Spider-Man battles the Vulture in the skies of New York! But with an arm injury cramping the Wallcrawler's style, duking it out with Adrian Toomes won't be an easy feat!
Stan Lee (born Stanley Martin Lieber) was an American writer, editor, creator of comic book superheroes, and the former president and chairman of Marvel Comics.
With several artist co-creators, most notably Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, he co-created Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Thor as a superhero, the X-Men, Iron Man, the Hulk, Daredevil, the Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Scarlet Witch, The Inhumans, and many other characters, introducing complex, naturalistic characters and a thoroughly shared universe into superhero comic books. He subsequently led the expansion of Marvel Comics from a small division of a publishing house to a large multimedia corporation.
Best Vulture/Spidey fight ever! The art is fantastic! The feeling of Spidey about to fall to his death makes you dizzy! With one arm hurt Spidey has to take on a cold and calculating foe that wants revenge - this is a clear 'tactical' issue - both characters doing everything they can to defeat a skilled foe who wants ultimate victory!
ASM #64 is a Vulture vs Spidey rematch. Robbie Robertson heroically throws himself in front of Jameson to avoid failing rubble. Meanwhie MJ gets a new hairdo which really is..something..
“Mary Jane Watson also had a change in store for herself with #64. Look for her short “perm” hairdo, which Stan had me give her. He asked me to give Gwen the same hairstyle as MJ to make Gwen as flashy looking as the redhead. I guess he didn’t like it after a while, so shortly after these stories, MJ got her long hair back” – John Romita Snr.
This issue seemingly has the first Jameson swears (previously he used the word “blamed”) as he rants at Parker for fleeing instead of taking photographs of the battling Vultures: “The battle of the century is about begin, right here near the Daily Bugle and I don’t have one %$!!#$#!* photographer to cover it!”.
9/10 - Best action issue to date from all the series]
Apart from the horrendous new M.J.'s hairstyle, this is a brilliant action issue that masterfully portrays the clash between Spider-man and Vulture. It's probably the best action issue to date from all published series.
Without taking into account the hard to believe, well, more like the unbelievable fact that a web cushion can soften the blow of a fall from so high, as an action issue for me it's almost perfect.
It excels at Romita's eye-catching aerial views, eye-catching fighting panels, vibrant pace, thrilling fight between the two antagonists and supporting characters that perfectly complement the story.
Add to it an interesting cliffhanger that keeps you wanting to read how the hero will stay afloat next issue.
J.JONAH :" Im rooting for the Vulture!" The Vulture battles Spider-Man who has an arm injury over the Daily Bugle building. plus MJ has a new hairdo that makes her look 55! what were they thinking?
This issue delivers the definitive Vulture vs. Spider-Man battle—an aerial showdown that is both visually stunning and nerve-wracking. With Spidey still nursing an injured arm, the stakes feel higher than ever as he fights to avoid plummeting to his death against a cold, calculating foe determined to end him. The tactical nature of the fight, with both combatants pushing their limits, makes this one of the most intense and well-executed Vulture battles in ASM history.
In a lighter subplot, MJ debuts a short permed hairstyle, a creative decision by Romita that Stan Lee later reversed. Still, it’s an interesting footnote in Spidey history! Also, Jameson seemingly lets loose his first actual comic-censored swear, a hilarious moment that shows just how much Peter’s absence drives him crazy.
With top-tier action, strong character moments, and unforgettable artwork, ASM #64 is a must-read for any Spider-Man fan!
Concerning story, nothing really happens here but a long fight with The Vulture. But the art (by John Romita with Don Heck) was really at its best. Nearly all the pages had big epic action panels each worthy of being picked as a cover. Maybe that's why this issue reminded me with "The Death of Superman".
