With book three in the series, we arrive at Graham and Kara's story. I have enjoyed watching them secretly crush on each other from the beginning and get to know them through the series. Graham is one of the older boxers on the Marine boxing team with a steady head and easy going nature. Kara is the friend of Marianne the PT and the yoga instructor hired to work on flexibility with the team. Kara has a son with severe food allergies and carries the burden of single parenting while dealing with her selfish ex's shenanigans. While she is happy to see the way Graham has connected with her son and doesn't seem to mind all that comes with him, she is gunshy of any relationship knowing the issues that come with dating her. So she attempts to keep Graham at arm's length even as the determined Marine has no intentions of letting the woman of his dreams push him away.

As noted, this is book three in the series. The stories are connected even if the main couple has changed. The ongoing issue of the saboteur and training for the All-Military tournament have progressed plus this couple was introduced in book one and their story is tangled with the others.

Kara has a lousy ex who got her pregnant while she was still in high school and then walked away because he was just sleeping with the young, naive girl. Her parents threw her out of the house when they found out and it was only by her own tough, hard work and a few loyal friends including Marianne's family that she survived and made it to where she is. She had the work of building up her yoga business and also working with her son's severe food allergies. Now things are more stable, but her ex is making noises to reduce his already piddling child support. Along with this, she meets a decent guy who seems open to dating a single mom with a complex kid, but how can she when her ex won't sign off on his parental rights which forces her to be tied to the state until Zach is eighteen? Graham is military and he will have to move so a long-term and long-distance relationship would be like trapping him. So no, it is best that she push him away. Only Graham won't take the hint.

Graham is a solid JAG lawyer for the military, has a supportive family, and loves being on the Marine Boxing Team, but what really has his interest is beautiful, strong and independent Kara. He has gone gently with her knowing that she has a past that includes a loser who took advantage of her and Graham is also careful to cultivate a relationship with her son. He wants them both. Now if only he can convince Kara that he doesn't care about the complications and it's alright to allow someone to help her. His focus is divided between Kara and the escalating acts of sabotage to the boxing team. He and the other leaders have decided that enough is enough. The MPs can't give it their entire focus so it is time for the team to step up and work on it. It has to be someone close to the team and if they are vigilant they can catch him or her in the act.

So, this was book three. Like the others, it is more focused on the relationship with the training time and issues with the saboteur taking a back seat though happily the big reveal on the saboteur does finally come to a conclusion in this book. Unlike some books that feature military heroes and military settings this one really isn't about that. It's more along the lines of a typical, gently-paced heartwarming Contemporary Romance. The barriers are not tension or passion-laiden and the conflict is more internal though yes, there is a spike near the end when things got exciting with the sabotage part. I was glad to see that the author brought that to a close. I smugly nodded to see that the culprit was the one I chose from back in book one.

As to the characters, Graham is a likable hero. He was steady, understanding, fun-loving and good for Kara. He was romantic. My only niggle was that he is not as developed as Kara. His backstory is touched on, but not spotlighted. He gets narration time, but his thoughts and dialogue are mostly in the here and now. I would have enjoyed learning more about him especially as he was a military lawyer. Not to say that he didn't have a strong presence because he did, but he came as a put together person unlike his heroine who had a lot of growing to do.

It is Kara that the focus settles on. I was a little leery going in because I knew Kara was pushing Graham away when there is nothing wrong with Graham. I was worried that her issues would be piddly things and then I'd get annoyed at her for dinking around with a good guy. But as it turned out, even if her issues were built up more in her mind than in reality, she had a legit reason to be off putting about a relationship.
Her ex liked his power trips so he had her convinced that if she rocked the boat and tried to change the status quo that he would go for more custody and pay less support. I see this sort of blackmail all the time with my job so I know how it works and unfortunately the responsible parent does have to take it seriously because it does work. This guy wanted nothing to do with his son, but to make Kara pay and feel the thrill of controlling her, he would take her through the cost of court that she couldn't afford and the fear that if he got more time with his son then she would have the stress of knowing that while he had Zach that her son's food allergies would be a matter of concern. So yeah, the barrier in this one was frustrating, but real.
Fortunately for Kara, Graham is a lawyer and has some knowledge of family law so the biggest barrier is her learning to let others help. Her pride gets in her way. And the pride is understandable, too. She had to face the shame of being a teen mom, parents that turned their back on her, and living on state assistance before learning yoga and building her own business so her pride and gumption was all she had. It's hard for her to change now, but she has to do it if she stands a chance of freeing herself from her ex and getting a chance with Graham.

