Sunlark College's Occult Studies Program trains its scholars to face what the world has forgotten: monsters exist. Students hunt them in pairs, stepping into realms where knowledge is earned in blood and survival is never guaranteed.

Nora Albright arrives at Sunlark marked by loss. Orphaned daughter of renowned occult researchers, she enters the Program determined to prove herself. But a near-fatal assignment shatters her assumptions about her legacy. What she inherited isn't reputation but power—raw, undiluted, and rising fast in her veins.

Astar Taylor has spent his life hoping to be overlooked. Reserved, watchful, and half demon, he has mastered staying unseen in a world that fears him. With Nora, he finds an alliance he never meant to form—and a risk he never meant to take.

Together, the unlikely pair has become the OSP's strongest Initiates, facing vampires, golems, fallen angels, and creatures from myth and folklore. With every advancement, the assignments grow deadlier, and it's more than just their peers' eyes on them, waiting for them to fall.

But the true danger isn't what lurks in the dark—it's the power awakening inside them that could destroy them both.

**ARC REVIEW**

First, thank you Andi for giving me the opportunity to read this masterpiece as an ARC!! I've been in a slump for a while and this pulled me right back out.

Now for the important part:

After finishing this book, I expressed to Andi that I'm not usually a YA reader because I don't jive with the "typical" YA writing style. I did not have that problem with this book. It was descriptive without overdoing it, the dialogue didn't feel immature, and THE CHARACTERS!! If you're tired of the FMC in fantasy novels being a "weak little girl" who relies on the MMC to do everything for her, this is the book for her. One of the things I loved is that in the university they attend, the OSP program requires each partner to pull their weight to get full points on assignments. So, Nora literally CAN'T rely on Astar for everything. Yes, she relies on him like any partner would & learns from him, but it doesn't overshadow who she is.

Now Astar. My sweet, sweet Astar. Astar is a half-demon who is constantly at war with his demon side because he is afraid the demon will devour him & he will lose all of his humanity. Just like Astar helped Nora develop herself, Nora is devoted to helping Astar retain his humanity.

Then there's Jean & Mira. I love love love the relationship between Nora & Jean because it feels like a "sibling rivalry" type. It makes sense that they don't get along initially because they're each others toughest competitors. But, at the end of the day, they realize how valuable a friendship can be in a cutthroat environment. I can't wait to see more of them & also see how Mira's character continues to develop, especially in relation to Astar & their powers.

If you want an academia setting, a fun magic system, and a well developed YA novel, this book is for you. It was such a breath of fresh air and I'm already looking forward to the second book. Oh and it DOESN'T end on a cliffhanger which I am SO grateful for in a world where every book ends on one.

Honest review of an advanced reader copy: WOW, there is so much good to say about this dual POV book.

If you are looking for: a powerful FMC (Nora), a mysterious MMC who is half-demon (Astar), a new form of magic and monsters, unexpected twists, and a school setting, you have found your book!

This book starts off fast and interesting and keeps you hooked the entire way through, I need book two NOW! I absolutely loved Nora and Astar’s friendship and watching it grow as they put more trust into each other. This is not a love story, but it is still equally as sweet.

I haven’t been this obsessed with a read in a while! I normally do not read YA books, but I absolutely loved this/ I can’t wait for it to come out so I can get my hands on a physical copy, and thank you to the author for allowing me to read the ARC.

Andrea Dean's "Burn" is a journey into the unknown, set in a newly imagined world of Sunlark College's Occult Studies Program. This book is a blend of dark fantasy and action, and drew me into a story where the lines between reality and myth blur, and where danger is everywhere.

From the very first page, I was hooked on the main characters! Nora Albright and Astar Taylor leap off the page and held me a death grip! Nora, marked by the tragic loss of her parents, steps into Sunlark College with a fierce determination to prove herself, only to discover that her legacy is far more than she ever imagined. Her journey from an untested scholar to a powerful, commanding force is fascinating!

Astar Taylor, on the other hand, introduces an intriguing dynamic to the story. As a half-demon who has learned to remain hidden and unobtrusive in a world that fears and misunderstands him, his partnership with Nora is both unexpected and electric. Together, they form a duo that is as powerful as it is unlikely, facing not only external threats from creatures of lore but also the internal awakening of dangerous powers within themselves.

"Burn" delves into themes of legacy, identity, and the raw, untamed nature of power. Nora's inheritance of raw, undiluted power is both a gift and a curse, challenging her sense of self and her place within the world. Astar's struggle to balance his demonic heritage with his desire to be accepted and loved presents a poignant counterpoint to Nora's journey.

What sets "Burn" apart from other fantasy novels is the authors ability to create a world that feels both expansive and detailed. Sunlark College itself is almost a character, with its hidden depths and dark corners, a place where knowledge is earned in blood and survival is never guaranteed.

