Līdz pusei nesapratu, kapēc šis nosaukts par zviedru labāko detektīvromānu 2015. gadā. Pat gribēju likt malā, bet piespiedu sevi izlasīt un principā nenožēloju. Romānā augstākie policijas priekšnieki, detektīvi, ministri un politikas pelēkie kardināli dziļi iepīti un sapinušies savstarpējas intrigās, varaskārē un "valsts nozagšanā", bet beigās labie uzvar. Daudz nezinu neko par zviedru politiku, bet ticu, ka tāds kvalitatīvs Indriķa Latvieša "Baiļu" zviedru variants, kurš tomēr līdz piecām zvaigznēm neaizvelk. Arī latviešu tulkojums vietām neprofesionāls.

As a new year begins, the Stockholm police force is reeling after a shootout between cops & several rival gangs in Skarpö, a forested area east of the city. It ended with 9 dead including 2 of their own. Among the injured was DI David Sarac, a legend within the Intelligence Unit. In the days that followed, the incident was quickly hushed up & David disappeared.
In a high security hospital far from the city, David’s only goal is accumulating a big enough stash of sleeping pills to put a permanent end to his nightmares. His broken body may be healing but the PTSD has done a number on his head. Then someone slips him a letter. It’s short & to the point: my secret for yours.
David relives Skarpö every night. He feels responsible for what happened but he also knows that one of his colleagues stitched him up. The letter writer claims to know who & will reveal the name if David answers one question. It’s a chance for revenge he can’t pass up & with pills in hand, he escapes from the hospital.
A couple of months later, DI Julia Gabrielsson is attending one of the most gruesome autopsies of her career. The body was dismembered & under water for weeks before being found. Identifying the victim is just one of her problems. The other is babysitting her new partner Omar Amante, a civilian investigator foisted on her by her waste-of-a-uniform boss. He’s a man of few words & no one seems to know how he ended up assigned to the Violent Crimes Unit. Lab tests on the body provide just 1 result but it’s a whopper. DNA matches a sample taken from Skarpö.
That’s it for the story outline, folks. The thought of trying to summarize any more is, quite frankly, exhausting. This is one of the most complex, labyrinthine plots I’ve ever read & I say that with a big smile. It could easily have ended up leaving readers in head-scratching confusion. Instead it’s a clever, multi-layered story that keeps you gripped & guessing right up to the final page.
The roots of the story began in MemoRandom which was more of a police procedural. This devotes equal time to Julia’s investigation & political corruption in the Swedish government. There is a large cast of returning characters, many of whom remain unburdened by trivial things like ethics. With few exceptions, these are people who take self-preservation to new heights. Lies, secret agendas, old debts & shifting alliances are gradually revealed as the story lines intersect. Think you’ve got it figured out? Ha! Just wait ’til you turn the next page.
The crew of despicables are offset by several characters you’ll cheer & fear for. Julia is a smart, perceptive woman who slowly realizes she has no idea who to trust. Amante is a man tortured by what he saw on Lampedusa while working for the EU & remains somewhat of an enigma. Atif is a part time gangster with dangerous ties who just wants to save a little girl he loves more than life. And David remains the damaged hero, a man who realized too late the ramifications of his actions. None of them are lily-white & some have done terrible things. But all have a moral line in the sand that is sadly lacking in people they’re forced to deal with.
It’s an intelligent, fast paced read that is hard to put down & you may be surprised by the time you get all the answers. No doubt this can be enjoyed as a stand alone but I highly recommend reading MemoRandom first to fully grasp all the intricate connections between the characters. There are a couple in particular I’ve become quite fond of & here’s hoping they pop up again in another book.