In the end, I loved how the author made it about Kara's triumph and the reward of a family with Graham. I don't know if this is the last book in the series since it feels like it could be with a few story arcs finishing with this one. It was a gentler series than I expected since it featured military guys and boxing, but I still enjoyed curling up with each book and engaging with the characters. I would recommend this to those who like the easy going heartwarming and slightly spicy Contemporary Romances.

My thanks to Penguin Group for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

4.5 stars - My review cross-posted from Wit and Sin: http://witandsin.blogspot.com/2016/02...

Fight to the Finish is sexy, funny, and completely addictive. I’ve been dying to read Kara and Graham’s story since they first struck sparks off one another in Below the Belt, and author Jeanette Murray did not disappoint. Kara and Graham’s book is a wonderful blend of reality and romantic fantasy – aka the perfect kind of story to be swept away by.

Graham won me over from the start. He’s a sexy-as-hell Marine and a lawyer to boot, but it’s his incredibly open heart that grabbed my attention. He’s head-over-heels for Kara and fully admits it to himself, but he’s patient and respectful of her boundaries. He’s generous to a fault, but no doormat. Graham is essentially the perfect combination of strength and protectiveness with a healthy dose of sensuality and humor thrown in. I loved that he not only fell for Kara, he developed a father-son relationship with her son, Zach, that stood on its own two feet and wasn’t a by-product of his burgeoning relationship with Kara. As for Kara, she’s a single mom who has worked her tail off making a life for her son. I admired her strength, resilience, and her intelligence. Life isn’t easy for Kara, between her son’s severe food allergies and Zach’s deadbeat dad. Going into Fight to the Finish , I was a bit worried what I’d think of Kara’s reasons for pushing Graham away (since it’s been obvious throughout the series he has a thing for her). The obstacles in Kara’s path aren’t merely ones thrown in for romantic tension. I won’t spoil the story, so suffice it to say her ex is a jerk who would ruin her life and Zach’s if he could. Ms. Murray makes every obstacle in Graham and Kara’s path worth overcoming, because these two are downright fantastic as a couple. Their romance is the perfect blend of sexy and sweet.

Fight to the Finish is the third book in the First to Fight series. What makes this series as a whole so charming are the relationships between the main characters. Brad, Marianne, Greg, and Reagan (from Below the Belt and Against the Ropes) all play strong supporting roles and the book would not have been the same without them. The friendships are an integral part of the story, adding a lot of humor and even more heart to the tale. Add in the resolution of the mystery involving who is trying to sabotage the Marine Corps boxing team and you have an incredibly full, interesting story.

All three First to Fight books have featured smart, likeable, mature characters, and Fight to the Finish is no exception. I absolutely adored Kara and Graham and I am completely enamored with their romance. I finished Fight to the Finish a well-satisfied reader and I cannot wait to read Graham and Kara’s story again!

4 Graham loving stars!!

Source: eARC for Honest Review Courtesy of Berkley | Penguin Group

This book was my driving force to finish this series, because Graham stole my heart from Below the Belt and I KNEW he was going to be a total sweetheart.   What can't you love about Graham Sweeney?  He's sexy, smart, generous, considerate, loyal and sweet.

"What's with the clothes?  Denim and snuggling do not mix?"

The minute Graham laid eyes on the sexy yoga instructor he knew he was a goner.  What held him back at first was the fact that Kara came with a son, and he wasn't sure he wanted it all, but the more he got to know her son the more he wanted the whole package.

Kara's best friend's with Marianne, and due to that friendship she got the opportunity to teach the boxers Yoga and Pilates to help with their training. Kara has her struggles, with the enormous challenge of having a child with MANY allergies and an ex from hell.  However, even though I read and understood her hardship I didn't really get the reason why it held her back so much in regards to relationships, as it could have been easy enough to work around.

"Thank me by giving that man a chance.  Don't take the orgasm and run."

Graham knows Kara & her son Zach are it for him.  He just knows he has to be patient if he wants forever, because Kara has thick walls around her and her son.   Kara tries extra hard to keep Graham at bay but his sweet & sexy ways make it hard to refuse causing her to fall just as fast.  Even though she falls doesn't mean she's over her past nor her personal restraints or demons.

