Penelope Jones Halsall
aka Caroline Courtney, Annie Groves, Lydia Hitchcock, Melinda Wright

Penelope "Penny" Jones was born on November 24, 1946 at about seven pounds in a nursing home in Preston, Lancashire, England. She was the first child of Anthony Winn Jones, an engineer, who died at 85, and his wife Margaret Louise Groves Jones. She has a brother, Anthony, and a sister, Prudence "Pru".

She had been a keen reader from the childhood - her mother used to leave her in the children's section of their local library whilst she changed her father's library books. She was a storyteller long before she began to write romantic fiction. At the age of eight, she was creating serialized bedtime stories, featuring make-believe adventures, for her younger sister Prue, who was always the heroine. At eleven, she fell in love with Mills & Boon, and with their heroes. In those days the books could only be obtained via private lending libraries, and she quickly became a devoted fan; she was thrilled to bits when the books went on full sale in shops and she could have them for keeps.

Penny left grammar school in Rochdale with O-Levels in English Language, English Literature and Geography. She first discovered Mills & Boon books, via a girl she worked with. She married Steve Halsall, an accountant and a "lovely man", who smoked and drank too heavily, and suffered oral cancer with bravery and dignity. Her husband bought her the small electric typewriter on which she typed her first novels, at a time when he could ill afford it. He died at the beginning of 21st century.

She earned a living as a writer since the 1970s when, as a shorthand typist, she entered a competition run by the Romantic Novelists' Association. Although she didn't win, Penny found an agent who was looking for a new Georgette Heyer. She published four regency novels as Caroline Courtney, before changing her nom de plume to Melinda Wright for three air-hostess romps and then she wrote two thrillers as Lydia Hitchcock. Soon after that, Mills and Boon accepted her first novel for them, Falcon's Prey as Penny Jordan. However, for her more historical romance novels, she adopted her mother's maiden-name to become Annie Groves. Almost 70 of her 167 Mills and Boon novels have been sold worldwide.

Penny Halsall lived in a neo-Georgian house in Nantwich, Cheshire, with her Alsatian Sheba and cat Posh. She worked from home, in her kitchen, surrounded by her pets, and welcomed interruptions from her friends and family.

Re Lover By Deception - Penny Jordan gives us book two of her Sweet Revenge/Seduction series.

This time 37 year old widow Anna is the lady waiting for her Scooby Snack. When the last book ended, Anna and the younger, but wealthier with a murkier past Dee - who is the main instigator of the overarching plot to bring down Evil Nematode Julian Cox- had just tried to set Julian up with a financial con.

Dee gave Anna £50,000 to try and entice Nematode Julian into some sort of shady financial deal. While Dee was wandering off page in the mists of HPlandia, Anna gave Julian the money 'for investment' as directed, but now Dee has returned and Anna has some bad news.

While Anna is waiting to relay her Julian Cox news to Dee, a few towns over our hero - Hereward - a multimillionaire retired businessman now engaged in running a lot of work training programs for youngsters, has just learned that his beloved younger classics scholar brother has been conned out of £5000 the young man needed for grad school.

When pushed, Ward's younger brother shows him a vague investment contract listing both Julian and Anna's names. Ward instantly runs to print off the free trial offer course certificate for our favorite LaToya Jackson Online Detective School and despite having a full team of legal investigators at his disposal, decides this is one villainous duo he will handle himself.

So as Anna explains to Dee that Julian Cox essentially took the £50,000 and ran off to another country, Ward is honing in on Anna and Dee's small English market town. When he arrives, Dee has left again to visit a sick aunt, after telling Anna that the absconding larceny of Nematode Julian is not her fault.

Anna is very nice person whose young husband was lost at sea many years earlier. Anna had to move away from Cornwall because of her sad memories and moved to the town of Rye, where she became good friends with Beth, Kelly and Dee and devoted herself to genteel widowhood and volunteering.

Anna also has a very adorable white puffball rescue dog named Missie and a big tom cat named Whittaker, they are a little family outside in their garden when Ward arrives and immediately starts verbally attacking Anna.

Anna is a little scared, but valiantly jumps in to save Missie when Missie's doggie enthusiasm puts her too close to an infuriated Ward. Ward has no intentions of hurting Missie, but he does find it rather jolting that a woman who is a financial con artist bilking innocent scholars out of their grad school money would be so protective of such a rag mop of a dog.

When Ward demands that Anna pay back the £5000 that she supposedly conned out of his younger brother, Anna thinks that maybe Ward can help Dee prove Nematode Julian is a criminal. So she tells him to return in the morning. Ward storms off and in the aftermath of all the drama, Anna steps on her garden hoe and manages to knock herself out.

Ward decides to return to question Anna further and to prevent her doing a runner, but what he finds is an agitated Missie doggily demanding Ward help her person and Anna is passed out cold. Ward gallantly swoops up Missie and Anna and it is off to hospital we go.