Fans of Swedish crime fiction rejoice; Ultimatum is available to the public today. Thanks go to Net Galley and Atria Books for the DRC, which I read free in exchange for this honest review. Although it is the second in a series, I was able to follow along fine without having read the first in the series.
The story weaves together a cast of complex characters within the Swedish police intelligence network and organized crime. Frequent changes of point of view heighten the suspense, which grows to a screamingly tense climax.
Those that are even a little squeamish may want to pass on this one. My threshold for explicit gore is at the level of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (not related to this book, but likely those considering this story will have read that one.) This one went past that, and over the top of my personal limit. I found myself skimming every time some graphically sadistic detail rose to the fore; I had hoped that once we were past the beginning and the discovery of the first murder, it would ease up, but I stuck it out all the way through and it didn’t. Another precaution goes out to those—most likely not a lot of people, but if this is you, you need to know—that have lost a loved one to drowning. Again, the description of the recovered body is very graphic and jarring enough that I had to disengage from the story until I was past it.
I would have liked to see less body shaming (“fat bastard” and so on), and more than one female in this large cast of characters who is in the story for some reason other than to nurture or assist the male characters.
That said, the male characters are well drawn, and the settings are well rendered. Those that aren’t upset by the level of detail to corpses, torture, injuries and personal bodily functions will likely enjoy this white-knuckle thriller.
I found one part of the denouement trite, but then I have read so many of these things that I am pickier than most.

Jag valde den här boken som ljudbok för att den vunnit något pris och för att jag verkligen gillade "slutet på sommaren" av samma författare. Jag förstod inte att "Ultimatum" var en fortsättning på "Memorandum" före jag börjat lyssna. Jag tvekade lite och undrade om jag skulle läsa den första boken, men problemet är att jag håller mig långt undan böcker om organiserad kriminialitet. Jag lät bli att läsa "Memorandum" och var handikappad av det genom största delen av "Ultimatum". Persongalleriet är stort och utan att ha alla på klart på förhand tog det länge innan jag fick nån koll.
"Ultimatum" fungerar ganska bra som nordisk noir. Här är det lite moraliserande och det är inte helt enkelt att dra några tydliga streck mellan dom goda och dom onda, iallafall inte i början. Det börjar med ett styckmord, fortsätter med en rymning och avslutas med ett uppgör som omhandlar händelser från båda böckerna. Invävt i det hela är ett politiskt maktspel av hög kaliber.
Inte helt det jag hade sett för mig, men så går det när man inte undersöker vad en bok faktiskt handlar om på förhand. Låt det inte vara någon tvekan om att Anders de la Motte kan skriva, det kan han. Om du funderar på att läsa denna, lär av mig, läs "Memorandum" först.

Bardzo przyzwoita i chyba trochę niedoceniona w Polsce kontynuacja "Szczątków pamięci".
Lekturę zepsułam sobie sama na własne życzenie, zabierając się za drugą część cyklu dopiero dwa lata po przeczytaniu części pierwszej, chociaż obie książki zamieszkały na moim regale mniej więcej w tym samym czasie. Ba, samo czytanie "Ultimatum" również niemiłosiernie poszatkowałam. Rozstania, powroty, rozstania, powroty... Bardzo toksyczna relacja z książką, źle to wszystko zniosłyśmy (obie - tak sobie to wyobrażam, więc tak musi być ;)). Obecnie, chwilę po skończonej lekturze, mogę "Ultimatum" jedynie przeprosić i pogłaskać po okładce. Kompletnie nie doceniłam i nie uszanowałam tak dobrego thrillera.
Moje przerwy w czytaniu poskutkowały tym, że w pewnym momencie koszmarnie pomieszały mi się postacie, co sprawiło z kolei, że przyjemność płynąca z poznawania historii bardzo mocno spadła. Zniechęconych w tym momencie uspokajam - nawet po dłuższej pauzie można odnaleźć się w fabule. Autor prowadzi narrację dynamicznie, dzięki czemu nie można się znudzić książką, ale też zgrabnie wplata w tekst przypominajki o relacjach między bohaterami czy pełnionych stanowiskach. Dzięki temu nawet obco brzmiące imiona czy nazwiska szybko da się przypisać do konkretnych postaci. Nie trzeba też hiperdobrze orientować się w wydarzeniach z części pierwszej, do czego przyczynia się twist na początku "Ultimatum" (zmiana głównego bohatera). Podobne zamieszanie i zaskoczenie czeka nas na samym finiszu. Końcówka to rewelacja. Człowiek myślał, że na thrillerach zęby zjadł, ale jednak serducho trochę zadygotało.
Dlaczego w takim razie nie pięć gwiazdek? Nie przyczepię się literówek, bo zauważyłam ze dwie, które i tak nijak nie wpłynęły na przyjemność z czytania. Po prostu - jak już wspomniałam - serducho zadrgało, ale głównie na końcu. Cała historia jest świetnie skonstruowana, ale istnieją powieści, które wciągnęły mnie bardziej i są mi bliższe. Absolutnie nie oznacza to, że "Ultimatum" czegokolwiek brakuje.

