AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #11-16, ANNUAL #1 (The Sinister Six)
*Note: A nifty READING ORDER has been provided at the end of this review

Here, Spider-Man is really allowed to come into his own as a character and achieve more of an arc than was previously possible, all for the betterment of the story.

Peter's intellect is effectively explored in greater detail, as the villains' powers force him to find creative solutions to the obstacles they present. Each story introduces him caught off guard by the new set of powers, forcing him to use his knowledge and creativity, thus setting up a rematch that shows his growth since the beginning of the issue. This newly utilized characteristic really makes Spider-Man a unique superhero and have more of an arc in each issue than before.

This growth doesn't come without consequence, as Stan also uses Peter's intellect to destroy his relationship with Betty Page (as Liz Allen becomes attracted to this very intellect). With Betty suspecting cheating, it creates a tragic irony in his strength costing him the people he loves. Thus Lee effectively expands this loose end from the previous arc, as it builds off the reveal of Betty's big secret she was keeping from Peter... which I won't dare spoil here.

Stan Lee brilliantly ties both of these arcs together, in the annual issue. Each new villain returns in this issue, along with Doctor Octopus from the first in this arc, to found the Sinister Six!
It not only is one of the best made Spider-Man issues in history, it also allows the arc to come full-circle: With the first issue re-introducing Doctor Ock, through him kidnapping Betty Page, and the Annual issue featuring Doctor Ock, once again kidnapping Betty Page, it allows the entire arc to return where it began! Thus, the formula set up in these issues (failure followed by growth) is utilized across the entire arc!

Tanpa berpikir panjang, ketika Spider-Man tergeletak tak berdaya, Dr. Octopus pun membuka topeng Spider-Man yang menampilkan wajah Peter Parker.

The last issue, while Spiderman saved Betty, Doctor Octopus got away. This issue was the resolution to that encounter.

Peter isn't feeling well. Even so, he goes after Doc Ock when a challenge is issued. Betty has been kidnapped at Coney Island. Weak from the illness, Spiderman is no match for Doc Ock. He even unmasks Spiderman. A woozy Peter is seen by all. No one believes Peter is Spiderman. He had been no challenge. Dejected, Peter goes home and rests.

The following day he is back to full strength and an epic battle ensues on the streets of New York. Fun battling. Spiderman prevails and Doctor Octopus is takem back to jail. Liz, who had fallen for Peter in this issue, asks him to a party. Peter rejects her in favor of Betty. :)

There were no letters. :(

Some really good panels by Ditko here.

The cover does a better job a synopsis than anyone could come up with for ASM #12. No? Then how about the opening page: 1) Take one of the most powerful super-villains of all time (Doc Ock) 2) Add a spine-tingling assortment of wild beasts on the rampage 3) mix well with our usual cast of off-beat characters and 4) top if off with the expose of Spider-Man, who could ask for anything more. ‘nuff said.

NB: the only time I have seen “teenager” spelled teen-ager with a hyphen is in ASM. I know that they put a hyphen in Spider-Man as ‘Spiderman’ looked too much like ‘Superman’ so assume Lee naturally took to doing the same with teenager? Also we have dated reference #3751 with “that Spider-Man is a poor man’s Frank Buck”.

#12 Amazing spiderman

It was a symphony of excitement.
These old Spiderman stories are truly amazing. This one in particular had Doc ock expose Spiderman and reveal his identity but nobody believed he was Spiderman because a 24 hour virus dulled his spider strength. After the virus and fever broke, spiderman was his fun loving self. God bless Stan Lee & Steve Ditko for creating fantasy excitement at the Superbowl level. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this.

The second part of the return of Doc Ock! Poor Spidey has the 24 hour flu; so he is not much of a match for the good doctor, who has prescribed a massive dose of revenge! Will not tell you how our hero gets out of the situation on the cover...all I will say is that it really happens! Foundational book in this very terse relationship!

Don’t love the crutch of suddenly not feeling well but always love the Clark-Kent-ness of Peter Parker’s identity. RANDOM GORILLA ATTACK HELL YEA!

At this point it is absolutely cemented that Doc Oc is the top Spidey villain to date. A national super villain just waiting to get his revenge on the web head

What a clickbait, but I'd be lying if I said it didn't work, even though I know better anyway. The little rookie love story with Betty Brant is really quite nice, but I'm looking forward to the first appearance of the green goblin and then eventually Gwen.

What a great battle! But underwhelming on the unmasked part but what can I expect during that time LoL! But that fight was so great between Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus. Jonah is getting on my nerves.

Well, the cover dosen't lie, but it does feel a bit like bait and switch, or clickbait. Still, the story is fun. I suppose this is an artifact of the times.

I'm sorry but that whole identity thing and how no one connected the dots sucked. I like the full 180 from Liz Allan though

Doc Ock is continuing to cause more trouble, Peter loses his Spidey powers while he has a could, and things start becoming a bit more complicated with Betty Brant and Liz Allan both reappraising Peter/Spider-Man, complications that will continue for quite some time ahead.
