I do not know my name.

I do not know how I ended up in a world of broken continents and broken souls.

What I do know is how to survive.
How to fight.
How to kill monsters with a precision that borders on magic.

My memories are gone, stripped down to ash, but my body remembers things my mind cannot. Training. Instinct. Violence refined into something lethal and elegant. And beneath it all, a relentless drive to uncover the truth of who I was.

One man stands in my way.

Veyyr.

His magic is unlike anything I’ve ever encountered, and the pull between us is undeniable. He knows me. Knows my past. Knows the name I no longer remember.

And he refuses to tell me.

Bound to his world and his secrets, I follow him into the wilds of a fractured land. A journey I have no reason to take. No stakes in.

Except this.

The deeper we go, the clearer it becomes that survival is no longer enough. The path forward runs through me. Through what I’ve forgotten and must remember.

And if I don’t reclaim the truth of who I am…
This broken world may claim us both.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, I was born into a family of Star Wars nuts. I have a lot of siblings (somewhere I lost count but I think there was more than could be numbered on one hand) and being one of the young padawans I was subjected to Star Wars marathons, on a regular basis. If you've read any of my books you'll see there is often a reference to said movies as a small homage to my upbringing. May the force be with you and all that jazz.

I started writing when I realized I didn't want to grow up not believing in magic, or not believing in creatures everyone else said didn't exist. That being said, I have never seen a fairy, unicorn or dragon. I had a neighbour who swore they fed the leprechauns in their garden, but I never caught the little buggers no matter how long I lay in wait. (And consequently had to help the neighbours plant new flowers to replace those I killed waiting for the leprechauns to show their faces.)

Along the way, I found my husband who is the rock that keeps me from floating away into my dreams, and we have a little boy who is the centre of our world. Living on a farm keeps us busy (as if the writing wasn't enough) and I have more than my share of stories about wrestling with cows, helping birth calves and ending up in the creek during the process, falling in the mud (we'll call it mud but we all know that on a farm, mud is rarely mud) and chasing escaped livestock in the hopes the four legged convicts don't make it to the highway.

I've taken up archery, and the goal is to move into horseback archery in time (you know, when I can hit the target on a consistent basis) and when no one is looking, I love to bake (this doesn't happen often as it's hard to keep the sweet treats in stock with two boys in the house.)

As to what's coming next for me? More stories (since those never stop inside my head, I might as well share them with all of you!) and more adventures. Pretty much, when the fancy strikes, I'll jump on it. Leap before you look I'm sure that motto was created for me.

Or was that . . . think big and dream bigger, ready, set, pull the trigger . . . yeah. That one is a good one too. But only if you have a gun. And are hunting elephants. Which is not cool because of so many reasons. Let's stick with the first one with an addendum.

Leap before you look and let your dreams carry you on their wings. And that, my friends, is me in a nutshell.

Amnesia is one of my favourite trope, add in to it a kickass and powerful heroine, top tier found family, dangerous dystopian world and an enigmatic and broody hero- you have a winner!

I was hooked from page 1 and I enjoy it a lot.
Mallory was such a cool heroine. She had kindness and empathy but is also dangerous and powerful. I loved her resilience.
Even after finishing book 1, Veyyer is still a mystery. He’s cunning but grumpy and so very mysterious. Some of his actions raised my BP but then he will turn around and will do something thoughtful and protect Mallory. I can’t wait to see where the story goes especially with the surprise introduction of Zane.
I especially loved the animals companions in this book. It also had a dash of greek mythology which was incorporated well. Loved Stheno. Harrison, Rana, Lucky, sorrow, Thren and Laz were also amazing.

It also had some quests and challenges which made the book more interesting. That ending was unexpected and left so many questions unanswered. Can’t wait to read book 2.

-Post apocalyptic Urban Romance.
-Amnesia.
-Found Family & animal companions.
-Power couple that hate each other.
-Reluctant chosen one.