Interesting crime story. Only two things were somewhat incomprehensible to me: how Kassab happened to know where Natalie lived (and he even got there unnoticed), and the line with the infiltrator Janus went missing completely...

A complex conspiracy thriller involving scheming politicians, corrupt cops and vengeful gangsters. This book won the prize for best Swedish crime novel in 2015, but you'll need all your wits about as you fit together all the parts of a labyrinthine plot which begins with a gun battle, between police and rival gangs at Skarpö - a small island, east of the Swedish capital Stockholm. Nine men are left dead including 2 police officers - while a 3rd policeman, DI David Sarac, is badly injured. The incident is hushed up & David disappears into a secure psychiatric unit. At this point, the reader is allowed into the mind of Sarac, who seems to be contemplating suicide.
Fast forward a few months and detective Julia Gabrielsson is given the job of identifying a mutilated body found in a lake nearby the Swedish governing party’s conference centre. Who is the dead man and who went to such extraordinary lengths to ensure the body isn't identified?
Julia is given a new assistant, Omar Amante - whose father is a high ranking politician - and together they begin to piece together a conspiracy which reaches the highest levels of government.
The action is slow to start and the story has dozens of twists and turns, some of which are initially baffling - but, if you stay with it, you'll be rewarded with a very satisfying political thriller which has more than one totally unexpected ending!

Visit the locations in the novel
Well this made an impression on me! can I just say from the outset though, that if you’re squeamish then this might not be the one for you. There’s torture, graphic descriptions of bodies being removed from water and much more besides. But it’s a good thriller and it did win the best Swedish crime novel in 2015 so maybe just don’t eat before during or after.
There’s a lot to this one. A complex, taut thriller of corrupt police, dodgy politicians and gang wars. A unique view of Stockholm’s underworld and police activity which takes us east to the lovely island of Skarpö -where one policeman had ended up traumatised to the point of ending up in a secure psychiatric unit
This is the backstory to the novel so you can imagine the thrills and spills which follow. Police have now found a body, well hidden in beautiful lake Malaren. an office whose father is high up in the political world is assigned to help with the investigation. And that’s where the trouble starts.
Gruesome but oh so captivating and those legal and police threads just keep getting tangled together in very imaginative ways.
Swedish Noir at its best.

Absolut en fördel att ha läst MemoRandom (första boken) innan, annars riskerar man att vara ganska förvirrad. Men Ultimatum överträffade sin föregångare och hade det mesta, en riktig nagelbitare innehållandes både politiska/polis intriger, riktigt bra sidequests, och ett bra upplopp. Om man gillar Pascal Engman och Denise Rudberg kommer man gilla Ultimatum. Polisthriller med sjukt högt tempo när det är som bäst!

