From Dust is a contemporary romance full of pain, passion, and real romance. Syd is a woman who has been battling her entire life to overcome a heart-wrenching loss. Homeless and desperate to forget the demons from her past, she finds solace in a quaint dive bar called the Skipper. When a friendly woman offers her a warm shower, a meal, and a job, something sparks in Syd and she begins to feel again. When the bar owner Gunnar sparks passion after years of believing she would never love again, Syd begins to trust again. But when Gunnar finds out the truth about her past, will Syd be able to stay or will she run?
Told in dual POV, From Dust is a beautiful story of friendship, family, and love. The journey that Syd takes in learning to love and trust again is slow and painful and yet, with Gunnar's love Syd finds the strength to overcome. The plot is quite unique as the author finds the perfect balance between passion, action, and addressing real-life barriers such as addiction and divorce. I found the supporting characters to be just as imperative as the main characters in this read as the conflicts greatly affect the balance of life for all of the characters.
"I'd love nothing more than to bury my face between your legs right now and not come up for air for days, but I'm going to take your lead."Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend From Dust to anyone who enjoys an angsty read with raw emotions and a lot of heart. Syd and Gunnar story is one that I will not easily forget. This was my first Freya Barker read and I look forward to reading more from this author.

Wow...this book was amazing. I have put off reading it because I was worried it would be too depressing for me. While it does deal with some very heavy subjects, it's also a book of hope and love. It's about having the strength to pull yourself up from that hole and begin to live again.
Syd was an amazing heroine. I cannot imagine going through all she went through before she made it to Portland. Her grief and loneliness was almost too much to bare. But the fact that she started to turn her life around even before Viv's intervention by just stopping the alcohol, is a testament to her strength. Then, for her to accept the help and decide it was time to start living. Now, her annoying behavior was she was a runner...when things seemed to be one way, she would run. However, it was totally believable that she would feel this way. I was glad it didn't take her long to be coaxed back. She was so wonderful with the kids and I was happy that she accepted them right away and didn't push them away as I was afraid she would do due to her past.
Gunnar...OMG this man! He was absolutely PERFECT in every way. Even in all his gruffness, he was perfect. He was so patient and kind to Sydney. He was everything that she needed. He was also such a wonderful father. I was so pleased that he didn't hold anything against Syd. And when she ran, he chased. He was just PERFECT. He was even a dirty-talker....did I mention he was PERFECT??
I loved all the side characters and I can't wait to read Viv's book. She was amazing as well. I loved the kids and how they accepted Syd with no hesitation at all.
My only complaint would be, a lot happened to Syd. Her past was enough but then you throw in all the other that happened to her as she is trying to find herself again, it became a little much. I wanted her to catch a break and get her HEA.
So, overall, this was an amazing book of love and hope. I can't wait to read the rest in the series.

4.5 GUNNAR stars!!!
“You are my future.” ~Gunnar.
“She’s mine to worry about and to care for"~Gunnar.
The Hero is freaking amazing, he's protective, he's caring, and an amazing father. When the heroine ran, he chased. He didn't believe what anyone said about the heroine he always believed in her, I loved how patient he was with her. 😍
What I also loved about this book was that the MCs are the right age, none of the barely 18s years old heroines paired with older heroes.
This hero was 44 years old and heroine was 39 years old, just the perfect age for me.
My heart broke for the heroine, she was strong but at the same she needed protection she needed someone to be there for her and that was what Viv and Gunnar did for her.
And loved secondary characters like Viv, omg how I would love to have a friend like this woman, she was AWESOME!!! Can't wait to read her book she deserves her HEA!!

