Bitterroot #2

Bitterroot: Part 2

Rate this book
One month ago, Charlotte Vuk—Charlie—was living in a small town in Oregon with her mother, completely unaware she was next in line for alpha to a werewolf pack so steeped in tradition and rules that they banished her mother 17 years ago for being “the other woman.” Now, Charlie is here in Paradise to meet a family she never knew she had. And to compete for a title she never wanted in the first place.

Regan Vuk needs to be alpha—and fast. Her father has completely lost his mind; promising his daughter's hand in marriage to their worst enemy in exchange for a peace the vampires ruined when they killed Regan’s mom is crazy. Regan needs to unseat him and bring order back to her people. Even if it means hurting Charlie in the process.

Charlie doesn’t understand why everyone hates the vampires so much. So far, Owen’s done nothing but help her. He’s the only friend she has, the only one who has taken the time to get to know her. But Owen isn’t the only one who sees her, and soon both girls realize there’s someone else out there against the idea of another Vuk becoming alpha. It might even be the same person who killed Regan’s mom. When they discover a vampire’s scent on their tail, Regan isn’t surprised they're in danger.

For Charlie, it’s beginning to feel as if her world is crumbling in around her. For Regan, it's just another day in Paradise.

Four stars: The action notches up, the romance burns and the stage is set.

Charlotte Vuk is still trying to adjust to her life as a Pack member. She grew up on the run with her mother amongst the humans, never knowing she had a half sister and father. Now she is acclimating into the pack. Her new life is difficult because she must battle her sister Reagan to be Alpha. The winner will have to marry Owen, a vampire prince and the wolves sworn enemy. No one knows that Charlotte has been secretly meeting Owen.
*Reagan is struggling with trying to develop a friendship with her sister and knowing she must fight her. Reagan wants nothing more than to protect her sister, even if that means winning the competition and marrying the vampire. Which sister will prevail?
What I Liked:
*This second installment notches up the action and ignites two romances. It also eludes to danger and treachery in the Pack. It builds and builds, leading up to the big showdown between the sisters. I am absolutely itching to find out who wins the competition.
*For you romance lovers, this book features two romances. One is a forbidden romance between two sworn enemies, one of secrecy and stolen kisses. The other is one of my favorite kinds, two childhood friends opening up and discovering they have feelings. Both romances are on treacherous ground, and they could come crashing down at any moment. I need to know how they will play out.
*This second book is a building block installment. It takes its time to develop characters and relationships as well as the romances. It also eludes to a traitor amongst the wolves. Each girl is training and preparing for the competition. The book leads up to the big showdown, and then ends... sigh... I need the finale and the answers.
And The Not So Much:
*A couple of niggles. I wasn't happy with the way Charlie treated her mother when she finally spoke with her. She never gave her a chance to explain. I hope they work it out.
*I am still needing way more information on the vampires. Right now, the details are still scant.
*I hate waiting for the installments. I need the whole story now. If you are impatient like me and want the whole thing, fear not, the third book will be out in November, and I am hoping of an epic conclusion.

Bitterroot Part 2 is a building block installment. This one takes its time getting to know characters, developing romances, exposing danger and setting the stage for the big battle between the sisters. I cannot wait for the finale.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own, and I was not compensated for this review.

I absolutely loved the first part of this trilogy. In fact, I couldn't wait to get my hands on the second part in the book. It was just as awesome as I hoped.
I'm loving Regan and Charlie! They are both great main characters that you can't help but emphasize with. I'm team Charlie! How about you? Do you have a favorite?
Then, there are the guys. Yup, hot guys are involved! One mysterious hot guy, and another loyal hot guy. I'm on the fence with them. They both have awesome characteristics! Gah!
Now it all comes down to part 3! I'm dying to see what is going to happen in the conclusion. All I can do, is beg the authors to finish it quickly and put me out of my misery.
Five Glittery Stars for this installment of Bitterroot!

If you like werewolves and vampires, this is a fantastic series. I bought the entire series and loved each book. This is the next installment in the series when Charlie finds out who Owen really is and what she is up against. But, things are not always as they seem as there may be another mystery in their midst...one that may cost her life.

