A fast paced, plot-driven romantic fantasy where a romance ignites fast and burns through everything that follows.
For decades, Mystics have been executed. Now the King is sparing them. Gisela Valor should be relieved, but mercy has never come without a cost. The Life Stones that sustain the villages of Mystralos have been seized, and the plants she depends on to heal her people are withering. With her own Mystic mark concealed, Gisela learns that silence is no longer safety—it’s surrender. When she joins forces with Thorne Alderose, her childhood adversary and unexpected ally, they set out to uncover the truth behind the King’s decree and awaken a power that is no ordinary magic. It’s alive. Sentient. And it awakens only to those who are willing. As old grudges give way to a pull they can’t resist, they encounter four other Mystics with pasts more entangled than they realize. The land falters, the veil between realms thins, and it becomes clear the King is not the only threat. Once the truth is exposed, there will be no returning to the world Mystralos once was.
Michelle Kirby is the author of Veil of Kings. When she isn’t hallucinating her next story to music, she’s juggling four kids, two dogs, and her husband (who she insists helps with the juggling). She studied psychology at the University of South Florida and now talks about books and writing on Instagram and TikTok. When she’s not reading or gaming, she’s watering her plants and staying in sweatpants as long as possible.
Thank you to Michelle Kirby and BookFunnel for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
✨ “Chosen by the gods, hunted by the crown.”
This story pulled me in fast and didn’t let go. But I couldn’t help wishing it slowed down just enough to let everything fully sink in.

💭 My Reading Experience
Veil of Kings opens with a brutal, high-stakes scene that immediately sets the tone. From the very beginning, the story moves quickly and pulls you into a world where those marked by magic are hunted and executed without mercy.
Told in third person, the narrative gives you a broader view of the world and characters, though I still found myself wanting a deeper emotional connection in key moments.
The pacing is fast, which made this an easy, bingeable read. I kept turning the pages because I genuinely wanted to know what would happen next. The magic system centers around Mystics descended from six gods, each bonded to a primal elemental force. It felt unique and full of potential.
But while it was captivating, I found myself wanting more depth. The world building and political elements felt rushed, and I would have loved more time to fully understand the magic system and the stakes within the world.
The romance also developed quickly. The shift from tension to trust to something more between Gisela and Thorne happened fast, and I needed more yearning and buildup to feel fully invested in their relationship.
One thing I did really appreciate was the communication between them. It was refreshing to see characters actually talk through things instead of relying on miscommunication.
The ending delivers a twist that sets up the next book well, and I’m hopeful the sequel will expand on the world and deepen the emotional impact.

🖤 Characters
Gisela (FMC): Gisela is compassionate, grounded, and driven by doing what is right. Even in a world that tries to define her limits, she carries quiet strength. I really appreciated the foundation her father gave her, teaching her how to defend herself and survive in subtle ways.
That said, her growth felt minimal. She remains consistent throughout, but I didn’t feel a strong evolution, which made some of her later moments feel a bit unearned.
Thorne (MMC): Thorne is layered in a way that slowly reveals itself. While he’s initially harsh, there is always something beneath the surface. Regret, restraint, something unspoken.
His growth stood out the most to me. He actively chooses not to become his father, and that internal conflict made him compelling. The moment he stands up to his father was one of the strongest scenes in the book, and his loyalty and devotion added depth to his character.
─────────────────────────
💖 What Worked For Me
• The unique elemental magic system and concept of mystics bonded to primals • The communication between the main characters, which felt refreshing • Thorne’s character growth and emotional depth
─────────────────────────
⚡ What Didn’t Fully Work For Me
• The world-building felt rushed, leaving me wanting more depth • The romance needed more yearning and slower development • Limited character growth for Gisela
─────────────────────────
🔥 Standout Moments
Favorite dynamic: The shift from tension to reluctant trust between Gisela and Thorne
Scene that lingered: Thorne finally standing up to his father
Quote: “Eyes on me,” he whispered. He waited until her hazy eyes found his. “I need to see the look in them when you realize no one else is ever going to make you feel like this.”

