Destiny's Awakening: A Black Dahlia Novel
Some stories are chosen. Others are written for you.
Aster never asked for the Mothers’ attention—nor the power they forced upon her. But their Gifts do not come gently. They carve, they consume, and they bind her to a destiny she does not yet understand.
At first, it feels like strength. Like purpose.
But power always demands a cost.
As the bond between Aster and her sisters—Violet and Zinnia—begins to fracture, that cost reveals itself in ways none of them are prepared to face. Secrets deepen. Loyalties shift. And the line between devotion and destruction grows dangerously thin.
Because the Mothers do not give without purpose.
And when Aster is faced with a choice that will alter not only her fate, but the lives of those she loves most, she will learn a truth far more dangerous than power itself:
Some destinies demand to be fulfilled—no matter the cost.
Perfect for readers who enjoy epic fantasy with emotional depth, complex sisterhood, and the slow unraveling of destiny.

About the author
Kristine Jones
1 book34 followersKristine Jones was born and raised in Northern California, where she spent much of her life surrounded by rural landscapes that would later influence the atmosphere of her stories. A lifelong reader, she fell in love with storytelling at an early age and quickly became fascinated by the way words could shape entire worlds, relationships, and destinies.
The idea for The Black Dahlia Series first came to her in a dream: a world built on matriarchal, elemental magic, and a young woman torn from her family before she could fully understand her own destiny. Taken by a man determined to use her people’s legendary power to build a better future for his own, the story became the foundation for the world of the Mothers, destiny, sacrifice, and legacy that now defines the series.
What began during the COVID-19 pandemic as a creative outlet quickly grew into a passion she could not step away from. Since then, Kristine has continued expanding the world and stories surrounding the Black Dahlia novels.
When she isn’t writing, she enjoys reading, spending time with her son, and life in Northern California alongside her two dogs, Dozer and Luna. Some of her favorite authors include Stephen King, John Grisham, Isabel Canas, Sarah J. Maas, and Cassandra Clare. Stories that have stayed with her over the years include Family, The Chamber, The Dark Tower, and The Dark Artifices.

4.5 ⭐️!!
Absolutely stunning novel - loss of 1/2 of a star because there wasn’t MORE. Everything else is a 5-star rating!
I. Am. Rocked. To my core. And I really don’t even have the words to form this review, but here we go.
If you are looking for a happy go-lucky, chosen-one FMC fantasy novel, Destiny’s Awakening isn’t for you. Turn around. Do not pass go, do not collect $100.
Destiny’s Awakening is an epic fantasy journey that will likely never be made famous on booktok, but that also exactly why you need to pick it up.
An epic fantasy full of adventure, power, tribulations, love, heartbreak, and so much more grief than you ever expected to experience between these pages.
I’m pretty sure I cried in AT LEAST 45% of these chapters. 😅 but I’m so lucky to have experienced so much empathy and adoration for these characters.
There are major year gaps, but for valid reasons. You meet Aster just before her unwinding at 21 and see her through to the end of her life. It reads as a memoir written by Aster and is so well done!
Technically, yes, Destiny’s Awakening is a series starter - book 2 is aiming to be out in January 2027 - BUT Aster’s journey starts and ends here. The series appears to be continuing the story of her bloodline and the power (but also the responsibilities and choices that come with it) - and you can bet your bottom dollar I will be continuing on that journey, but I understand why others may not.
You absolutely need to add this your epic fantasy TBR!

To start off want to give a big THANK YOU to be apart of this ARC read. The book sucks you into it right away and it’s hard to put down. I felt such a strong connection with my emotions through this book just be ready to feel it all. And I am genuinely excited for the second one!!!!
Destiny's Awakening follows a protagonist who is forced to confront long-buried truths about themselves as events begin unfolding far beyond their control. What starts as a personal journey quickly expands into a larger struggle involving loyalty, power, and the weight of destiny itself. As new allies and adversaries emerge, relationships are tested, hidden motives come to light, and difficult choices shape the path ahead. The story balances moments of action and suspense with emotional character growth, gradually revealing a world where the past and present are more deeply connected than anyone realizes.

