When She Walked Away

Rate this book

WHEN SHE WALKED AWAY He took her for granted. She took herself back.

For five years, Calista Bellwood has endured her mother-in-law's passive-aggressive matchmaking, watching helplessly as Caroline parades beautiful, accomplished women in front of her husband at every family gathering. But Bexley never sees it—or worse, he refuses to acknowledge it.

By the time they get home, Calista has made her decision. She packs her bags and walks away from the man she loves, knowing she deserves more than being treated like a placeholder in her own marriage.

Now Bexley has to face the devastating he's lost the only woman he's ever loved. And if he wants her back, silence is no longer an option. He'll have to fight—for her, for them, and against the mother who's been undermining his marriage from the start.

Can a man who failed to protect his wife's heart prove he's worthy of holding it again?

A second-chance marriage romance with scorching heat, emotional grovel, and a hard-won HEA.

I like the concept, marriage in trouble… hubby doesn’t rein in his obnoxious mother, and wife has had enough. Simple. The execution is a little anemic, it needs more something.

Very short read but entertaining and gets its point across. Heaven save us from a Mama’s Boy! His mom was completely over the top ridiculous. How his wife lasted five years without melting down is beyond me.

Communication is the key

This was a light but realistic story about problems in a marriage and effective communication. You need to speak your thought but also really learn to listen to your partner.

Marriage is a partnership that means it’s the two of you against the world. Letting anyone into that partnership is a good way to loose the marriage.

This was a story about all that and that even with their HEA, marriage is always a work in progress and it’s hard but the rewards are like nothing you ever saw before.

When She Walked Away was about 26-year-old Calista Bellwood, a graphic designer, and her husband, Bexley Bellwood, a software developer. (Her name was Calista, but he called her Em...this was never explained. The same way his sister was named Renee, yet Calista called her Soph...again, no explanation.)

Trigger Warnings from the Author: Explicit sexual content (multiple detailed sex scenes), Emotional infidelity (not physical), Toxic mother-in-law/family dynamics, marriage conflict and separation, emotional manipulation, strong language, scenes of emotional distress and crying, and confrontational family dynamics.

Tropes: Second Chance romance, marriage in crisis, Dual POV, Grovel (hero grovels HARD), Forced separation, He realizes too late, Grand gesture, Mama's Boy learns his lesson, HEA, Emotional Growth, Communication saves the marriage.

Heat Level: Very Explicit/Scorching

Calista and Bexley had been married for five years, but that never stopped her mother-in-law from parading other women in front of him in hopes he would leave Calista and marry one of the other women. The upcoming holiday was no different than any of the previous ones she had endured. Her husband, Bexley, never stopped his mother's cruel, deliberate actions that always hurt his wife. This time, however, Calista had had enough. When she overheard her mother-in-law tell her father-in-law that their son had married the wrong woman and was "starting to see the cracks", it wouldn't be long before he left her for someone else, she realized that Bexley had also heard his mother's words...and did nothing. So she did the only thing left to do...she moved out. But that only lasted for about two weeks.

This story was...okay. It had the typical angst, drama, and an emotional rollercoaster with all the twists and turns one has come to expect from this type of book. However, the storyline was a bit lackluster. The author stated in her trigger warnings that there were "explicit/scorching" sex scenes (multiple), but it wasn't anything close to what she explained. The same with the emotional cheating warning. I didn't find any of that in this book. Sure, the hubby's mother paraded multiple women in front of him, but that didn't justify calling it emotional cheating just because he was friendly to the women. That calls for a long-term relationship, not just meeting each woman one time and never seeing her again. There really wasn't any strong language either, so that warning was unnecessary. I was starting to think the author's warnings were for a different book, because the only thing that really matched up was the toxic mother-in-law/family dynamics trigger.

The author mentioned emotional growth, and a supposed grovel that was hard. While, yes, there was some emotional growth by the MMC, the grovel wasn't all that HARD...unless the author meant it was hard for him to set boundaries for his mother because she was such a b*tch. (She reminded me of my former MIL, to be honest!)

The story was way too short to fully address every issue that was brought up in it, and the resolutions took place off-page and too quickly. The reader didn't get to experience the growth the author mentioned in the trigger warning, and the MIL didn't stick to the boundaries that had been laid out for her. In the end, the reader was forced to "be happy the FMC was happy", because it looked like perhaps the marriage might not last if the author had kept writing...even though it NEEDED more content. The author dropped the ball badly in this story, so it only earned a two-star rating.

