The story follows Dr. Kade Ross and his so-called "nemesis" Althea Dawson, whose first meeting happens when she spots Jake, Kade’s son, being bullied in the alley beside her flower shop. She intervenes, helps Jake clean up in her store, and calls his father. In her mind, she makes all sorts of assumptions about Kade without truly knowing him. In reality, Kade is a devoted father, protecting Jake from the painful truth that five years earlier, Jake’s mother told Kade she didn’t want to be his wife or Jake’s mother, left, and started a new family with another husband and two daughters. Kade carries the weight of being seen as the bad guy to spare his son from rejection. Meanwhile, their parents have grown close, so everyone tries to get along for their parents’ sake. Althea often assumes the worst about people, and her thoughts about Kade’s mother couldn’t have been further from the truth—she wasn’t a gold digger but simply wanted companionship. The story is full of and emotional depth, with tensions between Jake and Kade, as well as between Kade and Althea. It’s a heartfelt read that makes you reflect on life—definitely a good one.
My first book from this author. Not bad. The character developement is good, the plot engrossing. I like that the books arent dragged out. Things I noticed were more editing than anything. Word errors, and scenes changed rapidly and there wasn't smooth transition of anything to signal to the reader...ok, they were talking at the house...literally next sentence, no they're at the end of the day at the hospital. Beyond that, the author needs more finess and a better editor. I do like the characters. They have depth and thr story-plot reel you in solidly.
I didn't enjoy this book as much as the 1st book in the series. Althea was annoying trying to keep her Dad from being happy with a woman. And Made never told the truth to his son about his Mom. Why didn't he confront the Mom with the new perfect family. She got off easy while her son Jake suffered.
It’s the second book in the series and it didn’t disappoint. The characters were brilliant and the story line was amazing and heartbreaking. Guilt is very real
