 16, some of things that have happened to him really shape who is going to be in the coming years... This story has drama, has laughter and maybe even a few tears. Now I just need more of Will's story as I have loved getting to know him in Crossroads. I can't wait to see what Lori writes next!!!
It should come to no surprise that I'm a really big fan of Lori's writing. So when I found out that she was writing something about Will (Jon's little brother) I was beyond excited. Well Lori did not disappoint even though it was a novella you still get to feel so much and learn so much about Will. I can't wait to see what she has next for him and how he will continue to develop.
Loved getting a glimpse into the life of Will. I hope there will be more stories focusing on Jon's family so we, as readers and fans, can understand where he came from and how his family will turn out.
I got the chance to read an early copy of Crossroads and I was beyond excited to do so. This novella was everything I thought it would be and more. I mean, with Lori you ALWAYS get more than you hope for. She's good like that!
I have to say I adoreeeed this book, even if it was way too short, I loved every single page. I fell in love with Will when I got to know him in Dear Jon. He was a kid, yes, but he was like no other. Well, maybe a bit like Jon, and you know how much I love Jon. Ok, back to Will. While I was reading Dear Jon, I kept thinking, this kid knows, and what he doesn't know, he does everything to figure it out. He's a science boy. Everything has to have an explanation. He was a little boy then, but he's a sixteen year old boy now. I've always wanted a book for Will. He may be one of my favorite characters so I was well beyond excited when Lori announced this novella.
So, Crossroads tells the story of Will, who's now a teenager, a teenager whose heart has been wronged way too many times to count, and now those things are shaping him to be skeptical towards the world. When he left Utah to go back to NY with his mom and brothers, he was leaving behind a big part of his life, and his heart. He'd met Laila, a sweet and good girl, with whom he had been going out for a year. He loved her. She loved him. They needed to say goodbye to her the proper way, so he went back to Utah for a weekend. Everything he'd hope to happened did, and then, everything went down the hole.
There are some things I love about a character and a story, and Lori seems to know them all by heart. I loved that I had a glimpse of a different side of Will, a vulnerable side. It was short, but I saw it, and confirmed what I've always known. His feelings run deep. Too deep for a sixteen year old boy. But again, too many people have let them down. And I wish I could fix that for him. He's such a good guy, and he has the potential of being big, of getting far. And I know he will. I just can't wait for him to share all that with someone who appreciates him. He reminds me now of Nate. (Yes, I always come back to Nate).
The story was perfect, even though it was short. It left me wanting, needing, hoping for more, and I just can't wait. Lori exceeds at writing. She describes situations and feelings in a way that gets you thinking and feeling and living everything. If that's not an AMAZING author, I don't know what is. I read somewhere today that she doesn't write words, she writes emotions, and I couldn't agree more.
Make sure to add Crossroads to your TBR and get it AS SOON AS IT COMES OUT. Okay? Perfect.
During a sleepless night of tossing and turning for hours, I grabbed my ipad and read the novella Crossroads by Lori L. Otto from start to finish. I had no idea what to expect with this book except that Lori wrote it and I absolutely love everything she writes. Crossroads does not disappoint.
It amazes me what Lori can do with characters. Crossroads is a post Choisie series story. Choisie was Livvy Holland and Jon Scott's relationship and through the series we got to know Will, the younger half brother of Jon. In Crossroads, we are reading about a 16 year old Will as he travels back to Utah for the weekend to see his girlfriend Laila for probably the last time. He loves her, but they both realize that the distance between New York and Utah is just too great for them to make it work.
Will Rosser is so different from his brother Jon Scott. He has been dealt a pretty shitty hand in life. As a result, he harbors a great deal of resentment toward his mother, and for good reason. As he heads to stay with his Aunt out west, he has an image of the perfect weekend embedded in his mind. Things can change pretty fast for a young man in love.
While I found him a bit prickly, his personality suited him perfectly considering his circumstances. I believe Lori has set him up beautifully to learn some very valuable life lessons as she progresses with the series. Will has gifts and talents he is just starting to explore, but will he use them for good or will the be self serving? We'll just have to wait and see what happens next.
We met Will in Choisie Series and he was genuinely a good young boy. I loved his conversations with Jon so it's nice to find out more about him. He is definitely different than the previous lead males Lori introduced is to but their link is that they are all very honest about their feelings. This is a great start and I would to love to keep reading to find out what happens with them.
I can not get enough of Lori Otto. Her writing is so fluid and so intelligent. Her characters have depth and emotion. I can't say enough. This coming of age story was sweet and sad and real. I just loved it. If this is the first piece of Lori's that you've read, do yourself a favor and go read everything else she's written.
So we meet Will Roser as the older of Jon Scott’s two half-brothers, in the Choisie Series. And for me Will is one of my favorites secondary characters of Lori's series. But I really fell in love with Will in book 3 of the Choisie Series; Dear Jon, there, he shows a lot of maturity for his age and even gave good advices to Jon. So when Lori surprise us with this novel I was more than thrilled because I was nagging to see if there was any chances for Will to have his own book and even better because apparently he'll get his own series...yay!!!
So is very refreshing getting know more about Will now as a teenager boy with dreams and goals to achieve. Getting inside his head and his life. I can't wait to know more about Will and his series, I see a bright future for him. This is a MUST READ, specially for Lori's fans because as always she never disappoints because SHE. IS. BRILLIANT. Thank you Lori for another great read!
