I didn’t just read this. I consumed it. This is the kind of book that rewires your brain while you’re reading it. The tension? Unbearable in the best way. Making you SQUIRM. The spice? Perfectly done. But what really got me was the way this story played me. I was so sure I knew what was happening… and I was so wrong. I felt every twist, every shift, every moment of betrayal like it was happening to me. I haven’t felt this way about a book in a long time. And that ending? Absolutely unforgettable. Starting book two immediately because there is no other option.
Infinity stars. No notes. Just vibes and a little emotional damage.
This book is not soft. It’s sharp, addictive, and full of that “this is a bad idea… do it anyway” energy from the very first page.
The vibe? Rot, power, and inevitability. Everything feels slightly decayed in a way that makes it more dangerous, not less. The world is gritty and lived-in, like something beautiful that’s been left too long and turned into something darker.
The characters are messy in the best way. No clean choices. No easy paths. Every decision feels layered with consequence, and you’re right there with them, understanding it even when you probably shouldn’t.
The MMC carries this quiet, controlled presence that feels like he already knows how things end. There’s a hunger under the surface that you can’t ignore. And the FMC is not here to be saved. She’s navigating impossible choices, standing in the middle of it all, and paying for every step forward.
Their dynamic is where it really locks you in. Tension, power, resentment, pull… that constant undercurrent of “this won’t end well” but you don’t want it to. It just keeps tightening the deeper you go.
The writing hits that perfect balance. Dark and immersive without being heavy. And there are lines that just sit with you after you read them.
If you like: dark fantasy romance that actually commits morally gray everything tension that feels like a slow tightening noose and stories that feel a little bit dangerous
you’ll eat this up.
Just don’t expect to come out untouched. This one leans into the rot… and makes you love it anyway!
Contents: Gross 🤗 like do not even think about having a cute snack plate with this read ✨💀 Yeah the amount of rot, death and maggots was BLOODY DISTURBING.… but it’s so necessary for the plot so just trust…haaa
I don’t even want to leave a long review bc I don’t want to spoil ONE BIT. This is the type of book where the plot just keeps slowly unraveling and keeps you guessing until the very end! I seriously enjoyed this a lot!!!! I love being tortured about which man is end game 🤭
Who do we even trust now!!??? What is happening!!? Book 2 is open as we speak🔥
˖⁺‧₊♡ pre-read review ⋙ liv zander is one of my favourite authors of all things dark and fantasy; of horrific twists and villainous characters. a gravedigger. a kingdom consumed by rot. i have not felt this excited to read a book in such a long time. consider me consumed.
Liv Zander's prose is as captivating as always. It should be no surprise I had to finish this within a day. I'm both eager to read the conclusion and feeling spoiled that it's just around the corner.
The Queen writes again!! Prepare yourselves! This is her best ride yet! 5/5 story, 5/5 romance, 5/5 ick…So. Many. Maggots. 😬 Elara might just be the strongest FMC I’ve ever read. She’s not weak in any sense, body/mind/spirit/heart-i feel it’s especially important to note the last. She lives in a world where rot takes everything and everyone. Including her little brother’s fingers. But she finds a way to make light in the dark, bringing humor to the family gravedigging business-always keeping him laughing. She keeps that same spunk throughout the story, even after her entire reality is upended as she tries to unravel cold truths from slippery lies. As if that’s not enough, we’ve got an unexpected love triangle with 2 men who love to hide everything in the dark, including themselves. Elara must figure out a way to end the rot if she wants to save what’s most precious to her, as well as the rest of the realm. No pressure.
An alluring mysterious stranger approaches Elara with a deal she just can’t refuse. Win over the undying king that never emerges from the castle. And he makes it sound so easy. But the king isn’t so approachable, he might be undying but he’s a massive jerk with rage problems. Is there someone worth saving under all of that? He doesn’t make it easy, never wanting company. As she tries to unravel the mysterious king, she upends a deeper, darker secret. One that might lead down a different path to end the rot forever. But, the alluring stranger that offered her the deal is still lurking around. He’s so handsome and is the only one willing to help Elara. Is he the key to ending the cursed rot? She can’t let her heart get in the way of what must be done. As a gravedigger, she’s not squeamish with death and she’s not about to start running from it now.