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my thoughts or rating.
This book really took me on an emotional journey I wasn’t prepared for. This fantasy story is filled with magic, destiny, love and sacrifice.
Aster’s journey broke my heart. She was faced with a destiny she never asked for and the weight of the choices she had to make was heartbreaking.
The relationships in this story were my favorite part. The love, loyalty and sacrifices between the characters felt so real. The sisterhood and family bonds were complicated, painful and powerful. Aster’s relationship with her husband was beautiful and brought so much heart to her journey.
Kristine Jones created a world filled with magic and characters that made me feel so many emotions. This story reminded me that love can come with sacrifice and sometimes the hardest choices are made for the people we love most.
I cried many tears reading this one. It was a journey filled with love, loss and moments that will stay with me.

I received this as an advanced copy! And this is my honest review.
This book is so…special. I could feel everything, the sadness, the happiness, the love. The characters really make you feel like you are a part of the story. There is so much empowerment. I got absolutely sucked into this. I cried so many times. Just wow. I can’t wait for the next book, truly.

Very emotionally full and this definitely takes you on a journey.
There definitely could be a little more filled out with characters BUT I imagine we will see more in the coming book(s?) and be able to understand more.
This was beautiful, tearful and a very good read.

A huge thank you to the author, Kristine Jones for allowing me to be an ARC reader for this story and sharing it with me!!
I think that the main thing here is that I was unfortunately not the target audience for this book. It has an interesting plot and it has a good presence for the “Mothers” (the gods in the book).
The sibling dynamics are so accurate to real life that I did enjoy that quite a bit too. The bickering between the sisters and the way they could read each other’s minds felt very accurate to my real life and my relationship with my siblings.
Unfortunately that is not what I look for in a book. The whole thing never slowed down. The actual story has to exposition, you’re just launched into it. I felt like I didn’t get to know the characters at all at the beginning. It felt like a lot of the relationships didn’t develop on paper as much as they should have. All of the characters just sort of said “sure, okay” when their whole life was upended by gods they barely even believed in.
It just felt unrealistic to me and frustrating because I didn’t know the characters well enough to understand why they would do that.
I think I’m just too much of a character driven reader to have enjoyed this story that is very, very plot driven.

ARC REVIEW
WOW. 🤯 Just. WOWWWWWW. I’m not even sure how to go about describing how this book affected me. In so many emotional and spiritual ways.
I truly connected with this book ON SO MANY LEVELS!
For starters. Talk about “the circle of life” both physically and spiritually! The ebb and flow of love, loss, gain, strength, family… Kristine you broke my heart in so many ways but not all in a bad way. As this story webbed through each step stone called life, I found myself reflecting on my own life.. the death of the women in my life. What they left behind. What my husband I instill into our sons. And honestly, this book left me broken in all of the best ways!
If I can say anything about this book. It’s read it. Read it with all of your heart, your soul, your being. Leave everything behind and embrace all of this. You may come back out looking at the world, the worlds… with a more open heart, more open mind… and clearer eyes…
Kristine..: chef’s kiss lady…. I’m ready for the next one ♥️

Grips the heartstrings and takes you for a ride throughout!
A tale of sisterhood, family, and sacrifices, our MC builds a new future for her people with the help of the Mothers. We are brought into her new world as it is built facing all adversities with her.
Note to reader: as with any new series, it has to be built. Once the foundation is laid though, ahhhh! I couldn’t put it down
I read this as an ARC and am leaving my review on my own accord.

Kristine Jones has deftly written Destiny's Awakening as the first in a three book series. The story, from a long ago time, revolves around Aster, a young woman who is made "Consari" by five spirit "Mothers" who advise/control Aster through her dreams/subconscience. Her charge, with her two sisters in tow, is to find her Chieftain and rebuild a broken society. She falls for Lysander, whom she was preordained to meet, but perfectly complements Aster.
Trouble brews when Aster's sister Violet leaves in a huff and falls for a rough, violent Faustian prince. Aster must balance her desire to keep her family together with her charge to rebuild and lead the community.
Kristine Jones expertly weaves in details from the era (Summer Solstice, temples, wedding rituals) and depicts a slow-developing, but nonetheless gripping tale of a family torn apart, a woman grappling with her own choices over several decades, and a magical group of five Mothers in a spiritual afterlife.

