Penelope Jones Halsall
aka Caroline Courtney, Annie Groves, Lydia Hitchcock, Melinda Wright

Penelope "Penny" Jones was born on November 24, 1946 at about seven pounds in a nursing home in Preston, Lancashire, England. She was the first child of Anthony Winn Jones, an engineer, who died at 85, and his wife Margaret Louise Groves Jones. She has a brother, Anthony, and a sister, Prudence "Pru".

She had been a keen reader from the childhood - her mother used to leave her in the children's section of their local library whilst she changed her father's library books. She was a storyteller long before she began to write romantic fiction. At the age of eight, she was creating serialized bedtime stories, featuring make-believe adventures, for her younger sister Prue, who was always the heroine. At eleven, she fell in love with Mills & Boon, and with their heroes. In those days the books could only be obtained via private lending libraries, and she quickly became a devoted fan; she was thrilled to bits when the books went on full sale in shops and she could have them for keeps.

Penny left grammar school in Rochdale with O-Levels in English Language, English Literature and Geography. She first discovered Mills & Boon books, via a girl she worked with. She married Steve Halsall, an accountant and a "lovely man", who smoked and drank too heavily, and suffered oral cancer with bravery and dignity. Her husband bought her the small electric typewriter on which she typed her first novels, at a time when he could ill afford it. He died at the beginning of 21st century.

She earned a living as a writer since the 1970s when, as a shorthand typist, she entered a competition run by the Romantic Novelists' Association. Although she didn't win, Penny found an agent who was looking for a new Georgette Heyer. She published four regency novels as Caroline Courtney, before changing her nom de plume to Melinda Wright for three air-hostess romps and then she wrote two thrillers as Lydia Hitchcock. Soon after that, Mills and Boon accepted her first novel for them, Falcon's Prey as Penny Jordan. However, for her more historical romance novels, she adopted her mother's maiden-name to become Annie Groves. Almost 70 of her 167 Mills and Boon novels have been sold worldwide.

Penny Halsall lived in a neo-Georgian house in Nantwich, Cheshire, with her Alsatian Sheba and cat Posh. She worked from home, in her kitchen, surrounded by her pets, and welcomed interruptions from her friends and family.

Yikes. This was rough. Another “Return to Eden” with a Pygmalion meets Frankenstein sideplot added to it. It has it all and when I say all: revenge, numerous murders, incest, more revenge, clinical sex, drug czar, child abuse, senile dementia aka Alzheimers, sexual sadism, one orgy, epic coincidences, and a Marie Antoinette hair style fail.

The short version: Heroine pays the blind H to teach her how to seduce so she can wreck epic revenge on the man that scorned her and is responsible for her father’s death. I’m not sure how learning how to put the sexy moves on a man equals revenge, but obviously we have to go with it. Then it’s off to back story for the damaged heroine, the damaged hero, and then culmination of the revenge plot. This is a four part book, and seriously needed editing especially when it came to the sad sack backstories.

The long version.
Silver’s backstory:
The heroine, originally named Geraldine, is the apple of her titled father’s eye much to the chagrin of his elder sister and her golden hair demon spawn Charles. Sadly the heroine is fat and lumpy and Charles begins an early gaslighting campaign in order to woo her so he can get his hands on the estate he feels he is entitled to. Along the way he seduces women and starts a small drug dealing business. Trapped with a plain body and face, the heroine lusts after Charles who turns the screws nicely until it all catches up to him when the H’s father who is in the early stages of Alzheimers finds out. Charles solves the problem by scaring the father’s horse and he is killed. Geraldine is still besotted with Charles until she finds him with his skank of the week in flagrante delicto. She flips out, stages her death, and plots his revenge. She will become gorgeous and thin and ring down hell upon his head. It’s going to take a few years of plastic surgery and dieting, but she doesn’t have much else going on. She also freezes the bank accounts and with no body to find, Charles will have to wait seven years before he can really be Lord of the manor. During the painful process of plastic surgery and dieting, her hair goes white as Mari Antoinette’s supposedly did. Hence the name change to Silver. P.J’s not messing around.