"That's a close second to my real favor.  Lean on Graham. Don't just tell him about the big picture. Ask for his advice on this situation.  Don't say you don't want to dump on him.  Or burden him.  Just do it."  (Great Advice and thankfully a heroine listened to it)

Thankfully Kara and Graham have great friends who are rooting for them which helps ease their burden so they can make their relationship a go.  But what would a romance story be without drama? Thankfully it wasn't too much for these two, but too much pride and the continuing vandalism.

Kara grounds Graham and he will do whatever it takes to finally convince her that he's in it for the long haul.

"I didn't tell you so you could hopping off to see her like an antelope frolicking in the meadow.  I told you so you'd have something out there to ground you."

I absolutely loved Graham and wish all men were like him in real life . . . bud sadly this is fiction and not real life, so we can only dream.   In the end I ended up quite liking the series as a whole, but what made it work was the banter and interrelationships between all the characters throughout the series.

Slick's review posted at Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews

I really didn't think that Jeanette Murray's Below the Belt series could get any better, I didn't think I could love these characters anymore and I didn't think that I would love this story as much as I did the others, but I was never so wrong...Fight to the Finish is a glorious and magnificent romance and a spectacular (hee hee) way to end a series!

Yoga instructor, blogger and single Mom Kara has spent the last 10 years of her life devoted to her son and learning to live with all of his food allergies. The struggle has been real, the medications and special foods expensive but she wouldn't change her life for anything. He son, Zach has been worth is all including the headaches and limitation she has because of his sperm donor father. Sexy Marine lawyer Graham Sweeney make her nervous as hell, but knowing it can go nowhere she's resisted his attempts to be more than friends but with her son's hero worship growing stronger every day and the realization that Graham is one of the best men she knows it's becoming harder and harder to keep saying no.

For the last two books it has been very interesting watching Kara and Graham circle around each other and while I liked them both I'll admit I worried a bit about the relationship but Graham showed time and time again that he is not such a good man, but a great one. I'm a sucker for a good guy hero and I'll tell you Graham Sweeney is right up there at the top of the heap with some of my all time favorites. I loved that he took the time to get to know both Kara and Zach and that he wanted to understand everything about Zach's special needs, that he understood Kara's need for control, that he so effortlessly jumped in to assist with Zach when he needed to talk to someone other than his mom, and that he wanted to make Kara's life better even if she didn't want him in it.

There was much at play in this book including the Marine boxing team training for the All Military Games, the mystery of the ongoing vandalism to the boxing team's space, equipment and cars, Kara's legal battles, and the end of the team and everyone moving on after the games. It would have been easy for the romance to get lost especially with a young boy around, but the author did a great job of making sure this couple got time together and not just for intimate times, for comfort, for talking and for falling in love.

I have thoroughly enjoyed each and every book in this series and I am sad to see this series end, but it is going out on such a high note and Ms. Murray should be proud of the outstanding job she's done with not only Fight to the Finish but each and every story in this series. In the words of Marine's everywhere, "Oo-rah!"

I won a paperback ARC of this book. This is the first book I read by Jeanette Murray. I knew it was part of a series but focusing on a new couple. It can be read as a stand-alone but I would recommend you to read the previous books in the series because it will give an insight into the background of the characters. I got confused a couple of times but that didn't hinder me from enjoying the book.

Kara is a single parent to the awesome Zach. This book piqued my interest because of Kara being a single mom. There is just such a strength to these women. Graham was such a great guy. He wasn't an alpha but I didn't mind that at all. I was in the mood for a good light contemporary romance, and this book fit the bill.

Graham is attracted to Kara from the start but Kara is hesitant to start anything serious. There was definitely chemistry between the two. I especially loved the scenes where Graham interacted with Zach, he had such a great way of talking to him. When Kara finally gives in to Graham, it is beautiful to see how he is being supportive of her when she needs it.

I loved the friendship between Kara, Reagan and Marianne. So I will definitely check out the previous books in this series. The writing was also great. I am looking forward to reading more books by Jeanette Murray.

Love that is better the second time around….

It’s so easy to resist a strong, sexy military man, protective, and supportive. Did I say easy? What I meant to say was irresistible! Kara has admired Graham from a distance as she works with his troop of fighting marines, putting them through their yoga paces. She is consumed with keeping heart and home together as she keeps the needs of her son first and foremost. Given the history with her ex that is not surprising at all. As their mutual attraction just can’t be denied, they are going to have to work through a few hurdles thrown in their way…

I love this series about military hotties who are strong in and out of the fighting ring. Each story highlights one couple’s journey set within a tight-knit group of friends. There are many different personalities that light up the fun and sexy storylines and this is no exception. Kara has had to be strong and capable to ensure the wellbeing of her son. Given her circumstances, she is understandably wary when Graham steps up to show his interest in not only her but her son. She’s used to handling things on her own, that’s just how it has been, so she’s not sure if she can open up her heart, or her son’s, to possible disappointment.

