Widely regarded as England's most influential living literary critic & theorist, Dr. Terry Eagleton currently serves as Distinguished Professor of English Literature at the University of Lancaster and as Visiting Professor at the National University of Ireland, Galway. He was Thomas Warton Prof. of English Literature at the University of Oxford ('92-01) & John Edward Taylor Professor of English Literature at the University of Manchester 'til '08. He returned to the University of Notre Dame in the Autumn '09 semester as Distinguished Visitor in the English Department.

He's written over 40 books, including Literary Theory: An Introduction ('83); The Ideology of the Aesthetic ('90) & The Illusions of Postmodernism ('96).
He delivered Yale's '08 Terry Lectures and gave a Gifford Lecture in 3/10, titled The God Debate.

Bir şeylerin değiline karşılık gelir Umut, türeme gereksinimine girişir. Umut için gerçekleşmemiş olana, onu var etme arzusunun en yoğun hali demek gerekir. Konunun özü itibariyle düşünce dünyasına yön veren insanların hemen hemen birçoğunun ilgisini çekmiş ve hepsi de birbirinden farklı yorumlar getirmiş olup taban tabana farklı akıl yürütmeleri ortaya koymuşlardır. Dolayısıyla saf düşünce yapımız ile umut kavramına salt iyimser yaklaşmak tek yönlü bakıp diğer yönlere göz ardı etmemize sebep olur bu da zihinsel gedikleri var eden bir yöntemdir.

So many references and not any Eagleton’s own point of view. I could’ve search the other writer’s or philosopher’s essays or ideas which is mentioned on the book without reading the book and it would be the same (or more beneficial) thing to do.

Hope is what remains among the ruins

Eagleton presents a hope that is at odds with the happiness ideology of the self help world. Optimism, he says, evades morality by refusing to acknowledge the reality of suffering and resides in the ego. The book presents an analysis of literature and the nuanced views of hope such works contain, while working to derive a sustainable view of hope that isnt rooted in naivety or cheeriness.

The reason why it took me relatively long to finish it was because it provides so many food for thought moments you just need a take a break and let them sink in for a while. I thoroughly enjoyed it but I don't LOVE it. Eagleton delves into detail when it comes to bash or elaborate on some modern philosophers and writers which makes him digress and the reader bored at times.

