Stan Lee (born Stanley Martin Lieber) was an American writer, editor, creator of comic book superheroes, and the former president and chairman of Marvel Comics.

With several artist co-creators, most notably Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, he co-created Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Thor as a superhero, the X-Men, Iron Man, the Hulk, Daredevil, the Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Scarlet Witch, The Inhumans, and many other characters, introducing complex, naturalistic characters and a thoroughly shared universe into superhero comic books. He subsequently led the expansion of Marvel Comics from a small division of a publishing house to a large multimedia corporation.

THE END of SPIDER-MAN?
Nov 1964.

Despite a brief appearance by Sandman...it's more of a Peter Parker issue.
Aunt May is recuperating and the whole city seemingly is against him..fueled by JJonah and his seemingly turn tail and run from the previous issue.
JJonah "smiling" is a sight to behold!.

Ever want to quit your job? What if it was a job that you didn't get paid to do; a job that actually had a negative impact on your relationships? What if a family member needed help, but you had to ask yourself if what you were doing was going to take time away from their needs? A very young Spidey has to ask all these questions - while the public thinks he has become a coward!

This was definitely an interesting comic. Peter Parker had to look after his sick grandmother, taking a step back from his Spider-Man duties and all hell breaks loose for the web-slinger as the whole city turns against him. This comic said that it would be different and it certainly was! I can't wait to see the end of this story line and watch Spider-Man kick his enemies butts (and prove that he is not a coward)!

Reread for My Marvelous Year Three: 1964 pt. 2!

Read for one of the zillion times Peter Parker almost hangs up his hat. Not an essential read, primarily serves to weave the first annual into the ASM canon.

No fights this issue, except Peter's internal struggle with his identity as Spiderman vs his familial obligations. A real heart-wrencher, and a redeeming ending!

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #17-20 (The End of Spider-Man)

Overall a good story arc that, while not providing consequential new ground for the character, captures a nice character study of a superhero’s everyday life.

One could argue that the small stakes and small conflicts represent a unique quality to Peter Parker’s storyline; the universe won’t blow up if he fails, he’ll just ruin his relationship with his girlfriend; that’s the stake. That’s THE ENTIRE stake. And that’s enough. It’s truly quite unique that such mundane problems as relationships, economic hardship, and health problems would be presented as the predominant conflict in a comic book storyline. It really immerses the reader in the uniquely smaller atmosphere Spider-Man inhabits within the narrative universe of Marvel, and makes it even more suspenseful because he has less resources at his disposal to fight super-powered villains.

It was a very nice arc choice on Lee’s part to have all 3 of the main issues in this storyline mirror each other; for instance the Human Torch motif. His reappearance in each issue serves as a bookmark of Peter’s character growth, as we reflect on everything that happened to Peter between his the last time the Torch showed up and now. By making each issue’s structure and overall plot mirror each other so closely, it causes the few things that are different to stick out; specifically, what is different is the character of Peter Parker, between the first issue and final issue.

On a lesser note, this issue begins an incredible ongoing storyline for Peter Parker; it introduces and teases the ongoing saga of the secret identity behind the Green Goblin. Who or what he could be will remain unknown for several more issues, but it will go on to be one of the most important storylines in the history of Spider-Man. It’s interesting, then, that it should be so un-integral to this storyline, apart from making us wonder why the Goblin is so interested in Spider-Man.

Nothing particularly groundbreaking occurs in terms of Spider-Man’s development in this arc, although it is definitely a compelling side story.

Though the Sandman returns in Amazing Spider-Man #18 for another face off, Lee and Ditko spend some quality time in the people drama side of what made their Marvel funny books so damn endearing. Jameson's turns up the heat on his crusade against Spider-Man calling him out as a coward for fleeing the Goblin Fight in lats issue, little did he know that poor Parker left to be at the hostel bedside of his frail May. Betty Brant proves extremely heartless here as she gives Parker the cold shoulder even knowing that his Aunt has been hospitalised.

Proving that the Bugle really must have had good circulation numbers we see Goblin celebrating his "victory" and Doctor Octopus (referring to himself as that nick name!), Kraven (who was deported?) and The Vulture all reacting to the news.

It's almost comical seeing May this frail considering how youthful and alive she is in current ASM, even with the Marvel sliding timescale, it doesn't help with Lee's muddled explanation what is wrong, last issue we were told that she had another heart attack and Betty says here that she had "a serious operation", yet May seems to be released home soon even if a doctor is doing home visits with tablets. And I've never heard of taking a month to walk after a heart attack! But good news as the Doc shows up to tell May that she no longer needs any of that pesky, expensive medicine from here on in.

NB. Lee answers the question outright what happens to all the webs that Spidey leaves all over NYC as Spider-Man explains that "my sticky webbing eventually evaporates". It's hard not to believe that this kind of dialogue isn't there in response to what must have been a lot of Marvel mailbag letters of that time. However showing just how malleable Peter's "spider sense" is he tries to use it to detect Flash in NYC! Lee never did believe in sticking to any set rules in his run (further example is earlier in the issue Spider-Mans web breaks in minutes when previously we had been told it lasts for an hour).

