The Marrow Vows: A Gothic Dark Romantasy Horror And Supernatural Novella

Rate this book
They called her a rot-witch. Then they threw her to the dark.

Twenty-four-year-old Sylvia Locke is the only mortician in the cursed village of Oakhaven. Armed with heavy steel trocars and silver wire, she performs the grueling magic of a Sin-Eater, stitching the dead to keep a parasitic sickness known as the Blight from swallowing the town. She is the absolute necessity they despise—the shield they spit upon.

Until the night the Blight mutates, and the panicked town demands a sacrifice.

Betrayed by the very neighbors she protected, Sylvia is dragged up the mountain and forced through the rusted iron gates of the Blackwood Estate. Offered as the "Bone Tithe," she is a peace offering to the terrifying, eldritch Entity that commands the rot. She is supposed to be devoured.

But Kaelen, the ancient Lord of Blackwood, is a towering monolith of pure void and shifting porcelain masks. And when Sylvia crosses his threshold, he doesn't find a weeping, fragile victim. He finds a survivor who looks death in the eye.

If you ever wanted your romance with a side serving of body horror and ancient dread this dark visceral novella is for you. Rightoff the bat I was appreciative of the avoidance of "damsel in distress" tropes and instead got sylvia locke a mortician witch facing off against the gruesome Blight armed with steel trocars and silver wire. The writing did a good job providing a steady chilling roadmap through Oakhaven with rot and treachery practically oozen through the pages. What i loved most was the bone tithe sustained dynamic at Blackwood Estate. I learnt that when Sylvia is sacrificed to Kaelen ancient Lord of shifting masks and horror the story pivots from an exploration of alien monstrosities to a deeply seductive eldritch obsession. Kaelen is taut with tension a towering void of a thing and his final match comes in the savage form of a woman who literally spends her days stitching the dead. It’s a sincere exploration of desire in the most morbid places and I liked that the bone tithe framework works quite well. Its an efficient read and I was pleasantly surprised by the scale for the character relationships for the breath of content. The juxtaposition of the grotesque parasitic sickness against the slow burn supernatural connection is an effective and straightforward way to keep the stakes high. There’s a nice indie WAFI exterior roadmap into rot witches and porcelain masks if you’re interested!

I really liked the atmosphere in this one. It starts strong — the morgue scene was honestly unsettling in the best way — and from there it keeps that cold, rotten, gothic mood going almost the whole time. Fog, decay, superstition, a village willing to sacrifice the person who’s been holding everything together… that part worked really well for me.

Sylvia was also easy to root for. She feels tired, angry, practical, and very alone in a way that makes the horror land harder. I liked that the story doesn’t waste time getting cruel. The betrayal happens early, and from that point on it feels like she’s moving through a nightmare that keeps getting worse.

What kept this from being a full five stars for me is that the writing can be a little too intense all at once. Sometimes every line is trying very hard to be dark and dramatic, and I wanted a little more variation in rhythm. But even with that, I stayed interested the whole time because the imagery is strong and the central setup is genuinely good.

If you like gothic horror with body horror, rot, cursed villages, and that “everyone is doomed and nobody is telling the full truth” feeling, this is worth picking up.

Sylvia Locke, a young mortician in a cursed village, endures the grim work no one else will—fighting a deadly rot while feeling isolated and misunderstood by the very people she tries to protect.
But when the sickness changes, the town turns on her. Betrayed and sacrificed, she’s sent to a foreboding dark estate—an ancient manor shrouded in secrets—as an offering to something far worse than death.
Instead of breaking, Sylvia faces it head-on—and what waits for her isn’t what anyone expected, leaving readers eager to see her overcome the darkness.

It was so sad to see how the people in Oakhaven treated Sylvia just because she was a rot-witch who did a hard job. She was the only reason they were still alive, but they were still happy to sacrifice her to the monster. When she gets to the big estate, she finds out that the monster Kaelen is actually very lonely and powerful. The way he looks, like a tall tower of shadow, was really fun to imagine while I was reading. This is a perfect story for anyone who likes dark magic and brave girls.

The whole rot-witch idea and the way the main character is treated by the village gave the story a darker emotional layer that made me more invested. This isn’t a soft or comforting romance. It’s darker, more complicated, and sometimes even uncomfortable, which is exactly what I expect from this kind of story. The characters aren’t perfect, and the emotions aren’t clean or easy, but that’s what made it feel more real to me.

Atmosphere carries this novella from the first page, with a grim setting and a protagonist who actually earns your respect through what she endures. The concept is original, especially the Sin-Eater work and the Blight, and it adds a raw edge that most dark fantasy avoids. The relationship dynamic is unsettling in a good way, and the tone stays consistently eerie without losing control. Short, sharp, and memorable.

I picked up The Marrow Vows because I enjoy gothic stories, and it really delivered that eerie, haunting atmosphere I was hoping for. The mix of romance, horror, and supernatural elements kept me interested the whole way through. I especially liked how the dark tone didn’t take away from the emotional side of the story it actually made the relationships feel more intense. It’s a short read, but it leaves a strong impression and lingers in your thoughts after the final page.

The Marrow Vows is haunting and visceral. Sylvia Locke’s world—sewing Blight victims shut while despised by her town—pulls you in immediately. Dark, poetic, and utterly compelling. Perfect for fans of folk horror and morally complex heroines.