'The weed had pushed through a crack in the broken path like it had been born of spite, its feathery soft petals trembling in the still air. “Life hasn’t given up yet.” I said....
The flower shouldn’t be here. Against all odds, it was surviving. Like me.' (Ch 9)

Post-Apocalyptic Urban Fantasy Romance | Amnesia | Fierce Heroine | Reluctant Chosen One | Steamy Slow Burn | Found Family

Mallory is instinctual, an empathetic defender, compassionate, and a warrior. Though she lost her memory, she didn’t lose her rediscovered-on-the-fly skillsets, nor her wit and sass. It's a journey to gather and put together all the pieces and to unravel the mystery of all that she lost.

'You can’t save them all. This world doesn’t allow for it. Save who you can and be content with that.' (Ch 11)

And the creatures, omgosh! Probably horrific and terrifying to encounter! Though onery Sorrow and cheeky Lucky were exceptions. This world is dangerous, yet sprinkled with the magical, majestic, and mysterious... and the quirky.

'Because while I didn’t know for sure that he was my enemy, he was a shadow from my past that I knew in my gut I shouldn’t trust.' (Ch 10)

The tension between Mal and the Veyyr was volatile and intense at times. All the while, it keeps you in suspense and drags you along as if dangling a treat in front of your nose, but never letting you get close enough to bite it. What do you know, Veyyr?!!! and why all the secrecy?!

'I did not know who I had been. But I knew this— this heat, this pull, this terrifying need to lean into something solid.' (Ch 13)

Epic journey and quest. And an ending that prompted more questions than answers, and a perhaps another twist!

'She didn’t scream, she didn’t beg for help. Because in this world… no one was coming to save you.' (Ch 11)

"Riftborn" by Shannon Mayer is a total knockout! From the very first page, I was hooked by the mysterious main character who wakes up with amnesia in a shattered world. Her skills are off the charts, and the action is non-stop as she battles monsters and tries to piece together her past.

The relationship between her and Veyyr is so intense! The author does an amazing job of building the tension and making you want to scream at Veyyr to just tell her the truth already! The world-building is fantastic, too – you can really picture this broken land and feel the desperation of the people living there.

What really sets this book apart is the main character's internal struggle. She's not just fighting external enemies; she's battling her own lost memories and trying to figure out who she really is. If you're looking for a thrilling, action-packed fantasy with a strong female lead and a touch of romance, "Riftborn" is a must-read!

I loved the first half, but the second half of the story was a little too choppy with too many left turns. I felt like the MCs had plenty of page time together, but when it came to their depth of their relationship, it was nothing and then all of a sudden everything. It felt like there wasn’t much of a build up of “will they or won’t they”. Overall, I really enjoyed Mallory’s character! I am usually not an amnesia trope fan, but I enjoyed the cadence of how her memory came back. She’s a badass that I’d be happy to have on my team!

Excellent read!

Riftborn is jam-packed with monsters, witches and all manner of other dangerous critters. There’s also a huge mystery surrounding the FMC regarding her identity, we’ll call her Mallory for now.

Mallory evidently has a magnetic field surrounding her that attracts trouble in many situations and even though she wants to do the right things, she gets sidetracked by all the bad flowing towards her. I loved every second of it because, seeing how she gets out of most binds is pretty amazing. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Please note that there is one steamy scene, lots of violence, major betrayal and one heck of a cliffhanger!

Such a fast paced and fun story with tons of character. I especially loved the brilliantly written lore, character development, and plot. I had such a fun time reading Mallory's story. I usually don't like amnesia but this one is well done, as it starts with amnesia and she works to unravel the reasons for it and who she is. I loved the extra characters and it felt playful and light while being a serious plot. There was a good amount of yearning and tension but I didn't believe the love interest pieces. I never got the depth from MMC. It felt like it was lacking something. But despite that, overall it was just a lot of fun to read. The twists and unknown kept me in the story.

Since it's an arc I'm not sure the level of editing to follow, but it did have distracting errors that made it difficult to read.

Mallory wakes up with no memories, but she does know how to survive. She's a strong FMC, a fighter, sassy, and yet compassionate. Mallory is one of those characters who will put others before herself.

Veyyer is cunning, arrogant, grumpy, mysterious, and powerful. He clearly knows Mallory from her past. There is tension, banter, and at times, a lack of trust.

