2 stars fot me.

Joanne Spalding wakes up and there's her husband Ollie car on fire. Before help comes, car explodes killing her husband. It's difficult to know who wanted Ollie dead,he was a very good divorce lawyer and had a few enemies.

Will his asisstant Kim and wife Joanne ever get the answers?

It was a mystery filled read.Told from few POV I got very fast a picture what was going on.It left me surprised how the quilty one's were quite dumb, and risk for everyone to see them together.A quick mystery,I liked the beginning but I didn't like the ending.

Thank you netgalley and Joffe books publisher for arc,my review is honest and my own.

I adore McGarvey's books. She writes a fantastic psychological thriller and this one didn't disappoint. I really enjoyed the book. The story was excellent and the concept was extremely interesting.

The cover is good. It's very fitting of the genre. I loved the colours and the fancy house. It was really well done.

The writing is fantastic and the story flows well. The book is written in a mix of first and third person. First person is from Kim's point of view. Third person is multiple points of view. Including Ollie, Joanna and Fitz. I loved this idea and I thought it worked superbly. The story had lots of shocks and twists. I managed to figure out one of the guilty party but how they came about their actions was a shock. This was written so well.

The book of set in the town of Weston, Connecticut. It sounds like a lovely town. The setting was good and worked well.

Oh the characters. They were sensational. They were so well thought out and developed. I loved Kim. She was so smart and tried to the right thing by Ollie after his murder. I loved Ollie too. I was so sad about his death. The side characters were all wonderful too. They were brilliant to read about.

I definitely recommend the book to you all!!

What an absolutely explosive opening to this story… 😳

In the dead of night, Joanna and Ollie are jolted awake- only to be met with a terrifying sight: their brand-new car engulfed in flames. Before they can even react, the fire intensifies, the heat roars… and then an explosion rips through the silence - killing Ollie. 🚗 🔥

Before his death, Ollie was a successful divorce lawyer living a great life - well liked by many… but with more than a few enemies made along the way. So who would be capable of killing him? 🤷🏼‍♀️

His assistant of over two decades, Kim, won’t rest until the truth comes out. Would Kim ever get the answers she wanted? 🤔

This book had me completely hooked - I couldn’t put it down until I knew who was behind it… such an addictive, gripping, twisty psychological thriller! 📖👀

A massive thank you to McGarvey and Zooloos Book Tours for letting me participate in this tour ♥️

I felt it lulled a tad in the middle & I did guess who dunnit but didn't guess another gasp out loud twist nearer the end. I liked the characters especially Kim & Ollie & overall a really good read 📖.

A gripping crime/psychological thriller that had me hooked! A bit of a slow burner to start with, but it’s essential to capture lots of the details that come to light later in the book. I thought I had an idea about the culprit, but I couldn’t have been more wrong! Loved it, and will definitely be reading more from this author.

What a gripping and intense crime thriller this was!
The story begins with a truly shocking opening. Joanne Spalding is woken late one evening by the sound of a car alarm, only to discover that her husband Ollie’s Range Rover is on fire in their driveway. As Ollie rushes outside to try to put out the flames, the unthinkable happens—the car explodes. Watching helplessly while on the phone with the police dispatcher, Joanne is forced to witness the horrifying moment that takes her husband’s life.
Detective Brian Fitz has the heartbreaking task of informing Joanne that Ollie died instantly in the blast. Soon after, Ollie’s assistant, Kim DeLuca, is also given the devastating news. The investigation quickly reveals that the explosion wasn’t an accident—it was a deliberate act involving a bomb placed in the car.
The story then shifts back two years earlier, allowing us to see Ollie’s life as a highly respected divorce lawyer. Known for helping clients through difficult and often bitter separations, Ollie has built a strong reputation. However, while his clients may be grateful, their ex-spouses often leave the courtroom furious and seeking someone to blame. With so many potential enemies, the question quickly becomes: could one of these angry ex-partners be responsible for Ollie’s murder?
From this point on, the tension builds steadily as Kim and Detective Fitz dig deeper into Ollie’s life and the many people who may have wanted revenge. I’ll admit that I had my suspicions early on about who might be responsible, but that didn’t take away from the excitement at all. The author still manages to deliver plenty of twists and surprises along the way.
This was a book that genuinely kept me turning the pages. I found myself frantically reading just to see what would happen next. The pacing is excellent and the suspense never lets up.
One of the standout aspects of the story for me was Kim’s determination. Her tenacity and refusal to give up in the search for justice for Ollie makes her a very compelling character, and I found myself really rooting for her.
The way everything comes together in the final part of the book is nothing short of brilliant. The author gives readers a chilling insight into the mind of the narcissistic killer, which makes the conclusion both shocking and incredibly satisfying.
Overall, this was a fantastic crime thriller that kept me hooked from beginning to end. McGarvey Black has truly impressed me with this novel, and I’m very much looking forward to reading more of their work in the future.