For me, the relationship between Nora and Astar remains the heart of the story. Their growing bond, tested by the dangers they face and the powers they struggle to control, is both touching and fraught with tension.

In conclusion, this is a must-read for fans of dark fantasy and action. With its well-drawn characters, immersive world-building, and pulse-pounding narrative, this book is thrilling! I give it 5 stars!!!!!!

This was an ARC from the publisher/author
Burn by Andrea Dean was a compelling read that held my attention from start to finish. The story was well structured, with steady momentum and just enough tension to keep me invested. I never once felt the story was rushed, as it continued to build. One reason for this was its well-developed characters, which felt realistic and believable, and made it easy to connect with their journeys.
I really appreciated that the book works well for both YA readers and adults who prefer stories without spice. The focus stays on the plot, character development, and emotional stakes rather than romance-driven intensity, which makes it widely accessible.
As an ARC reader, I found this to be an engaging and satisfying read, and I would recommend it to readers looking for a clean, character-driven story with a solid twist. I cannot wait for the next book to be released!

✨ Review of ARC from Author ✨

I want to start off by saying thank you to Andi for writing this absolute masterpiece and allowing me to read the arc 🔥

BURN had me HOOKED from page 1! To say I love this book would be an understatement, I haven’t stopped thinking about it since finishing it. I honestly have already thought about rereading it.

I ADORE Nora (Badass FMC) and Astar (Badass MMC) 🩸🔥 Watching them become friends and putting so much trust into each other was so sweet. I don’t really get emotional while I read, but I had tears three times 😭

It’s easy to follow, and I was able to jump back in if I got distracted, which I appreciate as someone who’s easily distracted. It’s well-written, simple, yet immersive, and the twists were jaw-dropping 😱

I highly recommend picking this one up, it’s an absolute page turner and will have you saying “just one more chapter.”

I need the second book so bad it burns 🔥

REVIEW OF ARC SENT BY AUTHOR
BURN BY ANDREA DEAN

What to Expect:
• Half-demon MMC
• Blood-powered FMC
• Private college setting
• Hidden realms + rich lore
• Rune magic
• “Touch her and die” vibes
• Student rivalry
• Dual POV

YA isn’t usually my go-to, but I am so glad I was given the chance to ARC read because it completely hooked me.

The story takes place at Sunlark College within the occult studies program, where students are paired up and trained to hunt monsters. Such a cool concept, and it was executed so well.

Our FMC, Nora, is the orphaned daughter of two well-known figures, and she’s determined to prove she belongs there for who she is, not just her name. I loved her drive and confidence. She knows exactly what she wants and goes after it, no hesitation.

Then there’s Astar… our half-demon MMC. Quiet, broody, keeps to himself, you know the type, and I ate it up. But beneath that guarded exterior, he’s incredibly soft, especially when it comes to Nora. Watching him try to hide who he is while slowly letting her in? So good.

And Nora’s reaction when she learns the truth? Even better. No fear, no backing away—she leans in and chooses to stand by him. Their bond felt genuine and grew in such a natural, meaningful way. I loved the character development for both of them.

The writing is easy to get into, flows really well, and does a great job pulling you into the world. The plot kept me engaged the whole time, and once it picked up toward the end… wow. I did not see that ending coming.

A dual POV will always have my heart, and this one did it right.

Highly recommend if you’re looking for something fast-paced, emotional, and just a little addictive.

Huge thank you to the author for the copy—I’ll definitely be thinking about this one for a while!

Wow wow wow!
YA is not what I would typically read but I’m so glad I read this book! It was fantastic!

This book had me hooked! Couldn’t put it down.

This book takes place at Sunlark College’s in the occult studies program, there they train their students to hunt monsters in teams of two.

Our FMC Nora, is an orphaned daughter of two very well known parents. She is determined to prove that she belongs there not just because of her last name.
I loved Nora, she is a girl who knows what she wants and goes for it.

Astar our MMC is half demon, he’s quiet and moody. He tries to stay hidden away.
I adored Astar, the way he interacts with Nora is so sweet. He tried so hard not to let her see him for who he really was.
But she didn’t shy away from him when she finds out! She goes out of her way to help him.
I loved the character development for both Nora and Astar. There bond is so special!

This book is such an easy read. Flows beautifully and is very descriptive.

The plot was fantastic! Fast paced towards the end and boy that ending got me! I had no idea. 🤯

Absolutely love a dual POV book.

Highly recommend this one!

Thank you for the ARC copy.

You'll love this book if you are looking for a magical college setting, the FMC has blood powers, the MMC is a half demon! There is myth, folklore, hidden realms, rune magic, student rivalry and touch her and die vibes.

The story centres around Nora and Astar who are partners at Sunlark magical college. Nora has rune magic and Astar is a half demon with fire magic.

Together they hunt monsters and as the assignments grow deadlier and deadlier, their friendship deepens and they learn to trust and depend on each other.