We don't know any details from the past, so we are trying to figure it out alongside Mallory. Because of this, I couldn't stop reading, wanting to learn more. There are magical creatures, monsters, witches, animal companions, and of course, one of my favorites: found family.

I really enjoyed the introduction of Zane; I immediately fell in love with his character. There is definitely a story from their past, and I can't wait to find out.

The ending left me with so many unanswered questions. I can't wait until book two so I can get some more answers!

The MMC ruined this book for me. He was not likable in any way. Just a jerk that kept secrets from someone he “cared” about. When the fmc insinuated she loved him I was shook. Loved what? At this point there had been no heart felt talks, no moments of deep understanding, just attraction to each other. That’s not love. I read one review that said he saved her. Did I miss that scene? He was maybe there when she saved herself and he also saved himself but he didn’t save her from what I read. And if someone claimed to love me but kept secrets and put me in danger for his own sake… that’s not the kind of love I want. I was not shocked by the ending in the slightest. Also a key point I hated in this book was that all the women hated our fmc for no reason. (The gorgon sisters excluded) like why were all the witches attacking her relentlessly without so much as a conversation but not the mmc? I know I’m pointing out everything I didn’t like and there were some good moments and I didn’t DNF so that’s telling for me but still… the parts I didn’t like I really didn’t like. The only way I read the next in the series is if it’s a new mmc

Loved the World, Still Waiting for the Answers!

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐✨ (3.5/5 Stars)

Riftborn promises a post-apocalyptic urban fantasy romance with a chosen one, reluctant hero, found family and steamy slow burn. It hits the ground running with a premise that grabbed my attention before I read the first page: a high stakes "chosen one" narrative featuring a strong FMC with amnesia. Sign. Me. Up. Mallory is a fantastic protagonist. She is fierce and capable in a fight, but she could also be soft, vulnerable and silly too making her feel real. I love a good amnesia trope and the he knows her but she doesn’t know him thing complete with a magical bond and a side of betrayal is gold. Mallory takes us on quite the adventure however, despite the action and the group of friends Mallory picks up along the way, I found myself still waiting for the answers to her past by the time I closed the book. The amnesia plot is the most compelling plot point of the story, but it felt like we made very little actual progress on that front.

The MMC, Veyyr, left me feeling a bit conflicted. He is mysterious and there is no denying his power as a Storm Lord, which is pretty cool in my book, but his personality often leaned too far into being arrogant and callous for my taste. Because we only see him through Mallory’s perspective, it was hard to move past that "enemy" lens, even when he showed flashes of a gentler side. I can’t help but think a dual POV would have helped me understand what makes him tick and made him more likable. The romance itself is the slowest of slow burns, and unfortunately, it didn't quite sizzle for me. The first hot and heavy moment felt like it came out of nowhere, didn’t make a lot of sense and totally gave me whiplash. I like the idea of this romance, but I never fully bought into their chemistry, even as they transitioned from enemies to friends to more. I mean, heck, Veyyr spent a good amount of time completely ignoring Mal!

What truly shines in this book, however, is the world-building and the exceptional secondary cast. The dystopian landscape, filled with old school monsters, new beasties coming out of the rift and misunderstood creatures like Thren, is vivid and immersive. I am also officially intrigued by the mystery of the Necro King. The found family vibes are top tier; I’d take Lucky as a bestie any day, and characters like the precocious and adorable Rana and the sweet Harrison add so much heart. On the flip side, Isla is a character you’ll love to hate, and Thorn is quite memorable too. Even Sorrow the bird is a standout character, though I’ll admit his name tripped me up a few times when I mistook it for a literal description of an emotion!

While there were some editing errors and the conclusion felt more like a non-ending than a true cliffhanger, the foundation here is strong. The romance execution and the lack of plot resolution kept this from being a favorite read for me, but the world-building and the cast have left me genuinely curious about what happens next. It’s an intriguing start to a series with a lot of story left to tell, and I’ll likely be back for the sequel just to finally get the answers Mallory (and I) are looking for.