The title and the intriguing blurb caught my attention, and I had a feeling I would enjoy this book, and I was right. It turned out to be such a gripping read that I finished it in a single sitting.
The story begins with the shocking and unexpected murder of Oliver /Ollie, a famous divorce lawyer, who is killed right in front of his wife’s eyes. From there, the narrative unfolds as an investigation into who might have wanted him dead. Oliie had no shortage of enemies and had made many along the way, and this fact makes the mystery even more compelling.
The narrative is from multiple POVs, which adds depth to the storyline. It kept me engaged and at the end of the seat as well. Each perspective reveals a little more about the characters and their possible connections to the crime. All at once, everyone looks like a suspect, but there is no solid lead!
I liked that the author has given us different angles of the story by presenting it from multiple perspectives. This made the mystery even more layered and engaging.
While I sort of had a slight suspicion about who the killer might be, I was surprised by the motive and the reasons behind it. The author has skillfully built the tension with unexpected twists and turns. The ending, in particular, came as a genuine shock.
I also liked how well the characters were portrayed. I could really feel Kim’s anguish over losing her mentor in such a tragic way. Though Ollie’s twins, Hannah and Henry, do not appear frequently in the story, their presence is quietly felt throughout. I also found myself developing a soft corner for Detective Fitz. On the other hand, I disliked Ivan Nobokov and Tyrese, while I couldn’t help but feel sympathy for Sofia.
If you enjoy thrillers or murder mysteries that keep you on the edge of your seat and take you on a roller coaster of emotions and twists, this is certainly a book worth picking up.
After reading this book, I am definitely interested in exploring more of the author’s work.

Going into The Divorce Lawyer, I was immediately drawn to the premise — a powerful, high-profile lawyer with no shortage of enemies, and a mystery shaped by the life he led. But what really anchored the story for me was Kim.

Her connection to Ollie isn’t romantic, but something much more grounded and meaningful. As someone who grew up without a stable family, she sees him as a mentor and a constant in her life — almost a father figure. That dynamic adds a quieter emotional layer to the story and gives her determination a strong sense of loyalty and purpose.

The story opens with a dramatic moment before shifting back in time, gradually building a picture of Ollie’s world and the relationships around him. The timeline moves between past and present, and while this creates a broader understanding of events, I occasionally found myself wanting a little more focus around the central incident to keep that momentum fully connected. That said, it does allow for a more detailed exploration of how everything came to unfold.

As the investigation progresses, the narrative leans into Kim’s perspective, and I found myself questioning early on why she had taken on such a central role in uncovering the truth. While her loyalty is never in doubt, I wasn’t always fully convinced by the reasoning — but it does give the story a more personal lens, keeping us close to someone who knew Ollie best.

I also found myself forming a theory quite early on, which shifted my reading experience slightly. Instead of wondering who, it became more about watching the pieces fall into place and seeing whether my instincts were right. For readers who enjoy testing their own suspicions and following the trail step by step, that element will definitely add to the appeal.

What stood out most was the contrast in how Ollie is perceived — a protector and guiding presence to Kim, yet clearly a very different figure in the lives of others. That duality adds an underlying tension that runs throughout the story.

While this wasn’t quite the right fit for me personally, I can absolutely see it resonating with readers who enjoy slower-burn, character-focused thrillers where the journey of uncovering the truth is just as important as the reveal itself. If you like piecing together timelines, exploring motivations, and seeing how everything connects, this is one to add to your list.