Another rival partner team consisting of Jean and Mira try to beat them on the leadership board. But the true danger is the power awakening inside Nora and Astar that could destroy them both.

Their are twists at the end that I didn't even see coming but make complete sense. This book was such a page turner I couldn't put it down and needed to know how it ended! I absolutely can't wait for the next instalment and didn't even realise this was a YA book. The writing style is very well developed and I look forward to reading more in the future from @andrea.m.dean.

Thank you to the author, @andrea.m.dean, and @haylingbookstormltd for the advanced reader copy. This is my honest review.

This is a great story. We follow Nora and Astar as they navigate school, monsters, and finding a way to make peace with their past.

I was hooked from the very first page and could not put it down. I finished it a few days ago, and I’m still thinking about it.

The pacing is excellent. It takes the time to fully introduce the world but it never feels slow or dull. The writing is propulsive, intriguing, and dynamic, pulling you deeper into the story with each chapter.

One of the most compelling elements is the contrast in how the main characters approach their legacy. One embraces her blood power and affinity for runes, while the other fights desperately to reject his own nature. The MMC is incredibly well-crafted, surrounded by power yet driven by a deep fear of rejection for who he truly is. That internal conflict made his character especially compelling to follow.

As the story evolved, I did not predict any of the twists and turns. The ending was really good. Leaving us with two students, answering some questions, but leaving many doors open.

Overall, a fantastic read with strong worldbuilding, complex characters, and an engaging narrative. I can’t wait to dive into the next book.

Burn by Andrea Dean is a YA story that follows Nora Albright (mmc) and Astar Taylor (mmc) as they navigate their 1st year of Sunlark College in the Occult Studies Program.

Blood powers FMC
Half-demon MMC
Unlikely allies
Occult & supernatural
Myth & folklore
Hidden realms
Rune magic
Vampires & demons
"Touch her and die" 💀
Student rivalry

Absolutely adored this book. Dual POV of Orphaned Legacy Nora and Half-demon Astar who become partners while completing assignment from the OSP. Navigating the ins and outs of hunting supernatural creatures while working to advance to the next level.

The 1st chapter immediately pulls you in. And what a thrilling ride. I could not put this book down.

Nora is constantly trying to prove she belongs and can live up to her famous last name and discovering the power of her blood. Astar is constantly battling his own inner voice and maintaining control of his demon half.

Will their partnership stand the trials they face??

I really liked this one! Nora and Astar are partners at an academy that basically trains student to hunt monsters. When an assignment goes wrong, Nora works hard to learn more about runes to help with her control over her power. What she doesn't realize that everything is about to change, and she has no clue what that will mean.

Astar has been supressing his demon side for as long as he can remember, and his greatest worry is that he will hurt people; hurt Nora. He can't stomach the possibility, but he keeps trying to gain control the best he can. When he and Nora are both put in danger by someone I did not see coming, their lives are put into the hands of someone who doesn't care for them to live.

The pacing on this story is absolutely insane. I could not put it down. Didn't want to do real life. I spent every second devouring this book. From the beginning, I was hooked. An accident happens to Nora right away and its intense. Then theres also Astar's pov. Both characters are extremely well developed even from the start. I cared about Nora because of the side characters surrounding her. She's intresting and such a bad ass. Astar is awesome but I will always love a strong female character. The plot? Perfection. Characters? Exquisite. Everything in between? No notes. I love everything about this book and definitely cant wait for the next one!!!

Thank you to Andrea Dean for the ARC Review of Burn!

I don’t typically gravitate toward YA, but Burn completely surprised me...in the best way! Set in a paranormal academy (which is always a win), the story kicks off strong and never really lets go. I was hooked from the beginning and stayed fully invested the entire time.

Nora and Alstar’s dynamic was a standout for me. Their partnership felt genuine and well-developed without slipping into anything cheesy. There’s a natural chemistry there that makes you root for them as allies navigating everything thrown their way.

The world-building struck a great balance, rich enough to immerse you in the story without overwhelming you. I felt like I was right there alongside Nora and Alstar, experiencing the Sunlark College and its secrets firsthand. The characters and storyline felt grounded and believable, which made the stakes hit even harder.

While the ending isn’t a dramatic cliffhanger, it leaves just enough to make it clear there’s much more to come and I’m definitely eager for book two.

Thank you so much to Andrea Dean for the ARC. I feel very lucky!

I loved the book !!! It completely took me by surprise in the best way. The main characters were such a highlight, especially their relationship, easily my favorite part of the book. The dual POV really added depth.

The concept was fun and a world with monsters has so much potential for future creepy adventures!

I was given this as an ARC and it is exactly what I wanted. The romantasy genre is done right here…the main characters are both interesting and I love switching POVs. Astar was by far my favorite…I love a tortured male lead. The chemistry was perfect. But really my favorite part was this world that Andrea Dean created. The school, the missions, the teachers and students and the monsters just all wove together to feel so real. Love the concept of doors. Truly recommend!

