Warhammer 40,000

The Arkunasha War

Rate this book

Witness the origin of a legend... When the Tau colony on Arkunasha is attacked by Warboss Gitbiter, a brutal war of attrition ensues. The Tau's only hope of survival is Shas'o Vior'la Kais Mont'yr. Originally dispatched to Arkunasha to train its Fire Warriors, the Shas'o must now teach them the true meaning of battle. Such is his prowess and ability during the conflict that he comes to be known by another name, shovah, meaning 'farsight'. Little do the Orks realise who they are truly up against.

Read it because
It's a glimpse into the early days of one of the greatest heroes of the Tau Empire, and just why he became so famous (before he fell from grace and became a byword for treachery, obviously).

The Arkunasha War felt exceptionally bland.

From the Tau terminology (usually followed by plain english/imperial translations, even within dialogue) over the way O'Shovah was refered to as "the shas'o" almost through the entire story, and the massive missed opportunities depicting the Arkunasha War properly, this was a disappointment both stylistically as in scope. O'Shovah felt competent, but not imposing. Seeing how his melee doctrine basically started with this conflict, there was nothing of that here. The effect of the world on the ork forces was missing (though I am not sure how much of it was on the cards when this was written), and in general the orks were... boring.

There were some ork PoV scenes, which were supposed to be comedic, but they detracted from the story and the threat. Even their dialogue was cringeworthy. Those scenes should've been cut and the word count better invested in the conflict. In general, the war was underdeveloped.

Not a fan of this one in any way.

This short doesn't jive with what I read in the Farsight Enclaves Codex. Where was editing here?

AS an old warhammer 40k player my knowledge of the tau is none existent. THIS was a nice short book to get me into the swing of things. Could do with a very short history or introduction but I enjoyed it
