Francesca "Frankie" Leone is pissed off about a lot of things. She was nearly killed by an IED and had to leave the navy. Her father was convicted of treason and took his own life. Her mother, Sophia, wasn't acting as grief-stricken as Frankie thought she should be. So, Frankie is only too happy to believe the words of a complete stranger that Sophia was the one who framed her own husband, and sets out to get the truth. A family friend (this is part of a series) sets her up with Aidan Abbot to help her. Frankie insists that they two of them should pretend to be engaged, as wedding stuff will distract her mother from figuring out that they're undercover.
This was plotless junk.
What exactly it is the Frankie's father did to be charged with treason is never once elaborated upon.
The "intel" that Frankie and Aidan uncover is glossed over, and it's not apparent why anybody would want them dead over what they have found, BECAUSE WE DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS. This kills any chance at suspense. If anything, I figured people wanted Frankie dead because she was such an unrelentingly pissy bitch.
Frankie is unwavering in her belief that her father is innocent. She is just as unwavering in her belief that her mother is guilty. This drives her motivation for the entirety of the story, and she seemingly holds on to it so that she can be pissy to everybody around her.
It makes no sense for her to hold on to this, because the documentation throwing suspicion on her mother, as she admits, could have been falsified. All the other documents she finds could be falsified as well, but it seems to be only the documents related to her mother that she believes could be the real deal.
When Frankie comes up with the engagement idea, she continually gets pissy at Aidan whenever he tries to help out, such as making it look as if they're actually engaged. She's always snapping at him, or glaring at him, or telling him to stop touching her. Aidan must have some strange fetishes, because this just makes him fall in love with her!
As for me, I absolutely detested her!
I hated the main character, the plot is thin and vague, there's only about five characters all up (so you know from the start who the bad guy is), and there's very little action or suspense. Once again, I'm baffled as to why it required two authors to come up with so very little!