Στο πρώτο βιβλίο της σειράς του David Sarac, το Σημειωματάριο, πίστεψα πως όλα τέλειωσαν εκεί. Όλα ήρθαν και ''κούμπωσαν''. Λύθηκαν απορίες κι η εικόνα ήταν πλήρης. Εκτός βέβαια από το τι έγινε μετά στην ζωή των πρωταγωνιστών. Πώς συνέχισαν και, για κάποιους, αν συνέχισαν και τελικά δεν ''έπεσαν'' στην τελική μάχη.
Με αυτήν την λογική, πίστευα ότι το δεύτερο βιβλίο θα αφορούσε σε νέα υπόθεση στην οποία ίσως να εμπλέκονταν και κάποιοι από τους χαρακτήρες που γνώρισα στο Σημειωματάριο.
Και κάπως έτσι ξεκίνησε το πρώτο κεφάλαιο. Μέχρι που παθαίνω το πρώτο σοκ και σε όλο το υπόλοιπο βιβλίο ψάχνω απεγνωσμένα να βρω απάντηση στο τι συνέβη πραγματικά εκείνη την στιγμή κι αν αυτό που διάβασα κι αφήνεται να εννοηθεί και παρακάτω όταν πια οι υποψίες κλίνουν προς αυτό, είναι αλήθεια! Και, πιστέψτε με, δεν το συνειδητοποιώ πριν το τέλος.
Και σ' αυτό το βιβλίο λοιπόν, ο καλός γνωστός De La Motte. Κινηματογραφική ροή, αγωνία, δράση, κυνηγητό, σκοτωμοί, να μην ξέρεις ποιον να πιστέψεις, να υπάρχουν χαρακτήρες που θεωρούνται ''κακοί'' αλλά δεν θα τους χαρακτήριζες αβίαστα ως τέτοιους (και μάλλον τους συμπαθείς, παρά τους αντιπαθείς). Και ο χαρακτηριστικός τρόπος αφήγησης που είναι σαν να παρακολουθείς τα γεγονότα σε real time. Υποκεφάλαια μέσα στα κεφάλαια που αλλάζουν συνέχεια το σκηνικό και από αναγνώστης μετατρέπεσαι σε θεατή που παρακολουθεί την συνολική εικόνα των γεγονότων που ''τρέχουν'' ταυτόχρονα.
Η υπόθεση ξετυλίγεται κι απλώνεται ακολουθώντας διαφορετικές διαδρομές κι υπάρχει και μία πιθανή απάντηση σε κάθε μία απ' αυτές. Στο τέλος, καταφέρνει να τα συγκεντρώσει όλα σε ένα. Και δεν λέω κάτι άλλο πάνω σ' αυτό γιατί κινδυνεύω να κάνω spoiler.
Αν και απ' την στιγμή που κατάλαβα τι παίζει, υποψιάστηκα και ποιος κρύβεται από πίσω (παρόλο που οι υποψίες ''οδηγούνται'' τεχνηέντως αλλού) αυτό δεν μείωσε καθόλου την αγωνία και την απόλαυση του διαβάσματος. Υπάρχουν τόσα ανοιχτά μέτωπα και δεν σου αφήνεται χρόνος να σκεφτείς πώς δένουν όλ' αυτά, πώς θα καταλήξουν, ποιος και πώς θα την γλιτώσει...
Μακάρι να μεταφράσουν και τα υπόλοιπα βιβλία του. Δεν είναι πολλά. 2 ανεξάρτητα κι ένα, φετινό νομίζω είδα, που είναι το 1ο σειράς. Θα ήθελα να τα διαβάσω.