Seventeen year old Charlotte (Charlie) has been raised in the human world while her half-sister, Regan, has been raised in the world of the werewolf pack. When she is kidnapped after her prom, Charlie enter's Regan's world with all of its excitement and danger. She finally gets to meet her father and a half-sister she didn't even know she had. Neither of the young women realize what they are facing until she arrives and the law is laid down by their father, the results of which are not only the alpha position but marriage to a vampire named Owen. But is what he is demanding ofthem too much? Then there's the matter of Regan's mother's murder. Was it vampires who killed her, or is there a conspiracy to blame them? And what would that gain? What will any of it mean for the two warring societies? To the young women who each have a stake in final results of the fight?

This was so much more than I thought it would be when I first started reading it. The author gives us a look at pack life and what it could mean for either of the young women, if she should win the competition, from both points of view. As I read each of them, I understood there was no way it could have been written any other way but from both POV's because it is important that we know what each is thinking in every situation, and it doesn't place one as more important than the other. It was exciting as they discovered not only some of the things about each other but the world around them and the other important characters in the story. It is well written and made it easy to get drawn into the story.

Bitter Beloved is part two of a three part novella series. I love that this book picked up right where the previous one left off. They even overlap a little to bring the reader into the story. This second installment takes the action up a notch because both girls are training and preparing for the competition. Two romances are ignited in this book. One is a forbidden romance between two sworn enemies, one of secrecy and stolen kisses. The other is between two childhood friends, who discover that they have feelings for each other. I can't wait to see how both play out. What I didn't like about this book is that in the first chapter of this book Regan looks at Charlie and mentions that Charlie has blonde hair. What?? In Bitter Rivalry, Regan says Charlie has brunette hair. I even went back and double checked myself to make sure I wasn't going crazy. In Bitter Rivalry, it mentions that the girls are supposed to look almost identical except for the length of their hair and their body. It frustrates me a lot when a series does something like this and little details are changed and not kept consistent throughout the series. I also found a few grammatical errors in this book, which makes me sad. I wished the vampires had been more touched on in this book. They're still an elusive part of the series. Overall, it was a good second installment of this series and I'm looking forward to reading the third and final part. I am dying to find out who will win the competition!

INITIAL THOUGHTS
As I finished reading Bitterroot Pt1 my first thoughts were you can't be ending it there! So to say I was really eager to read more is a bit of an understatement!