‘The place where my heart sat frozen in my chest for so long is becoming too warm a place.’
We were quite excited to start this story as it ticked everything we were in the need of. There’s not many 30 – 40 something romances out there which we love to read; team that up with a passionate romance, some heavy and dramatic storylines and we were hooked! This is our first Freya Barker but it certainly won’t be our last as we loved her writing.
“You running Syd?”
“Only from my past.”
Syd is a broken slip of a girl, we have to say we were under the impression she was a lot younger than her true age from the descriptions and actions. However, whilst living under dire circumstances escaping tragedy and grief she’s given a helping hand and a second chance at life. To watch this woman emerge from darkness was quite emotional with harrowing secrets unearthed. The road isn’t all unicorns and rainbows as Syd is dealt blow after blow be it directly or indirectly. However, once found she doesn’t stand alone. There were so many fabulous characters in this story but none more so than the mature, passionate and luscious, Gunnar.
“There is no fear with you, only feelings so deep, I’m overwhelmed.”
Now, we have to say that Gunnar – be still our beating hearts – reminded us a little bit of a certain KA hero named Tate. Yes you read that right…Tate. There were moments where we were reminded of Sweet Dreams and those shone like a beacon. Gunnar has in some respects been dealt a pretty bad hand in life too, with the exception of his two gorgeous kids and of course his friend Viv who was instrumental in Syd’s second chance. He was a completely lovable alpha hero and when he loves he truly loves.
“Feels like home. This, them…you. It’s almost too much.”
When their paths meet, the journey Gunnar and Syd embark upon is drama filled and one hell of a healing journey through the power of love and friendship. It was emotional and passionate and we truly felt it through most parts.
So, whilst we enjoyed this story there were times were the writing lost its way and fell quite flat and repetitive. There were also a few inconsistencies as well in regards to the storyline. This gave us pause at times and to say we needed an epilogue, well….we desperately needed one at the end of this story.
“Everything we do has a ripple effect, just like nothing that happens to us exists in isolation.”
From Dust is a story of healing, forgiveness and embracing life once more. It’s about seeing that light at the end of the very dark and grim tunnel as you try to put yourself together again after such complete and utter devastation. It’s wanting to and being willing to accept the comfort of others and grabbing that healing hand reaching out to pull you out of the darkness.

I loved this story! I couldn't stop reading. There's so much drama (the good kind of course).
Syd is broken and damaged. Something tragic happened in her past, and she blames herself for it. With no will to live, she wandered around like a homeless person until a woman noticed her in a dumpster.
Viv sees Syd looking for scraps behind The Skipper. She realizes the woman in the dumpster is educated and too clean for a homeless person. As the manager of a pub, Viv offers Syd a job without any second thoughts.
When the owner comes to check on his Pub, he's surprised to find a scrawny looking women cleaning the bathroom. He doesn't trust her, but Syd slowly melts his heart.
"There is no way to describe the healing this man provides for my soul. He makes me think about the unthinkable, only to come up with the realization that you can't win the 'what-if' game."
Gunner is a tough looking biker man. He may look dangerous, but he has a heart of gold. His children are in love with Syd. But she has a secret that she's afraid to share.
"Locking yourself away will only turn you to dust. This I know for a fact. Because I came from dust."
I'm sad that this is over. The ending was a bit rushed, but I enjoyed every moment of it.

This is a fantastic story. It does deal with some heavy issues that can be hard to read but the amazing characters make it worth it. The hero Gunnar was perfect and the heroine Syd was so sweet.

This was quite the emotional roller coaster. You don’t know exactly what Syd has been through, you just know it shook up her world and it seems the hits just keep on coming for her. Once you do learn what started her downward spiral, you just ache for her. What happened to her could happen to anyone.
This was a good story about survival, how to overcome tragedy and to begin anew. It’s also a good story about how we can’t survive alone, we need good people in our corner. Everyone at The Skipper played an important part in Syd’s healing.
Then we have Gunnar and Syds romance. Gunnar and his kids plays a big part in bringing Syd back to life. I absolutely adored Gunnar and the way he supported Syd, and the way he was with his kids. He’s a hero I’m always searching for in books.
This is a heavy story but also an incredibly beautiful story of new beginnings with so many wonderful characters to get to know and love.