Silver Present day:
She is somehow hooked up with Jake the blind virgin whisperer and ex-Special Ops or something. For a gob of money he will teach her his sexy ways for a month, and quite the clinical class it is. Reading about her sex education was grim and grueling. There’s no banter, no charm, no sensuality. He’s over critical about her technique, and she’s resentful of his instruction. Master Po and Little Grasshopper they are not although they do quote Chinese proverbs at each other. The coup d’ grace is he is supposed to take her virginity. She tells him to just get on with it, and he does. He later sneaks in and gives her a show of what sex is really supposed to be about. For a blind man, Jake is surprisingly mobile. For clarification, the mobility reference is regard to his penchant for breaking and entering Silver's room, not sexual positions. Geraldine aka Silver goes to Paris and load up on sophisticated sexy clothes for bait for Charles.

Jake’s backstory:
Jake has no money to keep up the estate he inherited. Something to do with his homosexual uncle trying to murder his grandfather or something. Exhaustion was setting in and I wasn’t paying attention. He ends up selling it to one of the most vile characters, a man eating social climber that honed her seductive skills on her father among others. Yes, her father. Excuse me while I retch. She wants the estate and wants Jake to introduce her to the local gentry. She also wants Jake, but doesn’t get him because Beth, her Bambi-like daughter, catches his eye. I should say the daughter is more like Bambi’s mother, and you know how that turned out. Jake rescues Bambi/Beth, but she becomes collateral damage when Jake closes in on some drug dealers in South America. In his revenge mode, he has all of the bad guys shut down except for one. Surely, it couldn’t be?

The revenge:
Silver catches Charles’ eye as she is the new shiny toy in London and has created a persona of rich, widowed shiny toy. From the gitgo, Silver wonders what in the ever loving hell she ever saw in Charles and how is she going to go to bed with him to get revenge. Lots of waffling back and forth until Jake points out that she doesn’t have to go to bed with Charles. She can just get her revenge some other way. Well duh. While Silver contacts her attorneys, Jake gets caught up with the evil-doers that killed his wife. There’s a confrontation on a castle parapet with the major players where the blind guy and the frail flower are the only ones to survive. Then a HEA comes eventually.

This book was grueling, and I needed a shower after reading it. Multiple layers of sick motivations and just not fun. It reminded me a lot of Miranda Lee’s Hearts of Fire series which comes later.

I mentioned Return to Eden at the beginning as it is same era with OTT revenge/transformation, and is the standard for all epic revenge stories.

Rating 3.5**

A tragic dark revenge themed novel laced with an unlikely love story of blind man and insecure damaged girl. Both united in quest to seek retribution from those who took the lives of their loved ones.

This was a good book. I enjoyed reading it and is not the typical harlequin novel by Jordan. It was very well developed, in terms of the plot, with great depth of character backstory but
I felt some things detracted from the main story. You could say some information was not necessary. I felt the ending didn't meet the build up to the revenge - I was expecting more. Nonetheless it was intriguing and an enjoyable read.

The villain was one of the worst I have come across.

It has a slow build up at the beginning but after first part it gets better...

A cheesy contemporary romance about revenge, plastic surgery and love/hate. Nobody noticed, but "Silver" is a rip-off of the Australian prime time soap opera "Return to Eden".

I enjoyed this more than Power Play, mostly because the ending didn't ruin Silver. However, the ending was completely rushed, and more time was spent on Silver's miserable childhood than the revenge plot, which was not what I read this for.

I just re-read this book. I have fond memories, as it was the first romance novel I ever read. I thought I would give it another try and see if I still enjoyed it 12 years later.

And I must say, it didn't disappoint. I enjoyed the interaction between the two leads. Their chemistry was evident from the beginning, you were just waiting for them to finally realise it.

I did find the back stories a little annoying as I felt they should have happened earlier in the story. It felt a little jarring to all of a sudden be thrown into the various back stories of the characters. It disrupted the flow of the story for me.

I enjoyed the descriptions of the various houses, as it made the story come alive and easier to picture the setting of each scene. I was up on the turret in Kilrayne with Silver and Jake as the final scenes played out. (thats how powerful the descriptions were)

It was also refreshing to read a romance novel that wasn't vulgar or crass. Yet got the blood slowly simmering with the growing relationship between Jake and Silver. Proof that romance novels don't have to resort to being smutty to grab your attention.