چون‌آن‌که ریویوهایِ دیگر هم نوشته‌ان، کتابِ ایگلتون بیش‌تر گونه‌ای گزارشه از دیدگاه‌هایِ بسیاری اندیش‌مندونویسنده‌و‌... درباره‌یِ «امید» و کم‌تر گونه‌ای گویش از دیدگاهِ خودِ ایگلتون درباره‌یِ این مفهوم. کتابِ سخت‌خوانی نیست و حتا می‌شه گفت هرچهار پاره‌اش رو می‌توان در دو-سه‌فرازی جمع‌بست که اون‌پاره گردشون می‌چرخه. کتابْ بیش‌تر گیج‌کننده‌است، نه به‌این‌معنا که گنگ‌وپیچیده باشه (هرچندکه گاه گنگ‌وپیچیده هم می‌شه)، بل‌که به‌این‌معنا که خوانندهْ هردم، از آغاز تا انجامِ کتاب، با رگ‌بارِ نمایشِ بسیارزیادِ افراد، کَرِکترها، کتاب‌ها، گفته‌آوردها [از این افراد، کَرِکترها و کتاب‌ها]، رخ‌دادها، ادبیات، روان‌کاوی، و بسیاری‌دیگر فیلدوچیزها، روبه‌رو هست‌اش. البته پرش‌هایِ چون‌اینیِ ایگلتون زبان‌زده و توو کمابیش همه‌یِ کتاب‌هاش می‌شه این پرش‌ها رو دید، و خب، اگرچه این بی‌گمان دانشِ شگفتی‌انگیزِ ایگلتون رو توو — دست‌کم — فلسفه‌وادبیات می‌رسونه، اما، هم‌زمان، آسیب‌هایی هم به نوشته‌ونوشتار می‌زنه. این آسیب‌ها به‌ویژه هنگامی سنگین‌ترن که خواننده گاهی می‌تونه گیج بشه و نمی‌دونه این‌میان دیدگاهِ خودِ ایگلتون چی‌ه، و، راست‌اش، ایگلتون چندان هم از دیدگاهِ خودش نمی‌گه تا — شاید — می‌رسیم به‌انجامِ کتاب و در درازنایِ کتاب بیش‌تر به‌جداسازیِ مفاهیم از هم‌دیگه، به‌نقد، میانه‌بخشیدن (تعدیل)، پذیرفتن‌وناپذیرفتنِ دیدگاهِ دیگران، و غیره، می‌پردازه؛ این هم البته به‌نوبه‌یِ‌خود گونه‌ای روی‌کرد [-ِ غالبن سلبی] هست‌اش در فرانهی و پیش‌نهادِ دیدگاهِ خودش. به‌گمان‌ام، برایِ خواننده‌ای که پیش‌ازاین همه‌‌گستر در پیِ مفهومِ «امید» رفته (بازگفت: برایِ خواننده‌ای که همه‌گستر پیِ این مفهوم رو گرفته، و نه خواننده-پی‌گیرِ نُوآمد)، سخن‌هایِ — به‌ویژه آغازین و انجامینِ — ایگلتون در کلیت‌شون شاید یه‌خرده کلیشه‌ای و چه‌بسا ساده به‌دیدبرسن، اون هم پس‌از اون‌همه واکاوی‌هایِ ریزپرداخته‌یِ کتاب، اما در جزئیت‌شون به‌هیچ‌روی. و این البته فکرنمی‌کنم پُینتِ منفی‌ای باشه. گاه شگرف‌بودنِ یک‌سری از مفاهیم یا گزاره‌هایِ «کلیشه‌ای» به‌هم‌اینه؛ پیش‌می‌آد که آدم یک مفهوم یا گزاره داره که به‌طورکلی کلیشه‌ای به‌دیدمی‌آد و چه‌بسا می‌پنداره از معناوارزش تُهی‌ه، اما به‌طورِجزئی که پامی‌ذاره درونِ اون مفهوم یا گزاره و گام‌به‌گام می‌پردازدش، سرانجام به‌جایی می‌رسه که اون کلیشه‌‌ای‌بودن‌اش رو انگار ازدست‌می‌ده، حتا اگرکه گفتارْ هم‌اون گفتارِ پیشین باشه و واژه‌ها هم‌اون واژه‌هایِ نخستین. و این یکی‌از فرایندهایِ خوش‌آیند اما گاه توان‌فرسایی‌ه که این‌کتاب رویِ مفهومِ «امید» به‌کارمی‌گیره.