I love the characters that inhabit this series! They are real—handling life with humor, sarcasm and the occasional glass of wine. Kara is a single mom, and like many, has had to shoulder more than her share of responsibilities. Graham is right there with her as he knows they come as a package deal. He chips away at her defenses by being caring and sexy, not afraid to go that extra mile. And when he treats that extra mile as nothing special, but something that one simply does for those they love, well, that set the heart palpations to overdrive.

“Wanted her to freely hand him her troubles to help her carry them. Wanted to hold her and be humbled by her faith.”

Throw in supportive and snarky friends, and a few obstacles in their path, and it’s a love story with heart and substance. I hope there is more to come in this series! ~ Diane, 4 stars

I'm just gonna lay things out here. I need me a Marine. A Marine that's a boxer. A Marine that's a boxer AND a JAG lawyer to boot. Lordy! Fight to the Finish was all kinds of hot and sexy make a girl swoon goodness. Murray knows how to deliver a knock out!

Alright the quick of it. Graham and his group of Marines are on a boxing team that's getting ready to compete in a tournament against teams from the other branches of the military. One of the ways their coaches are helping them get ready? Yoga classes. *nods* Led by one smoking hot single mama named Kara who gets Graham all twisted up in more ways than one. He's definitely looking for more than a teacher-student thing but Kara...she's got other responsibilities--namely her son--and she's got no time for romance.

Kara is one of those heroines you can look at and just think 'damn, woman! you are amazing.' She's a single mom fighting to provide for her son and keep him safe--he has severe life threatening allergies. She's could easily be whiny and complain about how hard her life was and the struggle of it all but instead she tackles life and makes it her bitch. I loved that. Loved seeing her strength and determination to be a good mom and make something of her life. And seeing her walls come down a little and finally accept help when she needed it and letting a little love back in her life.

And Graham. If ever there were a swoonworthy and oh so lickable hero it's Graham. Holy cow. This guy. This guy! Yall. I just can't even explain and dammit I know I need to try but I just. Seriously this guy was just an incredible man. Thoughtful, sexy, dependable. He wanted Kara something fierce. He was totally smitten. But he was smitten with her son as well which totally sealed things for me.

I know kids can be an iffy thing to include in a romance but Murray absolutely rocked it. Both with the kid himself who was a great little guy and with the inclusion of him in the romance between Graham and Kara. It was an incredible layer to their story and absolutely pulled at my heart. Seeing her handle life as a single mom (I have an only parent so Kara had a spot in my heart right away even if I thought she needed a shake now and again lol) and seeing Graham and his connection to her son. It was just. Yeah. It was swoony make a girl sigh kinda stuff. I loved seeing them all come together as a family. So. Kudos to Murray for doing such an excellent job all around.

There's lots of action from all different fronts. The sexy action--omg, yeah, these two are hot together. The sweaty Marines working out and boxing action--again OMG. And then finally the issue of who's been vandalizing and taunting the team through the series. That was interesting. Kinda sorta had it figured out from the very beginning of the series so I wasn't terribly surprised but it was good getting the resolution and motives behind it. It all made for a pretty exciting and face paced read which was great.