From the first pages of Riftborn, readers will be thrust into an action packed, post-apocalyptic story that will grip you. Riftborn is the newest release from Shannon Mayer and introduces us to Mallory, a strong FMC without a memory. Mallory finds allies on her journey and gets the feeling that one of them, Veyyr, might know more about her than he is letting on.

This story was incredibly action-packed. I felt like there was never a dull moment and the world-building really drew me in. From magic systems through to a slew of ancient mythological beasties and some new ones, this book has it all. For the first book in a series, it sets up the story well and has left me wanting more….I am highly anticipating the second book.

While Mallory does have amnesia, I loved that the story didn’t quickly resolve her lost past. There is still a lot to learn about Mallory as the series progresses. Shannon Mayer writes the best found family stories and this one was on point. I enjoyed Mallory’s interactions with Harrison, Rana and Lucky. It brought a lot of comfort in such a treacherous world.

Thank you to Shannon Mayer for gifting me with an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

Hello, people!
First of all, let me mention that this book is the first book in the Of Sorrows and Blades series.
The books that remain engraved in my heart are those that have a lot of tension and suspense and those that are read breathlessly, because they captivate me with the torrential words of each author and the strong plot. Here, then, we have a combination of these.
The dystopian environment and the post apocalyptic world full of fantasy creatures are super wow.
Readers walk and walk along with the main heroine, Mallory, in order to learn along with this story, her past.
The author's writing is stormy, cinematic, shocking, captivating and so, so subversive.
I hope the sequel comes out soon because I can't wait for the second part of the series. If you're looking for something fast-paced, heart-pounding, and adrenaline-pumping, then this book is for you!

Many thanks to the author and Crowns and Chaos PR for the eARC!

This is my honest review!

This story drops you into a fractured world where Mallory wakes with no name, no memories, and an instinct for survival that feels almost supernatural. Her voice is sharp and grounded, and watching her navigate a landscape full of monsters and broken magic makes the mystery around her past even more compelling.

Veyyr adds another layer with his strange power and his quiet certainty about who she used to be. The tension between them builds through every scene, especially as he holds answers she isn’t ready to hear. You never really knew what he was going to say or do.

It’s a phenomenal start to a new series, full of grit, found family, and a heroine who refuses to break. The twist at the end was unexpected and it perfectly set up the next book in a way that left me wanting more. I have never read a Shannon Mayer book that I haven’t loved, and this one was no exception.

Riftborn by Shannon Mayer
Of Sorrows and Blades book 1

Post apocalyptic urban fantasy
Found family, reluctant hero, magical memory loss, slow burn, dangerous quest, animal companion

Mallory wakes up with no memories. No past, but she does know how to fight. And she has a ring on her finger. She sets out to find the truth of her past and ends up running into someone who knew her. But he won't help her. She refuses to take no for an answer.

This was a super adventurous and fun read! I ate this up and especially enjoyed the found family! And Sorrow and Rana!! Love them! The mysterious Veyyr had me intrigued not knowing what their history was and we learned about Mallory's past as she did. And the ending!! Ahhh I need book 2!!

Where do I begin… this book brought me out of a reading slump! Such a brilliant adventure written by Shannon Mayer. I mean, the surprises twists and turns were at every corner. Once again she masterfully combines fantasy, female empowerment, humor, romance and found family elements all in one story. While Mallory has no memory of her past, each of the characters you meet is truly unforgettable. Each character truly has their own personality and their own purpose throughout Mallorys journey. I loved Mallorys passion for defending others, her resilience and her ability to compartmentalize her emotions. The journey she’s on is truly an incredible one and a thrilling rollercoaster. Riftborn is the first installment in author Shannon Mayer's Of Shadows and Blades series. This story is a high-octane, memory-wiped thrill ride that blends gritty post-apocalyptic survival with classic urban fantasy flair, laced with romance and found family. The story opens with our protagonist, Mallory, clawing her way out of a massive rift in the earth—literally born from the cataclysm that shattered the world.

If you like a post apocalypse urban fantasy with a strong female lead, then definitely add this book to your list.