Thank you to Kristine as she let me be an ARC reader for her book!
This book completely pulled me into Aster’s story from the very beginning. The bond between Aster and her sisters, Violet and Zinnia, is incredibly powerful, and watching them begin their journey together made me instantly invested. Seeing their relationships tested throughout the story was both heartbreaking and compelling. The Mothers, with their secrets and the Gifts they bestow, created an atmosphere of mystery and tension that kept me turning the pages.
The ending left me excited to see where the series goes next. If you enjoy fantasy that blends magic, strong family relationships, emotional stakes, and darker themes, this is definitely a book worth picking up.

July 31, 2026Thank you Kristine Jones for the opportunity to ARC read Destiny’s Awakening.
Thirteen year old me would have loved this book. I would have thought it was so romantic and whimsical. Unfortunately, I am 35 and this just doesn’t compute at my age. I think the book should be marketed as young adult because it seems to have been written with teens in mind. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that and I’m sure many young adults will enjoy this one but it’s just not for me.

What an amazing book of hope, love, loss, grief, and forgiveness.
The love you feel while reading about this place makes you want to never leave. The characters and world that were written are breathtaking. You are overjoyed in one moment and crying in another. I truly didn’t want it to end.
I can’t wait until book two comes and read this journey in Messa.

Thank you Kristine, for allowing your book to be my first ARC book. I hope it does so well for you! For me, I’ve found I like really fleshed out backstories, world building over chapters, and begin a journey bringing out the characters. I felt I missed some of that while reading this book. I hope anyone reading all these reviews, give her book a chance. It may have not ticked all my boxes but you might find it does for you! Good luck with all your books @Kristine Jones

I had the privilege of reading an ARC of this book! This is Kristine Jones’ debut novel and is independently published.
This story was definitely really interesting and different from other books in the genre that I’ve read. This book has serious heart, and there were points in the story that actually made me shed some tears. For me though, I feel like some of the characters and elements of the backstory were underdeveloped, which made it hard for me to connect and empathize with them at times. Overall though, I would read more books in this universe.

4.5🌟 I dont know what I expected going into this ARC but it exceeded my expectations. The FMC on her 21st birthday is elected to become a leader by the Mother's of the land. She makes a deal with them and you just can not prepare yourself for what unfolds. What a wonderfully well written story! This is a series and I will be continuing it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book!
There were moments when I was smiling ear to ear at the interactions between the sisters and others. I also adored Lysander and the relationship he had with Aster throughout the story.
Kristine Jones writes very well. I enjoyed her writing style, the characters kept me engaged, and the world she created was so vivid that I could imagine every moment as it unfolded.
This was also the first e-book I have read in a long time, and I am so glad I chose this one!
I cannot wait for Book 2!
I received an advance reader copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.