Well.... I wrote it, and I'm guessing it wouldn't make sense if I didn't like it—but this one I seriously LOVE. Writing this story dragged me through some deep places and pulled out pretty strong emotions. Yes, even while writing it.
Anyone who has read any of my books knows that 'overcoming' is an important component for me. People who are dealing with physical or emotional limitation, finding their own way through. I say 'through' purposely because you never escape from or get over such intrinsically life changing situations, conditions or events—you have to move 'through' them.
Out of all my stories, this is most true for 'FROM DUST'. A story that not only has pulled a gamut of emotions from me, but also from those who've a chance to read it early. I feel so very blessed with every response I receive. Here is a sampling of what is said:

Overall Opinion: This was just ok for me. I liked the H, and I felt for the h. I loved the kids in the story, and their interactions with the h and H. At times though I felt...bored, but other times I was really into it. It just wasn't consistent in keeping my attention, and with the abrupt ending -- I have to say it's just ok.
Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Syd and Gunnar's story. Syd is found one morning going through a dumpster by a pub because she is homeless. The manager brings her in and gives her a job, and that is where she meets the owner Gunnar. After a friendship of sorts is developed and she starts helping him out with his kids, their attraction becomes too hard to ignore. There are some big secrets revealed, some traumatic events, some sweet moments, some sexy times, some work and ex drama...and they get their HFN ending.
POV: This alternated between Syd and Gunnar's POV.
Overall Pace of Story: Ok. This is probably my biggest complaint. I never skimmed, but it felt a little inconsistent in the pacing to where it lost my interest at times. There was so much going on at some times, and other times where there wasn't much going on at all. The abrupt ending was a major issue for me. It just seemed like the author noticed they were at a certain page count or something and said "ok, that's it!" and ended it. I didn't understand why they ended it there, or why we wouldn't get answers regarding all of the issues the couple had faced.
Instalove: No, but they do develop feelings pretty quick.
H rating: 4 stars. Gunnar. I liked him. He had a great relationship with his kids, and it was obvious that he really cared for the h.
h rating: 3.5 stars. Syd. She was sweet, and really damaged. I loved her relationship with the H's kids. I just had some issues with her trying to run away a few times.
Sadness level: Low. This does cover some heavy themes, but I never needed any tissues.
Push/Pull: Not really.
Heat level: Moderate. They had some good chemistry and scenes.
Descriptive sex: Yes
Safe sex: Yes and no. There are some scenes where condoms are used, and some where they are not. No mention of previous practices.
OW/OM drama: Yes
Sex scene with OW or OM: No
Cheating: No
Separation: No
Possible Triggers: Yes
Closure: This had an abrupt ending. Even though it did provide me with some answers and closure, I would call it a HFN ending. I was a little shocked that it ended where it was and I really was like "that was it?!?" and going forward in my app to see if there was more. I wanted more closure with the couple, to maybe see them in the future, and to have all of their issues resolved!

It’s about seeing that light at the end of the very dark and grim tunnel as you try to put yourself together again after such complete and utter devastation. It’s wanting to and being willing to accept the comfort of others and grabbing that healing hand reaching out to pull you out of the darkness.

When I requested this title from Netgallery a few things caught my attention immediately. This wasn’t just a story of two perfect people meeting and falling in love. This was a story of a woman that broken and saved, given a chance at a new life. Typically it’s the hero that grabs my attention, but this time it was all about Syd.
Syd knows all about loss, guilt and pain. Once she knew about love, but that all ended in tragedy. Now homeless, Syd is given a chance at a new life when a helping hand is offered. A chance to earn a little money, take a warm shower and fill her empty belly, Syd takes this chance – even if it means stepping beyond her comfort zone and letting people close.
When pub owner, Gunner is immediately drawn to Syd. Sensing there is far more to her than just what has been offered up to him. As the two work together, Gunner begins to entrust the care of his children, his company and eventually his heart to her. But Syd has a past that she’s been trying to escape and Gunner is daunted with an ex-wife and a businessman that wants to run him out of business.
This was my first Freya Barker read and I was very pleased with the story as a whole. There was this very uplifting message that carried throughout the story along with the characters being placed in very real situations. This story itself is a risk, but she owned it completely and gave you characters that you instantly fell in love with and wanted nothing but endless moments of happiness for them both.
The only thing that really kept this from being a five star read was that I was not gutted. I wanted a moment where the emotions were just too much and I broke. Now, Syd’s story... yeah, that had sobby tears written all over it – but it didn’t click for me to get the water works to start up. And I can’t really pinpoint why it didn’t. But I really wanted it to destroy me.

