Stan Lee (born Stanley Martin Lieber) was an American writer, editor, creator of comic book superheroes, and the former president and chairman of Marvel Comics.
With several artist co-creators, most notably Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, he co-created Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Thor as a superhero, the X-Men, Iron Man, the Hulk, Daredevil, the Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Scarlet Witch, The Inhumans, and many other characters, introducing complex, naturalistic characters and a thoroughly shared universe into superhero comic books. He subsequently led the expansion of Marvel Comics from a small division of a publishing house to a large multimedia corporation.
Maybe the connection between Vanessa and The Schemer wasn't very subtle..but it was a nice touch. Spider-Man is tracking the Schemer for that reward money
Snow hits New York and there’s a five grand reward out of The Schemer and Spidey intends to cash in.
“Can’t let a few dumb boners upset me! I’ve got to get that reward” -Spider-Man
Not a lot happens in this issue, Spidey roams around in the icey cold, The Schemer drives about in his sci-fi car and Vanessa Fisk berates The Kingpin for being uncaring about their son who is presumed missing. It all comes to a head when both the Schemer and Spidey gate-crash the Fisk’s residence.
“I loved doing that cover to issue #84 because I got so much more dynamic movement in it than usual. When we introduced the Kingpin’s wife I took the opportunity to pay tribute to the Dragon Lady of Terry and the Pirates by Milton Caniff, who, from my early teens, was implanted in my mind forever. Vanessa Fisk became the perfect counterpoint to the Kingpin and led to the wonderful family drama which unfolds in these issues.” -John Romita Snr.
The Schemer vs. Kingpin storyline heats up—literally—against a snowy New York backdrop, but this issue is more about setup than payoff. Spidey, in desperate need of cash, sets his sights on the $5,000 bounty for capturing the Schemer, leading to some amusing moments as he tries (and fails) to track him down. Meanwhile, the Schemer cruises around in his futuristic-looking car, and Kingpin’s wife, Vanessa Fisk, makes her debut, immediately adding depth to the crime lord’s character.
While not a lot happens in terms of action, the real intrigue comes from Vanessa berating Kingpin for his lack of concern over their missing son—hinting at deeper family drama that will unfold later. Things finally come to a head when both Spider-Man and the Schemer crash into the Fisk residence, setting up a dramatic confrontation.