Thank you Kristine for the opportunity to have an ARC of this beautiful book!!!!!
“The spark of life is my Gift. Of all the powers offered to you, the flames require the deepest sacrifice. Wield them wisely, or they will wield you.”
“Every time you open that door, you’re stuck with one foot in the past and the other fighting to carry you into the present. Spend too much time looking back, and you’ll wake up one day to realize you missed the greatest days of your life.”
This story isn't just a tale, it's an entire experience. I went in expecting a fantasy adventure - and there are elements of that, sure - but it really is much deeper than that. This is almost genre-bending in the way it combines the backdrop of a fantasy setting & plot against a multi-generational story that spans decades. I found myself growing so attached to the sisters, the Mothers, and the other characters, and I experienced such a roller coaster of emotions watching their choices play out. There were so many paths Aster and her family could have taken, so many choices, and so many consequences. I really couldn’t put the book down because I had to know what was going to happen next.
The descriptions in this story are amazing. Right from the first visit to the Mothers, I was entranced. I felt like I could see Monassa so clearly, and it gave me so many different feelings - sometimes it was eerie, sometimes magical, sometimes hopeful. This was SO creative and translated really well on the page.
I also loved the dichotomy of the patriarchy vs the matriarchy here. We got to see the extremes of two societies and I really thought it worked so well to emphasize the differences. I know some parts were exaggerated, but it only served to bring out the specific (and sometimes horrific) consequences of characters’ certain actions. I was disturbed by some of it and I felt sorry for some of them, but I also thought it was a necessary evil within the story. Violet and Aster’s story was such a foundational piece of the entire book and I felt it so deeply throughout.
The overarching theme of religion is almost cult-like in the way Aster had to accept the Mother’s bargain and spread the word to the Monari citizens. I found myself conflicted in how I really felt about this throughout the story. As much as I loved Aster and Lysander, I didn’t know if I could just blindly accept their ‘mission’ and was curious how that would play out as they visited the towns. It was the only part of the book I was a little iffy on, because there wasn’t a ton of explanation of Aster’s powers or scenes of her really using them. But later in the story, when there is tension within the family and some of Aster’s own start to question and push back, I found that really believable. I hated the conflict but I think that’s when the whole story clicked for me: this wasn’t necessarily about magic powers, but rather about choices, consequences, and blind faith. If a reader goes in understanding that as the main point, they will REALLY enjoy it.
Lastly, do not skip the look ahead to book 2: this book sets the foundation, but I think we’re really going to get cooking in the next one. It made me SO excited.

I received an Advanced Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I really went back and forth on what to rate this book. My experience of the first half was between 1 and 2 stars, but I did enjoy the second half more, and even read it all in one day, because I really wanted to figure out what this book was about and decide how I was going to review it. I think it just took a long time to feel like there was a real plot and characters to care about. This book has a lot of really interesting ideas that could have been developed so much more. I often felt like I was reading an outline or rough draft of a novel rather than a fully-formed story. The world this book exists in appears so blurry still.
I’m giving this a 2.5 stars, and allowing it to show as three here, because I do believe this author deserves a chance and will improve over time. I think more rounds of editing and really thinking about what the essence, or purpose, of a story is, needs to come before publication.
The ending of this book did get me feeling a bit emotional, but there were many other points I believe the author wanted me to feel that kind of emotion and I just didn’t. Most of the characters did not feel fully-formed. The fantasy aspect of this book was also very underdeveloped. Conflict came and went without really a central issue to carry the story. I didn’t feel as a reader I had much choice in deciding my own perspective on what the characters are going through. We are told the Mothers are good, and it’s simply never contradicted. But who are they? Where did they come from? How exactly does giving out their powers benefit them? They are just as mysterious in the end as they are in the beginning.
I think this is a story about family, but it took me awhile to understand that. I would suggest any interested readers go into this book with less of a fantasy outlook, and more of a family history outlook. Even then, the last portion of this book is pretty rushed, and I would have liked to see a lot more of Aster’s later years.
All in all, I don’t think I’ll be continuing with this series, but I do believe and hope that this author, who so generously allowed me to receive an advanced copy of her book, will continue to work on her craft and develop the interesting ideas she has into more well-developed stories.
Review of advance copy received from Author
Reading this book brought along a lot of different emotions. I’ve never read a book quite like this one. The setting is in a far off land. The beginnings of an undiscovered territory being founded under the guidance of “The Mothers”.
It gives religious - borderline culty vibes to me. Our FMC is Aster. She is chosen by The Mothers to be ordained as the first Consari of Monari. And this story is her memoire of her life. Her destiny as the chosen one. Her struggles, her love, her loss her family.
She trudges through after finding her destined partner and chieftain, Lysander and they create a safe haven for the people of Monari, promising to use the gifts (powers from the Mothers) to provide peace and never using the gifts for selfish reasons.
I love the sisterhood bond that is a huge aspect throughout the book. It heartbreaking and tragic the lives these sisters each endure.
Kristin jones paints the scenery seamlessly. It’s so easy to visualize the characters, where they are and what is around them. Emerging myself into the scene as a read.
This book made me cry. Made me angry. Made me giggle and tingle. It’s heart breaking and beautiful. It’s tragic and dark at times.
Realizing this is all a memoire of Aster, and how she was able to remain vigilant in her beliefs through all her losses and struggles I was happy with the end when she finds peace in the after life. Making the read fulfilling. Though there are a few points I still want to see resolved between characters like Samson, Zinnia and her husband and their family and friends that traveled to remote lands, her niece Meera and the future of Faustia that is heavily implied to have an arc of its own as they have sacrificed so much to keep that side open with the connection between the Consari and violets door on the solstice. This story has much more I cannot wait to read in future sequels. There was loss, love and joy.
I have this book a 4/5 due to some confusion in unresolved characters and plot points that o hope will come up in book two. I also personally would like more action and purpose to the Consari.
Overall a great read that is different and engaging with vivid scenery and character depth.