I really did love this book from the author Freya Barker. I have read one other book by her and felt the same way, she has a lovely style of writing that is so fully explained and laid out, you can't help but feel you are part of the cast.
Syd is on the streets. She's not a child, she's a woman. How she got there will enfold as you read on. Its a tragic story that brought tears to my eyes and a lump to my throat whilst reading.
Syd sleeps in a dark shed on her own, just her and her rucksack and her memories for company.
She's very thin and lacks nourishment.
One time outside a public house she is looking for food.
I don't want to give any spoilers away, but one of the Managers inside has noticed Syd before and doesn't look like other homeless people. When she gets to speak to Syd she can see she is an intelligent woman too. Although, she doesn't say much and is quite guarded. Its been ages since she has had any kindness shown to her.
The lady invites her in for a 'decent' meal. Offers her a chat and a warm place to sit for a while.
I will move on from that and say that she is offered a job there. She later meets the owner named Gunner.
I have to say here and now, I loved Gunner.
When Gunner comes upon her in his establishment he sees a thin woman, pretty, and attractive but surprised at her thinness. He names her 'bird'
There is definitely an attraction between these two. I see how Syd can bring out the protectiveness from Gunner and his emotional side. Especially when it comes to his two children.
He has an ex wife too, you will meet her.
There is so much I can tell you about this story but I don't want to go any further due to giving too much away.
I would like to say this though, we can't escape our pasts, they will come back to find you......eventually.
We can't escape our emotions or tragedies, but we can 'deal' with them so they don't consume or lives.
This is one awesome read that I am so glad I chose to read.

I think this is a very well written book. I liked Syd and felt horrible for what she went through in her past. I also liked Gunnar and thought he was a great hero! He was sweet to Syd and supported her while she regained her strength- mentally and physically. My problem with this book is the extra drama that was added. Syd's past is enough drama by itself, but the author added ex drama, sexual assault, vindictive ex employee and sabotage by a cop and competing restaurant owner. It was too much in my opinion, but the romance was great. Safety gang safe

Ok so after completing Mia Malone's books I asked a fellow book lover for authors with similar writing style or characters and I was recommended this author. I tried one of her other books but I couldn't stand the h so I moved on to this one and here we are now
The tragic accidental death of her son causes Syd to go on a downward spiral that led to alcoholism and eventually homelessness as she left her judgemental parents and cheating husband behind. One day as she's ravaging in the dumpster for food she's stopped by a female voice and meets the manager of local pub The Skipper Viv. Unbeknownst to Syd Viv would enable a change that helps to pull her out of the dark hole of grief and guilt and lead her to true love. But life is such that even with all Syd's been through she still has challenges to overcome as greed and jealousy bring turmoil to her new found second romances and a hateful creature attacks her
Gunnar is a divorced dad of two, he stumbles across Syd cleaning his pub's bathroom and acts the fool but they eventually get things straightened out. As Viv hires Syd Gunnar gets to know the woman behind the tiny frame and timid manner. As Gunnar falls for Syd so does his kids but his ex, a wannabe girlfriend, a vicious attack and a greedy businessman cause the hits to keep coming.

I enjoyed this story and especially Syd's journey. Her reclaiming her life is nicely balanced by the romantic aspect of the story so it reads as a romance and not chick lit.
I do admit that I found Syd cried too much and tried to run away too often but I smothered that hard hearted part of me 😂
Gunnar was a greart dad and H, he was bossy and Alpha but patient and sweet with Syd. They took a little time to build to the relationship which I appreciated because Syd needed some time to be able to even think of moving forward
I did think too much drama played off in front of the kids, Syd's nightmares, crying jags and disappearances as well as their mother's drunken antics was just too much for me in front of the children
All in all this was a good, steamy but heartbreaking read, since I loved Viv as a secondary character I'll check out her book as well

