A fantastically funny series from Alan MacDonald and David Roberts, creator of Dirty Bertie. Angela Nicely is already well known to Bertie’s fans after he struggled to escape her clutches in Kiss! she might look like she's made of sugar and spice and all things nice, but Angela's not quite as sweet as she'd have you believe!
Perfect for young readers who are fans of Dirty Bertie. Angela knows best! Whether she's having a bake off against Tiffany Charmers, going to a pony party or joining the local neighbourhood watch, she always has an answer for everything...
With fantastic artwork by award-winning illustrator, David Roberts (Tyrannosaurus Drip, The Wind in the Willows, The Troll, Eddie Dickens Trilogy), these deliciously funny stories are perfect for confident readers to enjoy by themselves, or for sharing with your child.
Angela Nicely is sure to delight young readers, with her larger-than-life personality and her desire to be the best!
So when I spotted this one I just had to read it. Oh no, not because of the title, no, because I recognised the art, and knew it was David Roberts, who is truly becoming one of my favourite illustrators.
While the book is title Cupcake Wars, the book wasn't all about the cupcakes. That was just one of the short stories that are found in this book. Each short story is about 3/4 chapters and is filled to the brim with lovely illustrations.
Angela was a really fun character, determined, strong, but also a bit too much at times. When she gets something in her little head she won't stop. Which was a problem with the story about her and the neighbour. She just doesn't seem to get the word stop, she just ploughs on. No matter the consequences. Which is a bit of a shame, but I didn't feel it is a big problem, I am sure she will learn to behave sooner or later.
Tiffany was just a horrendous little girl. Too bad that the teachers and adults always believe her, even though it is clear she is just stealing and being mean.
I really enjoyed this little book, and I will definitely check out if I can find more books in this series.
I received this copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review I am a great fan of the Dirty Bertie books, but hadn’t, until now, read any of the Angela Nicely series. Time to put that right. Dirty Bertie sees Angela as a pain to be avoided at all costs, but in these stories she comes across as much more of a kindred spirit. Angela’s adventures as a junior (unofficial) member of the Neighbourhood Watch create the type of mayhem of which Bertie would be proud. And in the cupcake wars, Angela’s inspired final version of her cupcakes get the approval of all the boys. The picture of Dirty Bertie’s face with his cupcake is just wonderful. If they could get over the (at this age probably insurmountable) boy-girl problems, the havoc they could create together would be painfully hilarious. The other main character in these stories is Angela’s arch nemesis, the very unlikable and nasty Tiffany, who – aided and abetted by her mother (who, as an adult, should know better) – bullies Angela. In the “Pony Party”, this bullying could have had disastrous consequences, but Angela’s luck pulls her through. The stories go to show that bullying and spite do not pay – always a good message for young readers. I loved reading these stories and admiring the wonderful (as always) pictures, and am now also a great Angela Nicely fan. Bring on the sequels!
My favourite Angela story so far! Very funny The very title had me wondering what was going to happen because Angela is involved in cupcakes. My first thoughts were cupcakes being thrown around like snowballs. Does that happen? I'm not saying! Angela is naturally competitive so taking on Tiffany over cupcakes brings about a lot of laughs and trouble.
I felt sorry for Angela when she showed up to a party wearing different clothes to everyone else, because girls can be very cruel about fitting in and Angela struggles to deal with those feelings. I had a similar issue when I was younger, and wish my future self could have told me there's nothing wrong with being girly and having my own style. Thankfully I have more self-confidence now. It's no surprise Angela gets carried away in imagining what her new neighbours are up to, it's not what she expected at all! A fun read full of mischief and mayhem.
This is a fun book that contains three stories. The images are great and the book is really easy to read. This book features Angela Nicely who is one of the characters in the Dirty Bertie series. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