I originally only gave the book 3 stars, but since re-reading it, I have upgraded it to 4 well deserved stars!!

I'm really torn on how to rate this book..

What I liked:
The premise - I'm a sucker for a good old fashioned "revenge plot" story. Throw in some angst from the h/h's past, and a dash of physical impairment and you've got a happy Jess.

The writing style - this is my first Penny Jordan story, and I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed her style. You found yourself caring about even just the minor characters, and she really went out of her way to give you oodles of character development all around.

What I didn't like:
The entire middle of the book. The book is split into four parts. The first part is present day and introduces you to both the hero and heroine, giving you a bit of their backstory and develops their relationship (and I use the term "relationship" loosely). The second part, however, goes back in time all the way to the heroine's childhood and pretty much gives you her life story for a quarter of the book. Then when it finally gets to part you'd recognize (when the hero and heroine first become aware of each others' existence), it jumps back in time again to tell you the hero's life story. Then finally it jumps back to present day picking up our heroine pretty much where we left her off many chapters ago.

So that's why I'm so torn. On one hand, the backgrounds Ms. Jordan wrote were well written, engaging, and interesting to read. However, it ruined the pacing of the book. I almost feel as though she could have left them out completely and simply had a shorter novel that didn't jump around in time. So I'm torn. Part of me wishes she had left it out completely, and another part realizes that it was important to the story and character development but doesn't have any idea where else it could have been included and made sense. Had she placed the characters' histories at the beginning, I doubt I would have finished the book because the pacing would have been dreadful.

So, I'm stuck giving it a lower rating than I would have otherwise. It was well written and interesting, with just the right amount of intrigue and sizzle, but the whole middle-section-flashback deal kind of killed it for me.

3 1/2 stars

Interesting and very realistic plot. However, its writing style is totally a different genre than a novel. Most of the book is a flash back on entire lives of several characters. It is written more in style of biographies than a romance novel.
If you are looking to read a romance you would be disappointed in this one.
Long history telling with no conversations gets really boring.

I have no words......

Why was Silvers celtic magic linage mentioned so much in the first 100 pages then never again? Why are all of the women either fragile and bird-like or sex crazed femme fatales? Why is everyone having sex with family members?

However, reading this was an absolute hoot and I will be lending my copy to everyone I know.

I have mixed feelings about this book. It started very promising, however parts 2 and 3 - throwback into the past, were too long for my liking. Especially about Geraldine Francis. Of course it was important to know the whole story, but at times it was boring and difficult to read about this obese girl, so smart and yet so naïve.... Sometimes I just wanted to step into the book and tell her to stop eating those damn sweets...
I felt so sorry for poor Beth, I think it was unkind for Jake and Annie to be guessing, if one day Jake just would have got tired of her insecurities and regretted marrying her, no one knows what future brings, she could have grown into strong woman after becoming mother, if only she had a chance...
Did anyone else felt uneasy about the way Silver lost her innocence? It looked almost like rape to me.. And after three weeks of training... ( shaking my head in disgust)
I would have liked more passion, connection, chemistry, romance from Jake and Silver. Also less of the past and more of the present. Still unsure if I will keep this book to reread in the future...

Phew !! What a tiring readathon !!!

The author has attempted, quite bravely, I must admit, a magnum opus of a tale. Where the love story between the leads is only incidental.

The story is so long, it's broken into 4 sections. The first and last have the leads discovering the wonder of their bodies first, and the wonder of their love in the last.

The intermediate sections are dedicated to their back stories, one each. An admirable idea. But these middle chapters are so damn detailed that you tire of simply turning pages. Why would I want to read the heroes' ex-mother-in-laws life history over 10-20 pages !!!

At the intellectual level, I salute the author for plotting such an elaborate tale spanning so many characters and time periods.

But at the emotional level, I couldn't really empathise with the leads and their tragic pasts. I felt the author was trying too hard to make the reader feel sorry for the blind war veteran hero and the rich but depressed heiress heroine.

Good, brave attempt, kudos for sheet effort and planning put in by the author. If only I could love the lead characters she has created ...

