Jake & Boo #1

Not a Werewolf

Rate this book
When perpetual student Jake Hillebrand starts having strange dreams, no theory is too outlandish - even the possibility that he has become a werewolf. His best friend Don is no help, though – he doesn’t even believe in werewolves! When the dreams lead Jake and Don to the body of a despised developer dumped along a Houston bayou, the only ones listening to Jake's theories are the dishy Detective Ruben Petreski and Jake's feline visitor, Boo. In a historic neighborhood under threat from developers, everyone is a suspect, but so far all Jake's new-found psychic abilities seem to be good for is finding kittens and talking to squirrels. He's really going to have to up his game if he wants to escape the killer's attention - and catch Detective Petreski's. Contains excessive caffeine intake, cats, irritable detectives, lots of carbs, and no werewolves.

5/31/18 update: Just as enjoyable the 2nd time around. Madeline Kirby is amazing. The sequel is out now, and there's a third book currently in work. :D

~~~~~
Absolutely delightful -- smart and funny and charming and just plain fun. The banter between Jake and his BFF Don in the opening pages was irresistible; it drew me right in and set the tone for the loopy adventure that follows.
Jake has been reading too much paranormal m/m romance. Then again, maybe not -- because his life is about to turn into something suspiciously akin to his taste in fiction. His easy rapport with animals seems to be developing into something deeper, and his dreams are overlapping disturbingly with waking reality. Oh, and there's a murder. And a hunky homicide detective investigating it -- one who's strangely tolerant of Jake's paranormal proclivities. Plus various cats, dogs, and squirrels, some of whom may or may not be more than they seem. Much fun ensues.
It's a rare joy to find something lightweight and funny that's so well written. I was excited to see that it's the first in a series -- and then disappointed to learn that so far it's the ONLY one in the series. But Madeline Kirby is on my radar now and I'll be eagerly watching for more.
Sweet, quirky, funny, charming at times. But I didn’t find the mystery to be particularly interesting and the romance was barely developed. Sadly, I doubt I’ll remember this story. If you’re expecting a full blown shifter story, you might want to skip this one. Mostly a “cozy mystery”.
3.5. I’ll read the next one. Maybe Jake’ll work out his major?
Oh, and I learned in this book that an ice pick is an every day household item in Texas for doing things with ice cubes. I thought they were a big thing like an axe that you only had in places like Alaska, and to kill Trotsky with.
See? Reading is educational!
I picked this up cheap in the last Smashwords sale and am here to report that it's very silly (despite the murder mystery) and a lot of fun. I guess you could call it a cozy, that is a member of a genre I emphatically dislike, pace Gregory Ashe, but really what it is, is off-kilter/slightly deranged in a pleasing way. Set in that alternate universe where an LEO love interest doesn't bring my hackles up. I think it's something to do with the existence of shifters: it gives enough "that world is not this one" that I can relax and pretend the carceral-industrial complex doesn't exist, JFC that got heavy fast, sorry.
Jake is criminally slow in figuring out the whole deal with the friendly black cat. My dude, think for two seconds!
Yes, will read the next in the series. Will even pay full price. ($2.99, not exactly extortionate.)
Perpetual university student Jake Hillebrand’s dreams have taken a rather disturbing turn; in fact, one might even say they’ve developed nightmarish overtones. Jake can sense that he’s been dreaming from the point of view of a dog, which is what leads him to confess to his best friend, Don, that he might be a werewolf. Of course, as one would expect, Don is skeptical. I mean, a werewolf? Really? Jake does love a good Paranormal Romance, so it’s possible his imagination might be influenced just a bit by the books he consumes (which is comedically ironic). But then Jake leads Don to the site of the first dream, and they rescue the kitten Jake had seen there. Then...it’s not quite so comical anymore. Don’s disbelief is further challenged when they get to the scene of Jake’s second dream, a nightmarish murderscape that shook Jake to his very core. Now, Don can no longer deny with any conviction that Jake’s dreams are prophetic.
Jake meeting Detective Ruben Petreski at the scene of a property developer’s murder is not exactly a love at first sight affair, but it doesn’t take long before Petreski makes it known that he’s concerned about Jake’s wellbeing in more than a casual, professional way. When a black cat shows up on Jake’s doorstep and he spontaneously names the cat Boo, evidence points to there being something unusual about both Jake and Boo. It’s Petreski who helps Jake figure out what that something is when the squirrel Jake has been feeding tells Jake his name is Raymond…Raymond the Squirrel ::cue delight::
Jake is not only an apparent animal magnet, though; he’s a people magnet as well, which works to his advantage. People like to chit-chat with Jake, and that along with his supernatural connection to the critters, as well as his amateur sleuthing with Don, all converge to allow Jake to help solve the mystery of Clarence Wilton’s untimely and violent demise. If it doesn’t kill Jake first, that is. Or Petreski’s partner, Perez, doesn’t off Jake herself (there’s some backstory there that supports this statement).