All in all, Fight to the Finish was an incredible read. There were so many fantastic elements blending together for a wonderful ending to the series. I would recommend reading the series in order because of the light suspense that threads through all of them. Plus just getting to know this group from the get go. They're all most definitely worth your time.

~~~~notes~~~~
omg you're a mean woman, Murray. A mean woman. lol gah I want this one now. Neeeeeeed it. I wanna know what happens! Killing me. You're killing me!
Graham Sweeney has been attracted to Kara since meeting her because of their mutual friends. But she is guarded and resistant to dating. She is a single mom to her ten year old son Zach who has significant allergies and special dietary needs that make their lives more complicated. But Graham is even understanding about that and goes out of his way to be accepting and helpful. He is perfectly swoony, a Marine, lawyer, boxer, smart, sexy, funny, thoughtful, and sweet. But this good guy is getting impatient with getting avoided or rejected.
Though Kara tries, Graham is getting harder to resist and he has even bonded with her son. She is used to doing it all alone and could use a partner, but she has a reason that makes her not want to lead him on since she does not think there is hope for a future. But the pull between them just keeps growing and their friends are all trying to push them together.
But their "in the now" is combustible, exciting, and just brings them closer. Graham is willing to fight for more and be persistent. But there are some other outside complications and she's got another battle on her hands that affects their lives and future. Sometimes her stubborn pride gets in the way as well.
Finally there is a conclusion in the vandalism story that has run through this series causing mystery and suspense. And characters from the previous books--Marianne and Brad, Greg and Reagan and some other team mates and staff are back. This was a sweet, romantic, love story with a single mom an dependable but sexy guy. Graham was just amazing and I love how he treated Kara and Zach. The Marine boxing team and All Military Games along with the ongoing story of the vandalism against them added more drama to the story.
This was my favorite book of this series and I have become attached to this group. It was fairly low angst, but had fun camaraderie, some mystery, suspense, romance, and feels.
My Review:
I think this installment was my favorite over Below the Belt and Against the Ropes. I loved that we get more out of the relationships and friendships, you get a deeper understanding of who our cast is from an emotional stand point this time around. I really missed that in the first book so I am glad that we got it this time. I actually read the book twice but I still felt that something in the intimate relationship between Graham and Kara was missing but I still liked it overall.
This is the first book I have read in this series by Murray and honestly I was a little confused at first. I mean okay so they are marines or boxers? Are they still active marines? The answer to those questions came while reading but even thought this is part of a series I guess I just expected to read it as a standalone and be up to speed but that really wasn't the case.
It looks like Kara and Graham have a history that started way before this book. In the beginning you can see they like each other but Kara doesn't want to date because she is a single mom and she is fighting her ex for custody which is understandable but then something with them shifts and bam they are trying to make it work.
I liked when the group got together. I thought it was fun and they all have a history of sorts. This is the part that makes me wish I would have been more up to speed on who was who and how they got to be so close.
From what I learned from the characters I liked them. I liked the idea of them having military games. I'm not sure if that's real or not but I like that whole idea of the different branches getting together.
Of course it wouldn't be a great romance without a little drama and suspense lurking around. In this story someone is sabotaging the gym where they train and of course we have the drama with Kara's no good ex.
Did I enjoy the story? Yes, because I actually did finish it and I liked it but I just didn't totally fall in love with it. Maybe it's because I didn't read the prior books or maybe I didn't connect with the characters like I thought I would. After reading this I do want to try to read book 1 and maybe I'll feel differently.
By all means this isn't a bad book and it's worth reading but I hated feeling lost at times. If you already started this series you know what to expect but if you plan on jumping in like I did I totally suggest starting at the very first book.
If you know me, you know I love my sports romances. There's just something about a man in a uniform! But I need both action and romance to love a sports romance and this one just didn't make the cut.
As a single mom, Kara is doing everything in her power to raise her son and provide a good life for him. Working as a yoga instructor and running a blog about her son's allergies, Kara is one busy woman. What she doesn't have time for is the irresistible Graham, a fighter for the marines. Graham knows that Kara is the one for him, but can he convince her that he's the one for her, too?
I read the previous book in this series (book number two) and found the romance mediocre and the fighting part definitely lacking. I was hoping for more romance and action in this one, but unfortunately it fell just as flat for me as the previous book. I didn't really see any development between Kara and Graham because Graham was already head over heels for Kara from the start of the novel. I felt like Kara's reasoning for not being with Graham was a little cliche as a single mom and I wanted something more unique.
