This one ties up Izumo's arc and she gets some closure in regards to their family. The next arc really hasn't started yet but that doesn't mean this one was slow by any means. However, it's next to impossible to review without major spoilers so all I'll say is it has major implications for Shima, Bon and their friends. Also there are some serious implications for Yukio and the hints of his own demonic blood popping up and Lucifer's interest in him. For the Rin fans, actually he's rather in the back seat for this volume (and he sort of makes an ass of himself when he is allowed to talk.)

Still a very good series with great art.

This volume gives matters some time to settle and gives the team an opportunity to unpack some of their questions. Kato does two things very successfully in this. 1. She uses lulls like these to bring to the front and outright ask the questions the readers should be asking if they are following the plot thorouhgly.

And 2. She manages to give what was a pretty predictable twist a level of uncertainty that helps readers truly immerse themselves into the story.

It all makes for a good set up to delve further into the story and I am sure I am not the only one ready to dig into the next volume.

This manga is up there in my top 10. Action, adventure, a smidgen of romance. The character designs are all quite unique which I appreciate. As an aside, the manga and anime are so far removed from each other one you get past that first story arc that they could be 2 completely different stories. They are both quite good, though. Do both.

This volume wraps up the fight and aftermath of the first battle with the Illuminati. We get a bittersweet close to Izumo's arc that have me all the feels and we get an explanation about Shima's actions and betrayal once he suddenly returns to the Cram School. His classmates are happy to see him, but also understandably angry. Most want to trust in him, but at the same time, others are also suspicious of him. Honestly, reading the volume, I too, am not sure what to believe anymore. He seems like a trustworthy guy. He's so laid back and pretty carefree about the whole situation (being a double spy for Mephisto) but the way he talks, his mindset, it's a little sus. And it's like do we trust him?? Do we not?? He, himself said he is neutral. So, like Shima, wtf??? Lol. Eh, he may be having 'a blast' and is finally feeling free, but I think he is still loyal to the True Cross. I don't Shima would be that big if a dick to really and truly betray everyone. Lol. Though, of course, he is also acting as a spy tor the Illuminati now. So, just have to wait and see where all this mess leads.

Meanwhile, huge strides are made in this volume that I have been waiting to get to concerning Yukio's character even since I saw a few couple of major spoilers. In this volume, it is revealed that Lucider actually appeared before Yukio, wanting him to join the Illuminati. Though, he doesn't want to force him. Ajajalwbowkw. Knowing what it is to come, Yukio..!! Of course, Yukio yelled at Lucider for him to stay back, but he's so conflicted and so desperate to know everything. Ajaiwhwkw

Also, Mephisto!! Holy sht. I knew the guy was a son of a btch, but for him to so plainly and openly state and reveal to everyone that they are just mere pawns in his game. Holy hell. I can understand Rin's great fury towards Mephisto and that he really isn't trustworthy no matter how helpful he has been. Everything is just a game to Mephisto. Ahhh.

Anyways, that's the major things happening in this volume. And I look forward to and dread what will happen with one of my precious boys who I love so much. Seeing the spoilers wrecked me, so who knows how I'll feel actually reading such a turn for the worst. I better prepare to cry lmao.

Another bit of a dip, post-arc and I guess that’s what we have to look forward to when gearing up for the next arc. This one wasn’t as bad as vol 10, because we had a lot of answers which gave some resolution to some of the pressing questions involved.

Izumo finds out what happened to her sister which was both touching and heartbreaking. I appreciated some actual bonding between the girls, it was sweet but Paku was kind of a dick to tell Shiemi that Izumo was jealous of her. I get why, but I don’t really feel that was appropriate of her. Izumo just can’t really seem to catch a break, ffs.

Shima’s “betrayal” is revealed with him being a double agent and it made a bit more sense since him being a sudden turncoat didn’t really make sense for his character. I really want to know more about this Yamantaka though since Mephisto said that the “black flame” is second only to the “blue flame” - I want to know moreeeee!