Burn by Andrea Dean — 3.5 ⭐️

TLDR:

Strong concept, but uneven execution.

The synopsis hooked me right away, but the first half was a struggle. The structure made it hard to stay grounded and connect emotionally early on. I also found certain moments a bit disruptive to the flow.

That said, around the halfway mark things started to click, and by 80% I was fully invested. The pay off is there, I just wish it didn’t take so long to get there.

Overall, I’m glad I stuck with it, and I’ll be continuing with book two.

Full ARC review:

This was not a bad book by any means, but I truly feel it could have been so much more.

As an ARC read, this book really took me on a journey. The synopsis immediately pulled me in, and I went in excited. Then came the uncertainty. For a while, I wasn’t sure if I was enjoying it, but I’m someone who likes to finish what I start, so I pushed through. Around the 40% mark, something shifted. I found myself genuinely curious and wanting to continue rather than feeling obligated. By 80%, I was fully invested, on the edge of my seat and completely locked in.

It took me a bit to pinpoint my main issue, but ultimately, it came down to the structure.

At the beginning, I found myself repeatedly going back to reread sections because I couldn’t clearly tell whether the story was written in first-person or third-person POV. It is first-person, which I typically prefer, but the execution made it feel unclear. The book uses a dual POV where each character is essentially telling the other person’s story while still maintaining first-person narration. It’s an interesting concept, but for me, it disrupted the flow, made it difficult to settle into the story early on, and ultimately weakened what could have been a strong emotional connection to the characters. I gravitate toward first-person because I want to feel like I am the character. I want to experience everything alongside them. This approach created a sense of distance instead, leaving me disconnected and wanting something different.

The second structural challenge I noticed was what I started calling “reader catch-up moments.” These weren’t quite flashbacks, but more like brief insertions of “this happened” delivered in a semi-conversational way. While I understand the intent, they felt a bit unnatural and pulled me out of the immersion at times.

That said…the bones of this story are absolutely there. The world has potential, and the characters do develop a strong presence… it just took longer than I would have liked to fully feel it. For me, that again ties back to the structure slowing down that initial connection.

I do worry that some readers may DNF this before it finds its stride, which would be unfortunate, because if you stick with it, there is a payoff. By the end, I was rewarded with character development and a deeper sense of the world.

When I review, I tend to focus on three main things: world-building, character development, and emotional connection. I did get all three here…but not until much later in the story.

With some structural refinement, I genuinely think this could be a standout hit.

Overall, I’m glad I stuck with it, and I will be continuing on with book two.

“‘What if I told you that monsters are real?’"

Burn by Andrea Dean wasted no time scorching a path straight into my heart where I know those last few chapters are going to linger for the foreseeable future.

Burn follows two student teammates - Nora, a legacy who wields rune magic, and Astar, a powerful fire-wielding half human demon - in the Occult Studies Program at a prestigious academy for monster hunters-in-training.

If the blurb alone doesn't convince you of the kind of thrill-ride you're in for with this book, the first chapter will, as the reader is immediately dropped straight into the action during one of Nora and Astar's deadly hunts.

This academy (a secret to the outside modern world that believes monsters are only myth) fascinated me from the beginning, and the author carefully weaves in detail about the world and its history in a way that feels natural and not overwhelming. The lectures, professors and lessons about the monsters truly feel academic, and it was like I was a student learning right alongside those in the classroom.

The characters are vibrant and memorable. I was thoroughly intrigued by one side character Mira, the nonverbal ghost-like girl with extraordinary power. I hope we get to learn more about her background in future books.

But besides the action-packed monster hunts themselves, the truly memorable parts of this book have to do with the budding relationship between Nora and Astar and their individual struggles learning to accept themselves, trust one another and to control their own power.

Nora is a likable, empathetic and relatable main female character, while Astar is everything a reader of the fantasy romance genre (though this is YA fantasy) might long for in a main male character - dark, broody, loyal, a bit morally gray, controlled, quietly powerful and mysterious. This book is dual POV and, though I enjoyed Nora, it was Astar whose character really drew me into this story as he battled with his demon half to hold onto his humanity, and I just wanted more, more, MORE Astar!

Though there is no romance in this book, I could sense the growing potential between Astar and Nora with their already deeply meaningful friendship, and my little romantasy-loving heart can't help but long for them to hopefully find their way to love in future books!

This book kept giving me Buffy the Vampire Slayer vibes, with notes of The Witcher tossed in. I’m usually good at predicting endings and, though I had some suspicions, this is one that slightly blindsided me.

This writing style is smooth, well-plotted and never once felt rushed. I have absolutely no criticisms except that I need MORE of this world and these characters!

Thank you to the author and Hayling Bookstorm Ltd. for sharing an advanced reader copy of this book with me. This review is my honest opinion, and I'm leaving it voluntarily.