When Joanna Spalding is awakened in the middle of the night by a car alarm, she wastes no time in waking up her husband Ollie so he can investigate. Ollie, a successful divorce lawyer, has recently purchased the Range Rover and is extremely protective of it. As he gets up to investigate, the noise stops, so the couple goes back to bed. Joanna can’t relax and gets up to look outside. That’s when she notices that her husband’s beloved vehicle is on fire. This time Ollie wastes no time in rushing outside. Joanna is watching as he reaches the car, just as it explodes. As the police begin their investigation, they are faced with the reality that through his work, Ollie had made plenty of enemies. Divorces are volatile at the best of times, but many of Ollie’s clients are extremely wealthy and not happy about having to part with any of their assets. Ollie’s office assistant, Kim DeLuca, knew him, his business, and his personal life better than anyone. A few years previously Ollie had lost his beloved wife Grace to cancer, and Joanna, while an accomplished and beautiful companion, could never replace the hole that Grace left behind. Joanna throws herself into charity work and shopping, while Ollie continues to work long hours. As Kim tries to assist the police in their investigation, the pool of suspects is narrowed to three high-profile men who have reason to be angry with how their divorces turned out. As the investigation looks closer at each of the suspects, Kim has to try to adjust to a new normal while trying to figure out who was angry enough to kill Ollie.

The story got off to an explosive (ha!) start, but once the investigation began into the main suspects, the story bogged down a bit. It was quite slow moving until a twist came near the end, when the action picked up significantly. Overall, I enjoyed the story and greatly appreciated the main culprits giving detailed explanations of their crimes!

Thanks to Joffe for an ARC of this book.

This story follows Kim DeLuca, the loyal assistant of famous divorce lawyer Ollie Spalding. Ollie is known for winning brutal divorce cases against rich and powerful men. His victories leave many people angry and ruined. One night everything changes when Ollie dies in a shocking car explosion outside his own house.
Kim refuses to believe it was just an accident. As the investigation begins, more secrets start to appear. Ollie had many enemies. Rich husbands who lost everything in court. Powerful people who wanted revenge. Every clue leads to a new suspect and every chapter reveals another hidden truth.
This book completely pulled me in from the first chapter. The mystery felt so addictive and the tension kept growing with every page. The suspects kept changing and I loved how the story slowly connected all the characters together. The author created such a clever plot with secrets layered everywhere.
Kim was such a strong and determined character. I loved following her journey as she tried to uncover the truth behind Ollie’s death. The investigation felt intense and the twists made the story even more exciting. Just when I thought I understood everything, another surprise appeared.
The final twist was honestly brilliant. Everything suddenly made sense and it left me shocked in the best way. The pacing was fast, the mystery was gripping, and the suspense kept me completely hooked.
This was such a thrilling and satisfying read for me. If you enjoy twisty thrillers full of secrets and revenge, this book is definitely worth reading.

The Divorce Lawyer opens with a literal bang. The scene sets the stage for the rest of the story.

Book is told in multiple POVs - some of them very detailed. There are some twists along the way.

There is nothing inherently wrong with this one though it just did not fully land for me. There was a disconnect for me with the characters. I think maybe there were too many characters at some points and so I struggled to keep them straight.

This is the second book I’ve read by this author. Both well written and quick reads. I liked the other one better than this one but I still will continue to read her work. Thriller lovers will enjoy this one. Bonus points for not relying on the characters being stupid to advance the plot.

This was another twisty thriller by an author that I know quite well now.

Having enjoyed multiple books already, I was really looking forward to diving g into this new release.

This was a tricky read because we follow Ollie's story just as he's about to die and then as we delve back into his life, he really was a great character to explore, yet we know that things won't develop from that point on.

I loved the relationship that Ollie had with Kim and it's clear that he really looked after her and that she looked up to him as she would her father.

Despite being ruthless in the courtroom, he really did come across as such a lovely person.

However, his death was suspicious and Kim will not let things lie until she has found out who was involved in killing Ollie - and let me tell you, there were a lot of suspects to pick from.

I liked that I could follow this mystery quite easily and worked through the clues to make my own assumptions and theories - but I was still invested from start to finish.

This was a fast paced read and the multi pov chapters had me racing to the end.

Another great read to add to my growing collection.