When Anna finally wakes up, she has AMNESIA and Ward allows her to think that they are in a loving relationship. Both Anna and Ward had been feeling the Lurve Force Mojo Tension earlier, so it comes as no surprise to anyone that Anna and Ward start in on the Purple Passion Boudoir Moments that very night.

Ward feels a little bad for being so deceptive, but Anna is totally rocking his world and Anna thinks that they are an established pair. There is a lot of lurve club events and Ward is continually amazed at how kind Anna is, he is also shocked by the amount of volunteering she does.

Eventually Ward convinces Anna and Missie and Whittaker to go to his home a few towns over. Once there Whittaker uses his SuperCat Sense to show Anna the documents about Nematode Julian that Ward left out on his desk.

Anna's memory returns in a blinding rush and she is horrified at how Ward has deceived her and heartbroken that he isn't really in love with her. Anna doesn't let Ward know that she knows about his little masquerade tho.

She gives Ward a huge Purple Passion Tower of Power Ride Event to exhaust him and while Ward is sleeping, she leaves a check for £5000 and takes Missie and Whittaker back to her home. Ward wakes up alone and realizes that he must have gotten something wrong, but his step father is in hospital, so he can't chase after Anna.

Anna goes to Dee and explains her whole sad situation. While Anna is having a mopey heartbreak moment, Ward is getting lectured by his mother about hasty judgments and not letting people explain themselves.

Ward eventually makes it to Anna's house after his stepfather is deemed to be recovering and Dee waylays him before he can grovel at Anna's feet. Once again Dee's machinations mess everything up, tho fortunately this time no one is in danger of being attacked, as Dee forcibly drives Ward away.

Dee tells Anna that she sent Ward off and since Anna just had an enlightening conversation with Ward's mum about Ward's emotional state of love, she goes haring off after Ward to get to him to declare himself by hinting she might be pregnant.

Ward is overjoyed at the prospect, he is sorry he ever misjudged Anna as a con artist criminal and Dee set him straight about the Nematode Julian's forgeries. So Ward declares True Love for Anna forever and Anna rushes him right back into bed, in the unlikely event that Ward's motilators haven't hit the baby making target yet.

We leave two of our couples happy and in love and now await news from Beth - she has been in Europe buying exotic glass tableware and it sounds like things have been happening during her travels.

What kind of things and who has been involved in them will be the subject of our third and penultimate PJ HPlandia Suspense outing.

The title is accurate. “Retired” tycoon H confronts the widow lady h for duping his nephew out of five thousand pounds. Widow lady has also been duped by the same conman, but she doesn’t/can’t explain the true circumstances to the angry hero because she is overcome by guilt and lust.

Hero is also attracted so he storms off to regroup. Heroine decides to do a spot of gardening to calm down, steps on a rake and knocks herself out.

When she wakes up in the hospital with partial amnesia, hero is at her side. Heroine thinks they are lovers and hero goes along with it – including have sex with the heroine while he’s taking care of her at her house.

They eventually go north to the Hero’s Yorkshire manor house. Hero tries to figure out what to do – he’s attracted to a thief, but his behavior has been no better. The heroine recovers her memory when she sees some papers on the hero’s desk. She stumbles in a daze and then gets lost on the moors in the mist.

This angst doesn’t last long. Heroine returns to her psycho friend* to lick her wounds. Luckily the hero’s mother finds her phone number and helps the heroine sort out the misunderstanding.
Hero tracks her down for an HEA

This is weak tea amnesia – the cartoonish rake stepping was hard to believe. Same with the heroine’s personality transplant from dried up widow to sex kitten. Pulling the hero’s mother out of thin air to engineer a reconciliation was also jarring.

I liked the H/h together, don’t get me wrong. Their romance was sweet and all’s fair in love and amnesia, so I don’t really blame the hero. The premise of this series (revenge on a conman) was really annoying, though and there were quite a few passages about the other sequel characters that had nothing to do with this H/h.

Boogenhagen has all the details in her spoiler review.

*I know she’s the heroine of the next story, but her obsession with this guy and how she dragged her friends into it is not a good look.

Another gem by my favorite author. Loved the amnesia trope and the sweet vulnerable heroine. Hero was not a manwhore and heroine is a widow and celibate for many years.

Decent enough although rather unbelievable. It's amnesia and you all know I'm an amnesia junkie. The heroine was too saccharine sweet and super loving while she had amnesia. It just wasn't real realistic that she would leap to the conclusion that the person who took her to the hospital was her lover. Still a fairly fun little read but not real memorable or rereadable.

Flat, flat flat. The heroine was so cloying, the hero was absurd, the whole thing fell flat on its face without any finesse.

Somewhat interesting because the protagonist couple are older than the usual (he's 42, she's 37), and because they're a pair of do-gooders (he gives away money left and right, she does meals-on-wheels etc.). Otherwise, as delightfully ridiculous as amnesia plots are, this was spoiled a little by the heroine's excessive breathy joy, which was of course based on ... deception!!!