Prepare your reading area. Maybe no snacks, seriously 5/5 ick factor, and lots of tissues. Settle in to buckle up for Liv’s most beautiful ride yet! I’ve been lucky enough to receive ARCS for both books in the duology and finished both in 4 days. Could not put it down!! She’s incorporated a mystery so thick in the plot, you just can’t stop reading until you know what’s the truth! It’s gross, tragic, and so very beautiful.
Amazing work, Liv! I didn’t know quite what to expect, but as always you never disappoint! Elara is hands down my favorite FMC. Thank you for all the emotional damage I asked for, delivered masterfully ❤️
I had my nails literally in my teeth, biting them at the end of every chapter. At first, yeah — I was riding through the chapters... spice and tension... _muah🔥🔥💋💋_... the story making sense. Elara finding clues, and so was I.
And then... plot twist. My whole brain chemistry got fucked up. I was like, _what the hell_? I was literally in Elara's shoes. I had no sense of whether to trust Vale or the Prince. I had questions.
Now, at the end of the book, I have _more_ questions and no answers. I actually need time to digest this one hell of a ride. 😭😭😭
Vale... you bad, bad man. You manipulative man. Hate you... but I’ll ship you with Elara anyways.🤧🤧🤧.....
This was so surreal, it's totally unique, so very weird and such a vibe. I can always rely on this author to deliver something truly distinct. At times the descriptive prose here was downright gross but I was still transfixed and this was simply unputdownable.
We follow Elara a gravedigger living with her family this is all set against a rotting decaying landscape and this describes it all in excruciating intricate detail. Her father is dying and her brother is slowly decaying. Elara and her mother are the only things currently holding the family together. Approached by a well-dressed stranger who offers her a dilemma of a bargain Elara finds herself relocating to the palace to act as caretaker to a king. One who is plagued by a cruel curse that is currently strangling the kingdom.
Pulled between two opposing forces Elara doesn’t know who or what to believe. With secrets and scheming on all sides the only thing Elara is sure of is that she will do anything if it means her brother will get to live.
So yeah, safe to say this was a tad gross all of the vivid descriptions and painted visuals really wove a story. I was completely invested though and as we raced towards that endgame I was all in. I really enjoyed this one obviously it’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea but I do like the weird ones and this for sure was that. Loved where this went and though I did have my suspicions regarding certain characters It didn’t spoil or even change how invested I was. I will now be picking up book two immediately, especially considering how this one finished. I’ve tried to keep this review as vague as possible and hopefully I've succeeded but yeh this was a firm win.
First of all - SCREW YOU LIV!!! That CLIFFHANGER - WTF!
If I could fangirl any harder I'd be as hard as Death. Yeah. I said it. And I meant it. If you know, you KNOW. 💀
This book??? Unhinged. Rotting. Disgusting. Romantic. I am obsessed.
We've got: • a corpse-coded king • a shadow man who absolutely has ulterior motives and zero chill • and a gravedigger FMC who said "I'll play your game but I'll also bury you in it"
Elara is THAT girl. Covered in dirt, surrounded by decay, and still somehow the most emotionally stable one in the room. The bar is in hell. Literally. Convenient, since that's where this kingdom is headed.
And let's talk about the vibes: This world is not just dark... it's actively decomposing. Like you can smell this book. You're reading and suddenly you're like... do I have a gag reflex or am I just weak?? Because the maggots and pus were not a suggestion. They were a threat.
But then SOMEHOW you're also giggling, kicking your feet, twirling your hair because the tension?? The manipulation?? The "I might kill you but also I might kiss you" energy?? Absolutely feral.
The plot twists hit so fast I got whiplash. I stopped trying to predict anything and just let Liv drag me through the mud like the willing victim I am.
I was promised emotional devastation and yearning and instead I got crumbs and psychological warfare. This was more like: "Trust no one. Desire everyone. Regret everything."
Also Kael vs Vale??? I still don't know who I'd pick and that feels like a personal failure.
Final thoughts: • 10/10 vibes (if your vibe is decay and emotional instability) • slow burn so slow it's basically a threat • morally gray men doing morally gray things (as they should) • I am confused, disturbed, and deeply in love This book didn't just pull me in... it buried me and handed me a shovel.
And I'd climb back into that grave willingly for book 2.
This was entertaining but not really all that dark, to be honest. It had rather graphic imagery of the rot, but it was not dark like her Ravens duet.