اما، یکی‌از مهم‌ترین نکات در یک‌خرده‌سخت‌خوان‌بودنِ نوشتهْ برگردانِ پارسیِ این کتابه. رُک‌وپوست‌کنده: برگردان‌اش به‌دل نمی‌نشینه. نخست، نادرستی‌هایِ پی‌درپیِ برگ‌ریزونِ نگارشی که به‌راستی آزاردهنده‌ان. نشانه‌گذاری‌هایِ نگارشی‌اش گاهن شرم‌آوره؛ حتا توو نامِ افراد هم لغزش‌هایِ زیادی رخ‌می‌ده (برایِ نمونه، بیش‌ترِ جاها «ماکس هورکهایمر» رو «مارکس هورکهایمر» نوشته، و نیز بیش‌ترِ جاها «آکویناس» رو «آکونیاس»). درباره‌یِ برگردان‌اش، مترجم‌ها به‌دیدمی‌آد که چندان در بندِ برگردانِ وفادارانه نبوده‌ان، که این به‌خودِ روی‌کردِ هر برگرداننده برمی‌گرده و سَبک‌وروش‌اش توو برگردانِ یک‌کتاب و این‌جا نمی‌تونیم درباره‌اش حرف‌بزنیم، اما این چندان‌دربندنبودن هم پی‌بست‌ها و چهارچوبِ خودش رو می‌خواد و اگه این چهارچوب‌وپی‌بست‌ها به‌خوبی و به‌درستی پرداخته‌نشن، یک‌سری‌جاها به‌برگردانِ نوشته (و خودِ نوشته هم) آسیب‌ها می‌زنه. این توو برگردانِ این‌کتاب به‌روشنی رخ‌داده. برایِ نمونه، یک‌جا که نویسنده از «بدبینیِ عقل و خوش‌بینیِ اراده»یِ گرامشی حرف‌می‌زنه، مترجم‌ها خودشون اومده‌ان درونِ پرانتز جلوِ «اراده» واژه‌یِ «میل» رو هم افزوده‌ان بی‌این‌که توو نوشته‌یِ پایهْ ایگلتون هم‌چین کاری کرده‌باشه! واژه‌یِ انگلیسیِ به‌کاررفته توو سخنِ زبان‌زدِ گرامشی واژه‌یِ Willه؛ زمین‌تاآسمون نایِکی و دگربود هست بینِ «اراده» و «میل»، اون‌هم به‌ویژه زمانی‌که ایگلتون در جاهایِ گوناگونِ این‌کتاب بارهاوبارها درباره‌یِ «میل»، به‌منزله‌یِ برابرنهادِ Desire، حرف‌می‌زنه. پیداست که این درهم‌ریخته‌گی‌ها خواننده رو به‌آسونی به‌بی‌راهه می‌بره. اگر نویسنده خواننده رو گاهی گیج می‌کنه، برگرداننده‌هایِ کتاب بی‌گمان خواننده‌یِ پارسی‌زبان رو گیج‌تر هم می‌کنن. جدای‌ازاین، توو هم‌این نمونه‌ای که آورده‌ایم، یک نادرستیِ بسیار تووچشم‌زنِ دیگه از مترجم‌ها سرزده: «بدبینیِ عقل» رو به‌پارسی برگردونده‌ان به «بدبینیِ روشن‌گری»! واژه‌یِ انگلیسیِ «عقل»، که مترجم‌ها به «روشن‌گری» برش‌گردونده‌ان، Intellectه و شگفت این‌جاست که برگه‌هایِ پیش‌ترِ کتاب هم یادِ پوشیده‌ای از این سخنِ گرامشی کرده و اون‌جا مترجم‌ها Intellect رو به‌درستی به «عقل» برگردونده‌ان. پرسش‌برانگیزه که چرا سپس اون لغزش رخ‌داده. این یک‌نمونه. نمونه‌یِ تووچشم‌زنِ دیگه‌ای بخوام بیارم، در پاره‌یِ سومِ کتابه که به‌دو امرِ بسیارمهمِ فلسفی برمی‌خوریم: «عقل» (Vernunft) و «فاهمه» (Verstand). مترجم‌هایِ این‌کتابْ اولی رو به «دلیل» برگردونده‌ان و دومی رو به «دَرْک»! این‌که اولی رو به «دلیل» برگردونده‌ان بی‌دلیل نیست، چون‌که انگلیسی‌زبان‌ها غالبن برابرنهادِ Reason (درمعنایِ «عقل») رو برایِ واژه‌یِ آلمانیِ Vernunft به‌کارمی‌گیرن. هرکسی که اندک‌آشناییِ کارشناسانه با فلسفه (به‌ویژه فلسفه‌یِ کانت به‌پس) داشته‌باشه، می‌دونه که «عقل» و «فاهمه» چه‌اندازه مهم‌ان و این‌جا یک لغزشِ چشم‌ناپوشیدنی‌ه اگرکه بی‌پژوهش آدم بخواد Reason رو به «دلیل» برگردونه شاید تنها چون نخستین معنایِ کاربردی‌اش «دلیل»ه. شده حتا یک فراز رو جوری برگ��دونن که وارونه‌یِ مُرادِ نویسنده‌است. نمونه‌ها زیاده؛ این چندتا مورد بسنده.