The first two books in this series aren't very good. This one was the second, and I just did not like the hero at all. I know he wanted revenge, but better make sure the person you're getting revenge on is the right one. He was also completely unethical and cruel to a very vulnerable heroine. I don't recommend the first two books in this series. The second two were much better.

This is the second book of the quartet, (The Mistress Assignment, Lover by Deception, a Treacherous Seduction, and The Marriage Resolution in order). Friends, Dee, Anne, Beth and Kelly try to get back at the evil Julian Cox for his con-artist ways.
In this book, we have an unusual heroine for HPLandia... a mature one. Anne is a 37 year old widow, and Ward a 42 year old divorced man.
When Ward’s nephew confesses that he’s been duped by a con-artist, Ward rides in to the rescue. Anne’s name was on the papers that the despicable Julian Cox handed to the naïve nephew, and so Ward automatically assumes she was part of the scam.
Ultimately, Anne indulges in that wonderful trope, hysterical amnesia! Under her memory loss, she thinks that she and Ward are lovers, and despite his attempts to keep his distance, she climbs into bed naked with him, rubs herself all over him... and later (when her memory returns) gets mad that he didn’t resist what was being freely offered!
Truthfully, the situation is what I might term, morally ambiguous. Ward doesn’t come right out and tell her he isn’t her lover, but then, Anne didn’t come right out and tell him she wasn’t involved in the scam!
Unusually for HPLandia, this was actually all resolved rather quickly, despite heated hindrance from the annoying Dee. Ward immediately realizes Anne couldn’t have done it when Dee tells him so (and he’s already admitted his feelings beforehand), and Anne immediately forgives him when his mother calls her.
It’s all resolved, and the heroine just knows she’s pregnant even though they’ve been intimate only a few days!
It’s a happy ending, without too much angst, lasting for way too long!
On a side note, the heroine of the next in the series, is being annoyingly silly...
An enjoyable, if tropey Penny Jordan romance.

In the second book of this quartet Dee is still determined to expose Julian Cox for a thieving liar and she enlists the help of Anna Trewayne.
But amidst this Ward's half brother Ritchie gets caught up in Julian's scams and through a quirk Anna is implicated so Ward is hot footing it to her door for revenge but after a bout of amnesia and mistaken identity ends up finding love instead...
A sweet modern love story from the queen of romance Penny Jordan.

Ward Hunter had reason to despise Anna Trewayne, and an accident placed her at his mercy. Her memory lost, she mistakenly believed Ward to be a friend and lover. He'd come to reclaim the money he though she'd inveigled from his brother, but had been drawn by Anna's tantalising sensuality into her home, her arms her bed. How would she react when she did eventually regain her memory and realised the deception that had been played on her?

Not my favorite

The h acted in ways that seemed way to forward and out of character for the shy lonely women we are told about at the beginning of the book. And the H acted like a bug jerk and never really apologized sufficiently. I’ve read better from this line.

Quite risqué for its time, really. Lots of explicit sex and talk of aubergines that don’t usually exist in HPlandia. Ward seems hunky. I almost liked this more, but something was missing.

I'm a sucker for an amnesia plot and normally I would be not happy about the heroes actions but hey, it's Romancelandia and the rules are different.

The second friend, Anna is an older woman at thirty seven and a widow. She is comfortably off and does good works in the village. When Dee asks her to help out in the two pronged plan to expose Julian Cox, she agrees reluctantly but is persuaded to pretend to want Julian to help her invest some money which would be supplied by Dee.

It's therefore a surprise to her when attractive mature man Ward arrives on her doorstep, seeking redress for five thousand pounds she and her partner Julian scammed out of his younger half-brother.

She stalls him, needing to speak to Dee, but when she has an accident and loses her memory, it's Ward who finds her and takes her to hospital. Through a catalogue of errors, everyone seems to think he's her "friend" and he doesn't do anything to disabuse them, wanting to keep an eye on the scammer.

Anna wakes up and sees a man she feels an instant connection with and assumes Ward is her lover. Once again Ward doesn't disabuse her. His feelings are more than a little confused at this point but he takes her home, expecting her to remember everything at any moment so he can get the money back but things escalate once they are alone.

It's pretty much a case of the wish being father to the thought with Anna, who sees no reason why she shouldn't be with her lover. Which of course leads to lots of...complications.

I couldn't help enjoying this story despite the obvious ethical dilemma and the ending was lovely. The epilogue is the set up for book three.

Kacau gak sih... ^^

3.5 stars. I liked this one pretty well, though I skimmed a lot of the non-romance plot. I thought the amnesia was fun -- liked seeing a heroine who was innocently loving because of her amnesia, forcing the hero to accept her attentions despite what he believes about her. Wish it had more of an epilogue, though I imagine there may be sneak peeks back at these characters in the later books in this series.