I will say I knew who Vale was right off the bat. The twist was definitely not a twist because it was so obvious from the beginning, but I still had a good time. Reaaaally don't know where the story is going from here, so at least there's that element of suspense.
5 stars🌟… Just vibes and chills, no thoughts. Is this a dark romantasy with spice done right? Absolutely. That’s all for now. Until the second book review 😉
Gods, I swear Liv Zander can write absolute garbage and it would still turn out to be a masterpiece 🤌🏻✨
I love her writing style so much as it feels like it's matching my soul. We have such lyrical and poetic style, pairing it with dark and eerie settings, while also not forgetting the small wholesome and funny moments in-between, and if that isn't my whole personality, then idk what is.
Crown Me Dead is no different when it comes to all of this. The setting is so macabre and mysterious, and I loved it from the first page. The descriptions are done so well and so vivid that they just drop you off straight into the world. I would also say this book is not for people with weak stomachs as the world is literally decomposing and it can get quite disgusting at times (or you might be like me and find that very funny). It is also much lighter when it comes to the TW and the romance compared to her other books, but it's obv still best to check those before reading.
The plot starts out very simple and yet so strong - we've got rot consuming the whole kingdom, a curse on the crown that requires it to be fed by a sacrifice, a woman that needs to save her brother, and for her to do that she needs to seduce the king so that she can feed the crown. Literally so simple, and yet it's absolutely brilliant.
I love how all the characters are so messy and so imperfect, and we have no idea who to believe. My motto for this book was basically "do not trust anything or anyone". The beginning gave me lots of Beauty And The Beast vibes, except that instead of a beast we have a half-rotten king (literally). Little by little we start uncovering more mysteries regarding the curse and the royal family, and we also get quite a few plot twists, to the point where it felt like I was gonna get whiplash.
And the ending.. fucking hell, I love Liv's cliffhangers. Brutal, messy, came out of nowhere, but also made so much sense, absolutely fantastic. I absolutely cannot wait for book two to come out, and if she wants to send me an ARC I would probably die of happiness *very subtle hinting here*.
I wanted to include so many quotes that I loved, but there's too many I've highlighted, so here's a few of my favourite ones:
✨ "We hurry, but we don't run. No point in that since rot is always faster."
✨ "I am heat under my skin, fire in my joints, flame in my marrow." His voice slips into a hiss. "And you expect me to go for walks?"
✨ "Do not be brave." "I don't know how."
✨ "Out of the room, out of the gloom" - literally my new motto in life.
✨ "Feed me before I do something reckless, like be agreeable."
✨ "I never apologise." But I do as he asks because the carriage is small and my bravado can't stand up in it without hitting its head.
5 (demonic) star read ✨ Do you ever just love an author so much that you will read every single piece of their work no matter how fucked up it is, only to discover with absolute horror that you've become attached to their grotesque nature? haha oh yeah me neither, that would be crazy............
Woah. That was... I wasn't expecting that. I thought I knew what was going on. I was wrong. I thought I knew where it was going, everyone's role. I was... So wrong. Holy shit.
It makes me sad to DNF this one, but the prose in this book is just not the same as Court of Ravens. It seems like the author tried to be more poetic, but in that attempt, she added a lot of unnecessary repetition that ended up annoying me quite a bit. I can tell you with absolute certainty that the people in this kingdom need bread. I was told several times. The concept of the book is interesting, but the execution is lacking. DNF at 35%.
this gave me spooky belladonna vibes but with spice and plot twists.
Bravo 👏 👏 👏 I did not see that ending coming
Basically our fmc and family takes care of the dead, there is this "rot" going around killing everyone (think of it like a disease)
well her brother and dad have this rot and a man comes and tells her its because of a curse and she can stop it if she gets the king to fall in love with her and make her the queen.
Well not everything and everyone is as it seems and she has to figure out what is truth, who is telling the truth and how to save her brother and end the rot.
I cannot say enough great things about Liv Zander's writing. You get pulled into her world's without even trying. This was probably one of the more gory books I've read. I see why it was so important to the story but seriously gory. I would give this book 4.5/5 stars. The ending was so good, I am glad I already have the 2nd book to move right to. I am incredibly invested in this story and can't wait to see what happens next to Elara and Vale. I would definitely recommend this book to fans of dark Romantasy. If you read Liv's Court of Ravens duology then you'll enjoy this duology too.