ARC Review: Burn

If you’ve been looking for a story that captures the magical school aesthetic but injects it with real danger, rune-based blood magic, and a romance that feels like a fever dream, Burn is it. This isn't just "Dark Harry Potter" - it’s a grittier, more unforgiving world where survival is a privilege, not a guarantee.

The FMC: Nora
Nora Albright is AMAZING. She carries the same quiet, steel-spined determination that makes Katniss Everdeen so iconic, but with a sharper, more dangerous edge. Watching her navigate the weight of her parents' legacy while discovering her own "undiluted" power was incredibly satisfying.
What truly sets her apart from the typical "chosen one" is her moral compass. Most protagonists are defined by their selflessness and their desire to save the world at any cost. Nora is different. There is a chilling, beautiful darkness to her loyalty: She isn't the hero who sacrifices her heart to save the world; she is the one who would stand amidst the embers and let the entire world burn if it meant keeping the person she loves alive.

The MMC: Astar
Astar has officially made me fall in love with him in about 10 pages or so. As a half-demon who has spent his life trying to be invisible, his devotion to Nora is the heartbeat of this book. He is the ultimate "yearner" - the way he watches her, protects her, and looms over her enemies is pure perfection.
The best part of their dynamic?Astar doesn't step in because he thinks Nora is weak; he knows exactly how capable she is. He steps in because he wants to handle the world for her. It’s a protective energy that never feels patronizing, only devoted.

The world of Sunlark College feels lived-in and terrifying. The rune magic system is so vivid that I could practically see the ink and blood on the page - I am desperately hoping for a special edition with illustrations of those rune circles!

The side characters also stole my heart:
Jean and Mira: Their presence made the OSP feel like a true community. I’m already hungry for more of Mira’s backstory in future installments.
Taylor: Every dark fantasy needs that "cool aunt" energy, and Taylor delivers it perfectly, providing a much-needed anchor in a world of monsters and fallen angels.

The Plot and Dual POV
I’m usually not a fan of Dual POVs, but it was the only way to tell this story. Seeing the world through Astar’s reserved, watchful eyes compared to Nora’s determined perspective added so much depth to the tension.
And that plot twist? It was masterful. There was a nagging feeling in the back of my mind throughout the book, a trail of breadcrumbs so subtle I wasn't sure they were there. When the reveal finally happened, everything clicked into place. It’s the kind of ending that makes you want to restart the book immediately just to see the foreshadowing you missed.

There was something about this book that had me hooked from the very first chapter, and that is rare for me. I had seen multiple ARC readers rave about it and give it high ratings, which actually made me a bit nervous since I prefer going in blind and without overly high expectations. But from page one, I was completely pulled in.

The world building is incredible. The plot is gripping. A private school with an occult program is already such a strong and atmospheric setting, and it absolutely delivers. It gave me strong Shadowhunters vibes with the monster hunting and the overall tone, which I loved.

And let me tell you about the MMC. Astar Taylor is officially a new favorite MMC of mine.
I genuinely feel protective over him. It is so refreshing to read about a more reserved and quiet male lead who is still deeply protective of the female main character. That combination works so well, and it feels different in the best way.

I also got strong The Dark Artifices vibes, and I want to be clear that I mean vibes, not similarities in story. The runes, the bond between the main characters, the monster hunting all echo that same feeling. But the story itself is entirely its own. If you loved The Dark Artifices, there is a very good chance you will love this too. The author’s writing is beautiful, and I found myself highlighting so many passages.

The side characters are just as interesting, and I already feel invested in them. I am really excited to see more of them in future books. One character in particular stood out to me, especially with her mysterious past and the way it seems to have shaped her into someone both guarded and quietly formidable. She has this observant, watchful presence that I found really intriguing, and I would honestly love to get her POV at some point.

While the male main character completely stole my heart, I also really liked the female main character. She is open, honest, communicative, and actually asks questions. She feels reasonable and vulnerable, which means there is very little frustrating miscommunication, and I appreciated that so much.

And the connection between the main character, I absolutely loved it. It feels genuine, soft, and deeply protective on both sides. There is something very special about their bond, and it made the story even stronger.

The author’s writing is simply beautiful, and the way the world is built makes every scene engaging. Even during the lessons, I was completely invested and felt like I was learning alongside the characters.

So, Andrea Dean, can I just open a tab with you and have all your future books automatically delivered to me? Because I am fully invested!

This was such a devourable read for me. I love the overall vibes. This is such a strong debut novel that I’m so excited to read more from Andrea Dean!

In the Occult Studies program at Sunlark College, students pair up to slay monsters in secret realms. A brilliant and powerful orphan and a half demon outcast must survive the deadly OSP. In order to make full points on an assignment, both partners must pull their weight — and the assignments can be deadly. Tasked with killing various supernatural creatures, the more dangerous, the higher the point value.