This is not a hardboiled police procedural sort of murder mystery, it's a cozy, and one of its best attributes, apart from its oozing with charm, is that it’s not an emotionally taxing read, which is precisely what I needed when I read it: a light, easy-breezy and undemanding story that offered me the chance to ignore the real world for a while. I went into it with zero expectations and came out on the other side of it surprised by how much I enjoyed giving my time to it. Not a Werewolf didn’t draw me in immediately, it charmed me in, and that was a sincere revelation.
Part Urban Fantasy, part cozy mystery, and fully adorable, Not a Werewolf is a low angst kind of read that defines pure, unadulterated escapism, and I really can’t overstate its adorability factor enough. It made me smile, and I can never fault a book for that.
Very nice cozy mystery. I liked all the characters (except the bad guy); they're sweet and genuine, no dramatic exaggeration.
Mystery was alright, and the romance was kinda a mix between insta-like and slow burn, maybe because there's no sex at all (not even a solo jerk off, thank god!), only kisses.
Off to read the second book now!
PS: You'll love Boo. I wish I have a cat like him.
3.5 stars
My friend texted me about this book, "Mi, Not a Werewolf is not bad. I only reached 51% myself. Mystery + cats + only kissing so far". About an hour later, she texted again, "Done. Nice cozy mystery. No sex at all". Guess which words that make me curious to give it a shot? If you guess "cats" and "no sex" you will be absolutely right *laugh*
This is rather quirky, I admit. I didn't check out the blurb when I first started -- a practice I've done for the past several months to most of my current reads to keep myself surprised.
Thus initially, I wonder which way the book is heading. Especially with Jake seemingly able to bond/connect/understand animals -- he is either a combination of Snow White or Dr. Doolittle *laugh*. Is this a contemporary with a touch of paranormal element? Or will this be a paranormal mystery?
But after a while, I decided to just enjoy the flow. I liked Jake, I liked Jake's best friend Don, and I absolutely LOVED the cats!! It was written in a nice flow.
The mystery is not very front and center, IMHO, because Jake is a student. He may done research through computer with Don, but the detective in this book is Jake's love interest, Detective Ruben Petreski. Which means most of the murder investigation is done off page by the detectives (this book is written in 1st person POV, through Jake's perspective).
This could easily be a solid four-stars for me if not for one thing. . I had to re-read the last two chapters to check whether I miss the information. But nope, Jake never asks Ruben about it.
*grumbles*
What sweet little pick me up this book is. It completely managed to surprise me and intrigue me from the start. From the opening line to the very end I was engrossed in the story.
The characters jump off the pages and are easy to relate to and understand. They are humorous in their interactions as well as their uniqueness. Really there are several main characters it seems. Not just Jake and Petreski, but also Jake’s best friend Don. And let's not forget the cats. They definitely have their own personalities.
This story was simply a fun read. From Jake learning about himself and his newly discovered abilities, to discovery of the sweet little three-legged kitten, to Jake and Don somehow getting involved in solving murders, Plus there is the slowly developing romance between Jake and Petreski.
There is so much humor throughout this story. I was literally laughing my ass off through much of it. It was fast paced with a good deal of wacky thrown that just made it a pleasure to read.
I am highly looking forward to reading the next book in the Jake and Boo series.
The book is fast paced and never bogs down in unnecessary detail, there isn't much action but the characters make the most of what there is. It's a sweet story with intriguing and well rounded characters that you feel a connection to. The interaction between Don & Jake is enjoyable and companionable, like sitting down with old friends and spending an afternoon catching up.
The mystery isn't terribly twisty, the suspect list being fairly short, it's not hard to work out the killerbut it wasn't something I knew 15 pages in and just waited impatiently for everyone else to figure out either.
3.9 stars rounded up. This story was such a nice surprise from a new to me author. The writing had plenty of charm and humour, which led to an engaging combination of witty dialogue, unusual shifters, emerging romance and a mild mystery. I eagerly look forward to the sequel!
I'm so glad I gave this author and this series a chance because I love it so far! The title and the blurb made it sound like a cozy, feel-good (except for the murders) mystery who-dunnit and I got exactly what I was expecting. The banter between Jake and his best friend, Don, was hilarious and then when the cats showed up, everything became even more hilarious. This is very light on the romance and I consider it more cozy mystery with a pinch of romance but it was the perfect start to a series that I didn't know I needed! I'm so excited to read the next story :)
this was a really nice read and I had a lot of fun reading it ... the only problem was that nothing was really surprising and a lot of things was very obvious from the beginning.
Jake was a fun character, Don was a great best friend. I loved the cats and the squirrel ...
so all in all it was a nice read and something for rainy days when you are not in the best of moods. so I'll keep the next book on my TBR to improve my mood.
DNFed at 68% after valiantly bashing away for two days on and off. Admittedly I’m not much of a mystery fan unless the characters are enthralling. These boys were dull. A 20-something perennial student living on a small trust fund who is still on his BA because after 5 years he can’t pick a major. He does nothing with his life, nothing for his community or friends or himself besides farting along in easy classes, drinking coffee or beer and feeding a local squirrel.
I can’t even with such a dull person living a pointless life.