Μέχρι που παθαίνω το πρώτο σοκ και σε όλο το υπόλοιπο βιβλίο ψάχνω απεγνωσμένα να βρω απάντηση στο τι συνέβη πραγματικά εκείνη την στιγμή κι αν αυτό που διάβασα κι αφήνεται να εννοηθεί και παρακάτω όταν πια οι υποψίες κλίνουν προς αυτό, είναι αλήθεια! Και, πιστέψτε με, δεν το συνειδητοποιώ πριν το τέλος.
Και σ' αυτό το βιβλίο λοιπόν, ο καλός γνωστός De La Motte. Κινηματογραφική ροή, αγωνία, δράση, κυνηγητό, σκοτωμοί, να μην ξέρεις ποιον να πιστέψεις, να υπάρχουν χαρακτήρες που θεωρούνται ''κακοί'' αλλά δεν θα τους χαρακτήριζες αβίαστα ως τέτοιους (και μάλλον τους συμπαθείς, παρά τους αντιπαθείς). Και ο χαρακτηριστικός τρόπος αφήγησης που είναι σαν να παρακολουθείς τα γεγονότα σε real time. Υποκεφάλαια μέσα στα κεφάλαια που αλλάζουν συνέχεια το σκηνικό και από αναγνώστης μετατρέπεσαι σε θεατή που παρακολουθεί την συνολική εικόνα των γεγονότων που ''τρέχουν'' ταυτόχρονα.
Η υπόθεση ξετυλίγεται κι απλώνεται ακολουθώντας διαφορετικές διαδρομές κι υπάρχει και μία πιθανή απάντηση σε κάθε μία απ' αυτές. Στο τέλος, καταφέρνει να τα συγκεντρώσει όλα σε ένα. Και δεν λέω κάτι άλλο πάνω σ' αυτό γιατί κινδυνεύω να κάνω spoiler.
Αν και απ' την στιγμή που κατάλαβα τι παίζει, υποψιάστηκα και ποιος κρύβεται από πίσω (παρόλο που οι υποψίες ''οδηγούνται'' τεχνηέντως αλλού) αυτό δεν μείωσε καθόλου την αγωνία και την απόλαυση του διαβάσματος. Υπάρχουν τόσα ανοιχτά μέτωπα και δεν σου αφήνεται χρόνος να σκεφτείς πώς δένουν όλ' αυτά, πώς θα καταλήξουν, ποιος και πώς θα την γλιτώσει...
Μακάρι να μεταφράσουν και τα υπόλοιπα βιβλία του. Δεν είναι πολλά. 2 ανεξάρτητα κι ένα, φετινό νομίζω είδα, που είναι το 1ο σειράς. Θα ήθελα να τα διαβάσω.

För knappt två år sedan så läste jag den första boken i den här serien, MemoRandom, och då skrev jag så här:
”Det här är Anders de la Mottes fjärde roman. Och det är den första boken i en kommande serie böcker.
Dom tre tidigare böckerna han har givit ut, är en trilogi, och böckerna heter ”Geim”, ”Buzz”, och ”Bubble”. Jag tyckte mycket, mycket om den boktrilogin, så jag hade höga förväntningar på den här nya boken.

Anders de la Motte skriver på ett sätt så att det är oerhört svårt att lägga ifrån sig boken. Ett otroligt högt tempo är det hela tiden, så jag förstår mycket väl att det spelas in en teve-serie baserad på böckerna. För när man läser boken så känns det nästan som om man tittar på en film.
Jag tyckte väldigt mycket om boken, och ser verkligen fram emot att läsa kommande böcker i serien. Och jag rekommenderar verkligen boken till alla som tycker om moderna, snabba, verklighetstrogna, lite våldsamma, lättlästa och spännande kriminalromaner.”
Nu har jag läst den andra boken i serien, UltiMatum, som är en fortsättning på MemoRandom, och jag tyckte precis lika bra om den här boken.
Rekommenderar absolut boken, men jag tycker definitivt att man ska läsa MemoRandom först, för att få störst behållning av både MemoRandom och UltiMatum.