MY REVIEW
As I think I have said before I am lucky enough to be part of Heather's Street Team "Heather's Hotshots" so was given an e-arc of this one in exchange for my honest review. Thank you to both Heather Hildenbrand & S.M. Reine & Elephantine Publishers too. I did begin reading as soon as it was available. I think it's fairly safe to say that I am quite addicted to this series! Even though the cover is exactly the same as for Bitterroor Part One this one, but for the purpose of this review and keeping it in the same format as other reviews, I will talk about my opinion on the cover now. The cover is a rich evening blue colour, and features a moonlit background. In front of the moon are two females, both wearing white dresses, whose joined hands are holding a beautiful bouquet of deep red roses. The female on the left (as you look at the book) is blonde, and her dress has straps on it. The female on the right is dark haired and her white dress is strapless. The title of the book is in a cursive font, that catches by eye. After reading the book I'd say that the two females on the front cover are very good likenesses of the females described in the book, in fact the cover image could be an actual scene from the book, and fits really well within the plot of the book that fit at the end of Part One, and from the beginning of Part Two.
Part two almost picks up right where part one left off, having said that there is a little recap of the situation at the beginning of this book.
So a little about the two main characters, Charlie Vuk, the werewolf shifter who knows nothing about pack life or pack politics but will soon be getting a crash course! Charlie has lived in exile from the pack with her mother until her father turns up and kidnaps her, informing her she has to dual against the half sister she didn't know she had for the title of alpha of the pack she has newly met and never knew she belonged with.
Regan Vuk, the werewolf shifter who feels she has the right by birth to be the next female Alpha. Regan has the support of the majority of the pack, has grown up with the pack so knows all the traditions and political nuances of the pack too.
This part of the book reveals the identity of the mystery man who Charlie has befriended. In fact this very same person offers to coach Charlie, to teach her to listen to her wolf and to help her learn how to fight for her forthcoming dual. No one from her actual pack has helped her prepare for the dual other supplying her with a book to read about the packs history.
I enjoyed the section where William Vuk the girls father and temporary Alpha takes a class on hunting, something we learn both the girls deal with extremely differently to one another.
It seems that Regan is of the opinion that she will win the dual/trials that are set easily and is trying to train with friend, former possible Beta, Carter, to learn a way to take down Charlie without going too far and killing her. Regan is totally unaware that Charlie is training hard as she wants to prove herself to the pack as being worthy as an Alpha and has no intention of going easy of Regan.
Regan even attempts to bond over "girly" time with Charlie. Regan shows an interest in Charlie's favourite type of shop, . . .antiques. The half sister's relationship seems to be improving, but there is always the looming dual/trials ahead and somehow keeps a wedge in place between the girls. During the time the girls spend together Regan reveals quite a bit of pack history to Charlie explaining how their pack became settled in this area and why.
There is also an unknown threat of someone following both girls too!
I love the friendship/possible romances between Charlie and her mystery man and Regan and long time best friend Carter!
We also meet the vampire Prince in this book, learning that though he may be a Prince that not all is well within his family either. Both girls meet the other vampires at the party. You can literally feel the tension between the two rival clans.
I also want to add I really enjoyed the writing style of these authors and would be interested to learn how the co-writing process worked and who wrote which parts. I would also class the two parts I have read as more short stories than novella's. I am wondering if the individual parts will be put together to form a full length book, I think maybe that's why there is just the one cover. I suppose it depends on how many parts there will be to this series. This series has oodles of potential and could go on for quite a few more parts/books. (hint, hint, please)
So did I enjoy the book? I an totally enamoured with this series! Even though Heather Hildenbrand and S.M. Reine ended this novella at a moment that made me want to scream as I wanted to read much much more! They both sure know how to do a cliff hanger. Would I recommend the book? Oh yes, an absolute must read for YA shifter fans! Certainly put me in the mood for more shifters and there whole unique brand of politics, Alpha problems, and territorial issues. Would I want to read another novella/book in this series? Most certainly! as soon as it's available please. (pretty please) Would I want to read other titles by Heather Hildenbrand, or S.M. Reine? I have already read other titles by Heather Hildenbrand such as Imitation, which I also loved! I do have some more of her titles to read too. I have to admit I have had one or two of S.M. Reine titles for a while and sadly not gotten around to reading them, however after reading this series I will be reading some of those titles.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Being totally honest here my first reaction upon finishing this short book was "You can't seriously be ending it here!2 and "What a place to end it, I want more pleeeeeease now!" I truly love this series. I love the writing style throughout the books, and adore the characters and where the plot seems to be heading. I already have my thoughts of how I want the relationships to progress between the sisters and between the sisters and their possible, potential other halves.

***I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.***

This book picks up right where book 1 left off. Charlotte and Regan are still strained even though they want to get to know one another. There is so much hostility between the two of them and this book really shows this.

Regan... She thinks she has this competition in the bag against Charlotte. However, being too sure of yourself can be an issue or get to your head so I am curious to see how everything will work out!
Charlotte (AKA Charlie)... She keeps doubting herself and it seems like the only ones who believe in her are Owen and maybe her father. Owen is the vampire who the winner needs to Marry as a part of the treaty with the Vampire clan. However, the closer Charlotte gets to Owen, it makes her want to fight even more.

This was a good follow up to the first book! I cannot wait to read the final installment of this series! I really want to know what happens! Get your copy now to find out as well!

That face you make when you snub sister walks in 😒

Oh man! Sister Drama! There is no time for sister bonding because they have to train and prepared for the competition for the Alpha position. They both won’t admit it but they love each other. Regan is more about “responsibility and duty” and Charley more about “Desire and free”. Neither is wrong. Each are different and yet same. They both craved love and family. We get to see how they train and the chemistry building up for both girls with their significant love interest. Charley is falling hard for the Vampire prince Owen her mortal enemy to her entire clan and Regan can’t see what’s right in front of her: Carter, her best friend and ally. The more they fight the harder they fall. I can’t wait to read the conclusion. The anticipation for the actual event competition has me sweating! #teamCharley&Owen

In this book we continue the story of Regan and Charlie and their trial to see who the next alpha will be. The relationship between Charlie and Regan has not changed much. It still is strained. It is clear the pack does not respect or even like Charlie very much. There were some things happen in book 2 that surprised me. I can wait to see what is going to happen in 3. We also get to see more of the elusive vampire prince, Owen. He’s definitely Book Boyfriend material. I really love how you see each girl begins to change. I really love how strong Charlie is becoming. We see Regan start to question her life some. If you love a great shifter read this is the book for you. I highly recommend it.