It starts off with our FMC who has amnesia and very quickly becomes an action packed adventure with quirky side characters, magical mythical creatures, and quests within quests. The entire book gives you enough answers to be satisfied while still keeping you waiting for the next book.

Very entertaining and will definitely be reading the next.

I absolutely loved reading Riftborn, it grabbed me from page one! Shannon Mayer builds such an immersive post‑apocalyptic world with intriguing mysteries, unique creatures, and nonstop action. It left me with ALL the questions and totally itching for another book!

Storytime... I've been feral for this book since reading the first chapter in Shannon's newsletter several months ago. She sent subscribers a total of 11 unedited chapters, one every week or so, and I'm not ashamed to say that I gobbled it up and pleaded for more. (I guess I'm ungrateful that way, but Shannon, as well as her amazing PA, Erica, should know by now how greedy I am for anything she writes.)

Riftborn is the perfect post-apocalyptic, urban fantasy! Full of action and rich world building, it captivated me from the very start.

After pulling herself from a large rift in the earth, Mallory finds herself in a desolate place with no memory of her past. Determined to discover who she is, she pushes forward, not letting anyone or beast best her. Despite the negative things she hears about herself, she refuses to give up. With rough edges and a tough exterior, she portrays strength and independence to those around her. However, that toughness hides a softness for those she’s come to care about, along with a need to protect them, something that has come to the forefront and would surprise many who knew her before.

Veyyr is broody, frustrating, and at times unlikable. He’s also fiercely loyal, protective of those he cares for, and will stop at nothing to fulfill his quest, which Mallory has become an integral part of. He’s such an interesting mix of conflicting personality traits that you’ll find yourself wanting to dig into the heart of him, only to discover that he’s a complicated puzzle, wrapped in a conundrum, all tied up with a paradox. (Close your eyes and imagine that.) I find myself intrigued and frustrated by him. He’s a multifaceted character that you will distrust, hate, swoon over, and love.

Riftborn follows Mallory and Veyyr's journey through a desolate post-apocalyptic world fraught with danger, and to survive, they must learn to trust each other; otherwise, their lives are forfeit.

I ate these two up! At times, they're so different, I questioned how they would work, then I'd glimpse how perfectly they fit together, like two sides of the same coin.

The last quarter of the book kept me on the edge of my seat, gasping, praying, and so full of questions. It flipped everything upside down, leaving me conflicted, anxious, and questioning everything. Before posting this review, I reread all my notes and highlights, including thoroughly searching keywords, because I was determined to find clues to things I missed and hoping to find possible foreshadowing of what was to come.

I. Am. Unwell.

Shannon Mayer hit a grand slam with this one, and it's going to feel like a living beast is raging through my brain until the next one releases.

Now, I must find a therapist to help me with my trauma, a clairvoyant to tell me how this series ends, and a book full of banter, rainbows, sunshine, and a happily ever after to make me laugh and smile, not necessarily in that order.

Favorite Lines & Quotes:

"Hope is like that weed, it’s not always pretty, but it doesn’t give up, no matter the odds.”

“Listen, lady. You can promise to ride the fuck out of him, and give him children and a crown, until you’re hoarse, but I’m who he’s fighting to get to. I’m the one he knows will stand beside him while the world burns around us. I’m the one he can give his back to and know I’ll keep it safe.”

“It is something else I think, something more binding than your magic, or my scars on your body. Something that has been building since before I can remember. I will not deny I don’t understand it either. But it is mine, and whatever it is, it is ours.”

I was obsessed with this from page one. Completely. Utterly. Hooked. 😭🔥

This story opened with a woman who didn’t even know her own name. She woke in a world of broken continents and broken souls, stripped of her memories—but not her instincts. She didn’t remember who she was… but she remembered how to fight. How to survive. How to kill monsters with lethal precision. And that contrast? It gripped me immediately. ⚔️🌍

Mallory was fierce in a way that felt instinctual, not forced. She was empathetic. Compassionate. A defender at her core. Even without her memories, her morality stayed intact—and that said everything about who she had been. Watching her rediscover herself on the fly was emotional and empowering all at once. 🖤✨

Her body remembered training. Violence refined into elegance. Magic that felt like muscle memory. But her mind? Ash. Gone. And beneath it all was that relentless need to uncover the truth.