This story blew me away from the first page. It deals with serious issues but is also heart-warming as it proves that everyone deserves a second chance at happiness and redemption.
This author is one of my favourites as she writes about characters that are flawed and real. Sydney is dealing with demons from her past but with two words…”Please don’t”…, is given the lifeline she so desperately needs. She is a great character who has been dealt the worst hand possible but shows strength to overcome it.
Gunnar …where can I begin with Gunnar?!!! … He is sexy as hell, hard-working, a wonderful father and knows how to take care of those he loves. He is a new book boyfriend of mine.
I felt all emotions while reading this book…pity, desperation, anger, pain, joy, love, peace… This shows the talent of the writer, to engage the reader from the first page.
I absolutely LOVED this book and “From Dust” is one of my TOP reads so far this year and I cannot recommend it enough!

I absolutely loved this book. Syd had been to hell and back and was at rock bottom until someone cared enough to help her. Cue Viv - what a truly amazing side character that really does need her own story.
What did I like (love):
* Two main characters that are older (so no ridiculous manufacured drama).
* A really good story line with a lot going on that never felt rushed.
* The patience Gunnar had, no matter what bombshell was dropped on him there was no knee jerk reactions, he LISTENED and ACCEPTED.
* A gorgeous story of love, forgiveness (Syd had to learn to forgive herself), trust and redemption.
What I didn't like:
* This desperately needed an epilogue, I wanted to finish the book hugging my Kindle. Sadly this didn't happen and I felt the ending to be a bit rushed.
This is the first book I have read by this author and won't be the last. I truly hope she gives Viv a book, methinks that one will also be a doozy.
4.5 stars which would have been 5 if I had gotten my epilogue.

This read hit close to home for me in dealing with loss:( . H And h were great. This book was about healing and forgiving. I got to the end and it just ended no epilogue I really wanted to see them more in the future but other than that good read.
Safety: There is a sexual assault scene and two deaths. They both have exes who try and cause alittle drama but nothing real bad. No other women or man. Nothing really on their sexual pasts but neither were manwhores:) Alittle insecurities from h that causes her to run twice I think but not for long and really couldn't blame her too much.

OMG...This book is brilliant and I am soo not ready for it to be over yet. Definite book hangover going on here. Trying to thing back so I can put my review into words and I am tearing up again (mostly good tears).
When we meet Syd she is at her absolute very worst. She is living on the streets, sleeping in a shack, searching for food and essentials. Scared and thankful when she is caught and approached in the dumpster. After being isolated fo so long she is not sure how to react and certainly not feeling deserving.
From that one interaction we slowly see Syd transform. She slowly opens her heart and starts to feel again. Not only the wonderful new things she is experiencing but also the pain of the horrible tradegy that has brought her to this point in her life. She was so shamed by the people that were supposed to love her that when people start to show an interst she shys away again. But watching her find herself is heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time.
Syd is not the only character who transforms in this book. Gunner is this gruff and cranky man who is struggling to do right by his children while running the 'Skipper' his family resturant. His love and affection is evident when he is with his children. His personal life is not so happy but over time as he spends more time with Syd that changes. His love and understanding as Syd shares her secrets is astounding. Truly a wonderful transition that everyone notices.
Freya's writing just keeps getting better the more she writes. I love how her characters find their way into my heart. I find myself lost in her books, just flipping pages and ignoring life around me. If you haven't yet given her a try, I highly recommend her writing

My Review:
From Dust consists of emotive, heart squeezing, insightful, and thoughtful writing. It was a deeply moving and thought-provoking story, yet I did not find it maudlin or uncomfortably angsty, despite the tragic underpinnings of the premise. Freya Barker has mad skills and realistically flawed yet intelligent and lovable characters are one of her special gifts. I am deeply enamored with her style and could happily read her work every single day.
The main character of Sydney seems more than cursed. She has been decimated by a tragic loss and bad luck seems to continually plague her. She became one of the unseen homeless and lived by her wits in a solitary manner for several years, yet she still managed to retain her intelligence, dignity, and insightful observations. When discovered dumpster diving for her dinner outside a wharf bar, she was enticed inside for a warm meal instead. Ragged, malnourished, and taciturn, she quietly assists and vastly improved the lives of her rescuers as she began to heal.
The story never lagged or failed to keep me interested or invested, and despite the tragic history of the character that was revealed one layer at a time, Ms. Barker’s wry humor and uncanny insights retained the hope and light to the story while plucking at my heartstrings. I enjoyed this unique cast of characters and the big burly men with kind hearts most of all.

