“Here’s one that most readers didn’t expect. Just for a change of pace we send Spidey to London, hoping to find Gwen Stacy. Naturally, he has an adventure there; one lone web-swinger against a whole kaboodle of terrorists. We wont tell you how it ends except to say that it’s really a heart-breaker. You’ll see what I mean when you read this truly memorable tale.” – John Romita Snr.

In a stroke of actual luck Robbie Robertson sends Peter on assignment to London on his week off from college so he can track Gwen down. Unfortunately, Parker luck strikes, and he stumbles straight into a bunch of terrorists before he’s even off the plane. Doh! Parker realises that now that Spider-Man has been spotted in London it would be too much of a coincidence if Peter visits Gwen at the same time so he manages to take in the sights of London but the woman he came to see.

Spider-Man goes international! In this rare detour from the streets of New York, Peter Parker heads to London on a Daily Bugle assignment—and of course, it wouldn’t be a proper Parker trip without a serious case of bad luck and tangled emotions.

Peter’s real goal is to find Gwen Stacy, who’s still grieving her father and staying with relatives in the UK. But before he even gets off the plane, he stumbles into a terrorist plot, and before long, Spider-Man is swinging through the foggy skies of London (even though there’s not a skyscraper in sight). It’s a fun change of scenery and tone, as Spidey navigates an unfamiliar city and unfamiliar villains.

The heart of the story, though, is classic Peter Parker: he’s so close to Gwen, yet he knows that showing up while Spider-Man is making international headlines would raise too many questions. In a surprisingly poignant moment, he chooses not to see her. He came across the world for her, and still, he walks away. That’s the kind of emotional gut-punch this series does so well.

John Romita Sr.’s art continues to shine, even when depicting London’s dreary weather and low skylines. The issue doesn’t introduce any long-lasting villains, but the drama and heartbreak make it memorable.

A solid one-off with strong character work, international intrigue, and a bittersweet ending that reminds you just how lonely it can be to be Spider-Man. Definitely worth a read.

Peter once again making assumptions about other people’s feelings! Fun issue regardless of Peter being dumb
