With the masses conspiring against him, wasn't it merely a matter of time before poor Handa-kun came to grievous bodily harm?? But maybe a bout of amnesia is just what the doctor ordered. Forgetting himself, won't Handa-kun escape his greatest enemy of all?? Uhhhh...maybe not.

I'm starting to get it, but at the same time it's becoming a little samey. Wouldn't mind more of this militant feminist student council president.

Mau sampe berapa halaman atau volume, ya kayaknya masih bakal he got probelms in understanding people's feelings/ actions towards him. Lucu2 nggonduk gitu wkwkwkwk

At this point, if life for Handa-kun doesn't get any easier, then it probably never will.

The hysterics keep on coming, as Handa now has his own posse (unofficially): a truant (Tsutsui), a failed teen model (Reo), the vice-class rep (Aizawa), a sporto (Dash), and an "average" guy (Yukio). The fact that this motley crew of underperformers with inferiority complexes are labeled "second-year movers and shakers" is as much a ludicrous assessment-of-character as it is a trap for just how poorly sociable Handa and his friends truly are. In Volume 3, readers will discover just how much Handa's schoolmates adore/despise him -- often at his request.

The narrative structure of this manga continues to shift. It's not perfect, but it's definitely getting better. Whereas in previous volumes, the author vacillated between first-person musings and a more detached glance from above, this third volume dabbles with both perspectives -- but more effectively than before. How so? Consistency. There are lead-in stories, guided by secondary or tertiary characters, which are then followed by corollary chapters, of which Handa himself is the focus.

For example, readers meet student council bigshot Sawako Tennouji, a self-acknowledged man-hater and prominent advocate for women's authority in every social strata accessible. Naturally, Sawako finds Handa's cold demeanor off-putting. Her reckless activism results in a number of amusing crash-and-burn scenarios (the least of which includes falling down multiple stairs in a blaze of inglorious panic), proving, as always, that nobody can take on the blighted calligrapher without the young man's bad luck rubbing off on them.

The subsequent chapter to Sawako's escapades tracks Handa's brief amnesia, and the impact this has on his posse of oddball friends, including the ever-reliable Kawafuji. There is certainly a brand of convenience made possible by assumed chapter-pairings like this, but for the most part, the focused humor works.

Although doubtful, it would be nice to see a character like Sawako return later in HANDA-KUN. She's intelligent, motivated, and has a feel for the very social decorums to which Handa purports phenomenal ignorance.

The same can be said of fellow student and fortune-teller aficionada, Tsugumi, whose comical obsession with Handa's palm results in the delightful revelation that the young calligrapher "possesses an extraordinary persecution complex," is "unbelievably ordinary," and is doomed to a life of devastating ("extremely harsh") loneliness. Tsugumi sugarcoats the palm reading for Handa's buddies, but it's clear her insight is spot-on. Wouldn't it be nice for a character like her to return in later chapters, to justify or "check" the veracity of her claims?

Right now, HANDA-KUN is very much a boys-will-be-boys type of manga. It's fun, but with a lack of diversity comes a lack of ingenuity. As of right now, there are zero recurring female characters of import. This needs to change.

Hiburan banget baca handa-kun karna ceritain zaman sekolahnya handa.

I'm still not feeling this series at all. I hope Handa stops having the "everyone hates me" vibe and actually becomes friends with the other characters because the potential is there.

In Summary

A man-hating student president and a fortune-telling classmate join the cast, but it’s still the wild comments of the Aizawa, Reo, Tsutsui, and Kondou foursome that carry this series. However, a bout of amnesia changes things up by bringing out a completely different side of Handa, and a trip to the game center with Kawafuji provides a refreshing break from the Handa-enthralled masses.

The Review

In the previous volume, Yoshino-sensei introduced a couple new male characters; in this volume, we get new female characters. The first is Sawako Tennouji, the student council president. While it doesn’t look like she will be appearing as regularly as the self-declared “Handa Army” (i.e., Aizawa, Reo, Tsutsui, and Kondou), that doesn’t make her any less wacky. An extreme manhater, she wears a boys uniform and commands the admiration of the student council and all the girls at school. Not surprisingly, she sets her sights on destroying Handa, but she’s interesting in how readily she uses slander to take him down. It’s inevitable that she’ll fall victim to HND syndrome, but things take an unexpected twist when she inadvertently causes Handa to lose his memory.

In most manga, this would result in consternation; in Handa’s case, it’s a chance to see the student he would’ve been if he didn’t think everyone hated him. While he no longer has a persecution complex, Handa’s delusions take another form. Tennouji quickly drops from the foreground to be replaced by the Handa Army, who are unable to cope with the perky new Handa. The funniest part of this chapter is when the entire school rejects Handa because they think he’s another fake.

After the amnesia chapter, we have a chapter with Kawafuji, the one person who sees Handa as he actually is. A trip to the game center starts as an attempt to help Handa recover from the extreme methods used to recover his memories, but it quickly devolves into Kawafuji laughing at his friend’s expense. The Handa of Barakamon is notoriously inept at anything but calligraphy, and this chapter brings some of that physical humor to Handa-kun.

Then another person gets a glimpse of the real Handa. Enter Tsugumi, a schoolmate with a talent for palm-reading. She, like Tennouji, looks like a relatively minor character, and most of the energy from this arc comes from the reactions of the Handa Army. However, her reading of Handa’s future and how she interprets it should be hilarious to Barakamon fans.

Extras include bonus manga, translation notes, and an installment of “Handa-Kun News.”

Hilarious doesn't even come close to describing this Manga

Hands is back again for more awkward encounters with his school mates. He gets to meet the student council, a cross-dresser, a fortune teller, a fellow school mate, and a whole new side to himself he never me he had. Overall the laughs keep coming, and they are mixed with a childish sense of warmth a great read for children of all ages.

3.5 probably, the weakness of the plot is getting to me, I want some overarching story, give me a calligraphy contest or something, just more than the army fawning over him from a distance and Handa's ever more depressing inability to interact with people. Kawafuji is seeming more and more like an enemy rather than a friend! I kind of feel like I need to reread the original series to remember how Handa was as an adult.

i have not read a manga in a while. And I am glad this is the manga that I chose to read first.

Handa-kun is just a peculiar guy whose view of his fellow schoolmates have been twisted due to his best friend.

A funny manga to read and laugh with from the beginning to the end.

Especially with the the Handa-kun army which makes handakun think it is a group of people who want to severely hurt him.

His way of running away makes all his schoolmates believe he is a coll untouchable guy when in reality all he wants is a friend but in return he thinks everyone despises him

Hillarious, Cannot wait to finish the series in order to watch the anime!