From Dust starts with Sydney who is living in a shed on a wharf in Boston. She is cold, hungry, and scared. I think she is at the end of her rope and you really feel for her. One night she is caught dumpster diving by an employee of the The Skipper a restaurant on the wharf.
Sydney’s life takes a turn for the better when she is offered a meal, warm place to stay, and then a job. Gunnar Lucas is the owner of The Skipper and he comes across as jaded and angry. But after getting to know Syd a little they both start to lean on each other and let their defenses down. I felt the progression for them was a bit too fast but I did like Gunnar and Sydney. Gunnar has been burned in the love dept. and Sydney is dealing with tragic events in her past. The story itself was heartbreaking.
Now I did read an advanced copy but there were inconsistencies in the story. The book setting starts off in Boston, MA but changes to Portland, ME. I can only hope that this was corrected with final editing and a beta reader catching it. I also found some phrasing awkward like it wasn’t set in the USA.
All being said it was a good story and I am glad Sydney found some peace.

I wanted to love this book but for whatever reason it just wasn't for me.
It took me a long time to read the book because I just didn't find myself wanting to pick it up. From the blurb I was excited to dig in, it sounded like a deep, gritty sort of book but I just don't feel like that come through in the story. It was very slow to start and whilst the characters' background stories were upsetting and at times, pretty dark, there wasn't ever anything that was too shocking.
Perhaps my dislike of the book is my own fault for reading in to it wrong, but I just couldn't like it and admit to being glad when I got to the end.
On a more positive note, it is written very well, I can't deny that, it's just that the story wasn't for me. I'm in the minority it would seem though, as a lot of people on my friends list are enjoying it.

One thing I've come to expect from Freya Barker's books is real characters and From Dust is no exception. Don't get me wrong, I love a billionaire dom as much as the next girl but I'll take a hard working, middle class guy over a billionaire any day of the week. That being said, while I loved the fact that the characters in From Dust are relatable, after all the 5 star reviews I saw on Goodreads I was expecting a little more.
To say that Sydney has been dealt a shitty hand in life is putting it mildly. She's been living on the streets for a year when she meets Viv, the manager of the pub that Syd's been living next to, and her life suddenly starts to turn around. Viv gives her a job, warm food, a shower, clean clothes, and the first social interaction she's had in way too long.
Syd is a bit of a mystery throughout most of the story. We know she's living with some major guilt over something that happened in her past but we don't actually find out the what or the how until pretty far in. And when we do? Holy hell, I cried like a baby. Having kids of my own I can totally relate to her and my heart just broke for everything she's been through. Luckily, she has Gunnar to be her rock and help her through her guilt.
Gunnar... What can I say about that man?! Seriously, I absolutely loved him. Of course he wasn't perfect and he had his moments but the love that he has for Syd and his kids, not to mention Viv, is so apparent in the way he acts that I can't fault him for anything. I mean, a hardworking single dad, that's protective and sexy to boot? Sign me up!
While I loved the characters, and even most of the story, I felt that all the drama was just a little too much. We have Gunnar dealing with an alcoholic ex wife, a jealous employee that wants him, competition from a restaurant that's trying to open up on the wharf where his pub is, and a dirty cop, then we have Syd dealing with her guilt, a fire that puts her out of her "home", an instance that happens with a disgruntled delivery guy, her ex, her parents, I mean I could go on and on with all the crap that these two had to deal with and it just got to be way too much for me.
That being said, From Dust wasn't exactly what I was hoping it would be, and in reality it's probably closer to a 3 star read for me but I bumped it up to 4 because I loved Gunnar so much. I'm not sure if this is a standalone or the start of a new series but I'd love a book about Viv. Overall, it was an okay read.