If you haven't read the Choise series, I recommend reading it first because we meet Will in those books as Jon's half-brother. It's not a must but I feel it's important to get to know Will, Jon, and their relationship before starting this novella. Poor Will has been practically raised by Jon because of their alcoholic and deadbeat mother.
Will is going back to Utah to say goodbye to his first love Laila because he's moved to New York and knows their relationship won't work. I knew going into this that it would be heartbreaking, but I definitely was surprised at how much. This novella is sweet, touching, but my heart broke for Will.
As with Lori's writing, it's always superb and so well written. I didn't think I could fall for anyone else, because Jon is so amazing, but I do believe Will is going to be one to remember as well as we go into this series. I'm definitely ready for more Will and see what's in store for him. I just know it's going to be good!
Crossroads is a sweet, tender and heartbreaking novella. If you haven't read Lori's Choisie Series you should before reading Crossroads, trust me you will love them! Will Rosser has been dealt a pretty crappy hand in life. And he has some pretty harsh feelings towards his mother. In Crossroads, Will is getting to go visit his girlfriend in Utah one last time. They both decide long distance isn't for them and to have one last weekend together before calling it quits. As he learns love sometimes hurts and he will have to learn some things the hard way because Jon can't be there to shield him from everything. I hope that we are able to read more about Will and his wonderful talents for music. Lori developed him beautifully and will enjoy "watching" him grow into a wonderful young man.

OH sweet lord.....I love teenage heartbroken Will and just need to mend his shattered heart!!! Crossroads is a novella about Will Rosser as a teenager experiencing first love followed way to quickly with first heartbreak. And when you add this type of hurt with the pain he's endured through growing up with an alcoholic mother (currently recovering alcoholic) and then recently seeing his older brother being hurt by the betraying actions of his longtime girlfriend....you just know that Will is going to harden his heart and close himself off to love with walls that will forever be hard to break down. I loved this novella and am sooooo looking forward to more of Will.....he's already won my heart and just know his book Love Will is going to be another to add to my most favorites!!!
Another AMAZING read! God I just love Lori's books & writing so much. I wish I was graceful with words and was able to do her books justice by writing some lengthy awesome review but I stink with words. So what I will say is I love Will's story. My only complaint is that this is only a novella and not a whole book! I wish all her books were 800 pages! Can't wait for the next story!! Love you Lori!
Another great book from Lori (although way too short)!! Very much enjoyed learning more about Will and this book left me wanting more. While this is the start of a new series (I think), it was nice to have the background from Lori's other books (Emi Lost & Found & Choisie Series). Lori's writing pulls you in from the very start and makes it difficult to put down her books! Her characters are genuine and she leaves you wanting more!!
Wow! I need more! This book has me craving a story about Will as an adult. I really want to see how his thoughts about women affect his actions as he moves forward as a musician. Give me more Lori Otto.
What a sweet and sad coming of age story to get caught up with Will Rosser and possibly a little glimpse of how his past will effect his future. Keep writing Lori Otto, I'll read anything you write spinning off from Emi Lost and Found.
Loves this novella about Will and look forward to reading the next book spin off series Love Like We Do to see what path he takes in life. You can't never go wrong with Lori Otto. One of my favorite story tellers.
Lori Otto does it again! Crossroads is a novella that spins off from the Choisie series. Beautifully written! I look forward to reading MORE about Will Rosser!
I normally wouldn’t read a coming of age type story knowingly, however, this was suggested and the reviews are good, so I decided to give it a chance. I enjoyed it very much. This book is very well written. The storyline is interesting. Even though it’s a little young for my taste, I will admit that now I want to read more. I am very curious to see the right girl or woman come along to change Will’s opinion because he has had some very poor examples and doesn’t think there is such a thing as a good woman. This is the first thing that I have written by this author but I am happy to have given this book a chance and I will likely read more.
This novella is what appears to be a sampling of a future spin-off of one of my favorite series by an author I adore. It's short and sweet but true to Lori's writing style. Cross Roads is a tale about Will Rosser, a character we first met in Lori's Choisie series. He is a boy on the brink of adulthood when life hands him a tough lesson. Will is forced to deal with the fallout and in doing so, discovers some interesting things about himself. It was nice to catch-up with Will and I am most definitely anxious for more.
A short enjoyable novella about the struggles a young boy has to overcome as he faces betrayal, yet finds his passion.
Will hasn’t had the best life at home and plans on making some changes as he flies to visit his aunt and see Laila, his first love. Spending a great weekend with her is on the agenda, but things don’t turn out exactly like he planned.
This was a well written story with great characters. It is a tie-in to the Choisie series which should have been read before and I didn’t… guess we know what I’ll be doing now :-)
Don't know why I waited as long as I did to read Will's initial story. I'm so glad I am getting to know him so much more. Will is so optimistic, as optimistic as one can be given how his life has been up till now and Laila just crushes that. Turns his little heart cold. I can't wait for what's next for Will. I can't wait to continue his journey. I love the Scott/Rosser brothers so much and this book just felt like I was seeing my extended family again.
Lori Otto is so amazingly talented. I love reading her words. This series from the very beginning, like Emi beginning, has been breathtaking.
I've loved every book.
Highly recommend this series. Even though you don't have to start at the beginning of this series to enjoy Lori Otto- you will just fall in love that much more.