A light hearted murder mystery with a paranormal twist, animals and a Peter Pan type MC. I liked Jake, Boo and Don. The story itself felt pretty much wtf to me, the cop is pretty much here’s a theory but stay out of it. A few kisses but other than that nothing much. Curious about where the squirrel thing is going.
Such a fun book. I really enjoyed the characters and story. It was exactly the type of book I was looking for. If you are a cat or animal lover you will really like this book. A bit of murder mystery, a bit of romance, a bit of paranormal, and great laughs and character development. Just what the doctor ordered to escape reality for a bit. I look forward to book #2 in the series whenever it's available.
This was funny, fast-paced read that had me giggling in parts. If you're looking for sexy times, this is not the book for you but I found it to be quite charming. If you're looking for a palate cleanser after a darker read, then this one fits the bill quite nicely. 3.5 stars
2.5 stars.
Jake thinks that he is a werewolf. He keeps dreaming of being on all fours and hearing and smelling things that he couldn't possibly as a human. His best friend tells him that he is not, and to stop reading paranormal romances. However, when Jake dreams a particularly vivid dream and knows where it takes place, they go check it out, and find a lot of details that Jake remembers are correct. Then Jake dreams about someone being killed and they discover the body. Jake gets a crush on one of the detectives, but they both take an instant disliking to him. Soon the one detective, the one that Jake has a crush on, starts showing up where Jake is, and a strange black cat starts visiting his apartment. Jake also starts investigating the murder because he's been told that he is a suspect.
I don't know. There was something off about the writing for me. I mean, it was cute, but something was lacking. It felt a little simplistic, or something. I don't know, I just know that I kept thinking that something wasn't working for me. Jake seemed a little young to me, and for all he read paranormal romance and thought he could be a werewolf, it never seemed to occur to him that someone else could maybe have paranormal elements to them. Which, if you think it could be true of yourself, why would you not think it could be true of anyone else? And I'm getting really tired of people who know absolutely nothing about investigation or even basic self defense putting themselves in potentially dangerous situations thinking that nothing will happen to them.
I liked this story. It was cute, but a bit predictable. I figured it out almost immediately. Although the villain caught me a bit off guard. It was so obvious, I thought I was wrong. Still I liked this story, and I will try the next one.
Sweet cozy mystery without a solution
For the most part, this was a pleasant book. Sweet, quirky characters and no sex. There was very little tension and even the point of was almost completely without drama. Basically a charming bit of fluff, a nice way to waste a couple of hours.
There was however, a huge problem. The writer forgot to properly explain the murders! We know who the murderer is and what they used as a weapon but everything else is left for the reader to guess. Sure, there are some obvious conclusions based on Jake’s discoveries, but they only really explain the first murder. The second murder was never explained and the attempted third murder didn’t make any sense at all. Why was the killer lurking with the weapon handy? I understand that they wanted to kill their 3rd target before they could tell someone that a certain tool was missing, but why do it so obviously and so ineptly? It was just bizarre.
I think I may be a werewolf
...because this book had me howling (with laughter.) It begins with a fun, quirky tone that carries throughout the book. I love Jake. And Don. And Boo. And Bill & Gary. I seriously want more Bill & Gary. I'd love a whole book devoted to their backstory & their current search for a nice young thing to play with. The story of Jake & Boo is fun, too. Jake's lack of a filter between brain & mouth resulting in his asking Petreski if he was a werewolf was hilarious. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series. Because one can never read too many paranormal romances. ;)
Not the full package
Jake is a good main character, sweet and eccentric. His friendship with Don is well written, and that's what pulled me in. The rest of the book was ok, the story was kind of rushed after the initial intro. And Don and Jake's involvement is a little far fetched. There isn't much to the romance piece, and no chemistry to speak of. The end reveal is rushed but also obvious. There were good parts to the book, they just weren't put together in the most captivating way.
This was more a 2.75 than a solid 3 for me. I liked it, more than enough to continue on in the series (I've already purchased "Not a mermaid"), but nothing surprised me. Sometimes the characters' "voices" weren't differentiated enough for me. Voice can be tricky but word choice also has a lot to do with it.
But this was clever and intriguing enough for me to read on!
This is a funny and cute piece of cotton candy fluff. It works because it doesn't take itself too seriously. I'm completely not buying the fact Jake is 26 because this book reads like Jake and Don are highschoolers poking their noses into and solving the murder case. Still all the cats are cute and Jake's weird ideas are funny. This was a nice quick read that I enjoyed alot.
Three stars ONLY for the cats and Don. The mystery was telegraphed so hard that I don’t understand why so much of the book was dedicated to it. And why do we spend more time with a squirrel (who does not add anything) and a spiritual adviser (who does not add anything) than we do our potential live interest? I’m not sure if I’ll read the rest of the series.
Some may say that book 1-4 is missing hot steamy sex, but you know this book doesen't need it. I love this book, author was new for me and I decided to read it back when it came our in 2015. Since then i got all those series and newer was disappointed. This lovely and warm book, full of humor and character that you are going to love. I will be waiting book 5 !!