🌙 Final Thoughts
If you love fast-paced romantasy with elemental magic, strong moral choices, and a character-driven MMC, this book is for you.
If you prefer slower world-building, deeper emotional immersion, and a more drawn-out romance, you may find yourself wanting more.
Gisela Valor, a simple girl who runs her family’s herbalist shop, has a big heart, cares for her community and serves as their healer. Everything seems to be improving in her little village now that her father has become the Lord, she should feel happy and free with her new social status, except she’s not. Gisela is hiding a secret, she’s a Mystic. Mystics are feared throughout the kingdom, so much so the King has issued an edict for their immediate execution upon discovery. When the King removes the Life Stones from her village she realizes things are getting bad very fast. Plants are dying and strange creatures start appearing. Gisela knows she must keep her identity as a Mystic hidden, but she also knows she can’t sit by and watch her village deteriorate. Gisela must find a way to save her village and the people she loves before the King destroys everything. But at what cost?
Veil of Kings is an immersive world with a very developed unique magic system. I found myself lost in the story and couldn’t put it down. There are multiple characters who are all very well developed and their stories are all woven intricately throughout. Some conversations between the characters seemed cut and left the flow/development abruptly stopped. Many of which were revisited and expanded upon later. Veil of Kings gave me similar feelings to Spark of the Everflame and Fourth Wing. This is a story of self-discovery, trust, friendship, love, forgiveness, confidence, and family.
Thank you to the author, Michelle Kirby for my eARC in return of my honest review. Can’t wait for book 2!!
I am grateful to have been sent an ARC from the author Michelle Kirby for this book “Veil of Kings”! I love that right off the bat we get a map & a pronunciation guide 👌I am really bad with names in books so this helps. I was able to read this as if I was watching a movie in my head and it doesn’t happen with all books for me. Descriptions of what’s happening like “shadows twisted between the trunks, rustle of leaves made her pulse jump, tears competing with raindrops streaking down her face”. I loved all of it. I also fear that now instead of saying “oh my gosh”, I will be saying “For the love of the six” 🙈

Thank you @MichelleKirby for the ARC of #VeilofKings. I loved this book! For a debut novel the creation of this world was awesome. Bringing to life a place that your mind created and entwined into a massive story. Well done Michelle. So vivid and exciting. The magic was unique and how the main characters developed was great. The Trees and different villages and elements was great foundations to creating a well developed world. Thorne and Gisela.. loved them and the bond.. love.. The ending was WOW and can't stop thinking about what is going to happen next. It could have been a little longer to allow some of the character iteractions and their journey to go for a little longer but the story kept me enthralled and finished it over the weekend as I wanted to know what was next. Looking forward to Book 2 :-)
With its beautiful cover and intriguing premise, I was thrilled to receive an ARC of this book. However, as soon as the characters were introduced, who were quite dull, might I add, that sparkle died. The fast pace of the story made it a bit of a struggle to adjust and fully get into the story. Not to mention, that a lot of the revelations and twists were sorted through too quickly and easily. Initially, I was entertained, but then it quickly became boring. I pushed through, hoping it would improve, but sadly it didn't. This really had so much potential, but it wasn't developed enough.
I absolutely devoured, inhaled and ravaged this story.
Mystics are executed.
That is, until the King makes the sudden choice to spare them, while also removing the Life Stones that sustain the land, as he has ulterior motives on the horizon.
Veil of Kings follows Gisela Valor and Thorne Alderose as they become unexpected allies (and more 😉) when they decide to go through the Trials of Kharos to awaken their Mystic powers and save their villages.
Gisela and Thorne encounter other Mystics which create a sense of found family between the characters as they embark on a journey to save Mystralos from not only the King’s grasp and ruinous plans, but something else lurking.
The magic in this book is so unique with the Primals. I LOVE the Primals — such a fun experience as a reader!
