Stan Lee (born Stanley Martin Lieber) was an American writer, editor, creator of comic book superheroes, and the former president and chairman of Marvel Comics.
With several artist co-creators, most notably Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, he co-created Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Thor as a superhero, the X-Men, Iron Man, the Hulk, Daredevil, the Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Scarlet Witch, The Inhumans, and many other characters, introducing complex, naturalistic characters and a thoroughly shared universe into superhero comic books. He subsequently led the expansion of Marvel Comics from a small division of a publishing house to a large multimedia corporation.
Truth be told I am not sure if I read this issue long ago, but now I can write a review. The Lee/Romita team is really kicked into high gear here: release date is 6/17/69. The Lizard (L) is out for revenge, but Spidey has promised not to hurt him (he is really Dr. Curt Conners). But can he hold back...or is L a match for him that must be met with no holding back? Savage fight on the rooftops of NYC!
"I don't know what's changed you these past weeks, Peter...unless you've simply found someone new" Gwendy accidentally hits the nail on the head of the conundrum that is the Amazing Spider-Man.You can't please all the people all the time. plus : 2nd sighting of Harry's Mustache. plus: The Lizard battles Spider-Man.
8/10 - Buscema and Romita pencilling is like two peas in a pod in this issue
This issue has two parts, both equally enjoyable. The first revolves around Parker's daily life problems, with a slowly rising tension leading to the awesome second part featuring the showdown between The Lizard and Spider-Man.
I liked the hints of the Shared Marvel Universe with the Silver Surfer issue in the newsstand and the appearance of the Human Torch. His appearance makes sense due to The Lizard's rampage in the city. It's great that one of the other heroes in the city notices it and intervenes, not leaving the main character alone as usual.
The Lizard is a cool villain that suits Spider-Man perfectly, especially with Spider-Man's personal involvement with his family.
However, it's true that the Lizard was somewhat out of character when, instead of finishing off Spider-Man, he didn't do so because he was stunned and defenseless. The Lizard has been portrayed so far as a ruthless personality driven by pure hate and lack of feelings.
Regarding the artwork, I was surprised that the penciller was John Buscema because he perfectly mimicked Romita's art, and I didn't notice until I checked the artists. I think Jim Mooney as the inker helped achieve this, which is worthy of mention.
After the long-running saga of the ancient tablet, ASM #76 brings things back to basics with a classic Spidey vs. Lizard showdown. While it may be a return to a more straightforward "monster of the month" story, it’s still an exciting issue—especially with the added complication of Peter’s promise to Connors’ family not to hurt the Lizard. Fighting a rampaging reptile while trying to hold back? Not exactly an easy task.
One standout feature of this issue is the panel layout—nearly every page uses a four-panel spread, giving the art more room to breathe. Romita Sr.’s work looks especially fantastic in this format, making the action sequences feel even more dynamic.
Meanwhile, Aunt May is still relaxing in Florida (finally getting a break from worrying herself into illness), and Harry Osborn continues to sport his unfortunate mustache—much to MJ’s supposed frustration (though probably not for the reason he hopes).
With the Lizard growing more dangerous and Spidey trying to keep his promise, this issue sets up an intense battle with high emotional stakes. A solid entry that reminds us why the Lizard remains one of Spidey’s most tragic foes!
After the long running saga of The Tablet changing hands, ASM #76 returns to the simpler ‘monster of the month’ story; The Lizard is loose once again. ‘nuff said. What is unique about this issue is most every page is a four-panel spread. This gives each panel a large space to breathe and when read digitally on a tablet gives each panel a lovely full screen view to really enjoy the art.
Elsewhere Aunt May is enjoying her Florida vacation and Harry still has his awful moustache (I can believe it drives Mary Jane “maaaad” Harry, but not for the reason you think).