Spider-Man masih dianggap "pengecut" oleh masyarakat sekitar dan tentunya sang pemimpin redaksi the Daily Bugle, J. Jonah Jameson.

Dari kata-kata Bibi May, semangat Peter kembali muncul. Keputusannya untuk berhenti menjadi Spider-Man ternyata salah, sehingga ia kembali mengambil kostum laba-labanya dari tempat sampah di kamarnya, lantas ia pun mulai beraksi lagi untuk membasmi kejahatan.

***

Forget about everything you've ever read about Spidey before!! Forget every super-hero thriller you've ever seen!! Throw away all your pre-conceived ideas of what a full length agazine drama should be like!

This one is different!
This one is a sensation!
This one is just for you!

That's the introduction to this issue. And while Marvel is known to hype its stories, this was dead on!

There were no fight scenes in this issue. Well, Sandman attempted to fight. Spider-Man bowed out. Flash dressed as Spider-Man and had his butt handed to him. But the real Spider-Man, yeah, he didn't fight.

This entire issue was story. All drama. J. Jonah is still gloating over Spider-Man's cowardice. Betty is upset. Flash is sore with Peter. Aunt May is ill and they're almost out of money.

Spider-Man attempts to sell his webbing formula, but since it disintegrates quickly, the company is not interested. Peter has real-life problems. He finally recognizes they all stem from being Spider-Man. He decides to not be the superhero any longer. He'll work. He'll settle.

Then Aunt May gets better. She imparts the Parker wisdom on her nephew. Perseverance! Don't be a quitter. And with that, Peter knows he needs to remain being Spider-Man. He retrieves his costume from the trash.

This was a different kind of issue, but one I am truly happy they decided to include. Spider-Man is human and we see that with scenes like the ones depicted here. I wouldn't want the entire run to be this, but it's nice to have moments like this issue to provide depth to the character. Bravo!

I loved this issue. What does Peter do when he can’t afford healthcare for his Aunt May and he has to avoid fighting to take care of her? How does he cope with being labeled a coward. Really interesting plot and something fresh in my opinion. Really enjoyed some moments where Peter creatively tried to circumvent being a superhero while stopping crime.

This was labeled as a Green Goblin appearance, and I’m like “I guess.” I’m reading the chronology of Green Goblin, and this was a very worthy detour.

The whole world thinks Spider-Man is a coward and JJJ is GLOWING with joy. Nice touches to see Human Torch actually now stick up for Spider-Man even when the Avengers are looking down on Spidey. I thought the flashbacks to ols fights were a great touch to remind us of Peter’s past heroics but i think its kinda undermined by him turning around to use his powers to try to make a quick buck. Nevertheless this comic is the story of Spider-Man getting his confidence back thanks to both the torch and Flash Thompson of all people. Lovely

The first issue where the role of Spider-Man becomes more of a burden than anything else. The idea that Spider-Man is seen as a coward by everyone after a certain situation, while somewhat silly and typical of 60s Spider-Man, is already heading in the direction of why I like Spider-Man so much. It's precisely this struggle, and the fact that Peter always seems to choose to be Spider-Man again, that has always defined him for me.

Here are the pros:
- You feel really sorry for Peter and his struggles with the public after being disgraced.

- J. Jonah Jameson is super funny in this issue. It’s great seeing him so happy.

- I love Aunt May’s talk with Peter. It was the perfect motivation he needed to be Spider-Man again.

Here are the cons:
- None.

Rating: 5/5.

I really thought this was going to be the “Spider-Man No More” moment, and would’ve been surprised given how early this is. But I love how Aunt May’s gumption to get out of her wheelchair and walk is what inspires Peter to not be a quitter.

Even the worst issue of Lee/Ditko Spider-Man is still decent. I don't think this is one of the best stories from the team, but it's interesting. No action, though. Reading these along with Untold Tales of Spider-Man and that series ties pretty closely with this title.

Focusing on the Peter Parker drama ahead of the Spider-Man action, this issue provides an interesting insight into the many troubles plaguing our plucky hero, troubles that are mostly affecting his mental health. It's not as enjoyable as the issues surrounding it, for some obvious reasons, but it's still a good piece of work.

Although it isn’t as traditionally exciting as other issues in the series, I love how relatable Peter is in #18. When he rounds a random street corner and runs into the Sandman, he isn’t having any of it. Spidey doesn’t want to deal with Sandman’s crap; he’s too busy trying to get money to pay for Aunt May’s medicine to care about picking a fight. It’s a unique episode that ends up having a good message (don’t give up!) and an experimental premise. As with all other Stan Lee comics, it’s littered with exposition and groovy 60’s dialogue that add to its charm.