She's been living on the streets for a year when she meets Viv, the manager of the pub that Syd's been living next to, and her life suddenly starts to turn around. Viv gives her a job, warm food, a shower, clean clothes, and the first social interaction she's had in way too long.
Syd is a bit of a mystery throughout most of the story. We know she's living with some major guilt over something that happened in her past but we don't actually find out the what or the how until pretty far in. And when we do? Each book I read by Freya Barker has been better crafted than the last one. As an author, I think Ms. Barker has found her voice and in From Dust that voice is strong. This is an emotional story of one woman's journey back from her own personal hell. To me, Sidney is the epitome of a broken woman. The tragedy in her past would be nearly impossible for any woman to come to terms with. Add to that a husband and parents who turned on her in her time of need and you have a woman living on the edge. For four years Sidney hid from her past, until one kind soul offered her a helping hand, one she was unsure she should accept. Accepting could allow her past to find her, but that may be what she needs to reclaim her life and make a future for herself.
Living on the streets, Sidney (Syd) watched the activity surrounding The Skipper, a pub where she scrounged through the dumpsters for food. One cold night, Viv, the pub's manager offers Syd a hot meal and her first real human contact in nearly four years. That simple act of kindness completely turns Sidney's world around and into the orbit of Gunnar, the owner. Gunnar is a terrific character and Ms. Barker develops this alpha male into something special. While he is an imposing figure to the shy Syd, in the beginning; he is a man who loves his family and fiercely protects them at all costs. Gunnar's family is not only the children he has but also those that work for him at The Skipper. He learns a lot through the course of the book, including a bit about Viv's past that his friend never shared with him.
This story functions on so many levels, it truly kept me reading when I should have been doing other things. It is an emotional story of one woman's courage and her journey out of darkness. It is a very sexy, romantic love story between Gunnar and Sidney, and while he cannot fix her past, he is there to offer support for her future. There is suspense, intrigue and steamy sex scenes, all bonuses for me as a reader. I truly loved this story, and while it is supposed to be a stand alone book, I am hoping that Ms. Barker will revisit The Skipper and share more stories from the pub.

From Dust is a tragically beautiful story about a deeply scarred woman (Syd) who is literally pulled out from the depths of self inflicted pain after suffering an unimaginable loss.
Syd is found in a dumpster outside of The Skipper, a local pub/eatery, looking for food. While the pub's manager, Viv, is throwing out garbage, she notices Syd and coaxes her into the closed pub for a hot meal and a warm room. Viv senses more about Syd than what meets the eye.
Through Viv's kindness, encouragement and friendship, Syd starts to feel alive again. Gunner, the pub's owner, reluctantly lets her work at his establishment, relying on Viv's instincts, because he has no clue to what to make of Syd at this point.
The series of events that take place thereafter, will lead Syd down a path for a second chance, one that she's not sure that she's ready to follow.
"I’ve been ground down by my loss; Only a collection of particles that threaten to be blown apart and scattered by a strong wind. I’ve only just begun to gather myself from dust. Another blow would surely decimate me." Make no mistake, her loss is immeasurable; her guilt unbearable.
As Syd slowly comes to terms with her tragedy, she doesn't have to do it alone; she has been given a circle of friends who have become her new family—they surround her with love, acceptance and guidance; Gunner and his kids, Emmy & Dex, have fallen hard for Syd as well. Syd needs to find redemption and forgiveness towards herself because she's so worth it. Are there bumps in the road? Absolutely. Anything in life that's worth fighting for, sometimes the bigger the battle, there will be wounds that need to be be healed. Her story offers testament to the adage ~ what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger. Flawlessly written, colorful attention to detail, along with a magnificent cast of thoughtful characters, easily made this a five "little bird" star read for me. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this series—Cruel Water releases on March 3, 2016. I highly recommend reading this treasure from the talented Freya Barker.