At first I was like whoa! What am I reading! She's paying a guy to teach her how to seduce someone. That's defiantly a first for me, never read anything like that in a book before. When I was reading about her past and how she got to that point I thought it would never end. I get that a lot of stuff happened but I just want to get on with it. Jakes past was fine to read it didn't feel like it was just dragging on. I totally knew that they would end up together but the fact that he fell in love with her at the clinic before all of this I was just like "awe" that's kinda of sweet.

I didn't really care for this book and I did dislike how it was written into four parts. It was odd to me while reading it. I didn't care for the heroine either, her low self esteem was disgusting, even worth than what she turned herself into. Not the book for me!

Silver was one of my favorite josei or young woman manga and I always wanted to read the novel version of it. Well luckily Half Price Books had a copy and I just finished reading it.

Overall, the main story is the same, but a lot of the characters act slightly different except Charles.

Interestingly, a lot of the characters that have a small mention in the novel version have full fleshed-out stories in the manga. The only exception is Beth who is mentioned a little bit in the manga but her story is extremely fleshed out in the novel.

Another major difference is that Jake has no connection to Silver's previous life, but we do learn a lot about his family and Beth's family that doesn't happen in the manga.

I know some people complained about part 2 and part 3 of the book which has flashbacks to Silver and Jake's past, but I like these parts because it explains their motivation and what drives them to their actions in the present.

I do agree that I wish part 4 where the revenge actually takes place was longer. The climax seems a little rush.

I guess my biggest complaint for the novel version is that Jake is not a likeable person to me. There are several decisions that he makes in the book that made me feel really uncomfortable. And his manga counterpart would not have made those decisions.

Also, watching Charles downfall is a lot more satisfying in the manga.

I would still recommend this book for those who love the manga and want to see what the original story was about. But remember, it's easier to improve a story that's already written. Writing your own story is much more of a challenge. The manga made improvements over a story that for the most part was okay. And with those improvements, there is a better story.

But after reading Silver, I do want to read some more of Penny Jordan's work someday. I think she's a good storyteller and I want to see what else she can do.

Wow, this was awesome guys..I'am a sucker for revenge and makeover stories and it was just what i wanted (needed? lol:)
All the epic proportions of the 80's soaps' glamour, sex, crazyness galore:)
SPOILER:
I read the reviews and i do agree that it had similarities with the series Return to Eden, but i think the similarity ended at the plot. Stephanie's dad was never killed by Greg and Greg did fall for Tara, but Charles never loved anyone but himself, let alone Silver. If we start only from the aspect of revenge itself, then we can accuse all other books about revenge of imitation. Not every novel is the The Count of Monte Cristo that is about revenge, naturally.
So, ladies and gents, just enjoy it, it's quite a ride, you'll not be bored! I wasn't :D
I kinda wish that somehow Jake could get his sight back...but..oh well...drama drama drama :D

My first foray back into romance. It was an easy read as this book is a reread for me and I still like the story.

Imagine being born into a wealthy family with an entitled past, where the sons inherited everything.

Imagine being an only child, a child who was not deemed to be beautiful, a child with high intelligence.

Imagine finding out your father was murdered by the same person who cruelly turned your life upside down.

Until

You seek revenge by turning yourself into someone else.

Imagine in your revenge mindset you seek a person for help - a person who also lost a loved one in revenge.

Amongst this a love emerges that sees what is on the inside not the outside.

This is a pretty crazy thriller romance. A quick synopsis could be: naive chubby girl falls for pretty boy who does her wrong and she becomes a femme fatale out for revenge and somehow finds love along the way. Basically, it's a soap opera in a book, so, I enjoyed it lol. Hence, 4 stars.

I enjoyed the parts that took place in the "present" but the sections on Jake and Silver's histories were way too long. And then the actual vengeance plot felt very rushed. I read this book because I had enjoyed the manga based on it. I preferred the manga especially the changes to the past, creating a shared history for the two. Also, there was a great deal more action leading up to the end. I may have enjoyed this book more if I'd read it first.

I didn't like this book too much when I started it, however it got much better. There's a lot of sex in it - primarily in the beginning. I tend to randomly leave my books "in the wild" thru BookCrossing but I had no idea where I could leave this and not have someone offended by the content!