Veil of Kings is written by a debut/indie author and it is every bit as addicting as it is beautifully written. It is fast paced with plenty of details to keep you engaged and needing to know what comes next. The attention to detail is immaculate, and the villages and characters are brought to life brilliantly.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. (via the author)
3.75 stars
This was a fun, easy, fast paced read. The magic system was neat and a little different than I've seen before. Had some good twists and I loved the group that became Gisela's family. I do wish the pacing had been slowed down a bit in parts to flesh out more of the world and character building.
Interesting fast paced story line and intriguing magic system. I liked the FMC and the beginning hooked me. Then by the 30-40% mark I started to struggle. The world building wasn’t there, characters were really rushed through and the romance went from 0 to I love you really quick. It kinda started off as enemies to lovers but fast forward to fated mates. I also didn’t love the little pops of modern dialogue, it’s a peeve of mine and throws me out of the story setting. I think it had potential but was ultimately rushed and I wasn’t able to fully immerse myself into the characters or story.
5 ⭐️ This my very first ARC and I’d like to thank the Author for giving me the change to read this Magical Book before it’s officially released to the world. This book grabbed my heart and mind so quickly. The characters are very well written. The MMC, FMC and side characters are brave, fun, witty, honest, passionate and loyal. I loved the maturity of the young FMC. MMC is dang near perfect in my eyes. The witty banter and smart remarks had me giggling. 🤭 This world Is lush and full of beautiful imagery. I had the greatest time reading this book. I definitely need Book 2 asap - As I’ve got questions that need to be answered and I can’t wait to get back to the Enchanting Magical realm of Mystralos.
"Binge-worthy, magical, and full of tension!" I received an ARC of Veil of Kings from Michelle Kirby and BookFunnel, and I was hooked from page one. Kirby has crafted a world steeped in magic and mystery, centered on 'Mystics' descended from six ancient gods. The main character, Gisela Valor is a simple girl that works in her family’s herbalist shop attempting to avoid the likes of Thorne Alderose. Little to either of them know but they have more in common than they think. Upon discovering each other’s secret they set out to attempt to fix the devastation occurring in their town of Frosthaven. They meet many others along the way and learn of the destruction in other lands. They develop friendships and face trials neither were prepared for. The story is a fast-paced, binge-worthy romantic fantasy with a compelling enemies-to-lovers theme. I was constantly kept on my toes, never quite knowing what to expect next. Michelle Kirby truly leaves no stone unturned (pun intended!), and I finished the book yearning for more of Mystralos. I can't wait to see what’s next!"
Gisela Valor is a brilliant young woman who is fierce. She is the female main character in Veil of Kings. She is trying to save her world from ruin and an evil King. Mystics are those with magic and once their marks are revealed as young men and women they are executed in the village square. One day the executions stop, but the unveiling of why takes the reader on a thrilling adventure across the land of Mystralos. I loved the interaction of found family and the task they must accomplish. The ending was suspenseful and left me wanted more of the story and these wonderful characters.
Veil of Kings, book one of Mystics of Mystralos by Michelle Kirby Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 3.5 stars (rounded up)
I think this debut novel has a lot of potential.
Elements of this novel really reminded me of The Black Witch Chronicles (at least the dynamic between the main characters.)
Speaking of characters, the mains, Gisela and Thorne, were pretty like-able. Gisela didn’t annoy me too much (welcome relief because most FMC’s irritate me.) Thorne was quite the jerk but he got to redeem himself. These two were literally enemies and then BAM, in love and soul bonded. And while having your main characters fall in love and show vulnerability is nice, it was too rushed for me. There wasn’t really the time necessary to develop their relationship (in my opinion, of course.) I feel like maybe Gisela and Thorne could have went from enemies, to tentative friends while the story progressed. Maybe earned and learned to trust each other and build something solid together. Their love would have gone over better with me if it had been saved for the second book.
The cast of support characters was pretty good. They were interesting, they had interesting Mystic powers and it was fun to watch them all interact. If I had to pick a favorite support it would be Silas! My least favorite was definitely Cirrian.
Overall, I enjoyed reading this novel. I found the Guardian Trees, the Mystic stones, the Mystics themselves and their individual powers to be fairly unique. The plot was also good, even when it was predictable. The pacing though, it was quick. And I do mean QUICK. So quick that it actually felt rushed. I think a lot of scenes could have benefited from having more information, more details. More fleshed out. I would have really enjoyed more in depth writing. And that “cliffhanger?” It wasn’t much of a cliffy. It was a dud that fizzled out.