I really liked how it was never really clear whether Shima was truly on the kids’ side or not and it seems that he may not even know, himself.

I still find Lucifer boring, since it’s not entirely clear what his motivations are other than to “declare war”. I guess he plans on using Yukio as his next weapon? Is that what Izumo was also supposed to be? Stay tuned for the next volume!

I was going to give this 4 stars because of the whole "Shima is actually a double agent" thing, which I thought was disappointing and too cliché. But after the way it ended, I honestly cannot tell which side Shima is on. Although I do find it slightly more interesting since, once again, Mephisto was behind it.

Mephisto continues to baffle me. Even when he snapped at Rin and called everyone worms, I can't tell if he's trustworthy or not.

Izumo finally seeing her sister was heartbreaking. Thankfully her sister is saved and under protection (once again because of Mephisto) but sadly she was too young to remember Izumo when they were separated. And Izumo breaking down crying in front of Shiemi was really depressing as well. Especially since Shiemi cried along with her, knowing that this whole time Izumo "hated" her because she was jealous. But she wasn't jealous for some petty reason, which I like.

Also, is it wrong to think that the character known as Lucifer is low key hot? Maybe it's the hair (it's probably white or light blond) or the way it's cut, but man, the way he's drawn, he seems like an attractive character (maybe we'll see him in season 3?!). And his proposal to Yukio was very interesting...oh, I can't wait to see all this animated in the upcoming season (assuming they'll be able to animate up to this point.)

The Exwires manage to shrink a monstrous Gedoin down to a more manageable size and find themselves face to face with Shima, who manages to give them the slip yet again. Recovering in the hospital, Izumo learns the whereabouts of her missing sister and uses a key to go see her. She finds that her sister has been adopted into a nice family and is very happy. She doesn’t tell her sister who she is, and her sister doesn’t remember her, so returns to the hospital, crushed. She confronts Shiemi, who only wants to make her feel better, but Izumo isn’t ready for that and resists.

Suguro goes home to tell Shima’s family the awful truth about their son, only to learn something very unexpected. In the meantime, Gedoin has escaped and made his way back to Lucifer on the Dominus Liminis. Gedoin only wishes to please Lucifer, but Lucifer thinks he is nothing and quickly deflates him.

The Exwires return to school, and we learn more about what Shima is really up to. Naturally, Mephisto is involved. In the classroom, confusion ensues when first one and then a second Shima turn up. Who is the real one and who the imposter? And why is either one there? Mephisto arrives in the nick of time and transports some of the students back to his office before they harm Shima. There they meet Lightning, Arthur Angel’s second-in-command, who has come to determine if Shima is trustworthy. Other questions arise, such as why is Mephisto raising the son of Satan? Answers are demanded.

This volume of Blue Exorcist is filled with a lot, both in terms of action and character development and story. The truth about Shima was unexpected, and I can see it becoming problematic for everyone. I love how outspoken Rin is. When asked if he thought Shima was trustworthy, he said no, but he meant Mephisto, not Shima. Plans are being made to fight the Illuminati, and time is of the essence. How much does Mephisto know that he isn’t telling? Also, what’s up with Yukio? An interesting scene hints at what I’ve been thinking all along.

Great volume, looking forward to more!

THE GOOD

Rin, Shiemi, Izumo: i really love these three and their pure selves. They want to believe the best of Shima, even while Shima's two closest friends come to their own conclusions that he is not trustworthy at all. Rin, Shiemi and Izumo are kind hearts underneath it all, but I worry that it may bite them in the butt this time...

Shima; I love Shima. A lot... but he's playing a very dangerous game here, trying to help and double cross both groups and he fact of the matter is, while being a double agent may provide some faith.... you just can't say who's side he is really on. Seeing as he is my favorite male character, I, of course, want him to be a good guy, but... well, only time will tell.

Yukio: Now, I can see where this is going... I do believe Yukio will eventually defect to the Illuminati. I hope he won't, because I don't want to see him and Rin at odds with each other, but I get the feeling that's where this is going.