کتاب رو دوست‌دارم و برام گران‌بهاست. نکاتِ گیراوتازه داره برایِ خواننده، پرسش‌هایی می‌سازه، با خیلی‌جاهاش می‌شه هم‌دلی داشت یا نساخت و یک‌سری‌جاها هم زبانِ شوخِ — یا نیش‌دار اما به‌شوخی‌آمیخته‌یِ — ایگلتون، که یکی‌از ویژه‌گی‌هایِ پایسته‌یِ نوشته‌هاشه، خنده‌داره و خنده می‌آره به‌لب. هرچی بیش‌تر کتاب رو می‌خوندم، بیش‌تر یادِ گفته‌هایِ خوندنیِ مارکس — کسی‌که ایگلتون در این‌کتاب هم کمابیش هم‌دلیِ بیش‌تری باهاش داره تا با دیگران — به روگه می‌افتادم در یکی‌از نامه‌هاش به‌ماهِ مِیِ ۱۸۴۳ و، به‌ویژه، این واپسین واژه‌هایِ واپسین برگه‌اش: «و اگر از حال‌وزمانه‌یِ کنونی ناامید نیستم، ازآن‌روست که دقیقن این ریخت‌وروزِ ناامیدکننده‌است که تمامِ من را لب‌ریز از امید می‌سازد. از ناکارآمدیِ اربابان و بی‌تفاوتیِ چاکران و تبعه‌هایی[۱] حرف‌نمی‌زنم که هرچیز را به خواست‌وامانِ خدا واگذاشته‌اند، هرچندکه این دودسته بسنده‌اند تا دست‌دردستِ یک‌دیگر فاجعه رقم‌بزنند. [بل‌که] می‌خواهم تنها نگاه‌وپروای‌ات را به‌این واقعیت بِکِشانم که دشمنانِ فیلیستینیزم[٢]، یعنی، کوتاه‌سخن، تمامِ انسان‌هایی که می‌اندیشند و رنج‌می‌کشند، به درک‌وتفاهمی دست‌یافته‌اند که پیش‌تر ابزاری برایِ دست‌یابی به‌اش نداشتیم؛ هم‌چون‌این، می‌خواهم نگاه‌وپروای‌ات را به‌این واقعیت بِکِشانم که حتا [خودِ] این سیستمِ [ناسازنده و] بی‌کنشی[۳] که کهنه‌وار تنها به‌بازتولیدِ تبعه‌ها می‌پردازد هم هرروزه نُوسربازهایی به دست‌یاریِ بشریتِ نوین درمی‌آورد. بااین‌همه، سیستمِ صنعت و تجارت، سیستمِ مالکیت و بهره‌کشی از انسان‌ها، بسیار پُرشتاب‌تر از افزایشِ جمعیت به هست‌یافتِ یک گسست‌وشکاف در دلِ جامعه‌یِ ام‌روزین سرمی‌انجامد، گسست‌وشکافی که سیستمِ کهن نمی‌تواند آن‌را بِهْ‌سازد چون‌که هم‌چون سیستمی اصلن نه بِهْ‌می‌سازد و نه می‌آفریند، بل‌که تنها هست و [مصرف یا] نابود می‌کند[۴]. و صدالبته که هستِ انسان‌هایِ رنج‌کِش، که می‌اندیشند، و [هستِ] انسان‌هایِ اندیشه‌ورزی که موردِ ستم‌وسرکوب قرارمی‌گیرند، باید هم به‌کامِ این جهانِ ددمنشِ فیلیستینیزم خوش نیاید و خوش ننشیند که، ناسازنده و بی‌این‌که یک‌خرده فکر در کله‌اش بچرخد، تنهاوتنها کمر به‌نابودسازی بسته.
بر ماست که پرده از رویِ چهره‌یِ جهانِ دیرین برکشیم و بله‌گویان و سازنده[۵] به‌جهانِ نوین شکل‌ببخشیم. هرچه‌قدر روی‌دادها زمانِ بیش‌تری بدهند به‌بشرِ اندیشه‌ورز برایِ ژرف‌کاوی در جای‌گاهِ خویش و به‌بشرِ رنج‌کِش برایِ آماده‌ساختنِ نیروهایِ خویش، [نُوزاده]فرآورده‌ای هم که زمانه‌یِ اکنون در زهدان‌اش می‌پروراند، به‌هنگامِ درآمدن به‌جهانِ نوینْ کامل‌ترورسیده‌تر خواهدبود.»[۶]