And then there was Veyyr. 😤🔥

The tension between Mal and Veyyr was volatile, intense, and deliciously frustrating. He knew her. Knew her name. Knew her past. And refused to tell her. The pull between them simmered in every interaction—heat, distrust, longing, suspicion—all tangled together. It felt like being dragged behind a secret you weren’t allowed to see. And I felt that frustration right alongside her.

Tell her the truth already!!! 😭

Their journey across the fractured wilds raised the stakes beautifully. What started as survival slowly shifted into something bigger. The deeper they went, the clearer it became—this wasn’t just about staying alive. The path forward ran through her. Through what she had forgotten. Through what she might be capable of becoming.

The world-building was gritty and immersive. Dangerous. Brutal. But also sprinkled with the magical, majestic, and deeply mysterious. The creatures? Absolutely horrifying. The kind you pray you never meet in a dark alley of a shattered world. 😳

(Though Sorrow and Lucky were exceptions, and I adored them.)

The found family elements softened the sharp edges of the apocalypse. Those bonds felt earned. Necessary. Human. 🫶

What truly set this apart for me was the internal battle. Mallory wasn’t just fighting monsters. She was fighting herself—her missing memories, the shadow of who she might have been, and the terrifying possibility that reclaiming her truth could either save the world… or destroy it.

And that ending?! 😱
More questions than answers. Another twist lurking in the shadows. I immediately need book two.

If you love stories where:

✨ Amnesia hides dangerous truths
🔥 Steamy slow-burn tension that hurts so good
⚔️ A fierce, instinct-driven heroine
🌍 Post-apocalyptic fantasy landscapes
🖤 Reluctant chosen one energy
👑 “He knows more than he’s saying” hero
👯 Found family in a brutal world
👹 Terrifying monsters + magical creatures

…this is absolutely for you.

This was intense. Emotional. Action-packed. And layered with mystery and longing. I devoured it.

Thank you to Shannon Mayer for the ARC opportunity—it was such an honor to step into this shattered, dangerous, unforgettable world. 💫

I probably say this with every single book I’ve reviewed of Shannon’s, but it’s worth repeating - I absolutely love her style of storytelling. It’s simultaneously unique, engaging, and always so funny. Plus, the added bonus of badass FMCs! Riftborn is a post apocalyptic romance, with an FMC who cannot remember her past, and collects found family members along her journey. I am so intrigued to see where this story goes because I can honestly say I have no clue what could be coming next!

*There is one spicy scene in Riftborn. I’ve included the chapter/page at the bottom of this review.*

The beginning of Riftborn starts with our FMC, Mallory, waking up in a Rift and having zero memory of how she got there, or who she even is. With the help of a group of strangers, they pull her out of the Rift. From that point on, trouble seems to find her. As much as she likes the group of people who’ve found her, she’s quickly forced to leave them.

The next person she stumbles upon is someone she’s sure she knows from her past. She starts to hear a voice guiding her on certain monsters, training, and also feelings on people she may have known. Mallory is sure this new person, Veyyr, is someone who can give her answers about herself and her past but he is more than reluctant to invite her into his crew.

Veyyr quickly realizes that her tracking abilities and training against the world’s monster will help them on their quest, so they set out on the journey to resurrect.. someone.

Lucky & Sorrow were my favorites in this story! Lucky’s t-shirts always made me laugh; I feel like he was the levity Mallory needed. Sorrow and his one-line caws were so unexpectedly funny; plus, I love that he just always had Mallory’s back. The different quests to obtain the spell’s ingredients were both harrowing and fun, because they helped us to learn what Mallory is capable of. It feels like there is still so much to discover about this apocalyptic world and Mallory.

