John Romita (JR) starts his epic run on Spider-Man (SM) with this key issue. Stan Lee (SL) had JR draw SM in Daredevil #16; when Steve Ditko (SD) left SM after issue #38 JR took over. This is the issue where the Green Goblin (GG) discovers SM secret identity. JR is the artist that 'drew' me to SM when I was a boy, the reason I have been a comic fan all these years.

Ah, I still remember reading this issue as a kid and I'm happy to say that despite some flaws, I still love it. This an important issue, not only because of the long awaited match against The Green Goblin, but also because it's the first issue illustrated by John Romita and with all respect to Steve Ditko, Romita's illustrations are leagues better. That's how I see Spider-Man in my head!

Good story, a little convenient but it was a good story! Some parts of it, I felt took a little more time than it should have but other times, the timing was perfect and fit into the story well! Overall, it was a good first issue to a comic story line that I am excited to read more about!

Reread for My Marvelous Year Five: 1966 pt2

Read for part 1 of a 2 part spidey/goblin tale. And not just any tale. This is a classic bit of Spider-Man canon.

Essential reading for spidey fans and marvel historians

ASM #39 marks the arrival of master Marvel artist (and my personal favourite) John Romita Snr taking over the art duties from co-creator Steve Ditko. Call me biased but Romita's art adds another level to the book; it feels more alive with the use of foreground and background, it's like jumping from a 2D side-scroller beat 'em up into vibrant 3D next gen engine to use a videogame analogy. Peter also appears to bulk out more as he is depicted stockier than he was under Ditko's pencil.

In terms of the story Peter and Harry's relationship takes it's first step towards the friendship we will come to know as Parker bonds with Harry after Norman is sharp with him and Peter reveals he didn't even know his father. Meanwhile the Green Goblin hires goons to expose Spider-Man to a gas which dulls his spider-sense allowing the Goblin to trail Parker as he gets out of costume and discover his true identity. Queue epic fight music for this one as they face off outside of the Parker home and The Goblin reveals his identity as none other than Norman Obsorn. dnn. dnn.. dnnn......

There's a nice joke at DC/ Superman in this one where Parker muses whether he'd get kicked out of the super-hero union for changing in a back alley and not a phone booth.

I'm reading a digital re-issue here and unfortunately Marvel haven't recreated the original letters pages; I am always curious to see how the classic era was received. It's ironic that many unofficial scans out there are complete with these added pages!

Great stuff!
The first issue in the Epic Collection: Spider-Man No More and it didn’t disappoint. I was concerned that the silver age may end up being a jarring shift from the 80’s and beyond comics I had been reading recently. But whilst it was wordier I still felt right at home here.

I was surprised how much happened in this one issue that was of great consequence. Spider-Man and the Green Goblin discover each other’s identities right in the first issue of the Romita Sr run on The Amazing Spider-Man.

The goblin is back and he has found Spidey's identity!

Also, Ditko has left the premises and we have us one Romita Jr. I don't know so far if I like his art more than Ditko's. His women are certainly more beautiful, but I don't know about the colours....

Ohh, they’re getting juicier now. This one’s just iconic for me. Peter and Harry start to get along (if not somewhat). Goblin reveals his identity. Spider-Man’s identity is found out. Poor Aunt May is growing ever more frail. The tension is growing!

The Green Goblin’s grand plan finally comes to fruition, and masks are removed, in this enjoyable Spidey adventure that really takes the peril up to maximum level. And the unmasking is great, despite fans already being very familiar with the lore of the characters.

A classic that’s somewhat aged, but a classic nonetheless.