Short

Husband finally pulled his head out of his rush and realized his mom was freaking crazy. She was trying to set him up with women even though he's been married to the heroine for five years. Just crazy. She said awful things and the hero.didn't even stand up for his wife. He did realize it finally, after she left him, and told his mother to go away until she apologizes to his wife. It worked eventually

Calista finally had enough and leaves him for 2 weeks.

Bexley has to decide is being a son or husband more important.

Good Short Story (103 pages)

This is a nice quick read.
Bexley is the son who never stood up to his mother and allowed her to basically bully his wife Calista.
Every time she complained he said she was overreacting or his mother did t mean it like that etc etc…. Basically allowing this for an easy life.
Bexley’s mother brings women to dinners to introduce to her married son in front of Calista and constantly criticises Calista.
On Thanksgiving Calista and Bexley’s sister hear his mother’s awful bullying and saying their marriage is temporary until he finds a more suitable wife.
That is Calista’s breaking point and she walks out and tells Bexley she is done and she leaves him.
Then it really hit Bexley that he has allowed his mother to bully his wife and he can’t live without her.
It’s about him realising his mistakes and standing up for his wife against his toxic mother.

Well written story of 2 people being torn apart by his mother and his lack of action. It hit me because some of this could have been my story. My MIL had 3 'only children' each 10 years apart and each one taught to be totally devoted to only her. Then the sons grew and married and the cold war was on. Fortunately for me, my FIL was super and did not hesitate to rein her in. It took my husband much longer. It totally irked her that no matter what she did, she got no response...none.

I am surprised that the h put up with this for 5 years! And for the MIL to constantly invite other women for him....she would have worn that water.

Toxic MIL + TSTL H = Marriage in trouble

Bexley is a TSTL weak, cowardly H. He let's his mother treat his wife like the help and never sticks up for her. Calista is the sunshine h who loves her husband and tolerates her evil MIL until she just has had enough. H constantly choosing his mother over his wife, oof, gotta say it'd be hard to want to be with a weak man like that. I mean sheesh, yeah not really sure he's worth it. Overheard is one of the tropes I love and this one was good. Short read but really good. This is a newer to me writer and I'm off to see what else I can read by them.

Short and sweet…

This wife had both a MIL and a husband problem. His mother is simply awful. She constantly puts the wife down, and invites single women to every dinner they attend apparently hoping he’ll fall for someone else. This MIL is just disgusting. He’s not a lot better because he tells his wife she’s paranoid and that the MIL doesn’t really mean the things she says.

The wife has finally had it and leaves him. This guy was a coward.

KU read, an okay read with only one or two errors. The writing is fine, and the premise is okay too. Just nothing special so it’s a solid, average 3 stars.

Calista and Bexley

I do love a marriage in crisis story.
Calusta have been disrespected by her mother- in-law for years without her husband's support or protection but when she crosses a line... hard in front if her husband Bexley and he stays silence she have enough and walks away on her marriage.

Editing was awful

Character names were being confused. Renee being call “Soph”. Calista being referred to as “Em”.
The argument between Bex and his mother was incomplete. Words being repeated that were never said.
Just bad editing. Quick story that depicts real life controlling moms and their sons.

Great read.

I would recommend this book for those who are married. For both wife and husband to read alone or together. To spend time to reconnect and just listen to one another take turns reading a chapter. Every marriage had it's ups and downs. This book is what you call knowing your boundaries and understanding each other before walking away.

Good

Good Short read, the Errors that were mentioned in a review seems to have been rectified so the flow is easy to read. I would have liked proper progress for the Mother but seeing as Bexley stayed true with his boundaries and being a super read it was fine.
Some spice, dual pov, Hea

The 'ol MIL. What I liked at the end of the story is how the therapist got both of them honest, not just the husband. Because the wife needed to step up her game and really tell him how she feels instead of getting all huffy when the husband had no clue how much he relegated to his mother.

Boring.

Perhaps more character development is the way to make this interesting, I'm not sure. It was thin on context and not really any drama building. Mama v. consequences didn't flesh out enough for me.

Good story about second chance after the MMC has let his wife down another time. She has enough of her MIL abuses and leaves him.
It’s a good grovel and a good story about the struggles of setting boundaries in order to prioritize your relationship.
Easy and short.

This was good but I felt there could be more—more grovel, more angst from the other women, more insight into why he always picked his mom and never shut down he meddling

Oh mother in laws. They can be great and then they can be Carolyn. Terrible. Be let needed to be slapped. Allowing any to treat his wife that way. Oh heck no. Great book.

As I’m reading books by this AI author it’s just getting worse. Same concepts, just plug into different names.