ایالات متحده، البته همراه با کره‌شمالی، از معدود کشورهای جهان است که در آن خوش‌بینی یک ایدئولوژی غالب و حاکم است. برای اکثریت جمعیت آمریکا سخت‌کوشی و خوش‌بینی تقریباً همسنگ و مترادف وطن‌پرستی است؛ در حالیکه منفی‌نگری گونه‌ای جرم و خرابکاری و انحراف ذهنی به حساب می‌آید. بدبینی همچون خرابکاری ذهنی و عملی بازدارنده محسوب می‌گردد. حتی در بدترین شرایط و یأس‌بارترین زمان‌ها نیز، توهمی از قدرت مطلق و بی‌کرانه در ناخودآگاه جمعی ملی جاری است. امکان انتخاب کسی که به ملت بگوید روزهای طلایی سپری شده‌اند به عنوان رئیس جمهور در آمریکا همانقدر است که امکان انتخاب یک شامپانزه. اخیراً مورفی آمریکایی تحلیل کرده که "سخنرانی‌های تحلیف رئیس جمهوران در همه‌ی زمان‌ها و تحت هر شرایطی خوش‌بینانه بوده است." البته او با این سخن قصد نقد این گرایش را نداشته است. نشاطی آشکار و گریزناپذیر در بسیاری از جلوه‌های فرهنگ آمریکایی می‌توان دید، گونه‌ای "من توان انجام هر کاری را دارم"، مضمونی که آشکارکننده‌ی نوعی ترس بیمارگونه از شکست در آن فرهنگ است.

The well-written preface is misleading. It's a great topic. But, the book is poorly written. Complex sentences, multisyllabic words, and an endless stream of repetitive examples makes it all sound like a riddle even the author doesn't know the answer to. Disappointing.

more like a 3.75? i didn’t expect this veryyyy loose format (only four chapters if i remember correctly) and literary review of other philosophers — i was hoping for a stronger take from the author himself. would be a fascinating lecture (as it was based on) but i found it very repetitive and disorganized with really interesting ideas and takes that were hammered over and over and over with a slightly different quote from another guy and then another guy. BUT i have never reflected on optimism vs hope vs faith vs desire vs conviction so this is a novel topic to me.

On if hope is a delusion/ part of our woes:

“Seen in this light, hope is a fetishism of the future, one that reduces the past to so much prologue and the present to mere empty expectancy…. On this view, hope is the crack in the present through which a future can be glimpsed, but it is also what hollows the human subject into non-being. It devaluates each moment, laying it on the sacrificial altar of a future fulfillment that will never arrive.”

ce nu prea le-a plăcut celorlalți cititori, că se plimbă prin mulți gânditori, e tocmai ce mi-a plăcut mie. foarte erudit.

iar dincolo de orice, terey eagleton e un bun și pasionat cititor de literatură. fascinantă lectura lui Shakespeare și a lui Mann.

Terry Eagleton çok değerli bir düşün insanı ama keşke kitapları Ayrıntı yayınlarından çıkmasa. Yine de çok değerli bir kitap. Zalim İyimserlik kitabını okurken adını görmüştüm. İyi ki alıp okumuşum. Umut duygusunu çok güzel irdeliyor. Bazı metinleri bilmediğim için anlam boşlukları oluşsa da ilerde dönüp okuyacağım ve her daim bakacağım bir kitap. Bizim gibi bir ülkede yaşayanlar için ekstra özel olduğunu düşünüyorum. Yazılabilecek bir sürü alıntı var ama benim en sevdiğim "Tarih kapanmadığı sürece umut vardır. Geçmiş şimdiden farklıysa, gelecek de öyle olabilir " alıntısı oldu.

Typically erudite and comprehensive essay by TE. What is impressive is that even when he manages to mention seven sources in a single sentence you never feel any sense of pretension or name-dropping for the sake of it. Indeed, the writing is commendably clear - unlike quite a lot of cultural critics/thinkers especially from the continent. Having said that, it remains a challenging but fascinating read. It's churlish to complain - of a book which is so encyclopaedic - that it is not encyclopaedic enough. It really does cover almost everything in the western tradition - but it did make me wonder what those outside that tradition have had to say about hope. And I looked ... yes - there is a lot more to say (for example in the Buddhist tradition) - and I am inspired now to follow that up ... separately. At this time of multiple crises, this at least helps to make some sense of what hope might mean.