Destiny’s Awakening is basically a six star read for me - hands down the best advanced reader edition I’ve read this year and I hope it’s incredibly successful for the author! I am 1000% invested in book 2, especially after experiencing the founding of the Consari, witnessing the Faustian drama, and getting a sneak peek of Book 2 after the epilogue.
I love how the author wrote this as a memoir. It absolutely felt that way in a heartfelt, personal way. It leaves room for various interpretations beyond Aster’s experience but also feels like a primary source account. I can only imagine how this will set us up for the future.
I am absolutely in awe of how the author has crafted this world, how she’s made me literally freaking cry (multiple times!) over these characters because I fell so so connected to them and their story.
I ADORE Lysander + Aster’s relationship. It feels so real. They have fairytale love but with very believable tension and drama. This felt like the ‘Slice of Life’ and pacing I’ve been hungering for. So many stories take space over short time frames with HUGE stakes and it’s refreshing to read a fic that spans decades and where the emphasis is on the people experiencing the conflict than the actual conflict itself.
I know there are a million other rambles and connections to fan over, but I’m still processing everything. I left with a bittersweet feeling and am truly emotionally touched in a way I hardly feel as a reader.
Thank you so much to the author for the opportunity to read an early copy of The Black Dahlia series. So freaking excited by the vision you’ve laid out for the series.
TL;DR: This is a must read for those who love slice of life, matriarchal societies, and sisterly bonds. It starts off quite cozy and filled with very fluffy moments (the good kind!) throughout. That said, it does have some darker elements that add depth and angst. Overall, this is a well-balanced fic with thoughtfully developed characters and emotional moments that will have you reaching for the tissues

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4.5/5 Stars
I had such a wonderful time reading Destiny's Awakening.
The story begins with a slower pace, giving you time to settle into the world, get to know the characters, and really appreciate the relationships being built. It never felt boring to me—it felt intentional. That slower start made everything that came later hit so much harder.
And then...Chapter 49 happened.
Absolutely not.
If you've read it, you know.
One of my favorite parts of this book was the relationship between the sisters. Their love for one another felt genuine, supportive, and incredibly heartfelt. It's refreshing to read a fantasy where those family bonds are given so much care, and they ended up being one of the emotional anchors of the story for me.
I also loved the way the story is told through the lens of a memoir. It gave the book a unique feel and made me even more invested in seeing how everything unfolded.
And can we talk about Lysander for a second? No shadow daddies here—get yourself a Lysander. He completely won me over.
Kristine Jones has created a beautiful fantasy filled with heart, hope, and characters you'll genuinely care about. By the time I reached the end, I was completely invested in their journey and already looking forward to seeing what comes next.
If you enjoy character-driven fantasy with strong emotional moments, meaningful family relationships, and a romance that grows naturally alongside the story, I definitely recommend picking this one up.
Thank you to Kristine Jones for the opportunity to read and review an ARC. All opinions are my own.

