Candy is the first part of the Steter serial, Holidays with Steter . I never thought I’d love it that much. I’ve read only Sterek fanfictions so far, so I was a little bit skeptical. But I love DiscontentedWinter’s writing style, and she doesn’t disappoint here.

She presents background story, characterization, grief, painful memories, anger, tension, humor, and hopeful prospects only on 16 pages. It’s outstanding. Peter’s flashback of Stiles as a kid is cute, of the fire breaks your heart.

The kiss is phenomenal.

Just a bowl of candy, but heat and hurt unfurl from the sudden knot in Peter’s gut, and threaten for a moment to overwhelm him. He holds his breath until the feelings subside, then picks up the bowl and takes it back to the couch. He sits with it on his lap, and goes about digging through it, picking out all the candy hearts for Stiles.

HOLY SHITSTICKS!!!!!!

MY FEEZ!!!!!!!!
description

How'd she pack all that into 16 pgs?!?!?!

FECK!

Candy hearts and feelz and a flashback to candy "confiscatting" lil dude with a Secret Agent badge on a Halloween long ago turned my feelz to mush.

P.S. Uh...

“Werewolf racism,” Stiles says.

Peter considers that for a moment. “Well, I don’t think it’s possible for people to be prejudiced against creatures they think are mythical. I would say that when it comes to a charge of racism, belief of existence is a necessary component. Although I would encourage unicorn racism. All unicorns are assholes.”

I think someone's a little jelly of DA HORN.

I really liked this one. It was sweet, but still felt authentic to the characters. It was nice seeing Peter from youth to adulthood. To see who he was before the fire, to appreciate what the fire did to him, and see how pain and loss warped him. Not that he was perfect before, but that surviving, suffering, and loss took their toll. It's sort of sad that the show seems to gloss over the fire, and the deaths. It could add so much depth to the show, and to Peter and Derek, but I digress. A really good story about the start of something more. No smut, but no silly instant love either.

Read 4/30/2015 Still can't believe that I could/would go to the dark side of liking Steter, but here is proof.

Re-read 8/22/2016 funny because now I'm pretty sure Steter is my favorite (especially those written by DW)

Reread 2/21/2017 I could really use a few (million) Steter fics by DW. Just throwing that out there in case she's reading this.

Reread 1/6/2019 Just to reiterate, I love Steter written by DW. Actually, Lisa (and this fic) is the reason I started to READ Steter.

Lovely. The right mix of feelings and humour so that the story is sweet but still has bite.

A great Peter with snark, shady morals and pain, I love how little Stiles and not so little Stiles is able to win him over.

Not all fluffy; the story shows some history and it's effects - which certainly offers perspective. There's tenderness though I'm sure both characters would scoff at that claim! The kiss is the greatest, and the candy is sweet.

It's Steter. It's fluff. Yet it will make you want to cry and laugh within a heartbeat of each other.

It's just brilliant. Of course.

Two of the things I so enjoy about Peter: his disdain for most other beings, human or otherwise, and his keen senses of irony and sarcastic humor, done in understated fashion. DW captures these wonderfully here.

The stupid are supposed to die before they can breed. It’s how survival of the fittest works, after all.

Like I said.

She also writes children so very well. I enjoy that immensely, as I usually don’t enjoy chidrens in my stories at all.

Also, why she gotta be so down on the All Hallow’s Eve? I know she likes it. Poor Peter, the label of Halloween-hater being foisted upon him in such a fashion.

I like that this author works to find a reason, maybe one of, for Peter and the hatred thinly disguised as that disdain that he feels for most other beings.

Then comes Stiles. With a surprise. And I can't decide if I want to hope for Peter or have him remain the eternally grouchywolf that he is. Course, he could be both, I s'pose.

Who holds that key? Maybe the candy knows...

After reading this, I think I might be more in the Steter category than the Sterek.
I would also read more fanfic if I knew they were as good as Lisa's.

I had fun with this story, it was sweet, emotional, and snarky in all the right places.

Now off to read another of Lisa's brain crack stories.

Mmmm, bendy straws...

Peter and Stiles get to know each other beter with the help of some candy. Short and sweet, yet there was also a lot of feelz. This fic made me understand Peter's motives beter than the TV show did, so I find Peter a lot more sympathetic. Stiles is awesome, and their interaction is adorable.

I never thought I'd be reading another Steter, but DiscontentedWinter wrote it, so I had to, right? Right.

You want to know happy I am I that I did? I am super duper happy!! This is sweet, glorious fluff with edge. Come on, it's Lisa - you had to know there's going to be edge!

Some of my favorite quotes:

And my absolute favorite:

I loved it. Read it. Even if you aren't a Steter fan. Just. Read. It.

Steter you can snuggle with.

This had me shedding a few tears and made me all sweetly hot and bothered in mere span of words. That must mean Discontented Winter has been writing again.

Dang she gives me the feels. Always kicks me right in the bittersweets.

This was so lovely. Super cute but not fluff. There is so much pain and heartache in these 16 pages, I can't even believe it. And not just bad feels but also hope, healing, tenderness, and charm, somehow combining it all to make it feel real and honest and I love that. I really don't know how she does it.

I always love moments with kid Stiles when done right. Such a treat. And Peter, *hugs*, poor broken Peter.

I'll tease about the candy hearts again, those are for Valentine's. Aussies really know nothing about Halloween. :-D

Peter hates Halloween.

For the most part, he can't think of a single good thing about it.

Well...he does remember a kid con-fis-catting his candy at toy gunpoint, and it's a memory he carries with him long after the fire burns away the toy gun souvenier.

Now Stiles has grown up and here they are, sharing another moment. Watching a cheesy movie with Stiles, and just relaxing with him, has Peter happier than he has been in a long while.

Peter sees something special in Stiles and it's really sweet to watch that little blossom of hope bloom in Peter.

Seriously, the emotional range of this 16-page read is astounding.

Damn it... I've just read a Sterek fic. I might never be the same again.

On to Tinsel

I liked the angst and the writing was great as always.

But I guess I'm not convinced to join this ship yet.

With the cuteness! Short and sweet and perfect. I loved how early this started. I was surprised but the interaction with Peter and a young Stiles was totes adorbs and to see firsthand (although briefly) what Peter went through over the years was very insightful. Immediately on to Tinsel!

My first ever Steter fic. I thought I'd ease into it with someone short and light, but it wasn't really my cup of tea. Could've just been this particular fic, though, so I won't give up.

"Peter hates Halloween. Hates it. It's ridiculous. And the most ridiculous thing about it is seeing his nieces and nephews dress up as ghosts, and witches, and ninjas and pirates, as though those things are way more terrifying than what they actually are...werewolves."

A Steter with a non-evil(kind of) Peter.

A Steter with nija feelz.

A Steter that only had kissy face.

I'm not ready to cross over to the dark side or anything but this Steter?

Me likey!!

Didn't get through the first season yet (the show doesn't run here on TV) and now I'm not so sure anymore I will make it anytime soon because what's the point meeting Peter on the sceen while I'm sure he can't compare to Peter as he is shown here? And I'm perfectly okay to follow Ms. Henry's idea of Peter for the time being ... oh and it's also perfectly okay to read about Halloween in August :)

Definition of heartbreaking: Peter's memory of his time in the fire with his nephew.

I don't seek out Steter fics but I might have to reevaluate that if there is a chance I might find more versions of Peter like this one.
