Book Review: #AvastAirships An Interesting Anthology Of Tales On Steampunk, Airships And Pirates

Avast, Ye Airships edited by Rie Sheridan Rose is an interesting collection of 18 fiction tales in 312 pages. The variety of stories in this anthology keeps it interesting. There is no fixed length of each and hence you can select as per your choice without bothering to read them in the same sequence as they are presented. Probably each story will connect with you somewhere or the other and you will be thinking of exploring more work from these authors.

You will find every color of life in these stories. There is melodrama, fight, fun, intense drama, fight, violence, romance, love, and fairytale. But there is a common connect in all these stories – airships, pirates, and steampunk. In that manner, this could be termed as a classic anthology of steampunk. All the stories are about pirates. The theme has been well preserved in all the tales. You will find all kind of pirates in these tales ranging from young to old, aspiring to pro, fresh to retiring, rookie to expert. Go on, grab the book Avast, Ye Airships edited by Rie Sheridan Rose and enjoy the interesting stories. In fact to be on a lighter note, you will start loving pirates, and maybe start thinking of becoming one. If that be the case, choose the best one of your choice presented among these stories.

I loved reading all the tales but a special note for these five tales – The Climbers by D Chang, Lost Sky by Amy Braun, Hooked by Rie Sheridan Rose, Lotus of Albion by Steve Ruskin and A Clouded Affair by Steven Southard. Other tales are no less than any of these. Avast, Ye Airships edited by Rie Sheridan Rose is a must read for anyone having an interest in steampunk, adventure, fiction, fun, short stories, sci-fi etc.

This is a collection of 18 short stories with a whole host of airships, pirates and all other manor of weird and wonderful steampunk gadgets.

Now I am not really into the steampunk genre as I just really don’t understand it, but after reading this collection of stories I realise that I have been missing out an a pretty great genre.

It is hard to pick a favourite out of the collection but I really enjoyed the first story “Beneath the Brass” if I had not enjoyed that, I think I would have found it hard to continue with the rest. In this one we meet a woman who has been put in an asylum for daring to say her brother raped her. She is rescued with the rest of the asylum into the world of mechanical wonders. But turns out that her brother is after her. This was great story and a good one for me to read first.

Overall I enjoyed the whole collection and whilst I was a little worried that they would all be same I was very wrong as there is story for everything – airships, pirates and even aliens!

Avast! - What a Great Read!

I am lucky enough to have an Advance Reader Copy (ARC) of this wonderful anthology. Once I started reading, I couldn’t stop. The stories kept me wanting more. Once a story ended, I had to see if the next writer could keep up. I was not disappointed.

Are you looking for variety? This anthology has that. Is time a problem? Not with this book. The stories vary in length, and you do not have to read it in order. You can get a quick fix or plan a “just me” night reading to your heart’s content.

I am truly stunned at the quality of work put into this volume. Some of these authors I will definitely be seeking more of their works.

I was worried, at first, if the stories would all be exactly the same. Not so! There are alien invasions. There are Victorian settings. There are pirates, airships, and adventure galore. There are eighteen stories that will definitely keep you entertained.

This is one book that is certainly worth the money.

Great collection of steampunk short stories! Unique adventure, pirates of all kinds, and all kinds of strange gizmos! My top favorites were "Beneath The Brass" by Stephen Blake, a diary of a traumatized woman looking for adventure and finding some betrayal, "The Clockwork Dragon" by Steve Cook, a story of betrayal and revenge, and "Lotus of Albion" by Steve Ruskin, the tale of romance... and betrayal. While there were a couple stories that I was scratching my head at, most of them were fun and exciting. I won't comment on my own ("Lost Sky"), though I do hope readers enjoy the diversity of the book. I certainly did!

Avast, Ye Airships! is a wonderful little gem of steampunk airship fantasy. All of the stories in it are well-written and intriguing. While they all have the same premise, a steampunk story set on an airship, each author contributes a story that is completely original and different from the others. While some are more “traditional” steampunk (Victorian England), there are others that are romance, adventure, scifi, horror, and even Southern steampunk. The stories are varied in length and style.

My personal top five were “Maiden Voyage,” in which a lesbian couple must outwit the pirates seizing their ship, “Captain Wexford’s Dilemma,” in which a captain suddenly finds her airship has been possessed by ghosts after mooring near a cemetery, “Hooked,” in which a young lady, on her first airship adventure, finds the ship under attack by a dashing rogue, “A Steampunk Garden,” in which a clever mechanic must outwit her captors, and “Lotus of Albion,” in which an airship captain falls for a beautiful woman .

What I really appreciated was the careful attention to diversity. The stories in this book included people of color, queer characters, those with disabilities, and strong female characters. This one is well-worth the read.

A fun collection of short stories involving airships and blimps across several different genres. Horror, adventure, romance, sci-fi, and more. Pretty solid stories, the only problem I have with this anthology was that most of the female characters are too similar. This was easy to overlook because I liked the stories and I haven't read anything steampunk or clockpunk in awhile, but I did notice it. If you like plucky female characters who love pirates, machines, and steam engines then this is for you.