There is something special about receiving a physical ARC in the mail directly from the author, sitting down with the paper copy, and getting completely lost in a story.
And Destiny's Awakening was even better than I hoped!
Aster's journey pulled me in from the start. As she discovers the power awakening inside her, she has to figure out who she can trust, what her destiny really means, and whether she can choose her own path or if fate has already decided it for her.
What I loved most was watching Aster grow from someone trying to understand her new reality into someone who begins questioning everything around her. Her relationships with Violet and Zinnia add even more emotion, especially as secrets, loyalty, and destiny begin colliding.
TROPES AND THEMES
Awakening powers
Destiny vs free will
Sisterhood
Hidden secrets
Power with consequences
Fate and prophecy
Complicated relationships
Loyalty and betrayal
Personal transformation
Discovering your true identity
Emotional character journey
If you love stories about powerful awakenings, complicated family bonds, destiny, secrets, and characters discovering who they are meant to become, add this to your TBR.
I finished this one wanting more of Aster's story, and I can't wait to see where the Black Dahlia series goes next.

I need to start by saying I do not believe I was the target audience for this book. It is out of my normal realm but I opted to finish the book because I was chosen as an ARC reader and received this book in exchange for an honest review.
Although not my normal taste the author had beautiful writing. Illustrative descriptions of both the landscape and characters. And intense world building.
This is a largely religious based book. Although the religion is unique to this story following “the mothers”. With the FMC being chosen by “the mothers” to bring about a new time to their world; with her as their voice to the people.
It follows the lives the FMC, her family, and extended family during the time of “the mothers”. It is a multi-generational story that contains many time jumps. Some only days or moments but others stretching decades. With these jumps there was a lack of satisfaction with the descriptions of why the jumps happened and left me as the reader guessing what happened, why, and what was going on at that point. I found this distracting.
There is no spice, only a closed doored descriptions and insinuations. Destined love stories, twisted love, family love this book had all of it.
Although the first half of the book is very angelical, it does take a turn.
There are graphic and sad scenes in the book, child loss, murder, banishment, families torn apart, rape, etc.
I am grateful I was given the opportunity to read this book and think it will do very well with its target audience.

First off thank you Kristine for letting me be an ARC reader for you.
Destiny’s Awakening is a fantasy novel that highlights a sisterhood and their life’s journey and how life can take a total different path with one simple choice. Destined to find their soulmates they must trust the Mothers and not stray from the ways otherwise the consequences could be grave. “They said every path had a price to be paid". In the beginning of the book it was a little confusing to understand where the character's came from (background piece, what made them, them). The characters seemed to willing to go along with whatever was thrown at them, no one seemed to question or have any push back. I love how I could relate pieces of this novel to my personal life, one small step could cause a wave of changes throughout your life. Makes you really sit back and ponder if you chosen the right path. Definitely a must read, it is not your typical copy and paste fantasy book which I really enjoyed exploring something different. I am really looking forward to the second book!
“Every time you open that door, you’re stuck with one foot in the past and the other fighting to
carry you into the present. Spend too much time looking back and you’ll wake up one day to realize that you missed the greatest days of your life.”

3⭐ | Destiny's Awakening
⚠️ ARC Review
📅 Releases August 7
This one gave me a lot to think about.
At its heart, Destiny's Awakening is a story about three sisters, purpose, and one question that follows Aster through the entire book:
Do they a have a choice?
After Aster is chosen by the Mothers, her life changes forever. Throughout the story, choice becomes a recurring theme—but so do consequences.
I actually flew through this book. Kristine Jones tells Aster's story in a way that kept me reading, and I especially enjoyed the strong familial relationships between Aster, Violet, and Zinnia.
The quote that stayed with me was:
"Memory is a cruel thing, you see. Hindsight can be unforgiving in its clarity."
Where I struggled was with the premise of the Mothers. The story emphasizes that everyone has a choice, yet refusing the Mothers often brings devastating consequences. For me, that tension made it difficult to reconcile the idea of destiny with true free will.
I also went in expecting an epic fantasy. While there is another world and magic, I found this to be much more of a character-driven story about one woman's journey, her family, and the weight of the choices placed before her.
If you enjoy fantasy that explores destiny, sacrifice, and the bonds between sisters, this may be one for your TBR.