4.5 star rating only because of the seemingly rushed ending. Otherwise this was one emotional journey riddled with family, heartache, and a beautiful romance. Syd's story will pull you in and claim your heart when you hear and feel what she has been through. With the love of a beautiful man, his two children, and a new found friend, Syd makes it her mission to be strong and resilient in her quest to live. She is one remarkable character as is the gruff and hugely passionate man, Gunnar, that strengths her will to trust again. Told in alternating POV's between Syd and Gunnar, it is the story of one woman taking back her life and finding a love so sensual and consuming. It was difficult to see the two main characters, while being in their late 30’s and early 40’s, experience some of life’s hardest obstacles. I really don't want to say much more about this book because it would give away spoilers, but I will say that Syd's story was first one of sorrow and then eventually one of triumph. I was totally blown away by the author's brilliant writing and her ability to make me feel such passion and emotion. One powerful book not to be missed!

This story is not a romance. It's scary and dangerous when the good guys behave like the bad ones and there always is an excuse for their behaviour.
This author have a fondness for jackass heroes and mute/distressed/wimpy/little mousey thing heroines.
Here are some quotes:
The hero talking about his ex:
"I'll kill her before I let her kill the light in my kids". The Hero.
The heroine (homeless for five years, I think) hurts herself with a slipping knife. Enters the hero: her jeans are puddle around her ankles and her exposed legs tell me she is even more malnourished than I suspected. I'm almost sickened at the pang of lust that stirs my cock at the sight of the pale expanse of skin and the plain cotton panties.
The hero and his friends:
Hero: "This is Syd, and she works here, so don't bug her". (She is looking shyly or something at the floor) He growls at his team.
Friend:"Wasn't looking to bug her, Guns, just familiarizing myself with the hot mama I'll be thinking of when I whack off tonight."
Hero: "But they are all good guys, really. They just get a bit rambunctious at times".
Other woman is behaving badly. And another good guy says: "What the hell is up with her?[...] She is being a bitch. Must be that time of the month or something".

This was my first book by this author and probably my last. I did DNF at 44%. Writing style was ok, but too much victimization for the female protagonist: Syd the victim that lost her son; Syd the alcoholic; Syd the homeless victim for five years; Syd the victim of unwanted advances by Jack; Syd the victim of an vicious attack and sexual assault by Jack; Syd who kills her attacker. Enough already!!! All this in just the first 44% of the book!
Then you have Gunnar, father of two with an ex who is also an alcoholic and a terrible mother. He's also running a pub that's short-staffed and has a restaurant competitor sniffing around. Then he has Syd on his hands, the perpetual victim. Does he not have enough to deal with? Shuffling his kids around trying to find someone to watch them? He did not need someone like Syd in his life especially right now.
A huge peeve for me in a story is when a character is assaulted with injuries, and they're all but forgotten in the next page. This was not the case here, it was worse. Syd is attacked, sexually assaulted and learns the next day that she killed her attacker. A lot to cope with for sure. And what do Gunnar and Syd do...the initiate their attraction for each other, stirring up sexual desires. Seriously?!!! This was the last straw for me.
Then you have Gunnar, father of two with an ex who is also an alcoholic and a terrible mother. He's also running a pub that's short-staffed and has a restaurant competitor sniffing around. Then he has Syd on his hands, the perpetual victim. Does he not have enough to deal with? Shuffling his kids around trying to find someone to watch them? Oh my Lord! Such an amazingly and beautifully written book. I loved it, I truly did and I know that this story will stay with me for a very long time.
I rather enjoy being lost in the world that the author describes for me, and what a world Freya creates! I felt like I was living along side of her characters and that these were my friends. I felt their pain and completely relished their happiness and joy.
Very rarely will I feel compelled to make notes or write things down while reading a book; but I found myself doing it quite often while reading From Dust.
My favorite quote is by Gunnar "I feel raw and battered from the swirling emotions ..." This sums up my experience reading From Dust succinctly. Me too, Gunnar, ME TOO!
Other thoughts that came to mind while reading:
Amazing. Profound. Emotional. Deep. Heart Wrenching. Lovely.
Left me reeling and feeling gutted.
A marvelous story of enduring and ultimately, survival at its greatest!