Nora is the orphaned daughter of renowned occult researchers. It can be hard living up to your family name, and some rise to the occasion and others ride on the coattails of prestige. Nora is hard working and driven, trying to become the first partnered pair to earn a place into the adept class. She’s a likable, badass FMC! She partners with Asher who is a half-demon, half-human. Deadly with fire, he has her back against any monster they encounter but internally wars against his demon within, terrified about losing his humanity. Asher feels like such an innocent and you can’t help but rooting for her. They have a great friendship but has some low key touch her and burn type of vibes. This is the slooowest of slowburn friends to lovers romance, with no spice in book 1 and the spice will remain closed door as the story progresses in the trilogy

I love Nora’s antagonistic relationship with Jean. Conflict is important for plot progression and honestly feels necessary for academia type tropes. I love his character arc throughout the book and his softer side with Mira. I hope to see more of them, especially Mira’s ghost powers. She’s gonna be a strong secondary character and potential bff material!

Then there’s Jude. He appears out of literally nowhere, an upper level student from the competing occult school. Your spidey senses say don’t trust him but you also love the kinship and easy banter he has with Nora. They just seem to understand each other. You wonder could there more 😏🫣

Definitely fits upper level YA with the gore/fighting content but there’s no spice.

Thank you so much Andi & Hayling Bookstorm Ltd. for the opportunity to read an advance reader copy!

ARC Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you so much to the author for the chance to read an ARC of this book in exchange of an honest review.

I absolutely loved this book & was completely sucked into & obsessed with the delightful fantasy world of Sunlark College's Occult Studies Program.
I loved the dual POV chapters, it worked so well and had me devouring chapter after chapter.

Nora Albright (MFC) & Astar Taylor (MMC)are both instant lovable characters.
Their relationship is completely soul warming, they have such a strong bond & both bring out the best in each other. I also love their banter it is spot on.
Following their journey to trusting each other & depending on each other just makes you love them more & more.

Jean & Mira, another excellent & unique relationship.
I loved seeing how they work together & their bond felt super special. I’m excited to see what Mira is capable of in future book(s).

The rivalry between Nora & Jean adds depth to both their characters. It makes perfect sense why they don't get on as they are very similarly driven but I think if they can get past that they would be epic allies.

I love that in the OSP program each partner has to do their fair share on assignments.
So, they CAN'T rely on solely on their partner to carry them through.
They can help each other, support & encourage each other of course but both must be equally involved in each assignment to gain points & progress.
I think this is really important in this story as if not it would be easy to think some students were only successful due to their partner.

The ‘Monsters’ in this book were awesome & well written & were detailed enough to imagine but not so detailed it pulls you from the action.
The ‘Monster’ battles were excellent & full of excitement & plenty of drama.

Side characters were also very well developed & intriguing.
Ms Taylor, Professor Hawthorne, Jude, Director Vero, Hiro & Chloe to name a few added a lot of depth, extra mystery & excitement throughout the book & hopefully we will learn more about some of them in future books.

I’m also excited/hopeful to learn more about the sister College Moondark in future books, plenty of scope for more characters & I’m intrigued in how the program varies with its solo students.

In short I loved the book & can’t wait for more. Highly recommend this book to everyone but if you love fantasy this is a must ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Some books simply entertain you while reading, and others stay with you long after you turn the final page. Burn by Andrea Dean is absolutely one of those books. It’s the kind of story that quietly finds its way into your heart and remains there.♥️

From the very first pages, I was drawn in by the smooth and effortless writing style. The story flows naturally, making it easy to get lost in the world Andrea Dean created. It never feels forced or rushed…everything unfolds in a way that keeps you turning the pages while becoming more emotionally invested with each chapter.

One of the biggest strengths of this book is its characters. They feel vivid, real, and incredibly easy to care about. Nora is a character you genuinely want to follow, and her journey feels meaningful from start to finish. But for me, Astar completely stole the show. Astar is such a joy to read charming, memorable, and such a kind personality. Every scene with Astar brought something special to the story, and I found myself looking forward to every moment on the page.

While this is not a spicy romance, the bond between Nora and Astar is one of the most beautiful parts of the book.
Their connection is written with so much care and depth that it becomes the emotional heart of the story. It feels unique, genuine, and deeply moving. Relationships like this remind you that a book does not need romance to create powerful emotional impact.

Another thing that stood out to me was how much love, time, and dedication the author clearly poured into this story. You can feel it in the details, the pacing, the character development, and the emotional layers woven throughout the book. It’s clear this story was crafted with intention, and that makes the reading experience even more special.

I’ll admit that at first I wondered if I would miss spice or romantic elements, but Burn proves that a strong story with compelling characters and meaningful relationships can be far more impactful.
It offers emotion, connection, and heart in all the right ways.♥️

I would highly recommend this book to readers who love character-driven stories, emotional connections, unforgettable characters, and books that stay with you long after they are finished. But is definitely one to keep your eye on!!