As for the heat in the romance, I found myself more bored than not with Graham and Kara. Of course, the whole mystery behind who was vandalizing the gym was carried into this book and I didn't really care for it. It seemed kind of obvious who was behind it and I felt like it was just something to be added to the story.
In the end, Jeanette Murray has yet to impress me. While the potential is there, I never find myself caring for the characters and really immersing myself into their stories. When looking for your next intense sports romance, you should skip over this series.
I really connected to this book. single mom Kara is trying to get by, focusing on her child and keeping him healthy, with only a tiny bit of financial assistance from the dad. all while fighting her feelings for someone. then we gave Graham who is trying to win over both their hearts, while boxing and trying to figure out who's attacking and vandalizing the Marine's boxing teams.
I've never read Jeannette before. I was worried coming into the series in book 3 would make it extremely hard to get into or follow, and I'm happy to say I was wrong. while we do have mutual friends between our two characters, it only made me want to read their stories more. it didn't take away from Kara and Graham or make me feel as if I was 10/steps behind.
the storyline was easy to follow and I love love how Jeanette wrote in Zack. he wasn't an after thought, he was the first thing both of our characters thought about. and for a single mom, that makes me heart sing. I loved how Graham included him in a lot of things they did, and made him feel so important. it made me tear up. made me hope someday someone does that for my kid.
I also loved how Jeanette included the boxing. she didn't just say they were on team or had a match, we actually get to "see" a match or two. and it is kind of awesome how she made sure to include that instead of just making it a fact about the character.
I really connected with this book. I did struggle with some parts, they seemed a little slow moving and drug.out. but overall this was a great read. it had a very real aspect to it. I give this 4 stars
This is the third novel I've read by Jeanette Murray, all being in her First to Fight series, and I've enjoyed each of them very much. The series centers around a team of Marine Boxers who are training for a big tournament, and the women in their lives that each of the heroes fall in love with. That said, Fight to the Finish is Graham and Kara's story. Graham is lawyer, one of the teams best boxers, and a total hottie. Kara is a yoga instructor who through mutual connections ends up doing some yoga training sessions with the guys on the team. She and Graham have been crushing on each other for a while now, but Kara is a single mom with a really sweet son who has a ton of food allergies. She doesn't date, and she especially doesn't want to date a Marine, especially when falling for one would involve probably moving to a different area, probably more than once. Graham, however, is determined to get past Kara's defenses and show her that he can be a man she could have a future with. He's great with Kara's son, and as I said before, a total hottie.
I enjoyed watching the romance unfold and develop between Kara and Graham, and loved seeing the way he was with Kara's son. In addition to the romance, there is also quite a bit of suspense as the mystery unfolds regarding some vandalism that has been happening, which escalates into something much more dangerous. Another bonus is getting to see the characters from the previous two novels make an appearance in Fight to the Finish as well. Overall, Fight to the Finish is a very entertaining sports-themed romance with a bit of suspense in the mix as well. Definitely worth checking out.
I’ve really enjoyed the FIRST TO FIGHT series and can’t wait to read more by Jeanette Murray. There is more “action” in this one because we finally get to see the All Military Games. I thought the pacing was great throughout and even though I kind of saw the ending coming it was still good. However, I’m not totally happy with our vandal because I didn’t want it to be this person, but oh well.
I love Graham’s character! The moments between Graham and Zach were so sweet! Kara was a bit more of a stubborn character, very set in her ways of doing everything on her own and never asking for help. This caused some head-butting between Graham and Kara but I appreciated how Kara came to lean on others and grow into the idea of being a family instead of a single entity.
I have to say that each of the heroes in this series have a very consistent personality and characterization. I feel like Jeanette Murray just wrote slight variations of the same hero whereas the heroines are more diverse. That being said it’s hard to dislike a guy who's just a gentleman, smart and helpful, and great with kids.
It was okay. Not the best not the worst. I was a bit disappointed at how misleading the description of the book was, it really had nothing to do with her ex and there was a small amount of action towards the end for maybe a couple pages or so. Overall I don’t see myself reading it again.