THE BAD

Mephisto; I'm with Rin on this, i got a million bones to pick with Mephisto...

This was a quick read. I’ve already seen this part in the anime, but (and I don’t know if it’s just that I’ve forgotten since it’s been a while) I feel like the manga made things clearer somehow. I’m glad I’ve been able to experience this series in both manga and anime.

We see the aftermath of the battle at Dream Town Inari. I was relieved when we learned Gedoin’s fate. He definitely deserved worse, but at least he won’t be able to do anymore harm. He was definitely unhinged.

Kamiki almost made me cry. I’m glad her sister is okay. But she had every right to feel hurt and upset. The little chapter with Paku waiting for them at the train station was a nice little dose of humor that was desperately needed.

As for Renzo, I don’t know what to think about him. I’m glad he’s not just a straight up traitor. Or is he? There’s a lot to unpack with that kid, but I just can’t dislike him. I can’t say the same for Yukio. Honestly, from here on out we’re really going to start seeing the demise of his mental health. I’m not really looking forward to that, if I’m honest.

this volume was fairly confusing.

the first two chapters wrapped up the Izumo rescue arc and the remaining four were extremely confusing. the reason for this is that there seemed to be a few fairly ridiculous plot twists and reveals that made little to no sense in relation to earlier volumes. this largely had to do with the traitor who it now makes no sense whose side he is actually on in the first place as well as now. on the upside we found out a bit more about a few side characters and had some possible hints as to what Mephisto Pheles is really up to.

overall quite a confusing volume which didn't really explain what was going on instead chose to confuse readers with twists that at this stage seem random and illogical. should be interesting to read more when i come back to it after break from series

This one occurs entirely within the aftermath of the previous volume's (volumes?) encounter with the Illuminati. It deals mostly with the fall out of discovering Shima was there working/fighting with the Illuminati. An explanation is given, and Shima will remain a big part of the story. Thankfully, he's not fully explained or finished with and so clearly will be an interesting character to follow throughout the book. We get a few hints about where the series is going next--the Illluminati seem to be an enemy/rival that will persist for a while, while most of the enemies encountered to this point have faded out after a volume or two.

As always, an excellent book.
This one may have had a different editor or been made in a time crunch, because there appeared to be less plot / dialogue / action, and there were a few occasion in which the page layouts were confusing / sparse. Not much happened, but I enjoyed reading it because I love the characters. The information in this book just ties up the loose ends from the previous one and preps the storyline for coming books. I've already read 16 and 17, so I read this one out of order and had absolutely no trouble understanding the next 2. Those ones have more story.
4 stars rather than 5 because of the uncharacteristically slow pace.

So we get a couple revelations with the biggest one being about Renzo as we learn the truth about him being a spy and it is kind of a clever idea and I wonder how it will be used. Granted it is confusing that he is still attending the school with the rest and it seems kind of pointless at that point but I do like seeing the rest of the class basically torturing him after he comes back. The touching one is about Izumo's sister and it is a very bittersweet ending that I hope gets expanding on in the future.

Just when you think Izumo Kamiki's arc is done, Kazue Kato plunges the knife further into our chest.

But now we have some fallout from Shima's betrayal- sort of. Who can really be trusted? Yukio is still dealing with his own turbulent emotions, Shima's loyalty is in question, Mephisto is still Mephisto... not a huge fan of these plots where the key idea is that everyone is confused about everything all the time. But I like our cast of students so much that I can put up with it.

Love the focus on Yukio. Also the bathhouse chapter was annoying as hell but I suppose out of all of the bathhouse scenes in manga this was one of the least unbearable and creepy ones.

I felt like this volume was very uneven. I'm glad Lucifer dealt decisively with Gedoin and I am intrigued to see what the Illuminati want with Yukio but I thought Shima's return and the explanation for his double cross was ham-fisted and I feel like a big part of his character has changed with little explanation. Volumes in between arcs tend to bit a bit wonky. I also feel so much for Kamiki, she has a lot of healing to do.