Now let’s talk about Veyyr 🤬 hated him from the very beginning and was hoping against hope that Mallory would not take their relationship past quest buddies. She was so strong & yet continued to allow her thoughts to drift to his attractiveness, etc, when all this man did was lie and deceive her. She was dickmatized before even riding his dick. Hoping he gets yeeted off a cliff in the next book 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thank you Shannon and team for ARC copy!! 🖤

I just finished this book and it has me feeling so many things! I don't typically read a lot of books that take place post apocalypse, so this was a newer adventure for me. I quite enjoyed it though! The world after the apocalypse and the different creatures really had my attention. There were a few that I found strange because they didn't fit with the other post-apocalyptic creatures, but the way they are written didn't take me out of the story. If they did that might have been an issue.

However, the creatures are fascinating and I kind of want a sorrow bird of my own! I also can't wait to find out more about certain creatures that are connected with the main character. Mallory, who is the main character is an awesome FMC. The fact that she has amnesia makes everything more intense. Trusting new people and trying to figure out where you fit while trying to survive definitely hits on another level! The pull that she feels towards certain people also has me with so many questions. I just really like how strong, brave, and uncompromising Mallory is.

Veyyr the MMC (so far) has me all sorts of confused, but not in a bad way. His actions just don't always align with who he seems to be on the inside and that has been a struggle for both Mallory and for me as the reader. The ending definitely threw me for a loop and I can't wait for book two because I need answers now! At this time he's someone that I love to hate, but I'm also very much rooting for.

The found family vibes are also very on point in this book. I love all of the other characters that form the family group. They bring a lot of laughter and just joy into some very intense moments. I also love how the animals are part of this found family for Mallory.

Overall, I am so happy that I received this ARC from Shannon and was pleasantly surprised by the adventure she took me on. The story definitely evoked emotions from me and was a great blend of magic, fantasy, desperation, and grit. Hopefully, the next book will give us some solid answers and a certain someone will get her just desserts!

This book, Wow. I loved it. I read it in one night. Yes I stayed up until three-ish in the morning to finish it and yes, I paid for that the next day, but it was so worth it.
The world building is fantastic! The character development is incredible and you get to watch these characters grow and evolve as the story progresses. I love books where the characters grow and change, I dislike a main character that never grows or changes.
This book is a Post Apocalyptic Urban Fantasy. The book opens on an action scene and the action just keeps going. I hate spoilers so I do not want to tell you much more about the book.
The main protagonist is a strong woman but one that has forgotten her past. She doesn't know why she can fight or where she learned the things she knows.
Veyyr is the man that can give her the answers she needs. He is strong, full of powerful magic, he isn't very friendly and wants nothing to do with our female protagonist. Unfortunately for him he knows about her past and she wants answers.
The world isn't safe and the creatures in it are often deadly to humans. The humor in this book made me laugh, I love a good sassy and snarky main character. This one will have you on the edge of your seat, and it has all of the feels.
The only problem I had was finishing it so late and not being able to talk about it with anyone.
If you love a book full of action, danger, new creatures and maybe some normal creatures and if you have read some other books from this author you might be in for a few surprises.
You really need to grab this one.

Ahh yes this was so much fun!!

The concept of this book was so different!! We’re talking Post-Apocalyptic Urban Fantasy romance where rifts in the world are spitting out all manner of monsters!

Honestly the atmosphere and the writing was so immersive I was on the edge of my seat through the whole book because he does not let up at all! The world building was so thoughtful and interesting!!

Then you have our FMC with the amnesia trope in this world, pure gold!! I loved Mallory, a kickass powerful heroine, who had such kindness and empathy even when she has no idea who she is! Though she lost her memory, she didn't lose her sass, fire, morals or skill set which she uncovers slowly whilst she fights alongside her new found family on a quest she became a part of!

And to be honest I really felt for her journey and internal struggle as she battling her own lost memories trying to figure out who she really is!

Then theirs our mysterious enigmatic MMC veyyr who is still a huge mystery at the end of the book, which I love! The tension between Mal and the Veyyr was volatile, intense and so much fun!! Veyyr is a hugely complex MMC and I am still figuring him out, one second I loved him the next I wanted to punch him, he has so many secrets!

I also especially loved the animals companions in this book, a bird companion… Sorrow!! So freaking cool!

Honestly if you want to read something a little bit different dark twisty and action packed! Shannon Mayer knocked this out the park!