Thank you to Hayling Bookstorm and Andrea Dean for the opportunity to review. All opinions are my own.

Set within the shadowy halls of Sunlark College, Burn follows Nora Albright, heir to a legacy of legendary monster hunters, and Astar, a half demon trying to keep a low profile. On paper, they should not work. In practice, they are one of the strongest Initiate teams in the Occult Studies Program. Between lectures on creatures lurking beyond the veil and real world missions to hunt them down, their partnership is constantly tested, and things do not always go as planned.

This was such an entertaining read even though I am not typically a YA reader. I found myself reaching for it whenever I had a spare moment, completely pulled into its world. It gave me strong Shadowhunters energy, but with a more academic dark academia twist that I really enjoyed. There is a great balance of action, tension, and character driven moments, friendships, rivalries, and just enough humor to keep things from getting too heavy.

One of my favorite elements was the dynamic between Nora and Astar. Their bond feels like the emotional core of the story, grounding all the supernatural chaos in something real and compelling. The setting also deserves a shoutout. The occult studies program is such a fun concept, and the atmosphere is immersive without feeling overdone.

That said, I did go in expecting something slightly different. The title and cover gave me the impression there might be a stronger romantic element, but the story leans much more into friendship and gradual character development. That is not a bad thing at all, just something to keep in mind depending on what you are looking for. If you’re yearning for dark academia SPICE, this really isn’t one I would pick up.

The pacing starts a bit slow, but once it picks up, it really picks up. And that ending? It absolutely left me reeling and wanting more. Like now. Gimme gimme.

Overall, I really enjoyed this and would definitely recommend it to fans of dark academia and character focused fantasy. YA isn’t usually something I pick up, but it is still a solid, engaging read, and I am very curious to see where the story goes next.

ARC Review

If I could rate this 6 stars I would! This had everything I love in a fantasy book; dark academia, friends/enemies to lovers, solid world building, exceptional dialogue and multiple POV’s. The multi-POV was excellently constructed, you got a really good insight on the characters thought processes, emotions and viewpoints as the story progressed. I also love the witty banter between the FMC & MMC. The magic system was pulled from previous magics people are familiar with; monsters, fire magic, ability to summon and create, but also included intricate magic such as rune studies and rune circles to extrapolate on the magic used. It was a comforting system that will make any reader immediately understand it. Of course a good assortment of monsters like vampires, furies, golems, demons etc, and some with a new twist.

The dark academia setting between the sister school Sunlark and Moondark and their different ideologies was interesting and lead to intrigue and betrayal. A few twists and turns, some predictable but others you would not see coming, and literally blew me away!

There was also a fair amount of yearning that progressed throughout the book which will make you absolutely fall in love with the MMC Astar! He’s protective, he actually listens to the FMC, wants to know how she’s feeling, he cares, and has emotional range which is so refreshing

This is technically a YA fantasy, zero smut or steamy moments, but the way it was written didn’t give you that young adult vibe it didn’t have that crude juvenile nonsense on the page some have which immediately turns me off. The dialogue was so well thought out and executed it literally pulled you right in and you really start to understand the complexities of the characters and get to know their motives, their reactions, and really get into their headspace.

Finally, I absolutely cherished the adoptive parents relationship that was depicted in this novel. It was so beautiful and gave you all the feels.

Overall the vibes of this book, the setting and the aesthetic was top tier

⭐️⭐️⭐️️⭐️/ ️🌶️

Let me introduce you to Andrea Dean, debut author whose debut novel left me salivating for more of this author. Burn will pull you into a world of occult magic, where the line between myth and reality blurs, and legacies are discovered. Andrea not only pulls readers in with her amazing characters, but her talent in painting vivid and descriptive imagery allows one to easily imagine themselves in the book. Non living places are brought to life, almost becoming characters of their own.

Nora is a character that will resonate with young girls. She is strong, resilient, and determined. Having just lost her parents, she comes to Sunlark College, but isn’t ready for what she will learn about herself and her legacy. She has traits that I would love to see my own daughter grow up to have and love that she never acted like a damsel in distress. If she needed help she asked for it, but was willing to fight for what she wanted on her own.

Astar tries harder to stay under the radar. His half human, half demon existence isn’t always well received, so he hides it away as much as possible. Yet, something draws him to Nora and the desire to share his whole self with her becomes too strong to ignore. His vulnerability with Nora throughout this story makes him hard to not fall for. The dynamic written between these two is so well done, with their friendship (maybe more) being the center of this story.

I am so happy I was able to discover Andrea and at the start of her writing career. Her first book is intriguing, captivating, and vivid. She wrote an excellent book and I am hopeful to see more of this universe from her. Definitely don’t let the fact that this is YA and no/low spice deter you from reading it. It is a wonderful book that will leave you wanting, no needing, more.

As always, review any author notes before reading.

