Seeders Universe #2

Sector Justice: A Seeders Universe Novel

USA Today bestselling author Dean Wesley Smith returns to a not-so-distant future in his acclaimed Seeders Universe series.
Mattie Silks must team up with the most unlikely of partners to save the sector from a ruthless dictator. But her problem with Red Simms stems from more than just his work with Innocence Incorporated. She can’t keep her hands off him.
And he can’t seem to keep his hands off her either.
With or without love, the two of them must save the galaxy.

USA Today bestselling author Dean Wesley Smith published more than a hundred novels in thirty years and hundreds and hundreds of short stories across many genres.
He wrote a couple dozen Star Trek novels, the only two original Men in Black novels, Spider-Man and X-Men novels, plus novels set in gaming and television worlds. Writing with his wife Kristine Kathryn Rusch under the name Kathryn Wesley, they wrote the novel for the NBC miniseries The Tenth Kingdom and other books for Hallmark Hall of Fame movies.
He wrote novels under dozens of pen names in the worlds of comic books and movies, including novelizations of a dozen films, from The Final Fantasy to Steel to Rundown.
He now writes his own original fiction under just the one name, Dean Wesley Smith. In addition to his upcoming novel releases, his monthly magazine called Smith’s Monthly premiered October 1, 2013, filled entirely with his original novels and stories.

I bought this as part of a StoryBundle.

This is an engaging story of two security/enforcer types on parallel missions who happen to cover each other's asses, both in and out of bed. I thought it was going to be a typical military scifi story, but then they got naked. Fine with me!

After some minor competition, these two start to synergize and come up with clever solutions to catch and kill the bad guy. Both are accomplished assassins. There are very few secondary characters, only one really provides a pivot point. The fights, sneakiness, and sexy bits are all very well done.

I will mention that I felt there should have been one more read-through by an editor. "He opened the door, stepped through, and closed the door." The use of "door" twice in this sentence is very awkward to me. This happened several times through the book. Maybe I'm being picky, but this author has access to first-rate resources.

He is also prolific, and I will read more of his stories.

Terrible.

The first two books in this series were fine - entertaining and quick reads. Sector Justice was not. The book could be improved immensely by deleting half the chapters. Those chapters read like erotica written by a naive 12 year old.

In the chapters I didn’t skim because they were tedious retellings of their night together, I kept being told how attractive they were, how much she liked his butt, and so. That’s what passed for character development.

The plot: cartoonish supervillain wants to blow things up and rule places. Our two love struck heroes manage to pull themselves out of bed, do some hand waving, and save the day.

This is the first novel in the series which moves away from Earth and the aftermath of its planetary disaster to being basically a mystery novel set in the wider more advanced parts of the galaxy. As such the relevance to being in this specific universe is pretty meaningless. the same story could be written in any of the major sci-fi franchises that are out there.

That said it's a decent tail, of murder, conspiracies, evil men, secret agents, and the like. It is also by far the most adult in terms of sexual behaviour of the series so far. This I actually approve of as the primary male/female relationship in the prior books was less fully developed, however, if adult sexual interactions are not your thing I would avoid this one. It wasn't a problem for me.

The main reason I gave this a 5-star rating was that this came over as a much more accomplished piece of writing, with better plotting, a more grown-up approach to relationships and a definitive endpoint, as well as the aspects I'd like from the prior in the series.

A good standalone novel provided you can deal with adult themes.

I read the first book in the series and thought this was the second. Now I've just noticed an alternate cover for the book and am second-guessing about reading this book. Well, don't judge a book by its alternate cover? I'll read it until it turns bad...

Okay, a day later and this quickly turned into an erotica book. Very disappointing. I was hoping this would be a great science fiction independently published series. Needless to say, this is entered as a DNF and I will not be reading anything else by this author.

I enjoyed the first book in this series but the second was a huge letdown. I struggled to finish it being bored by the uninteresting plot and the repetitive sex scenes which were poorly written and seemed the sort of thing that might excite a teenage boy.
I’ll give the third book a chance but if it’s anything like Sector Justice I’ll be out.

Not really sure how this book relates to the others in the series I've read so far, but nonetheless, it's a decent story, and since I have the other books in the series, I'm off to read the next one now.

Way to much soft porn

Should have been classified as a romance novel.. Way to much making love not war. It was well written book.
