While Maeshi province revels in the festival spirit, clouds gather over the political scene. Two warlords are vying for control of this otherwise peaceful place, and you are guests of one of them. Sun Temple officials have offered complete support to the faction which successfully travels to Ito-jo Castle (said to hold relics of great importance to the Sun Temple), brings them back safely, and returns them to the Inn of the Globefish.
The plan is laid before you. You are to leave immediately under secrecy for the castle of the Ito clan, also known as the Seven Swords Clan. Find the relics, and return them to the renowned inn Doi no Fugu. Extreme caution is needed here, for your warlord's rival must not hear of this!
Is the castle really haunted? What lies in the caverns beneath it? Will Korimori's troops discover your plan and try to wrest the relics from you, should you even get that far? What will you find at the Inn of the Globefish? Come, honorable stranger- the Seven Swords await!
There was a lot of information on the geography, important people and history of the land. It went right through my brain and I didn't absorb much, but that's typical for that sort of thing with me.
The atmosphere of Part 1 and Part 2 was pretty good with some creepiness in it.
The quest is to find legendary relics in a ruined castle on an island and bring it back to the daimyo and the cool thing is that there are 7 Boss encounters in Part 1 which were actually interesting. Part 2 has a boss fight which should end in 3-4 rounds though. Part 3 is traveling with pursuers and Part 4 is a fight with ninjas.
One thing I didn't like is that there are too many traps considering the party is supposed to be rushing through because they are pressed for time. Another thing is the amount of secret doors is also overdone. There are also compass directions used in the caverns not only read to the players, but NPCs say things like "go north".
Also... the players do not survive. Part 4 with the ninja fight has been laid out thoroughly enough that unless the characters choose to lose honor over some minor suspicions and break major social etiquette, they will be surprise attacked by a large group of ninjas while unarmed and unarmored and drunk. It gives ideas for how to counter anything that the characters could do to stop it from happening, but some reason says "intelligent" players should be allowed a chance to live lol.
No, they die. I guess if you decide to roll it out and the surprise attacks do 1 damage per they might, but that would be silly.
I noticed the following SADs:
-4. Multiple "mouldering", "rusted", "stale", "stained", "filthy" etc. pieces of scenery/items -9. Difficult to read geographical and/or tactical maps.
I was impressed that it either didn't or I didn't notice anymore. The first 2 chapters were good enough that I can give this 3 stars and not 2.