What to Expect:

🖤Half Demon MMC

The quickest and easiest 5 Star ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I’ve ever Entered !!!! 👏🏼👏🏼🥰

This book was an immediate 5 stars for me upon finishing it. I Had the honor of being able to read it as ARC reader & as it was my very first ARC. It did take me a little while longer to finish *(bc single mom of 3 & work a full time job)* BUT i CANNOT be more grateful and thankful to the author Andi for allowing me to read her amazing work ! So Thank you for sharing your amazing story with me ! I loved it 🥰 Now into the review ….

Burn is a YA Fantasy Novel which is normally not my usual go to thing ! HOWEVER WOW JUST WOW , the writing in this is amazing- the descriptions and world building , magic systems are all just ….chefs kiss 😘 without over doing it and taking over the story , I don’t always read a book to where I’m immediately sucked into the story or feel as if i’m there in the settings with the characters , and Andi does this effortlessly from start to finish - which I absolutely love ! We follow our Main Characters Nora , and Astar - I loved them equally their relationship / dynamic was just powerful and beautiful to follow their journey and the way they supported each other as partners and as friends , they are at Sunlark College , in the Occult studies Program and their training consists of classes as well as going into doors and Defeating different Monsters , and supernatural beings. They are scored on a point system and both partners must carry the same amount of weight! As the school year goes on they both really grow individually and must learn to harness and understand the powers within them as a team and both separately- which may have its own challenges!

I don’t want to give away to much but this is a must read , and i absolutely cannot wait for the next book in the series !!! If you love Fantasy , magic , the occult , runes , Demons, Vampires, ghosts etc … you will love this book !!! 2027 cannot get here fast enough , I’ll be looking forward to jump back into Nora & Astar’s world again!!!

OMG WOW WOW WOW!!! Where do I began this review. This was the most amazing YA Fantasy book I have read in a long while. Now I will be honest When i read the blurb and the it said, "The true danger isn't what lurks in the dark—it's the power awakening inside them that could destroy them both." I knew it was going to be a wild ride.
I like how the book grabs you tight and holds you tight until the very end.
MY REVIEW MAY HAVE SOME SPOILERS, SO IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO KNOW PLEASE SCROLL PAST. THANK YOU SO MUCH. ALSO THANK YOU ANDREA DEAN FOR THE CHANCE TO ADVANCDE READ YOUR BOOK IT WAS AMAZING.

Now Nora is an amazing character. Nora, is the orphaned daughter of two well-known figures, and she’s determined to prove she belongs there for who she is, not just her name. Boy when she finds out the truth she has a no fear mentality and rolls with it. Then Nora gets her partner in the program Astar.
Nora and Astar both attend OSP together. I love how they become partners and work amazing together. I do love how they both pull there weight and balance each other well. They both become very strong together which is amazing. Which Astar helps her balance out.
Now Astar was my absolute favorite character he is so sweet, timid, reserved, and is always hiding in the shadows. He is half demon and is always scared of that side of him. He is scared that side will devour him and strip him of all his humanity. But Nora helped him overcome and learn to control like he did Nora.
Overall, I loved how the story had so many different mythological and folklore creatures in the story that Nora and Astar had to handle. I loved how the world was built up in the book. The way it was written was like i could picture it in my head as I read. I loved absolutely everything about this book. I hope and pray we get more of this because I'm hooked now. I wanna see where things go from here. Thank you again Andrea this was fantastic and I was honored.

This book didn’t just grab me—it dragged me into the dark, handed me a blade, and said survive. From the first page, Burn feels like stepping into a blood-inked syllabus where failure isn’t an option and survival is the only passing grade. Sunlark’s Occult Studies Program is brutal in the best way—think academic pressure… but your final exam might actually kill you.
Nora Albright is the kind of FMC I live for: grieving, determined, and quietly unraveling as something powerful and dangerous wakes up inside her. Her journey hits that perfect sweet spot between strength and vulnerability, where every victory feels earned and every mistake costs something real.
And Astar? Listen. The “quiet, half-demon, don’t-look-at-me” energy? Absolutely lethal. He’s restrained chaos wrapped in shadows, and the slow-burn connection between him and Nora is thick with tension, trust, and just enough danger to keep your heart racing. Their dynamic feels like standing too close to a storm—you know it could ruin you, but you’re not stepping back.
The worldbuilding is rich without being overwhelming—vampires, golems, fallen angels—all woven into a system that feels structured but constantly on the verge of collapse. Every assignment raises the stakes, and the sense of dread builds like a drumbeat you can’t ignore.
But what really seals this as a 5-star read is the underlying theme: power. Not the shiny, heroic kind—but the raw, unstable, might-destroy-you kind. Watching Nora and Astar wrestle with what’s inside them is just as gripping as any monster they face.
Final verdict: Dark academia with teeth, morally gray tension, and a romance that simmers under layers of danger and restraint. If you like your fantasy a little deadly and your characters a little haunted, this one will absolutely own you.