Detta är författarens femte bok, den kom ut 2015 och är en fortsättning på MemoRandom.
Innan jag kommer till just boken så skall jag prata lite om mitt förhållande till författare och deras böcker.
Jag har en förmåga att bli intresserad av många författare och införskaffar deras böcker, och då menar jag alla deras böcker, jag läser de första böckerna men sedan börjar jag mera samla dem på hög för att någon gång i framtiden läsa dem. Saken är den att det blir fler och fler författare som fångar mitt intresse och högarna växer för jag fortsätter att samla böckerna för framtiden.
En av dessa författare är just Anders de la Motte, jag var på bokmässan i Göteborg året var 2015. Jag gick förbi en stor monter med stolar och en scen. Där stod en man, eller om han satt, och hade precis börjat prata om sin nyutkomna bok och sitt skrivande. Jag kände igen namnet och visste att han skrev deckare, hade ingen annan punkt jag skulle på då så jag stannade och lyssnade på honom. Han fångade verkligen mitt intresse och hade hur kul som helst när jag lysande på honom och alla små anekdoter och historier som han berättade.
Det var såklart Anders de la Motte som jag lyssnade på och jag var bara tvungen att köpa boken han hade kommit ut med. Kan för övrigt rekommendera att om ni någon gång har chansen att lyssna på Anders så gör det, ni kommer inte att ångra er.
Jag har efter detta möte genom åren införskaffat inte bara de tidigare böckerna som Anders skrivit utan även varje år han kommit ut med en ny bok köpt den också, då för det mesta på bokmässan där jag träffat han varje gång.
Jag har läst Anders första trilogi och även boken innan denna men sen har det tagit stopp. Allt för många författare som har mitt intresse. Men nu har jag bestämt mig för att jag skall ta en författare i min stora hög och beta av dennes böcker. Den första jag väljer att göra detta med är då Anders, det är nu dags att läsa ifatt med hans böcker.
Boken är i och för sig rätt så fristående från den tidigare boken, men jag rekommenderar ändå att man skall läsa de två böckerna i rätt ordning för att få ut det mesta av handlingen.
Det är svårt att prata om boken utan att avslöja stora saker om handlingen, så jag kommer att försöka att bara prata i stora drag och rätt allmänt om den. Men måste säga att författaren verkligen kan få läsaren att tappa hakan och han är inte rädd för att våga göra saker med handlingen. Den som läst boken förstår säkert.
Nu var det ett tag innan jag läste den första boken men författaren får snabbt in en i handlingen igen, han sammanfattar det på ett bra och smidigt sätt som går ihop med den pågående handlingen riktigt bra.
Handlingen är spännande och språket är fylligt och beskrivande. Vi dras in i ett dödsfall och med det kommer det en del intriger. Huvudkaraktären vet inte vem som går att lita på och motarbetas i sin utredning och blir tvungen att ibland ta egna vägar utanför den normala proceduren.
Med ett trollbindande språk och handling och de korta kapitlen gör att man lätt sträckläser boken, den blir svår att lägga ifrån sig. Anders de la Motte visar med denna bok, likaså med sina tidigare böcker att han är ett riktigt säkert kort om man vill ha spännande böcker med bra handlingar.
Jag ser fram emot att arbeta mig framåt i de la Mottes böcker, härnäst står första boken i årskvintetten. Jag skall verkligen fokusera på hans böcker så att jag, med lite tur och en del envishet, har läst ikapp till hösten då det är dags för bokmässan igen och det nu nästan årliga mötet med honom och införskaffandet av den nyaste boken.