The Divorce Lawyer By McGarvey Black
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Gosh! Wow!
This is the 2nd book I've read from this author and it hasn't disappointed!
Ollie is a divorce lawyer who knows what and how to get the best for his clients. When Ollies wife Grace, passes away, he marries Joanna. He puts a prenuptial in place- he's a lawyer, so he knows he has too
When Ollie dies, fingers are pointed. We follow ex-clients, disgruntled ex's - the list is long!
What follows is wickedly twisted story!
I had my suspicions, but wow!!!

I loved Ollie's character
His relationship with Kim, his assistant was so special. She thought of him as a father figure and he always had her best interests at heart. Even in death he wanted to look after everyone.
I'm glad Kim got her happily ever after. She deserved it! The killer wouldn't of been found without her sleuth skills and love for Ollie

A must for thriller readers

The Divorce Lawyer is a sharp, fast‑paced thriller that hooks you from the opening line and never loosens its grip. Kim DeLuca, loyal to a fault and fiercely competent, is the kind of narrator you trust instantly — which makes watching her world implode all the more gripping. She’s spent years keeping Ollie Spalding’s high‑stakes divorce empire running, and the bond between them feels tender, complicated, and deeply human. So when Ollie is murdered, the loss hits with real emotional weight.

The novel thrives on the tension between Kim’s grief and her determination. Ollie had a long list of enemies — powerful, volatile people who don’t like losing — and the deeper Kim digs, the more dangerous the truth becomes. The story moves with a sleek, propulsive energy, weaving psychological suspense with the messy realities of loyalty, ambition, and the secrets we keep for the people we love.

What makes this thriller stand out is Kim herself. She’s not a detective, not a hardened investigator — she’s a woman who suddenly has everything to lose, and her voice brings a raw, grounded urgency to every twist. As the clues tighten and the final reveal snaps into place, the book delivers exactly the kind of jaw‑dropping twist that makes this genre so addictive.

A tense, emotionally charged page‑turner about loyalty, power, and the dangerous shadows cast by other people’s secrets.

My thanks to McGarvey Black, the publisher and netgalley for the ARC

First off please say there will be another book with Kim DeLuca 🙏 I Love her!
A great character who is nice but also like a dog with a bone, this was such a good read although I was secretly hoping Ollie wasn’t really dead at all 😂.
A great twisty story with lots of possible suspicious characters, it did keep me guessing.
I didn’t want this book to end it was great, and that ending just left me crying out for more! The characters in this book were so well written and each could have had their own book too.

I couldn’t put this down!

The novel takes us through several character perspectives and timelines, increasing the switches as the novel progresses, which I felt really gave me a feeling of urgency towards the climax. I found it a bit of a slow burn at times in the first half, but that wasn’t a bad thing on reflection as it lulled me into a false sense of security so I didn’t see the later twists coming.

I didn’t initially warm to Kim, partially because I was wondering whether there was going to be a reveal about her relationship with Ollie. Once I realised how much he was like a father to her though, I began rooting for her. Given his status as a kind mentor outside of the courtroom and a cutthroat lawyer protecting his clients within, people either loved or loathed Ollie depending on whose side he was on. Which meant there were quite a few suspects for his death.

I enjoyed the way the key clients’ lives were interwoven with Ollie and Kim’s, with my eyes being opened a little wider when a little more was revealed each time there was a timeline or perspective shift. And there were numerous, “Shut the front door!” moments, especially in the final quarter.

It’s a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 rating from me!

Ok but not great

It was a book with a twist for sure. I didn't really care for the ending and the Poppie character getting away with everything. There needed to be closure there. It was a bit boring in the beginning and took me longer to read than most books but it did pick up some. Like I said didn't care for the ending and would have loved to see the twins get their parents house back.

