Yuko is gone and only remembered by a small few. Because of her disappearance, Watanuki takes it upon himself to run Yuko’s wish-granting shop and vows to never leave it. Still inexperienced, he dedicates himself to helping everyone that stops by his shop—including the one that ate his right eye. Watanuki also must take special care not to get himself punished for assigning the wrong price for granting a wish. How long will he allow himself to perform Yuko’s work? Will she ever return?
This omnibus edition includes volumes 16-17 of XXXHOLiC!
CLAMP originally began in 1989 as a twelve-member dōjinshi circle, but by 1990, the circle had diminished from twelve to seven. Of the remaining seven, Tamayo Akiyama, Sei Nanao, and Leeza Sei left the group during the production of the RG Veda manga. Other former members of CLAMP also included Soushi Hishika, O-Kyon, Kazue Nakamori, Yuzuru Inoue and Shinya Ōmi. Currently, there are four members in the group.
In 2004, CLAMP's 15th anniversary as a mangaka group, the members changed their names from Nanase Ohkawa, Mokona Apapa, Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi to Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (her name is pronounced the same, but written with different characters) respectively. The August 2004 issue of Newtype USA, a magazine specializing in events of the anime and manga subcultures, reported that the members of CLAMP simply wanted to try out new names. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's. Ohkawa and Igarashi, wanting to go with the flow of Nekoi's and Mokona's name changes, changed their names as well.
In 2006, they made their first USA public debut at Anime Expo in Anaheim, California. They were well received at the convention, with 6,000 fans in attendance at their panel.
Watanuki—having taken Yuuko’s place—is so different now. No longer is he the clumbsy Watanuki who experiences misfortune everywhere he goes. But now he’s an intelligent, matured, changed man who grants wishes while waiting for Yuuko to come back 🥺.
One book to go and I am hoping this is a completed series and not a cancelled/ongoing one. Time skip after Yoko said her goodbyes. Doumeki obsessing about choices and the egg, Himiwari banished from the shop, but Kohane sticking around. Watanuki has become more solemn and mature, whilst every human around him has aged. The spider lady being a customer was a surprise. Nice to see the little oden fox again.

I love the shift this series has taken. It's sad that Yuko's gone, but I so enjoy seeing Watanuki coming into his own and maturing and seeing all the background elements of running the shop. I like the returning characters and how even things with Domeki and Himawari have grown.
I'm surprised CLAMP puts as many volumes into the end of xxxholic as they did. But, in a way, I also appreciate it. Tsubasa has a crazy, frantic pace. xxxHolic has always just glided on by like a river, so, naturally, its ending isn't as succinct or explosive. But I do think this is one of my favourite parts of the series. The character development is just so good.
Watanuki-San is learning how to run the Wish Granting Shop in place of Yuko-San. He is keeping it open for Yuko for when she returns. Domeki remains a loyal friend and is able to visit the Shop while still living in the human world. Watanuki-chan is evolving to be more and more like his mentor Yuko-san.
Watanuki is now running the shop, and his powers are growing as he does his best to fulfill his wish for Yuko's return. This is a different xxxHolic from the past ones, still it's powerful and a joy to read. This is my all-time favorite manga series by my favorite group (CLAMP). Highly recommend.