So, am I disappointed that I read this? No. Did I enjoy it? Yes. Will I read the sequel? Also, yes. I have an idea of what I think is happening with the six stones.
Thank you to the author, Michelle Kirby, for the digital advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you to author Michelle Kirby for allowing me the opportunity to read and review an ARC of her debut novel Veil of Kings, available April 2026.
“Eyes on me.” He whispered. He waited until her hazy eyes found his. “I need to see the look in them when you realized no one else is going to make you feel like this.”
We follow Gisela and Thorne as they follow a prophecy across their dying world searching for the stones that will save the land and their people from the rule of a tyrannical king. The stones power the land, but who powers the stones? Will the stones save them or will The Six?
Our FMC and MMC are fun, loving and easily relatable. My favorite thing about these two is actually how their behaviors and their powers match themselves while they are total opposites to each other. Gisela (FMC) is always frostweaver who is always cool, calm and collected. She rarely acts impulsively and even in moments she is, she pauses to think through her actions first. Thorne (MMC) is a fire keeper who tends to let his rage get the best of him, acting on impulse before thought. As their relationship grows, they balance each other out more and more. While their relationship starts out with glimpses of a childhood rivalry, they learn very quickly that in order to survive they have to rely on each other. There is very little bickering and it was refreshing to have a pair who truly sought to work together. They also have a gaggle of friends aiding them in this journey who provide excellent banter in times of peril!
I love the magic system in this story and look forward to seeing it expand as the series continues. There are six elemental powers and lands within the world to match. The lands get their energy from stones that reflect their element and when the stones are taken, the land begins to die.
This story was fast paced and gripping from the first line. Michelle sets the high stakes tone immediately with the execution of mystics throughout the land, painting them as something to be feared. She continues to push the story with a clear purpose and subtle mysteries throughout. Our characters stay on their main target with side quests that aid in the main point. She constructs a beautiful, fun world with Guardian Trees and different elemental areas. Building the world up to compliment the tale without distracting from the plot.
If you are looking for a fun, fast-paced, plot driven story this one is for you!
Michelle Kirby gifted us with a beautiful, fast paced adventure from page freaking one. Our FMC is not only physically strong, but her sharp tongue could KILL. Her dad prepared her for the dangers of the world, and she was a willing student. Our brooding MMC, well he stole the show. I think what’s beautiful about him is that his progress isn’t linear. He’s working through A LOT & rather than meeting the love of his life and overcoming things ““beause he has her,” he continue to battle with his anger and trauma. The love our MCs have for one another is beautiful, and the love they both have for Silas is tear jerking. The found family in book one is a STARTING point that I hope is explored further in book two. Much like Shield of Sparrows, this book is a perfect set up for a massive book two! So many questions left unanswered (but not in an annoying way), and so many relationships left to be explored. So many powers to be used, and so many evils to be stopped! Michelle Kirby’s debut has beautiful world building and just enough action to make you feel like you’re in a movie. The character building is realistic and the relationship building is sweet with a bit of spice. Three cheers for the banter, and three cheers for the shit ton of revenge I hope Marina and Thorne will get in book two. I’ll be lined up at the door as soon as I hear the book two ARC is available… and book one hasn’t even been released yet
This was such a fun read! The magic system is so unique and refreshing, and there are many components to it but not confusing in the slightest. It makes me want to know more.
Our MMC is different. A GOOD different. He’s protective, loyal, and completely aware of his faults. He’s gentle but assertive. Much like Gisela, our FMC. Both characters are not what you usually come across in this genre, but I’m so here for it!
I don’t want to give away any spoilers but note that this is a fast paced plot. Having said that, it does not feel overwhelming at all with the info we’re given in the first half of the book. I love that we get to see the other side of the coin with the King’s storyline. And I love a good side character, which Veil of Kings has plenty.