I seriously love this series. These two sisters are so spunky and just want a chance to have a relationship. They have both grown up separate from others, set a part for completely differing reasons. The two guys who adore them are most certainly dreamy, each in his own way. I'm dying to find out who will win this competition and who will marry Owen. I'm on pins and needles.... I love the dual POV as it really makes this series shine and so very interesting. I love that this has been such a sweet slow burn romance and yet totally it's been dedicated to preparing for the upcoming competition. This is one must read 💝💝💝💝

Love love

5 stars because I have truly loved this series and this book included. Charlie is finally accepting the pack idea and found a reason to truly want to win the competition. Her winning means the alpha title as well as a marriage to Owen. She has befriended him in secret. He has been the only one to truly befriend her and he isnt even part of her pack. He has taken the time to educate and train her. The competition date has been set. Cant wait to read the next book to find out who wins.

Wow, this is a good series. I loved the first book so much, I read it in a few hours, & just had to see how it ended, so picked up the 3 book set. The sisters, Charlie & Regan, are likable in their separate ways. The Main male character, Owen, is also pretty awesome. There are some twists & turns to the plot, a few predictable places, but the whole thing flowed well. This held my interest enough to stay up until 2 in the morning to finish the whole set!

Entertaining and easy language.
I like the main persons and the story is well fleshed out, tho some become a little onedimentional.
Interesting twist on the relationship between werewolves and vampires.

Unsure why this story wasn't publish as just one or two books, instead of as a triology, since the books are rather short. I guess it makes sense economically since they give away the first one for free.

I am absolutely loving this series! This is book 2 in the bitterroot series - book one must be read first so you know what is going on. I absolutely love the character development as well as the growing relationships between the characters. I am looking forward to book 3 - can't wait to see what happens next!

Good

This is a really well written YA Novel. 2 sisters, have to fight for the position of alpha. Who will win. This book has romance in it however it doesn't take it any farther than kissing. I really enjoyed the character development, felt like I could connect with both sisters. If your looking for a short read a must pick up.

Great story about 2 half sisters different as day & night

Imagine being thrown in a different state and city. You meet a person that is definitely different and fall in love. But you find out to have to compete to have him. Wonderful story that you must read. 10 stars to the authors.

4 star, but shoud be a 5...

Again, just like the first book, I love the characters and the story line. I just feel they should be one book for it to be complete. Definitely worth the read and beyond excited for the conclusion!

Short Story

I would give this book 5 stars and even10 stars if I could. But really all of this series could have been one book instead of many short stories. It is super frustrating to me when authors do this.

*** Gifted in exchange for an Honest Review ***

And so we continue the Novella series where the Alpha's are Females and again its different to see that the women have a prominent place in Pack hierarchy.

Sisters Charlie and Regan are training for the contest to see who will lead the pack, Regan is busy trying to find away to win without killing Charlie But Charlie has other ideas, and has been secretly training with Owen. We find out more about Owen in this installment, and I did see this twist coming, but it did not spoil my enjoyment of the series.

the story moves at a steady pace, we get to see the sisters interact together, and see that the dynamics in the Vampire world are not all what they appear to be, and I enjoyed the scene in the antique shop, and we have a mystery stalker too, I wonder who it will turn out to be - hopefully all will be revealed in book 3.

Again I am rooting for Charlie, she is more enamored to my sympathies as I always like to cheer for the underdog, and to be honest Regan is a bit of an arrogant girl, I guess that's from her upbringing, but she does seem to be a bit dense when it comes to Carters feelings!

The Council have their own agenda with the fight I am sure, especially Regan's mums so called best friend... she would be Alpha if something were to happen to the girls.

Regan and Charlies dad is as closed off as ever, we really do not get much of a glimpse of his character, in fact he seems a bit flat as a character - I think this is a bit of a let down for me, I want to know why the females are the leaders, not the men? This I feel is a point that could have been explored more, but this is a Teen book so I guess its more about the angst, training and the tension of unrequited love. Hopefully we get to find out more in book 3.

I am still team Charlie but by the end of book 2 I am doubtful of whether she will have the resolve to get vicious and ruthless to win, after all she couldn't kill Bambi's mum ( thank goodness!)

I have a lot of questions left unanswered by the end of the book, I guess I will find out in Book 3 (which is up for pre-order now)

I look forward to seeing how the series ends.