این کتاب متشکل از چهار فصل است. فصل اول به نام ابتذال خوشبینی درخصوص تفاوت بین امید داشتن و خوشبین بودن صحبت میکنه و اینکه چرا خوشبین بودن در دنیای امروزه چندان واقعی به نظر نمیاد.
در فصل دوم به نام امید چیست؟ گزارشی میده از آرای نظریه پردازان مختلف در جهان در مورد اینکه امید واقعا چیست و چطور میشه تعریفش کرد.
فصل سوم به نام فیلسوف امید میپردازه به آرای فیلسوفی به نام ارنست بروخ.
فصل چهارم به نام امید علیه امید به بازتاب دیدگاه های مختلف در مورد امید در ادبیات و علوم انسانی میپردازه و اینکه چطور گاهی امید به گونه ای نشان داده میشه که امید رو از بین ببره.

در نگاه کلی به نظر من کتاب حالت گزارش و گردآوری داره. نسخه ای که من خوندم چاپ دوم سال ۱۳۹۹ بود و جای تعجب داشت که چطور کتابی با این همه ایرادات نگارشی و جمله بندی های نادرست فارسی که شاید به خاطر ترجمه بد باشه، تو چاپ دوم هم اصلاح نشده. انتخاب کلمات، ساختار جمله‌ها و دیکتهٔ کلمات به طور واضحی افتضاح بودن . امیدوارم یه مترجم بهتر و یه انتشارات و ویراستار بهتر بعدا دوباره این کتاب رو چاپ کنن!

Es un excelente texto que aborda de forma erudita la discusión sobre las diferencias entre los conceptos de esperanza y optimismo, ahondando en como el optimismo no es una cualidad sino una característica innata en ciertas personas y que además, es algo muy diferente a la esperanza, en tanto que implica no considerar la posibilidad de que aquello que esperamos que pase, en realidad no ocurra. Posteriormente el autor explora las diferencias entre esperanza y deseo, recalcando el papel que juega la posibilidad de realización del objeto de esperanza o deseo en la diferenciación de ambos conceptos. A continuación el autor analiza el rol de la esperanza desesperada, entendida esta como la esperanza en un escenario de completa debacle, explorando el rol que tiene no sólo en el ámbito literario y filosófico, sino político.

Es un excelente texto, lo recomiendo.

Es un libro muy interesante, pero se trata más bien de una compilación de citas y referencias acerca de lo que diferentes filósofos, ideologos y literatos han dicho al respecto (bien diversos: Benjamín, Horkheimer, Bloch, San Agustín, Zizek, Freud, Shakespeare, Hardy...).

No es el Eagleton de las monumentales "La estética como ideología" o "Los extranjeros". Es más bien el correcto y divulgativo autor de ”Por qué Marx tenía razón". No obstante, este ensayo es oportuno y didáctico, aunque le falte una perspectiva original más audaz. Y no es superficial como "El sentido de la vida".

Feels like reading someone’s reference manager with some notes on Marxist theology lecture notes

Perhaps the author knows something about certain topics, e.g., literary criticism, English literature (based on his biography). But in anything other than Western literature (and possibly Western philosophy), it is very apparent that he knows little of psychology, cognitive science, sociology, economics, international relations, geopolitics, history, and non-Western topics generally, to name a few. Yet the coverage of his book touches on these topics, and he bases his opinions on assumptions and biases due to (clearly) having little understanding of these topics.

Most annoyingly, he writes like one who believes himself an intellectual and moral superior. He seems to relish pointing out the flaws in others' writings (giving the pessimists more of a pass), pointing out how optimists looked at things with rose-tinted lenses and barely mentioning "the bad".

Did it occur to him that those authors may not have wanted to detract from the main point and risk becoming unfocused? The type of people who'd be reading those "optimism" books are not children, but people who already are aware of the less-rosier sides of life. And because gosh, it's just SO very hard to find books and articles on social and cultural issues, and the full spectrum of horrible things people have done to one another.