This must be best profession to make enemies.
Whichever partner wins in a divorce case the other is the loser and therefore not a fan of
the lawyers. Ellie Spalding was a divorce lawyer and the best in the field. He rarely lost a
case and was in high demand for some of the highest profile cases. He had many
satisfied customers but also made a lot of enemies. The law firm had received a lot of
threats mainly aimed at Ollie and security had been beefed up. Ellie was not impressed
and particularly disliked the security around his house, he hated the cameras a had t o
be reminded to switch them on. The nightmare attack happens and his wife wakes to
the sound the alarm sounding on his brand new Range Rover parked in the grounds of
their gated home. Convinced it’s a false alarm he cancels it and goes back to bed. Next
thing the car bursts into flames and Ollie rushes out to save the car that he’s waited
months for. As he approaches the luxury SUV explodes and Ollie is engulfed. The death
is ruled a murder when its discovered that a remotely controlled bomb had been
planted. Which of the recent divorce case losers could have hated him enough to
commit murder.
A powerful twisty thriller ensues that brings out McGarvey Blacks writing skills to keep
you riveted until the very last scene!

ARC Review

This was a really enjoyable psychological thriller. It hooked me right away. Full of twists and turns. It’s fast paced and leaves you craving more.

I would like to thank Joffe Books and McGarvey Black for allowing me to read this great book prior to publication.

“Divorce can be like living in shark infested waters, the divorce lawyers being those killer sharks.”

“Story told by Kim Deluca assistant to Ollie Spalding, Connecticut’s most successful divorce lawyer. I’m the one who keeps his empire running while he charms judges, terrifies opponents, and wins cases no one else can touch.
Ollie isn’t just my boss. I grew up in foster care—he’s the closest thing I’ve ever had to family. My mentor. My protector. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for him.
But Ollie made enemies for a living.
He went up against people with money, power—and tempers that scared even the police.
Now he’s dead.
The police want a list of his enemies.
I can’t even count them.
But I’m going to find out who killed him.
And when I do… I might wish I hadn’t.”

This is my second book from this author and I will definitely be reading more of her work. I highly recommend you pick up the story and enjoy it for yourself.

Punchy! I’ve never really considered that a divorce lawyer puts themselves in potential danger every time they do well for their client, to the detriment to that client’s ex-spouse. Ollie Spalding is so good at his job, that he has made several enemies. Most of them calm down after the initial anger subsides, but when Ollie is murdered, his P.A. and long-term friend is determined to work out who is responsible.

I found the pace slower than I usually find in books from this author and there was a slight predictability, but although I had a pretty good idea who, I hadn’t fully worked out why and how. Once everything unravelled, the ending tied up neatly, but predictably.

An enjoyable read.

A really well written storyline, a much sought out divorce lawyer, Ollie Spalding is at the top of his game, but being a top notch divorce lawyer comes with some down sides, especially when you peeve off the wrong people and these people have endless finances and a grudge to bare.

This was such an engaging read — one that kept me constantly guessing right up until the final stretch.

There were so many possible suspects (in the best way), and every time I thought I had it figured out, something shifted. It genuinely kept me questioning everything, and I didn’t feel confident in my guess until about the last 20% of the book.

The pacing was great throughout, it moved quickly without feeling rushed, and the tension built really naturally as the story unfolded.

It’s also slightly different to what I usually pick up, which made it even more refreshing. I always love when a book takes me out of my usual reading comfort zone and still completely hooks me.

A twisty, addictive read that definitely kept me on my toes, I’d recommend this if you love trying to piece things together as you go!

Kim is a compelling protagonist-clever, determined, and deeply human-navigating dangerous secrets while questioning her own choices. The tension is relentless, every scene layered with suspicion, and the legal setting adds an extra edge, making the stakes feel immediate.

The twists are shocking yet believable. Red herrings are carefully planted throughout that make the reveals satisfying. The pacing is tight, the atmosphere dark and tense, and the characters are full of hidden motives that kept me guessing until the very end. And THAT twist- I did not see it coming at all!! I loved how the novel explored loyalty, betrayal, and the gray areas of human nature. If you love thrillers where trust is fragile, danger lurks everywhere, and nothing is quite what it seems, this one will hook you hard.

Thank you to Zooloo's Book Tours and the author for this ARC.

Firstly, I really enjoyed how the author used different perspectives and timelines to build up the sense of the titular character - it was lovely to read a story about such a genuinely nice guy! In addition to that, the fact that he had a really solid relationship with his female office manager without either of them pining after each other was just so welcome and refreshing.

The plot was enjoyable, and while I had sort of figured out whodunnit quite early on, there were layers and layers upon that, making a far more developed and fun-to-read story.