Now the Island that Gisela and the others visit is a DREAM. The description and imagery of this Island made it so easy for me to create such a vivid picture in my head of what it looks like, and I want to live there too. To the point where I searched “whimsical” (with this island in mind, duh) into Etsy because I needed something tangible to anchor me to this vision of the island… still searching but I definitely feel inspired.
As I mentioned, this book is go go go. When I got to chapter 40, I started to get antsy because what do you mean there’s only five chapters left!? I didn’t know how everything was going to come together in five chapters but it did, satisfyingly so. I cannot wait to continue the journey through Mystralos!
I want to give a massive thank you to Michelle for allowing me to read this before its release. It truly is beautiful!
There’s definitely potential here. You can tell the author is talented. My main issue wasn’t with the story or the characters, but with the execution. The pacing felt awkward at times, and I kept noticing back-to-back sentences that started the same way. Key moments and revelations lacked proper buildup or emotional reaction from the characters and ended up being brushed through. A more careful round of edits would have made a huge difference.
i received this arc of veil of kings and was hooked almost immediately. childhood enemies, a dying land, and magic that must stay hidden made it impossible to put down. i started it thursday night and finished by saturday afternoon because i had to know what happened next.
gisela and thorne's dynamic is easily the highlight. it's tense, sharp, and completely addictive.
I need to know if/when the next book will be out!!!! The plot twist at the end had me 😳. I loved connecting with the characters including getting so annoyed at the MMC while loving him at the same time! Michelle, thank you for the opportunity to read your first book!! I can’t wait for your next one!
Thank you to the author, Michelle Kirby, for the eARC of this book! This book had a lot of good elements - interesting magic, mystery, romance, trials, but everything was so rushed. From beginning to end it was all nonstop without a lot of expansion on big moments or characters, so it all just kind of jumbled together.
Thank you to the author/publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Veil of Kings immediately pulls you in and sets a strong, immersive tone from the start.
Tropes: • one bed • enemies → allies → lovers • magic • trials • high-stakes political tension • found family • prophecy
In a civilization where mystics are executed by the king, Gisela (FMC) wakes one day bearing the very mark that could get her killed. Forced to hide it, even from her own family. She’s left questioning who she can truly trust.
When the king suddenly halts the executions and instead begins seizing life stones from villages (stones that sustain magic, nourish crops, and keep the land alive), Gisela sets out for answers. With her village slowly dying, she reluctantly teams up with her longtime rival, Thorne, embarking on a journey that uncovers not only the truth behind the king’s actions, but her own hidden lineage and power.
The magic system immediately drew me in. It’s one of the strongest aspects of the story. However, the world-building felt a bit underdeveloped, and I found myself wanting more depth and detail. The pacing stays consistently fast, which keeps you engaged, but I do wish it slowed down at times to better build tension and fully flesh out the world.
The dynamic between Thorne and Gisela is compelling. She believes they’ve always hated each other, while he’s clearly had his eyes on her for years. The banter and tension are there, but the relationship progresses a bit too quickly for my taste, leaning into insta-love. I wanted more slow-burn,more yearning, more buildup. That said, I’m fully expecting big things from “eyes on me” Thorne in book two. 🔥
The story has a strong foundation and a captivating premise, but at times, it felt like it skimmed over emotional depth. Some reactions didn’t fully match the weight of certain situations, and moments of quick forgiveness after years of pain felt a bit unrealistic.
That ending twist, though. I did not see it coming!!!
Overall, Veil of Kings left me wanting more in the best and most frustrating way. This absolutely feels like a series where book one sets the stage… and book two has the potential to truly shine.
Michelle Kirby, thank you for letting me be a part of your ARC team!
Fantasy books have me hesitant right now. They either are amazing or just leave me lacking. I think I've been in a lucky streak, because this book hit it out of the park! I literally devoured this book (okay okay, during the time I actually had to read)! The fact I now have to wait has already put me in a complete book slump.
The world is made up of those without magic and Mystics, the inviduals being hunted by the King. Then all of a sudden, the King removes the thing keeping the land alive and the hunting continues for a whole other purpose.
