Stan Lee (born Stanley Martin Lieber) was an American writer, editor, creator of comic book superheroes, and the former president and chairman of Marvel Comics.
With several artist co-creators, most notably Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, he co-created Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Thor as a superhero, the X-Men, Iron Man, the Hulk, Daredevil, the Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Scarlet Witch, The Inhumans, and many other characters, introducing complex, naturalistic characters and a thoroughly shared universe into superhero comic books. He subsequently led the expansion of Marvel Comics from a small division of a publishing house to a large multimedia corporation.
The second part of the first appearance of the Prowler: Hobie Brown (Prowler) learns his own lesson about power and responsibility - Spidey sees much of who he could have been if he went the wrong way - the last issue of ASM in the '60s.
Hobie Brown aka The Prowler has blundered into the wrong place at the wrong time as he tries to lift money from the safe of The Daily Bugle whilst Peter Parker is on duty. After Parker takes a tumble through a high-storey window Hobie, who thinks Parker is dead, decides the best way to clear himself is to capture Spider-Man and deliver him to the cops. Just when you think Hobie’s plan couldn’t get any worse.
I’m 79 issues into ASM and I don’t think I have mentioned the letterer once so… “Let me add that Sam Rosen, a master letterer whose brilliance was often overlooked, brought a clear, unobtrusive quality to these pages.” – John Romita Snr.
The second part of The Prowler’s debut continues to showcase Hobie Brown as one of the more complex and well-intentioned "villains" in Spider-Man’s rogues’ gallery. His descent into crime isn’t driven by malice but by desperation and bad decision-making, and this issue highlights his internal conflict beautifully.
After accidentally knocking Peter Parker out of a window, Hobie assumes the worst and hatches an even worse plan—capturing Spider-Man to clear his own name. Meanwhile, Peter, reeling from his suspicions that Gwen might be getting too close to Flash Thompson, throws himself into tracking down The Prowler. Their inevitable clash is a mix of action and introspection, as Spidey sees in Hobie a version of himself had he taken the wrong path.
John Romita Sr.’s artwork continues to shine, making both the fight scenes and the emotional beats hit hard. The themes of power and responsibility, a cornerstone of Spider-Man, are on full display here as Hobie comes to realize the consequences of his choices.
As the last ASM issue of the '60s, this story serves as a fitting reflection on everything that makes Spider-Man great—relatable struggles, morally complex foes, and the ever-present weight of doing the right thing. A solid, thought-provoking read!