I received a digital ARC edition from the author. I was asked to provide an honest review on the book.
Overall, this was an emotional ride. The highs were high and the lows were low. The story does have some romance, but no spice. It's perfect for people who enjoy feel-good stories with some added heartbreak.
Two of my favorite quotes:
Lysander:
"Do you feel it?" His eyes closed, and he hummed along with the melody, face serene. "It's a song. It’s our song.”
Zinnia:
"Be the pebble that changes everything, sister."
Lysander was a gem of a husband. The Mothers did Aster a solid having this man at her side through every twist and turn.
From Chapter 49 on, I don't think I've cried this much in a book. The Splintering broke me first. I had to stop and step away after that. My heart shattered. Then, having Zinnia and Tyrus also leave, that hurt too.
My heart appreciated the twist to have Aster begin visiting Lili and taking the steps to build a relationship with her instead of continuing to follow Vi. I really wanted to know if she changed Faustia. Speaking more on Faustia, GOOD RIDDENCE GARRETT!!
I have so much more I could say, but I'll leave my review at that. I can't wait for books 2 and 3 to be released!

This book did things to me I was not expecting! What stands out the most is that it really made me sit and think.. What would you do, if on the eve of your 21st birthday you were transported in a dream to meet with "the mothers", spiritual deities who offered you a bargain which would completely change your life and hold you responsible for guiding your nation onto a new path? I think it would take someone with a very strong character and a pure heart to take on the challenges Asther does without almost a second thought, honestly I don't know if I could have done it.. This is an incredibly thought provoking read, and emotional as we watch how the path Asther chooses leads to both happiness and grief, how despite all best intentions her bond with her sister unravels but how possibly all is not lost...
The way this book wove so beautifully and intricately through Aster and her family's life from a young girl just starting to walk her path to her final days.. And what a life it was.
I truly cannot recommend this book enough but be warned, tissues will be required for the final chapters. Thank you so much Kristine for giving me the opportunity to read an advanced copy of this very special book!

I really went back and forth on how to rate this book!
I enjoyed the storyline. I had mixed feelings at first on how much time we traveled through, but I think I enjoyed being on their journey from the beginning to the end. 🤍
I did knock two stars because I really, really, really wish there was more character development. ☹️ I feel like everything was just so rushed in the first half and I didn't get to grow and develop with the characters. There were some names that I had to reference back to because I couldn't quite remember their relevance; and a lot of that was because we didn't spend a lot of time with them.
Also, there were some parts of the story that seemed off to me.. like Jon in the Splintering. There wasn't any follow up to that part of the story. I also wish that there was more development to Violet's side of the story. It just felt very random that she up and left. I did enjoy the solstice meetings. 🥲
One last thought - I wish Aster would have used her power more. I don't feel like her magic ever really came into play except when visiting the Mothers and on the solstice!

Destiny's Awakening is the first of the Black Dahlia series. It follows Aster and her sisters as they journey to make their lives, and the lives of their people after a visit from The Mothers, who are the gods in this world.
In my opinion, there was what I consider too much plot. I would have liked to see more world building. From the very beginning, the characters are going from one thing to the next with hardly a break in between.
There are alot of family dynamics in this book. I loved the relationship between Aster and her sisters, and even her parents. Aster's relationship with The Mothers was a big part of the story as well.
There are some time jumps throughout. The story brings you throughout all of Aster's adult life.
Overall the book was well written and easy to understand. It seemed more Young Adult to me, but there were also aspects of the book that are not considered appropriate for young readers. I did enjoy reading it, even with the extra fast pace.
Thank you Kristine Jones for the opportunity to read this book early

I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the author of Destiny's Awakening, Kristine Jones, for selecting me as one of her ARC readers in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
Every day, we face choices that can lead us down many paths: some good, some bad, and some great. Nothing is ever certain. That is Destiny's Awakening. This story followed the paths of three sisters and their extended family. Each one grew and made choices that shaped their future along the way. The detail and love that went into describing the characters and environments truly brought everything to life. I couldn't help but connect with all of them in so many different ways, taking me on an emotional rollercoaster the whole way through. I cannot wait for the next book to continue the adventure. If you are looking to connect with characters who will challenge you emotionally on the paths they take, this book is great for you.