In Jeannette Murray's Fight to the Finish, the 3rd installment in the First to Fight boxing sports romance series, this one would make you throw no punches and give you a helluva of a TKO punch. For Kara Smith, she's a single mother raising her ten-year-old son Zach on her own. She's a yoga instructor for the Marine at Camp Jejeune and a successful blogger about her son's gluten-free diet. And when she's at her best friend Marianne's picnic, she hangs out with her friends and sets her sights for JAG Officer Graham Sweeney. Zach dotes on him and wants together. As for Graham, he would do anything possible to have Kara and Zach in his life. At first sight, there was a brewing chemistry between them. And before they could dance around the ring to be together, they would have to keep their budding romance a secret from her son. While Kara and Graham set out to test the feelings for each other, the gang at the gym have to deal with a vandal, while prepping for the All Military Boxing games in Texas. And Kara has to deal with her ex who wants to decrease child support payments by putting a squeeze on her. If Kara doesn't do anything about it to stop him, she wouldn't have the freedom to go outside state lines. With Graham on her side, he would help her anything way possible, even from throwing some heat by adding pressure. As a boxer, the battle is on inside the ring; outside of the ring, all gloves are off to throw down the gauntlet to fight for what they want and have a happy ending.
I enjoyed this the most out of all the book, but I still can’t say I loved it. The books weren’t awful, just missing some of that emotion and actual angst I look for in books. The ‘mystery’ would have been better if slowly over the three books we got snippets from the person vandalising. Like overheard conversations about their motive (their brothers death) etc but it was kind of just, guess which one it was from the heaps of sketchy people. It wasn’t super hard to see who (I checked my reviews and the person was on of my guesses so it clearly wasn’t comp,steely left field) but the motive only came out right at the end when they were getting caught in the final act.
This relationship was definitely my most favourite, I didn’t like when he went to her exes house it was my only real problem with the whole thing.
I also think this authors writing might just not be for me, because there wasn’t really a change in how I felt with any of the books. I think this concept is cool, I’ve never actually read a military book where they’re not doing typical soldier stuff or retired/ on leave, so the sports stuff was actually really cool.
Would also like to say, book one and two had really great covers. This one doesn’t and it made me sad lol.
REVIEW: 3.75 stars----FIGHT TO THE FINISH is the third and final installment in Jeanette Murray’s contemporary, adult FIRST TO FIGHT romance series focusing on a group of US Marines’ boxing team. This is Judge Advocate Graham Sweeney, and single mom/yoga instructor Kara Smith’s story line. FIGHT TO THE FINISH can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty but I recommend reading the series in order as there is an ongoing story line of attack against the Marines that runs through each of the installments.
Told from dual third person perspectives (Kara and Graham) FIGHT TO THE FINISH is the culmination of three stories; three couples, and the increase in vandalism against the Marines in question. Graham Sweeney is a Judge Advocate with the Marines, and a member of their boxing team whose attraction to yoga instructor Kara Smith does not go unnoticed by everyone around. Kara is a single mother to ten year old Zach-a young boy with multiple food allergies that forces our heroine into a rigid lifestyle when it comes to protecting her son. What ensues is Graham’s seduction of Kara Smith, and Kara’s struggle to keep Zach’s father from destroying their lives.
The relationship between Kara and Graham is one of immediate attraction but Kara knows that their time together is limited. Graham will one day be shipped out of state, and Kara does not have the ability to move at will. The $ex scenes are impassioned and intense.
There is a secondary story line running through the series following a number of minor vandalism cases that have been increasing in damage and danger. The Marine’s appear to be the target of these attacks but the attacks have become more personal and dangerous. The person(s) responsible is becoming obvious, but the twist, is the reason why.
All of the previous story line couples and characters play secondary and supporting roles. The world building continues to focus on the boxing team, their friendships, their loves, the struggles both in and out of the ring. The action takes place behind the scenes, outside the ring, and of course, during their tournament play.
FIGHT TO THE FINISH is an emotional story line about friendship and family; betrayal and revenge; moving forward and letting go of the past. The premise is revealing, entertaining, and heart warming especially as it pertains to Kara’s son Zach and his relationship with Graham. The characters are charismatic, energetic, fun and animated; the romance is passionate and alive.
Review:
I wasn’t sure I would like this book when I started to read it but by the second chapter Jeanette Murray had done her usual and hooked me in with the characters and plot.
Graham knows that Kara is the one for him and as he gets to know her and her severely allergic son he sees her for the strong, passionate, mother and independent woman she has become. Convincing her that she is worth the love of another person, and, to trust seems to be an all time job. When Kara does open up to Graham, he only knows that he will protect and love her at all cost. After all fighting is his hobby but Kara is his future. As he prepares for the marine boxing championship he knows what he must do and how to go about it.
Kara has been on her own since she was 18 years old. Her son is her life and the custody battle is a fight she has to win. Graham’s love is something she just hasn’t got the energy for as she feels it will go nowhere and it might jeopardize what she is trying to achieve. She knows what she feels for Graham but when he oversteps his bounds she wonders if she can trust him with not only her future but that of her son. The boy truly looks up to Graham and tells his mother frequently that she is not giving the relationship a chance.