It is unsurprising his worldview is narrow; when one already believes they hold all the answers, they tend to stop looking further, and have a tendency to live in the past. It's like he's still living in an Anglo-Saxon country of the 1950s-1970s (the book was published in 2015), just updated to the modern moral codes that are currently in fashion, with some occasional current events thrown in to seem like he's informed. (Found out later, yes, he was born in the 1940s in the UK, raised, educated, and taught in the UK)

As a result of his biases, there was a lot of conjecture. Much of what was stated are rather based on the author's personal impressions. Though I agreed with a few points of his (after all, even a broken clock is right twice a day), his statements tended to be overgeneralizations devoid of nuance and not entirely accurate, applying a bizarre mixture of news headlines, old English literature, and Western philosophy.

And for not even a 200 page book, how is it that there are so many irrelevant digressions?

In sum, the author is full of opinions on topics he knows as much as the average person in the mid-20th century (but apparently quite unaware of how little he knows), outdated in much of his worldviews (circa mid-20th century), limited in his worldview (possessing distinctly U.K. biases, i.e., American biases are different), and smugly critical of others who have differing opinions or perspectives. Very distasteful.

We live in a world where we have come to believe that hope and optimism are synonyms. And that optimism is an unequivocal good. This book is a curative for both of these notions. Optimism is a disposition – in effect it is a preference to believe things are going well regardless of the evidence. This, in itself, isn’t a bad thing – but it is of less consequence than people think. As Eagleton says, whether you think the glass is half-full or half-empty, the quantity of liquid in the glass remains the same. Hope is of quite a different character. Sure, it can be misplaced, but it is something you can act upon. Whereas optimism tends to encourage inaction and acceptance. Optimism also has been associated with the growing phases of Capitalism. As he makes clear at one point, there was hardly a tragic Late-Victorian novel – and so Thomas Hardy’s novels stand out for that fact alone.

Optimism needs nothing but itself to feed upon – and so we can reflect on those who pit themselves Job-like against the cruelty of God in His bet with the devil to retain our faith regardless as this act of faith was the highest moral virtual. But hope endures through catastrophe due to the presence of contingency. This is made clear in Eagleton’s discussion of King Lear – one of those plays that ends with virtually every character dead. As he says, it is possible to see this end as having been otherwise – and every one of Shakespeare’s sources for the play ends thus. It is in this contingency that our hope for a better world can be based.

I really loved this book. I’ve long refused to be called an optimist, but only because I’ve always felt uncomfortable in being optimistic in a world where everything appears to be getting worse and optimism would place me on the same side as Pinker and Gates. Here I can choose hope over optimism – it is a trade I would make every day.

Geç kapitalizm bir hayli umutsuzdur.

Tüketici benlik, üretici benlikten farklı olarak, anlatıya benzer herhangi bir şeydense, zamanın seri haldeki şu ya da bu anında ikamet eder. I appreciated this one but I do think that Eagleton's later stuff shows the writer's age a bit. The guy was still citing almost exclusively the old guard of literary studies in 2015, and it makes the whole thing a bit stale. There's a thriving discussion about hope in feminist literature that's been absolutely abuzz since the 90s and the absence of a substantial engagement with that literature here hampers the argument I feel. It's not that Eagleton is sexist, I just think he's gotten really really far behind the curve because he was used to being on the frontier for so long. Like why is Raymond Williams getting 57 citations in this 130 page essay while bell hooks gets none? I'm sorry but 20th century Marxist bigwigs, you gotta freshen up your reading lists a bit.

I wanted to like this one more than I did. Partly that's because I was hoping this would be more of a how-to guide: how to have hope without optimism. Instead, it's Eagleton investigating the many philosophical and literary references to hope. There are some great, almost aphoristic lines in here, but they're buried among very dense academese and lots of references to Marx and Christianity that went over my head.

I started reading this after the disastrous Biden/Trump debate when it seemed like the 2024 election was doomed. By the time I finished, the Harris-Walz ticket was bringing joy and hope to millions. I don't know what it says about me that I turned to a literary critic in a moment of despair, but let's not dwell on that, okay?