Gisela has quickly become one of my favorite FMCs. Her power reflects who she is, usually cool, calm and thoughtful. This is a girl who was raised to help people and she continues to do so even if it jeopardizes everything. Then you have Thorne and man, am I in love. He is a complete hot head and lets his anger and jealousy guide him. But he also isn't what you think and has this way of bringing you in because he is trying to be better than he was raised.
This book has great character and relationship development, an interesting magic system, a wonderful found family, and a twist I was not ready for! It felt magical and dragged me straight in.
Elemental Magic, dragons and yearning that leave you salivating for more...
On a rush mission to save their land Gisela and Thorne are an unlikely alliance but are they though... They have hidden elemental magic that can get them killed if found but without it their world will die. Found family, yearning that melts your heart and Secrets galore fill this out and that ending has my eyes set on book 2.
Thank you Michelle Kirby for the opportunity to read Veil of Kings in exchange for an honest review!
The first chapter was interesting/hooks you. As you continue to read, you get a good sense of the magic system, politics, and high-stakes secrets. The FMC has great one liners throughout the book that made me chuckle…”I doubt it was you who saw me. It doesn’t look like you can see much at all.” iykyk.
The story progresses quickly, leaving little room for world building and yearning between the MMC and FMC. I, personally, like slow burns and wish the story slowed down just a bit, so that I could feel more invested in the main characters’ relationship. I wish the world building was deepened because the world/villages the author created seemed beautiful.
Veil of Kings by Michelle Kirby is truly one of a kind. If you’re looking to take your imagination on a journey, this is the perfect novel to dive into. Kirby’s writing is fluid and richly descriptive, making it easy to feel fully immersed in the story. Readers will be drawn alongside Gisela as she navigates the world of Mystralos, experiencing each challenge and triumph right beside her. Blending adventure, romance, and fantasy seamlessly, this book offers something for anyone who enjoys an engaging and imaginative escape. If you’re searching for a story that captures all three, Veil of Kings is definitely worth the read.
You know a book was good when at the end of it you scream, “WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?!” and “OMG! I DID NOT SEE THAT COMING!”.
The entire story is well written and easy to follow. It is fantasy forward with romance sprinkled in. You will fall in love with each character who all have their own unique personality and story to tell.
This was my first ever ARC read and what an absolute honor it has been. Thank you Michelle Kirby! I cannot wait to read what you write next.
Pros 🔥Fast paced & engaging 🔥Elemental magic 🔥Good ending- no ragey cliffhanger just left me wanting more 🔥Could definitely recover from pacing and give characters more depth in coming book(s)
Cons ❄️Thorne lol ❄️Pacing was a bit of a double edged sword making supporting characters & connections a little lackluster
Hot Take: Could’ve just scrapped that sexy scene and made this a nice fade to black YA
ARC review I was SUPER excited for this book. I was an Avatar the Last Airbender kid back in the day so I loveeeee anything and everything elemental magic.
The usual issue with pacing is it being slow and dragged out, however this could’ve been 100 more pages and I wouldn’t have minded.
This book is advertised as fast paced and anti-slow-burn, and it definitely delivers on that, but I do think the relationships/dynamic suffered because of how fast it actually was. We not only had the love interest hot boiling and ready to snap in place but also immediate friendships which to me made our “found family” fall a little flat. This could definitely recover in the coming book(s) though.
Overall though, the story kept my attention until the very end and the ending was VERY well done. I will definitely be reading the next book.
I was lucky to get chosen as an ARC reader by the author and it did not disappoint!!
Veil of Kings takes you into the world of Mystralos! It is a very fast paced witchy fantasy romance. It’s giving Salem Witch Trial vibes with a power hungry king! You get enemies to lovers, fated mates, gothic vibes, one bed, dragons and other magical creatures!!!
Thank you to the author for my ARC of this book! If you love Romantasy, this is for you. An intriguing story that opens up an entire new world and as the story unfolds you fall deeper and deeper in love with its characters. What I loved most was that it didn’t linger unnecessarily and the pacing kept the story moving. Can’t wait for the next one!
