The wars started with a peasant's revolt in Paris and ended beside an obscure farmhouse in Belgium. Over nearly three decades, France, her armies and her new emperor turned Europe into a cauldron of conflict. Henri Durant and Jean Tavere were just two of the thousands of men whose lives were turned upside down in these tumultuous years. In the end, only one of them would survive the battle of... WATERLOO!
Despite the title, this issue follows a couple of French soldiers through a large chunk of Napoleon's campaigns, from the French Revolution through to this final defeat at the titular battle, and if I'm being honest this kind of lets it down a little bit. There's a lot to cover in that time period, so what you get here is a very truncated story. Even so, it's engaging enough, and manages to be fairly informative as well.
There's a kind of sequel to this that covers the Peterloo Massacre that I'm going to be queuing up as my next Commando adventure, and after that I'll be starting in on the small pile I've built up since I started my subscription back in October. Honestly, I'm really looking forward to it.