Nadechněte se. Pořádně. Anders de la Motte (45), bývalý policista a nyní autor bestsellerů, přichází s druhou knihou v sérii MemoRandom. Je tady UltiMatum, jeden z nejlepších knižních thrillerů roku.
Je to jeho pátá kniha a je nutno říct, že kvalita má vzestupnou tendenci. Za knihomoly musím přiznat: máme velké štěstí, že Anders de la Motte odložil policejní odznak a usedl za klávesy počítače nebo psacího stroje. „V roce 2012 jsem opustil svou práci, abych se mohl soustředit jen na psaní, nechal jsem si jen několik klientů. Bylo to těžké rozhodnutí, vzdát zajímavou práci s mnoha výhodami a místo ní rozjet nejistou kariéru spisovatele. Nelitoval jsem však ani na vteřinu,“ prozradil apisovatel. De la Motte zaujal už první sérií knih Game, Buzz a Bubble. Podle všeho to byl však jen rozjezd pro aktuální dění na stránkách jeho knih. Jaké je motto nového příběhu UltiMatum? „Chci jen jedinou věc. Všechno, co máš.“
Z jezera Mälaren poblíž školicího centra švédské vládnoucí strany bylo vyloveno lidské tělo, dokonale naporcované a už částečně rozložené. Případ přistane na stole kriminální inspektorky Julie Gabrielssonové. Čí je to mrtvola a kdo si dal takovou práci, aby ji nebylo možné identifikovat?
Policistu Davida Saraca pronásledují démoni minulosti. Poté co jen o vlásek unikl smrti, drží ho na izolovaném oddělení daleko od Stockholmu – prý pro jeho dobro. David by rád navždy umlčel hlasy ve své hlavě. Je to všechno tvoje práce, Davide, šeptají mu. Byl to tvůj plán. Tvoje chyba. A pak dostane nabídku, která změní jeho názor…
Držitel dvou ocenění za svou tvůrčí práci (ceny Akademie švédských spisovatelů krimi za nejlepší detektivku roku, první za debut [game], druhá právě za tento titul) představuje příběh, který zásadně navazuje na předchozí knihu MemoRandom. Rozhodně tedy nejprve sáhněte po té. V té se vám poprvé představí nemilosrdné prostředí, kde moc je argumentem pro všechno. O tom se přesvědčí i inspektorka Gabrielssonová tváří v tvář lidské obludnosti. Lidské tělo bez rukou, vyloven�� z jezera Mälaren, před ní leží rozporcované na třináct dílů. Obličej oběti je zřejmě kvůli znemožnění identifikace rozřezán motorovou pilou. Kdo to je? A kdo je bestiálním vrahem?
De la Motte bravurně zaplétá osudy postav, aby nakonec daly dohromady jasný obraz. Jeden zvrat stíhá druhý, čtenář se ani na okamžik nenudí. Ačkoli snadno identifikujeme typické znaky klasické severské detektivky (a de la Motte svižně šlape na paty i bardům, jako je Jo Nesbø), UltiMatum je více akční, než u seveřanů bývá zvykem. Každá z postav je dokonale propracovaná, v každé své vrstvě. Nic není jednoznačné, jen touha dosáhnout svého za každou cenu.
„V mých knihách najdete jen velmi málo lidí, kteří jsou 100% dobří nebo špatní, tak přece život nefunguje,“ říká autor. „To je jedna z věcí, které obdivuji na Georgi R. R. Martinovi (68, pozn. red.: autor Hry o trůny). Když je některá z postav v jeho knihách příliš dobrá nebo špatná, prostě je zabije, protože jsou příliš předvídatelné.“
Jak už jsem uvedl, titul patří jednoznačně mezi špičky svého žánru. Jen škoda, že Anders de la Motte zatím nezískal pozornost jako jeho kolegové. Možná, že právě tato kniha to změní, měla by.