What an amazing dark fantasy. Unlike any other book out there. I loved the eerie, decaying, rotting setting. The detailed writing Liv Zander gave really made you see & understand the severity of the situation. I was enthralled by all the characters & couldn't choose whose side to be on. There was tension, yearning, spice, twists, deals & decisions made with bitter consequences. This book is part 1 of a duet, in typical Liv Zander fashion. I solemnly believe this may be her best duet yet.
Immersive, descriptive, and emotionally deep. A great read.
I thoroughly enjoyed every page turn of this… yes even the maggots and extremely detailed rot descriptions (I would advise those with weak stomachs to tread lightly and maybe read before eating…)
But, seriously, I didn't think it was too much or overdone. Considering some reviews I saw (unintentionally) I was expecting thick paragraphs full of extreme details tempting my stomach to revolt… but I didn't. What I did find was a wonderful lyrically phrased story with a well planned plot line.
That said, I do admit, I personally had Vale figured out after the first interaction…and was certain after the next. What led me there? most/all other characters are described by how ill they looked or what level of rot they have, yet Vale wasn't…he was dignified and suave while surrounded by - well, death.
Anyway, I loved the twists and turns the story took, for a minute I doubted my prediction with the brother storyline… but stayed resolute, convinced by the fact Vale showed up at a perfectly needed moments, and that staff ever interacted with him (apart from the servant girl who was more scared…) and he just felt… different 😉
Truly loved the story - the mystery and subterfuge was well done and Zanders poetic phrasing is a delight to read.
Ultimately , I could see that the only way out was for Kael to sacrifice his own life… it's usually the way right? Someone has to give something up to save the day…
I'll admit at this stage, I'm leaning towards team Vale, I'm a bit of dark MMC lover and though Kael was wonderfully conflicted as a character and even though I sympathised with him, his death didn't upset me…
I do admit I'm not overly invested in the brother, for me it's that he's one among many who are suffering, but purely his relationship with Elara isn't enough for me to feel connected to him…

Did I RUN to read this book? YES! Did I know what this book was about? no 😂 DID I LOVE IT? YESSSSS!!!
Liv Zander strikes again with an amazing, horrifying, thrilling book!
The amount of detailing that she writes this story, is like we are there (sometimes too much, but I'm not complaining!).
If you are waiting for a soft little story...you can turn around and forget about this one.
Think of a realm dying in decay, like a disease that spreads hungrily because of the...lack of commitment of the king? yes we can say that...
But what does the king have to do to make it right? to make his people healthy, happy with no hunger? well...I would like to say it's an easy task....BUT IT ISNT!
Our characters are just wild cards! We have no idea what is their next move and I loved it!!!
No easy choices (of course not)...but one wrong move...and everything goes wrong.
Besides the tension in this book that you can feel in your bones and carries you and locks you in; you don't have a moment of peace...something is always happening, and the plot after plot??? Oh it make me crazy!
(I was literally jumping around the house screaming "NO WAYYYYYYY")
And now I just have to wait a few days to know what's next!!! Liv Zander was kind enough to do it so, because that cliffhanger? I read it with my friends and when we finished it, we were all conspiring about what will happen next!!! And we can not WAIT to see!
Crown Me Dead by Liv Zander is a dark fantasy romance that had my stomach churning and heart racing. It’s both gruesome and riveting and I loved every second of it. The world building is grim, gritty and immersive. It’s lyrical and grotesque in a way that far surpasses atmospheric morbid and macabre.
Time didn’t exist while I was reading this. Nothing else mattered. I was completely enthralled and the twists & revelations had me reeling. I immediately dove into the duet’s conclusion: Crown Me Yours.
Liv is back, my friends, and she’s coming for more than our hearts.
Liv Zander has done it again! The characters, the atmosphere she creates, the story she tells are all second to none. You can smell the rot, hear the sounds of death and don't even get me started on the maggots. I needed therapy after Court of Ravens and I have a sneaking suspicion that I will need it again by the time this duet ends!!!
It started off really grotesque, so fair warning, I had some troubles getting through that part. But you do because you want to know what is going to happen.
She does it again!!!! Chomping at the bit for part 2 of the duet. 🤯Why does Liv Zander know just what to do to get my pulse pounding and my brain flipping tf out trying to figure out the twist!!! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I will forever read whatever she releases and know at the end I’ll either be crying in a ditch or dancing happily— or both 🤷🏻♀️