The chemistry between Kara and Graham is undeniable however the reader frequently wonders if it is enough to sustain the relationship. Again, friendships are the base of good relationships.
With a good story and good character development Jeanette Murray drew me into an setting I was not entirely comfortable with. I found in the end I was smiling and telling myself to look out for other books in this same series.
I adore Jeanette Murray’s writing. She writes lovely characters with rich backgrounds and histories, while not leaving out the heat I’ve come to expect from her books. Somehow I had missed the first two books in this trilogy, so I read this one a wee bit out of order. However, it in no way made my enjoyment any less…it just made me buy the first two and go on a reading binge!
Kara is a single mom, raising her son, and just trying to get by. Between the demands of her job and the demands of raising an allergy specific young boy, she doesn’t have much time for a love life. That doesn’t stop Graham though, a lawyer on base who is drawn to this driven young woman.
I think I adore these books, so very, very much, because Jeanette writes real situations. Life is messy. We have weird feelings. We are embarrassed. We often want what we can’t have. We get mad, we get angry, and we are often confused. We worry. We love. All of these emotions are clear in her work and create such a realistic love story, you become completely immersed within this world. The relationships are real, the brotherhood is extremely loyal and strong, and the love story is utterly lovely.
As I said before, I read the series out of order. However, it did make me go back and read the first two, not because I was confused but because I absolutely adored the people within the story. Sad that the trilogy has ended but was glad I was along for the ride. Brava Ms. Murray, excited to see what comes next!
Let me start off by saying, Kara is a beautiful name! Secondly, I was excited to read Kara and Zach's story after reading about Zach's allergy struggles in previous installments. That being said, I enjoyed this story but I didn't love it. The plot carried on at times when more action-filled scenes could've been spaced out instead of all compiling near the end. Kara finding herself and taking a stand when it comes to Zach's Dad was empowering to witness and Graham's care for Kara and Zach made him even more attractive. Their relationship came off as Insta-love based on how the story was written. The Insta-love in books...I do not like. I really wanted to enjoy this book. I didn't feel connected on a deep level to Graham. I know him from how he handled situations in the present: with care and protectiveness, not backing down. But what about his past, his dreams for his future...outside of Kara and Zach. I just had an overall feeling of not connecting enough with the characters and the plot hitting a lull for me.
Kara really amused me I liked seeing her get all flustered when around Graham, “you look ready. You looked amazing.” She blinked as his eyes darkened. “I mean, your boxing. You know, your . . . bam. Pow.” I really liked Graham he was a straight up kind of guy and I loved his playfulness, “I mean, if you wanna throw in some of that making out . . .” He held his hands up in a what can you do? gesture. “I won’t deny you. I doubt I could deny you anything.” I really can't blame Kara for losing her train of thought where Graham is concerned, “thank you for dinner,” she began, turning to find him walking behind her. His jeans were only half buttoned, and he hadn’t put on a shirt. He was still barefoot. She was going to go into a coma. A hot guy coma. “I-I-uh . . . thank you.” I liked this book Graham was a great guy.
I love Jeanett's books, and this series one of my favorites.. I like the little mystery tied up with the love story, along with the hot military hero. Graham in this book is wonderful... and Kara is so sweet.. there is very little game playing and that is refreshing. I find nothing more irritating in a book than game playing!
Having said that, it is the end of the trilogy and I am so sad about that... I would have loved to see Tressler grow up and actually act like an adult... maybe fall in love.. maybe not.. but it would be interesting to see him redeem himself and his childishness somehow...
I loved this book... I loved this series.. you cannot go wrong with a Jeanette Murray book, but read this particular series in order... it will all fall in place better if you do... enjoy!
The third book in this series deals with Graham and Kara. I have to admit, I got a little annoyed with Kara and her inner dialogue rationalizing why it was better for her to push Graham away rather than take a stand and try to have something meaningful with him. Graham is a well adjusted and fairly settled guy who has a great career and a good head on his shoulders. I was really routing for him to win this one. It was a good read and the ongoing story about someone sabotaging the Marine boxing team is nicely wrapped up.
Fight to the Finish is the 3rd book in the First to Fight series and it was a really good read. This can be read as a stand alone but might be able to pick up more when it comes to the secondary characters if read in order.
I was pulled in from the get go. Likeable characters. Good storyline. My only thing is that it was predictable. This is not a bad thing. Just didn't give me goosebumps for the unknown.
I would like to see what happens in the series!
Really good idea but dragged on about 100 pages too long and the threat of the Heroines ex never really came to anything. The Hero is a JAG officer but other than a paragraph of giving free advice to the Heroine, there was nothing about his lawyer job. The book focuses more on the fact that he is part of an armed forces boxing team - (and that she has a smoking hot bod thanks to Yoga) which is great .... in small doses
