Simon Hanselmann is an Australian-born cartoonist best known for his Megg, Mogg, and Owl series. Hanselmann has been nominated four times for an Ignatz Award, four times for an Eisner Award, once for the Harvey Award and won Best Series at Angouleme 2018.
Oops, finished this one a while ago, so I don't remember specifics. But really, if it's Megg & Mogg, it's great.
Speaking of, Hanselmann has reached a whole new level with the COVID-19 timeline he's currently publishing daily on Instagram. If you aren't reading those, for the love of all that is holy, go back and start from the beginning. 2020 has been ruthless, and these posts are one of the few things I look forward to each day.
I am ashamed to say I really liked this drunk/stoner/slacker graphic novel deliberately directed to drunk/stoner/slacker audiences. Megg of this comic is the same from Megahex, a witch who smokes constantly, and her cat boyfriend Mogg, and two outsider friends, stuffy Owl and WW, a werewolf. All on there "worst behavior," that includes drinking and smoking and desecrating the stuffy French restaurant that Owl takes them to for his birthday. No redeeming qualities about any of them, but hey, what did the title tell you!??
Deliberately sophomoric, and thus wildly popular in the Beavis and Butthead and South Park territory, but without any political commentary whatsoever.
I thought it was a complete waste of time. . . but actually pretty funny, and I especially liked the ending. I am not in the target demographic for this comic, but I still found it amusing, though I can't justify reading it for any real reason than a few laughs.
This story is shorter and not as brutal as Megahex, but it's still hella-bleak. But Hanselmann somehow turns the bleakness into something much more enjoyable this time. The ever-present vulnerability of Owl and his friends is pretty touching in its despair this time around.
Read originally in One More Year, but I like this version due to the sparse use of color. Really allows Hanselmann's sharp cartooning to stand out more. I still prefer the colored "Megg, Mogg & Owl" stories, but I still had a great time re-reading this story in a more simpler fashion.
This is the third Megs and Mogg story I've read and the lack of color doesn't bother me. I think either approach the author takes works for his stories visually. I think I don't need to read anymore of this series because they all sort of start and end in the same place for the most part and the general ideas are all the same. There is really no characters you like. Yes you get a few chuckles in there, but once you read one you kind of read them all. I think that is the trouble with these kinds of stories for people like me that don't have their foot entirely in a series. You tell yourself that you may find something in the next one, but you don't. Megahex was the best one and at least you felt sorry for Owl that first time, but after you see him fall for the same crap over and over again with these really messed up jerks you start to question Owl's choices and start disliking him, too. So that's it for me. (?)
Continued weirdness from the world of Megg, Mogg, and Owl. This book sort of perfectly captures the strange, directionless sadness of life in your twenties. We've all been one of these assholes at some point in our lives, making the story equal parts cringe worthy, emotional, and easy to empathize with. And somehow still funny. Still not sure who I would recommend this to, but I'm eager to hunt down and read more.
Este libro incluye una sola historia en blanco y negro: Worst Behaviour, que viene incluída a color en el volumen "One More Year". Es sobre Búho y cómo se va acercando a su punto de quiebre emocional por todo lo que sufre a manos de sus amigos.
Awesome, as always. Megg and Mogg even a little meaner than usual to Owl this time out which (a) makes me like them a little less and (b) makes me more sympathetic to Owl. Still great comedy. And a big WWJ surprise ending!