This is a hodgepodge of characters and plot lines that eventually collide and are sort of concluded, but not satisfactorily. First, there is not one ultimatum but several questions: what happened to cop David Sarac and why?; What’s up with Oscar Wallin, high police official who can be a bit of negative force?; Why is Julia Gabrielsson abused so often? Because she’s a woman? And who is her partner, Amante? Friend or spy? Julia is meant to be the focus of the novel but seldom stays that way for long. She and Amante are clearly the most qualified and informed police in the matters of Sarac and other murder victims but they are constantly walled off from the case and must almost die before anybody takes them seriously. The character of Wallin, a superintendent of cops, is drawn so finely that his guilt at some level is assumed from the moment we meet him. Why then the pretense that he may be a good cop? De la Motte gets very involved with police politics and power struggles—one of which includes a possible Swedish Prime Minister and his devious wife and her power-mad father—that impact on Julia and Amante but the duo is never portrayed as strong enough or clever enough to fight the bureaucrats as Harry Hole of Jo Nesbø would do, for instance. The last several chapters move at a breakneck speed that far surpasses that of the rest of the book, almost as if the author heard someplace that the sure way to entrap a thriller fan is to keep the action fast and furious at the end. So, though long and complex, this novel did not move me to order more from the author. Definitely, for me, an entry in the middle of Nordic Noir, certainly not at the top.

This follow up to MemoRandom, Anders de la Motte writes a fantastic thriller that engages readers from the beginning and doesn't let go until the twisted end. Julia Gabrielsson is a strong female protagonist, fighting her way through the sexism and machismo that she deals with regularly as a Detective Inspector in the Violent Crime Unit. Ultimatum is filled twists and suspense, readers always unsure just who is telling the truth and who may commit the next murder. With deadly alliances and betrayals at the highest political levels, Ulitmatum takes readers through an unfolding and fraying of conspiracy until the shocking ending settles it all.
SUMMARY: When a gruesome murder is discovered months after it was committed, Detective Inspector Julia Gabrielsson, along with her civilian partner Amate, will stop at nothing to solve the case. When they uncover the truth- the body was that of Detective Inspector David Sarac- the stakes are raised to the highest level. Boken är den andra i denna serie. Jag har inte läst första delen men blev riktigt sugen på det nu efter att ha läst denna. Jag har inte läst dessa förut för att titlarna och omslagen inte har dragit mig till sig. Fick en av hans andra böcker, #Slutetpåsommaren av min syster i julklapp och fastnade direkt. UltiMatum handlar om ett illa tilltygat lik som hittas. Det går inte att identifiera och helt plötsligt försvinner fallet från deras bord.
Som sagt så tyckte jag väldigt mycket om denna bok. Allting med den tilltalar mig. Språket, karaktärerna och de olika spåren som får ens hjärna att riktigt fundera på hur allt hänger ihop. Boken höll mig i ett fast grepp från början till slut. En spännande bok som måste läsas!

Unfortunately, I read the second book in the series first. I did not realize this part of least a two book series. This book was very interesting. Not only is the book a murder thriller but a political thriller as well. What I love about the Scandinavian authors is how the characters do not fold into specific molds. The police live in a grey world. As we know, life isn't always black and white. The anti-hero lives not only in this book but all the Scandinavian books. Read. However, read the first book first.

I hate when I go to review a book and then realize that it is a book in a series. Apparently, this book was #2 in the series which may have answered more things in this book.
This was a book written by a Swedish author and was awarded the best Swedish Crime Novel. I thought it was ok and definitely kept me reading but seemed a little tangled between all the people and stories.

En riktigt bra bok, i mitten av boken hade jag inget direkt sug att läsa boken men jag hade nog bara en period där jag helt enkelt inte var sugen på att läsa böcker för handlingen var bra boken igenom och det var hela tiden saker man ville ha reda på hur de skulle gå. Fram tills slutet kändes boken som en 3+ men en riktigt bra slut lyfte boken till en 4-.

The opening murder is quite gory, so if you're squeamish, you might want to flip forward a few pages.
Fast paced, with likeable characters and a complex plot, this is an engaging read. I especially loved the little twist at the end.

I got this book as a gift from Blind Date with a Book. It is all that was promised and more.
Just wish there was a little more explanation at the end of the physical aspect of disposing David Sarac's body.

More of a 3,5 ⭐ I enjoyed this book a lot, but I just didn't feel surprised by the ending. Plus, I feel like it dragged a little bit in the second half.
I will definitely read more books from the detective's perspective.
